BACHELOR OF MUSIC CURRICULUM
The undergraduate curriculum at Eastman is designed to develop not only
students’ performance abilities, but also a strong intellectual perspective.
Core Curriculum for all Bachelor of Music students includes:
PERFORMANCE:
• 8 semesters of Applied Lessons
• Large Ensemble experience (2-8 semesters depending on the major)
• Chamber music (varies by instrument in the applied major)

ENSEMBLES AT EASTMAN
• Undergraduate students participate in large ensembles beginning

the first semester of their freshman year.
• With two rotations of each ensemble performing three to four

concerts each semester, undergraduates are able to gain
experience playing a great variety of parts.

LOGAN MOHR Class of 2019

Logan is from New Hope, Pennsylvania
and is majoring in jazz saxophone performance.

JAZZ STUDIES AT EASTMAN
• All jazz and contemporary media majors complete a curriculum

that is designed to give the student a comprehensive foundation
in jazz studies, performance, and writing.
• Class requirements include jazz history, jazz theory, composition
and arranging, jazz performance workshops, ensembles,
and lessons.
• Students are also encouraged to explore performance
opportunities outside of the curricular requirements.
• Jazz Forum meets once a week and is required for all jazz majors
regardless of instrument or degree level. It is a studio class led
as a master class for the entire department.

JOHN HOLLENBECK (BM ’90, Applied Music,
MM ’91, Jazz Studies)

John is a Grammy-nominated composer-performer,
and founder of the Claudia Quintet.

to compose; the ensembles were at such a high level that

EASTMAN HUMANITIES DEPARTMENT:
The Humanities Department functions like a small liberal arts
college within the Eastman School of Music by offering students
a broad range of intellectually stimulating courses in numerous
academic disciplines, including Anthropology, Art History, American
Studies, English, English as a Second Language, Film Studies,
French, German, History, Italian, Philosophy, Political Science,
Psychology, Visual Cultural Studies, as well as Gender and

about how we find peace in the midst of chaos …

MASTER CLASS: RENEÉ FLEMING (MM ‘83)
Eastman gives students the unique opportunity to learn
firsthand from people who are active in their musical
professions and who have valuable advice to offer
young musicians.
Eastman hosts numerous guest master classes each year
including visits by Distiguished Visiting Artists Renée Fleming
(2016-2020) and David Zinman (2017-2019).

In addition to their curricular ensemble requirements, Eastman students often take
advantage of their own performance opportunities in and around Rochester. These include
student-created groups, local festivals, and gigs through Eastman’s online gig service.

YUKI NUMATA RESNICK (BM ’03 Applied Music) 17

Yuki is a founder and co-director of Buffalo String Works, which provides
music lessons for children of refugee and immigrant families on the
west side of Buffalo, New York. A member of the Talea Ensemble, she is
a much sought-after performer of new music.
“I had a lot of terrific experiences at Eastman with contemporary music.
I played with the student-run ensemble, Ossia, which collaborated with
Alarm Will Sound in a recording of Steve Reich’s Desert Music. I also
played with conductor Brad Lubman’s school-based group, Musica Nova.
It was through Musica Nova that I had my first run-ins with the music of
John Zorn and Charles Wuorinen and I haven’t looked back since!”

“R ochester is full of musicians, music appreciators, festivals,
venues, and recording studios. Bands and solo acts play
year-round, all around town, and when I am not performing,
I find myself going to hear my friends and soon-to-be friends
play shows almost every weekend and even weeknights.”

XEROX ROCHESTER INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL

Held annually on and around the Eastman School of Music
campus, the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival is a 9
day jazz festival which draws hundreds of thousands (nearly
205,000 in 2016). There were over 350 concerts performed
at 19 venues during the 2016 festival. Many Eastman
students perform as a part of this festival every year. For more

Benton is from Seattle, Washington and is majoring in flute performance.

CHAMBER MUSIC AT EASTMAN
Over fifty ensembles are formed each semester, and all complete a
program of study that involves weekly coachings, guest masterclasses,
and performances both in school and in the Greater Rochester
community.
Chamber music study at Eastman fills a unique role in that it requires
students to synthesize many different aspects of their
study, including:
• Technical mastery of their instrument
• Ability to make informed decisions about interpretation based on

theoretical and historic knowledge
• Development of effective rehearsal techniques and

interpersonal skills
• The ability to communicate with an audience and to serve as an

ambassador for classical music

CHAMBER MUSIC FACULTY

Eastman’s thriving chamber music culture is anchored by the
resident faculty ensemble, the Ying Quartet. Many other faculty
members also bring a wealth of experience to their chamber music
teaching. Faculty coaches include current and former members of
the Tokyo Quartet, Kopelman Quartet, I Musici, Los Angeles Piano
Quartet, Borodin Quartet, New Arts Trio, Peabody Trio, Rochester
Philharmonic Brass Quintet, and others.

CLASSES AT THE UNIVERSITY
OF ROCHESTER’S RIVER CAMPUS

Any Eastman student is able to take classes at the
University’s College of Arts, Sciences & Engineering.
Students interested in taking these classes can do
so without having to apply, and can even pursue an
academic minor. Students interested in being considered
for the dual degree program must apply to Eastman
and to the College. Approximately 87 Eastman students
(17%) are pursuing a dual degree.

Jordan is from Ridgefield, Connecticut
and is majoring in vocal performance.

“I have been fortunate enough to have been a part
of four Eastman productions in my three years at
Eastman thus far. My greatest opportunity came
this year when I got the chance to sing the leading
role of “Frederic”, alongside some of my best friends,
in a production of Pirates of Penzance where we
had the honor of collaborating with the Rochester
Philharmonic Orchestra.”

KATHRYN LEWEK (BM ’06, Applied Music,
MM ’08, Performance and Literature)

Kathryn made her Metropolitan Opera debut in 2013 as the Queen of the
Night in Mozart’s Magic Flute, establishing this as her signature role
in many subsequent performances world-wide. She recently made her
Salzburg Festival debut, alongside Cecilia Bartoli, in the role of Ginevra in
Handel’s Ariodante.
“B efore Eastman, I felt out of place with my peers, who wanted to explore
their interests before choosing a career. I knew exactly what I wanted to do
after high school. Eastman gave me the opportunity to immerse myself in
music; as soon as I arrived, I went to work.”

Reagan is from Nashville, Tennessee and is double majoring in
composition and music education.

COMPOSITION AT EASTMAN
• Undergraduate composition majors study with Eastman’s

artist faculty and perform in major ensembles
• Individual composition tutorials occur once a week

throughout the duration of the program.
• For their composition tutorials, students and faculty are

rotated so that no student ordinarily studies with the same
teacher for more than one year.
• Composition students at Eastman have many opportunities
to hear their works presented in a variety of performance
settings: Composers Forum, Composers Sinfonietta,
Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, choral readings, Ossia, student
recitals, school ensemble concerts, and much more.

COMPOSITION FOR NON-MAJORS

The Composition Department is also dedicated to teaching
non-majors to compose contemporary concert music. Students who
take the course are assigned to a private teacher for a half-hour
tutorial every week.

Jing Tian is from Kemayan, Malaysia
and is double-majoring in general music education

“My project is going to be focused on Ladysmith Black
Mambazo’s music, specifically on the role they play
in representing South African choral music and how
their work celebrates South Africa’s political history.
I like how the Musical Arts program encourages us
to use our critical thinking and creativity to mold an
individualized project based on our own interests, it
really allows us to broaden our horizons as musicians.”

Igor is Assistant Professor of Piano at the University of Oklahoma,
an active concert pianist, and a professional magician.
“To complement my piano performance studies at Eastman, I
entered the Musical Arts major program, which enabled me to craft
an interdisciplinary curriculum and work toward a senior project.
I wanted to incorporate elements of magic into a piano recital,
revealing a story hidden behind a piece of music with a visual

Sterling is from Carmichael, California and is double-majoring
in jazz piano performance and music education.

MUSIC TEACHING AND LEARNING AT EASTMAN
• Undergraduate music education majors study with Eastman’s

artist faculty and perform in major ensembles.
• Class requirements include music theory, music history, technique

classes for each instrument type, and courses in psychology.
• Classroom observations begin in the first semester of study

and continue throughout the course of study.
• Students pursuing a double-major have the option to complete

their student teaching experience requirements through the
FORTE program*.
* T he FORTE ( four years plus teaching experience) program is a
ninth semester of tuition-free enrollment for selected music education
majors who are double majoring or pursuing a dual degree. This
semester is devoted exclusively to the completion of the student
teaching experience.

Sean is a member and Technical Director of the 2017
Grammy-Winning Third Coast Percussion Ensemble.
