FOR A SPECIAL EASTMAN BEYOND THE BASICS
PERFORMANCE SERIES
SUBSCRIPTION OFFER! Dear Friends,

TABLE of CONTENTS I’m sure many of you are familiar with the idea of a “basic repertoire”
in classical music, as presented in books with such titles as The 100
EASTMAN OPERA THEATRE 3 Greatest Pieces of Classical Music. For a very long time, the “basic
repertoire” was mostly limited to a couple of centuries of Western
WIND ENSEMBLES 4 European music. But in recent years, as audience tastes have diversified,
programs have come to include music of non-Western cultures,
ORCHESTRAS 5 medieval and Renaissance music, pop and rock music, and music by
21st-century composers. A string quartet may play tunes by Bill Evans
ORGAN 6 or Queen alongside Beethoven or Schumann; a chamber group may
include mandolins, percussion, or instruments of other cultures.
CHAMBER MUSIC AND
STUDIO ENSEMBLES 8 For many of us, this is an invigorating change, bringing new audiences
to our performances. For a long time, it has been a hallmark of our
CHORAL 9 Eastman concert season, and this year is no exception.
