13 of LHPYC Daniel J. O’Keefe • Fine Art 516-383-4000 • danieljokeefe.com The Art Gallery Of Lighthouse Point Yacht Club is featuring Julian Baumgartner, artist, conservator and owner of Baumgartner Fine Art Restoration. All conservators of fine art eventually work under an established fine art restoration artist or restoration institution. Julian was no exception. Julian’s father, Rene Agass Baumgartner, was a Swiss-born man who started working with a conservator while he was in art school in the early 1970s, mostly as a means of survival. Rene started by cleaning and preparing brushes and materials. As Rene learned more, he began a kind of formal apprenticeship in conservation. Years later, Rene moved to the United States and set up shop in Chicago while he made art on the side. He slowly built his clientele through word of mouth, knowing the quality of his work and reputation should speak for itself. Julian spent sick days, snow days, and a lot of time in his father’s studio while growing up in Chicago. Before Julian’s formal art education, he was learning a lot just by being around the materials and watching his dad work. After Julian returned from college, he started his apprenticeship under his father Rene, and they worked together until Rene passed away. Julian then opened his own shop as conservator and owner of Baumgartner Fine Art Restoration. Julian spends his days by running the business and doing conservation work. As a conservator, he works primarily on paintings, works on canvas, and painted objects. Conservation can range from stabilizing pieces to putting them entirely back together, and that can include paintings that are five weeks old to more than 500 years old, from masters and heirlooms to unknown artists, from zero to seven-figure paintings, and from those owned by a family to those hanging in global institutions. While other conservation studios have grown exponentially, Baumgartner Fine Art Restoration has decidedly stayed small. Clients can be sure that their artworks will only ever be touched by one set of hands. In keeping with his father's example, Julian feels that by fostering a personal relationship with every client and artwork, the best results can be achieved. While Baumgartner Fine Art Restoration has worked with major corporations and governmental organizations, we are especially proud of our ongoing relationships with small museums, universities, art galleries, art dealers, collectors and of course private clients. Please feel free to contact Daniel J. O’Keefe at 516-383-4000 or email me at [email protected] until the new club’s art gallery website is ready.
Growing up on a lake in Northwest Iowa I have been a “Lake Rat” my entire life. Yes, we do have lakes and boating in The Tall Corn State. Upon graduating from The University of Iowa (Go Hawkeyes!!!) I owned and operated a wholesale chemical and paper supply company. After 30 years in this business, the opportunity arose to change my life’s course and enjoy more time on the water and chasing classic and collector cars. Since Iowa’s lakes turn to ice cubes during the winter months, it was only natural for a snowbird to head to open water.Having vacationed in South Florida over the years I knew this is where I wanted to land. Since a kid my hobbies have always included racing Scow Class sailboats and spending time as a power boater. This led me to being active in the Lake Okoboji Yacht Club (“OYC”) where I served as Commodore in 2022. I’m presently passing my love of sailing on to the next generation as the Chairman of the Yacht Club Sailing School Board. This organization provides learning to sail, racing, and adult sailing classes to over 650 participants during the soft water months. When I’m not around water I have also found joy serving as President of my Country Club, area Historical Society, and serving on the boards of The Mamie Dowd Eisenhower Birthplace and the local Habitat for Humanity Chapter. Currently I’m serving on the national board of The Cadillac and Lasalle Club. When deciding to winter in Florida, I wanted to find a yacht club with a strong feeling of community that provided a broad range of amenities and a full social calendar. As luck would have it, the OYC has reciprocity with many Clubs in this area, including the Lighthouse Point Yacht Club, allowing me to explore how various clubs aligned with the aforementioned characteristics. Fortunately, there wasn’t much exploring to do as each time I entered the door of LHPYC, first as a guest and then as a new member, I’ve always been given a warm and hospitable welcome by the members and staff. I am amazed by the activities and events offered through the LHPYC and I’m looking forward to the new friendships and experiences that await! New Member Spotlight Jim Caffrey 14 Ginny Mermaid
Member Spotlight Alex & Nancy Jones Alex and Nancy Jones both grew up in the city of Lighthouse Point. In 1987, when Nancy Jones was 18 years old, Alex was the valet parker at the LHYRC. He decided to put a note on her car asking is she would please call him and that he thought she was very pretty. Five years later they had their wedding at the club and have been married ever since. A true LHPYC love story! The Jones’ have three children Alexandra, Peter and Emily and a future daughter -in -law, Victoria. All three of their children are Florida Gators and graduates of the University of Florida. GO GATORS! All of them reside in Lighthouse Point. They have all grown up at the club and still spend time at the club’s gym, pool, and tennis courts. Alex takes advantage of the pool everyday and you’ll probably see him swimming laps, make sure to say hi! As a family they spend a lot of time on the water whether its diving for lobster, fishing, or just enjoying a beautiful day. The family’s favorite on the water hangout is the Bahamas! They also enjoy land activities such as golfing, hiking, and skiing. They have dreams of having a second home one day in Park City, Utah. Over the last fifteen years, the family has been involved with 4Kids of South Florida. A wonderful non-profit organization that focuses on foster care services, mentoring, and serving underprivileged kids that have aged out of the “system”. If you are interested in becoming more involved with the charity, Nancy asks you to reach out to her! You can get her number by contacting Julia ([email protected]) or by the Member Roster on LHPYC.com in the member portal. 15
16 Ginny Mermaid Julia Robinson Membership & Communications Director Cupid’s arrow has landed on the calendar and the month of love has arrived. This month I am in love with all things LHPYC, especially our members who make the club the place to be. In February, let’s spread the love with potential new members.Send your friends, family, and neighbors my way to learn more and join the club before our year takes off. We are currently working on our LHPYC Mobile App. The App is an exciting innovation for the Club as it will allow you easy access to our calendar, dining, class and clinic schedules, and much more. We will be hosting seminars for all the “how-to’s” once the app is officially launched! Look out for updates on our e-blast and social media channels. The best a part about a new year is all the fun upcoming travel! I personally am looking forward to our Park City Ski Trip happening next month. If you haven’t booked your room yet, our core dates are March 20th through 25th with the option to extend your stay by 3 days either before the 20th or after the 25th. If you need help booking, contact me so I may assist you. You can access our group link and view more information by visit lhpyctravelcommittee.com or through your member portal at LHPYC.com We have begun planning group dinners (some including sleigh rides) and group activities for the participants, so don’t miss out on a fun week hitting the slopes. Joe Gratton Paterson Project Manger WELCOME NEW MEMBERS Jay & Lis Molbogot MEMBERSHIP DEVELOPMENT UPDATE Greetings LHPYC Members, I am Joe Gratton, the LHPYC Paterson Project Manager. I am responsible for keeping our construction project moving forward and wanted to give you a few updates regarding our development! We are currently completing our auxiliary permits to prepare the clubhouse for demolition. Prior to bringing the clubhouse down, we will be completing our interior prep, moving our office ladies to their new home, and disconnecting utilities to the main building. We have completed transiting electrical services for the Marina and Pro-Shop to their new power source. If you have not noticed, we did have our temporary office trailer put into place and it is currently being connected to utilities as well as renovating the inside. (PS. You will most likely catch a glimpse of yours truly tumbling down the mountain!) Another very exciting trip we have planned is our African Safari happening October 24th through November 6th! This truly is a once-in-a-lifetime vacation! It includes unique excursions such as a personal tour of Robben Island with Christo Brand (personal guard and friend to Nelson Mandela), a champagne helicopter ride over the delta, exclusive whale watching with cocktails, and hitting the vineyards with a master sommelier! Accommodations are all five star and six of the nights are all inclusive private camps with game drives and wildlife encounters. If you are animal lover, an adventurer, or have been waiting to cross the pond to Africa, this is your opportunity. The trip is made easy with our contracted travel agents who are doing all the bookings, making special requests happen, and are ready to book your flights if you wish. If you are interested in more information, contact me asap as limited spots are available (email [email protected]). Many of you are requesting a timeline for construction as well as the date for demolition. We will be releasing all this requested information once the building is prepared for demolition. Your membership department will be sending out continual updates regarding demolition throughout the month and into March. If you have any questions feel welcome to contact Julia and she will be more than happy to assist.
TENNIS Tennis and pickleball have both been rocking in January! Our Tuesday evening Cardio classes and Friday night Tiki Tennis have regularly used two courts. Feeding Frenzy on Saturday mornings has shown to be very well attended. It's our take on the popular Live Ball groups that are all the rage across the country. Our Men's Nite tennis is going strong and adding players each month to the roster. Again, we have our Wednesday morning Drill & Play for the men. Men's Drill & Play is a great way to work on your shots and use them during point play. Our ladies have been busy playing in the East Coast League, Coastal Clay Courters, and the Broward Women's Tennis League this season. All our teams are playing awesome, with our ladies Broward 4.0 sitting in first place!!! Keep up the great work. Each month we are adding junior players to our clinics as well. We are looking to start a LHPYC junior team, so if your child wants to add competition to their schedule, let us know. Jim can fill you in on the details. We are still taking names for a day trip to the Miami Open Tennis Tournament. Don't hesitate to contact our Membership/Marketing Director, Julia Robinson, or Jim Scott for details. For those of you who are new to LHPYC, take advantage of your complimentary 30-minute lesson. This is a great way to meet our professional staff and have them point you in the right direction for getting involved. Please e-mail our Director of Tennis, Jim Scott, to reserve your spot at [email protected]. Jim Scott, Tennis Director 17
SWIM The Lighthouse Point Yacht Club Aquatics Programs will be starting this month. Swimmers on the swim team will have the opportunity to join the Polar Bear Club by attending practices during the Winter/Spring Session. Swimmers that make the club will be announced in a future announcement from the pool. Tryouts and evaluations are now being scheduled and have started. Swim lessons are also available and start at age five. Please email Keith@LHPYC.com or text 513-713-7296 to set up your appointments. FITNESS & YOUTH Fitness One month down and eleven to go! I am hoping that everyone had a great first month to the new year. I read something interesting recently about goal setting and I felt it was appropriate for me to share this month. Most people start the new year with big lofty goals of getting in shape or losing lots of weight. The reason most people don’t achieve their goals is that they are not realistic and therefore they end up giving up without much progress. Instead of making a goal of getting in “shape” or losing 50lbs why don’t you set something smaller and more manageable like; I’m going to go to the gym at least 10 times this month or I’m going to lose 5lbs this month. By making smaller goals over shorter amounts of time it may help you reach the BIG goal that you are ideally striving for! If you have any question or would like some help with your fitness training, please come visit me in the gym or try out one of our amazing classes going on daily at the tennis pro shop. Youth The Club is hosting a Valentine dinner on Saturday February 11th, and we would be more than happy to provide some fun for the kids at our Activities Center with Ms. Katie, Ms. Jane, and Ms. Navah that evening. Please don’t forget that our Little Skippers program is open from Wednesday nights to Saturday Nights. We always ask that you make reservations for the kids so we can prepare for each night! Stay tuned for more fun events to come your way! Jeremy Martens Fitness & Youth Director Keith Kennedy Head Swim Coach Thanks to all the attended the Swim Team Meet The Coach Night it was great to meet some of you and I can’t wait to meet the rest of our members who were unable to attend! Thank you! 18 Ginny Mermaid
FROM THE MARINA We are welcoming February at the LHPYC marina! We hope you’re enjoying the start of the year with us. So far so good on sticking to our New Year’s resolutions, if you have, keep up the good work! If you have not, well at least you tried, and effort is worth celebrating. As we continue with the Marina improvement process, safety is our top priority. To ensure a smooth and safe experience for all members, we ask that you read all updates and parking instructions carefully. If you plan on leaving your car at the marina for an extended period, please make sure your car has a decal and your spot will not interfere with any construction happening around the club. The south side of the parking lot near the tennis courts is usually the best option for the overnight parking. Carpooling or Uber drop off to the club will also be helpful when possible if you are planning on traveling. If you’ll be away for more than one night, it may be a good idea to leave your keys with us if your car is staying in the parking lot. Now for the reason we live here: the temperatures this time of year can range from the mid-60s to the mid-80s, which is oh so wonderful. It is important to check the forecast before heading out on the water and be prepared for changing conditions. However, this is a great time of year for fishing Toni Merlino Marina Director and could be a great time to try your luck. Other fun ideas for an excuse to go boating is to just hang in Boca Lake to get some sunshine or pull your boat up to the Lighthouse for a picnic on the water. They both make a fun day trip. Happy safe sailing, Happy Valentine’s Day! XO Have a fabulous day! IN OUR COMMUNITY PAST: 4 KIDS The Entertainment Committee hosted a successful fundraiser for 4Kids in December: "Thank you for choosing 4KIDS as the beneficiary of your 2022 Holiday Charity Event which raised $27,000. CRUISE GROUP YA of the CHT “BELLISIMA” I would like to introduce, Elliott & Daniela Paul and their stunning yacht Bellisima! - Cruise Group Chair, Michael Holmes Member Name: Elliott & Daniela Paul Name of Boat: “Bellisima” Beautiful “Bellisima” joined the Paul family in October of 2022. She is a truly beautiful vessel, both inside and out. Bellisima is a 2023 72 Ft. Azimut Fly Bridge that the owners, Elliott and Daniela ordered over 1 year ago. Elliott and Daniela have been boaters for quite some time. Elliott grew up boating in Ft. Lauderdale with his family. His father Barry loves yachts. His family would spend many weekends boating while Elliott was growing up. This passion transferred down to Elliott. Shortly after marrying Daniela in 2001, Elliott purchased his first boat while living in Atlanta, Ga. He and Daniela would fly down to Ft. Lauderdale every month to enjoy the beautiful South Florida waters. In 2008, Elliott and Daniela moved to Parkland, Florida and in 2018 joined LHPYC. Since then, Elliott, Daniela, Bella and Jacob continue to enjoy both the club and boating world. Elliott and his family searched years for the perfect boat. Although they enjoyed all their past boats, something wasn’t quite complete. Bellisima offers just enough space to both enjoy the boating world and have a 2nd home on the east side of town. While Isabella relaxes and watches a movie, Jacob fishes out back with dad. Bellisima runs amazing on the water and is large enough to entertain comfortably both inside and out. Whether on the bridge enjoying the rays or inside having a formal dinner, Bellisima offers just enough space to feel like a home. She is truly the perfect vessel. 20
21 chef’s CORNER Valentine’s Day is the most notable day in February and while you’re shopping for your spouse or partner your LHPYC Culinary Team is cooking with love at Shipwrecked. Join us on Saturday, February 11th for our Valentine’s Day special. We are featuring a table side choice menu with choices between a flaky baked brie, lobster ravioli, or a perfectly grilled ribeye. Check out all the details on page six. I hope you are all enjoying the new shipwrecked menu. Some of the most popular items so far have been our wild mushroom flatbread, ahi tuna nachos, and mahi tostada. If you haven’t tried definitely put it on your to do list!
