8 A MESSAGE FROM THE OWNER November 2023 The season of gratitude has dawned, and I wish to extend my heartfelt thanks to our dedicated Club Members, Committee Chairs, Board, and staff who contribute extensively to our Club and its community. Your commitment is truly appreciated. Despite the holiday rush that engulfs us all, your continued participation in our past and upcoming events is a source of immense gratitude. In the past month, a remarkable journey unfolded for sixteen of our Lighthouse Point Yacht Club Members. It's hard to capture in words just how extraordinary this adventure was. Our voyage began in South Africa, where we found our initial haven at the One & Only resort. The experience was nothing short of awe-inspiring. We embarked on mountain treks, enjoyed the beach with African penguins, took a cultural boat trip to Robin Island prison to learn about Nelson Mandela and the country's history, and even found ourselves unexpectedly enjoying a sidecar ride along the Chapman’s Peak Highway after hiking at Africas most southern point. Our journey continued to Stellenbosch, where we were treated to exquisite wine and dining, then headed down the famous "Garden Route." A private flight took us to Botswana, where we nestled in the heart of the Okavango Delta, coming face to face with magnificent creatures like leopards and elephants. Plus, a memorable helicopter flight to spot wildlife from above. Next on the itinerary was the stunning Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, where we found ourselves laughing heartily during adrenaline-packed river rafting and cruising the Zambezi River, basking in the beauty of a mesmerizing sunset. I wholeheartedly recommend that you join us on future bucket-list travels, as the bond formed with your fellow LHPYC friends on these once-in-a-lifetime adventures is truly irreplaceable. Our Cruise Group 2023 calendar is nearing its conclusion, but two significant events remain in the year. First, on December 8th, we have our Annual Small Boat Parade, graciously sponsored by Anthony & Perla Mazzo's East Marine Tenders. This year, we're uniting our Small Boat Parade with a Staniel Cay Fundraiser for the Saint Luke's Clinic. I extend an invitation to all our Members, Cruise Group, and your guests to take part in both aspects of this event. We will have a guest speaker, David Hocher, owner of Staniel Cay Yacht Club, restaurant, bar, accommodations on the island, Makers Air, Staniel Cay Air, and Watermakers. David and LHPYC are leading the charge to raise funds and bring this clinic back up to top operating condition. The Saint Luke's Clinic at Staniel Cay holds a special place in our hearts, as it plays a vital role in ensuring our well-being during our two annual Cruise Group Travel Calendar excursions. Plus, many of our community boaters find themselves in the Exumas year-round. Accidents happen, and medical care is a critical facet of our collective comfort. Without our help to build out the clinic, we face the possibility of needing to go to Nassau for treatment while on boating vacations. Our collective help will put LHPYC's name forever in Staniel Cay. Families who donate even more generously will get their names recognized, too. We'll be contributing a significant portion of the evening dinner fee and hosting a silent auction featuring incredible items, such as a flight and accommodation in Staniel Cay and even a free year of Membership for two guest families you may bring. Any additional monetary donations can be made via our GoFundMe campaign, which will be shared via email blast and at the event. In gratitude for our support, the Saint Luke's Clinic will honor the Lighthouse Point Yacht Club with a recognition plaque, commemorating our contributions and securing our legacy in the region for future generations. (Continued on Page 9)
9 A MESSAGE FROM THE OWNER (Continued from Page 8) Terry Paterson Owner & Interim General Manager Why is this close to our hearts is because many of us have 1st hand experiences where, without this clinic, our vacations would have been cut horribly short. Plus, this will forge a strong alliance between LHPYC and Staniel Cay Yacht Club. Following our diligent efforts to raise funds for the clinic, the Cruise Group will host the 2nd Annual New Year’s Eve Lake Boca Raft Up, generously sponsored by Trae West and Nicole Zepatis’s Big Dog Tackle. The theme for this year is your favorite TV show character from the 60s to the 90s. I extend my thanks to Tom and Mary Heller for their contributions in planning this event. It's a splendid way to welcome the New Year with friends on the water, indulging in Stone Crab Claws and Champagne thoughtfully provided by our Cruise Group Committee and Sponsors. Last month, our members returned from Ocean Reef. Our weekend sponsor, Rick Obey Yacht Sales, has set a new bar for a fantastic weekend with the LHPYC Cruise Group. From kid’s activities in the mornings, professional photographers, beautiful décor, and just extraordinary entertainment such as a live hula and fire show. It felt just like we were in French Polynesia. We all left in shock and awe at how phenomenal the weekend was. Thank you, Rick Obey Yacht Sales, for your contribution to this year’s club memories being made while out on travel. I want to express my gratitude to all our 2023 sponsors for their unwavering dedication to our Club and Cruise Group. Your efforts have injected a new level of fun and enthusiasm into each event you've sponsored. As a Club, we eagerly anticipate the future and the remarkable experiences that lie ahead. In club-related news, I'd like to acknowledge the feedback we've received regarding the increase in membership dues, effective this month. I understand the frustrations this change may have caused, and I had hoped to avoid implementing this by-law prior to or during construction. However, the economic landscape has evolved significantly since 2017 and 2019, with soaring inflation, mortgage rates, insurance costs, and various other factors. To align with the prevailing financial environment, we were compelled to increase monthly dues by 8%, resulting in an increase of $31.11 for our Flagship Members. This decision was not taken lightly, and we genuinely appreciate the support from those who have stood by us during this period. We continue to work diligently to navigate the permitting process for this development phase. We are immensely grateful to the City of Lighthouse Point for their diligence in processing our permits, including the main clubhouse, which is still under review. We anticipate receiving comments by the time of this publication. We are currently awaiting the finalization of residential permits for the sixteen townhomes, which are being reviewed by the Pompano Fire Department. We are in the final stages, with the last few minor comments expected to be resolved promptly. We acknowledge that this has been a protracted process, but rest assured that daily progress is being made, and we are committed to bringing this project to its successful conclusion. I wish everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving with their families, and I look forward to seeing you at the club and having fun!

22 Julia Robinson Membership & Communications Director This month, I celebrate five years of service to Lighthouse Point Yacht Club. I couldn’t be more grateful for my experiences and excited for what will come. Thank you all for being fabulous! There is no better season to thank you and be grateful for all we have. I am thankful to have returned from a once-in-a-lifetime journey to South Africa, Botswana, and Zimbabwe. It was filled with wanderlust, laughter, extraordinary nature, and, most importantly, the camaraderie of Lighthouse Point Yacht Club. It was so much fun to be the paparazzi for our members who attended and enjoyed the experience with each of you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! We will have a nice spread of photos in our December Newsletter showcasing the majestic beauty of the trip. However, photos and videos are available on our social media channels! Your Cruise Group and Travel Committees are already preparing for another crazy, fun year of travel in 2024. We are bringing many new trips to the schedule this year! Always continually check our Travel Website for all the latest (www.lhpyctravelcommittee.com)! We are also working on completing our Cruise Group Roster for 2024. The last chance to submit your profile to be featured in the 2024 Cruise Group Roster Booklet will be November 14th, 2023. If you have any intention of joining the 2024 schedule, now is the time to have your application submitted to [email protected]. Let’s talk snow, apres ski, and fresh powdered mountains! LHPYC Annual Ski Week is coming up, and you won’t want to miss it. February 12th to February 16th is your chance to enjoy the beautiful mountains of Big Sky, Montana, with your favorite LHPYC Members. We are finalizing the accommodations for this trip with the Montage as this MEMBERSHIP newsletter publishes. Updates and further details will be coming out via email blast and our travel website. Don’t miss your chance to join us! Membership is continually growing, and I am excited to introduce new members to our community. It’s beautiful to see all of you finding connection, feeling belonging, and making friends. On December 8th, we are hosting a Fundraiser for the Staniel Cay St. Luke’s Medical Facility and will be including two one-year memberships to the club in the auction line, along with other goodies, of course. I highly recommend bringing interested prospective member guests to the events to only aid in the charity efforts but also check out LHPYC up close and personal. If any of your friends or family are interested in joining the Club, please share my contact. As we welcome new faces to our club, your LHPYC Board and I are doing a significant screening process before the final approval of an application. Once a membership application has been returned, prospective members are scheduled for a Board Interview within two months of their application. The Board is given an overview of the future family and meets the prospects face-to-face. 23 FITNESS & YOUTH Fitness Jeremy Martens Fitness & Youth Director We officially have 61 days until 2024. Are you ready? This is what I call the final push. We are in the 25th mile of a marathon, and it’s time to go hard to the finish line! That said, I want to encourage you to get a jump start on your fitness before all your holiday eating and drinking commences. Every year, I hear the same thing from members and friends….”I’ll get in the gym after the holidays, calm down.” Do you know what that sounds like to me? EXCUSES! It’s time you prioritize your health and wellness. I know it takes sacrifices, but if you want to make changes in your life, it’s going to be uncomfortable for a while. But I promise you it will be worth it! I can help you start those changes and feel better about yourself, so please don’t hesitate to stop and see me. It is with great joy and sadness that I wish one of our longest-tenured instructors a farewell. Glenna Weber will be relocating to New Jersey to build a new life and business with her family this month, and I wanted to publicly thank her for all she has done for the Club and I over the last five years. For those of you who know Glenna, you know how hard it is for her to say goodbye. We have all become a fitness family, and she has been the glue that has held it together. I never like to say goodbye, but more appropriately, “See you again soon!”. Glenna, we love you, and your LHPYC family will always welcome you back! Best of luck on your new adventure! 29 of LHPYC Daniel J. O’Keefe • Fine Art 516-383-4000 • danieljokeefe.com The Art Gallery of Lighthouse Point Yacht Club is featuring Joan Mitchell for the 2023 September issue of The Point magazine. Joan Mitchell was an American abstract expressionist painter born on February 12, 1925, in Chicago, Illinois. She was raised in an affluent family and showed an early affinity for art, receiving formal training at the Art Institute of Chicago and later at Smith College in Massachusetts. After completing her studies, Mitchell moved to New York City in the early 1950s, where she became an integral part of the vibrant art scene of the time. As an artist, Mitchell was known for her dynamic and emotionally charged abstract paintings characterized by bold brushstrokes, vibrant colors, and a sense of movement. She drew inspiration from nature, particularly from landscapes, and her works often evoke a sense of atmosphere and place. Mitchell's paintings can be seen as a marriage of her internal emotional experiences and her external observations of the world around her. Throughout her career, Mitchell's work received recognition and acclaim. She exhibited extensively in the United States and internationally, with major solo exhibitions at prestigious venues such as the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York and the Museum of Modern Art in Paris. Mitchell's contributions to the art world were significant, and she became one of the few women to gain recognition in the male-dominated abstract expressionist movement. Mitchell lived and worked in various locations throughout her life, including New York City, France, and the American Midwest. She developed a deep connection to France, spending a considerable amount of time in Paris and eventually settling in the small village of Vétheuil. Mitchell passed away on October 30, 1992, leaving behind a powerful artistic legacy that continues to inspire and captivate audiences to this day. Please get in touch with Daniel J. O’Keefe at 516-383-4000 or email me at [email protected] for questions about the artists.
