The 5 Different Types of Mattresses
You Never Knew About

Created By: Christine Sparks

• Memory foam or innerspring? Latex or hybrid? When purchasing a new mattress,

today’s shoppers have more options than ever to choose from. And with new
innovations in materials and technology constantly being introduced by mattress
manufacturers, it can be hard to keep up with them all.

• Most sleepers are familiar with the traditional innerspring mattress. And some

people even have a working knowledge of pocket coil mattress technology. But
unless you’re an avid follower of sleep products and technology, you probably don’t
know all there is know about today’s mattress products. To bring you up to date,
here are five different types of mattresses you never knew about – but should.

1. Memory-Foam Mattress

• Memory foam was developed as part of a NASA contract in the 1970s to

improve seat cushioning and crash protection for airline pilots and
passengers. The project proved to be very successful, and engineers and
designers soon began using the unique material in a wide variety of
commercial products, including mattresses. In a short time, memory foam
mattresses have become one of the most popular designs on the market.

2. Innerspring Mattress

• Innerspring mattresses are the oldest and one of the most popular of modern

mattress designs. Manufacturers use a variety of steel coil support systems, such as
springs connected into a single unit or individually wrapped pocketed coils, to
construct these durable mattresses. Then they cover the innersprings with various
types of padding or upholstery materials, which results in a surprisingly comfortable
sleep experience. And with today’s advanced mattress materials such as foams,
fibers, and additional layers of smaller steel springs, innerspring mattresses are
stronger and more comfortable than ever. As one of the more affordable mattress
types on the market, the innerspring remains a top seller around the world.

3. Hybrid Mattress

• While the memory foam layers are delivering all this comfort, the coil system

helps to retain the “bounciness” that many people enjoy with traditional
innerspring mattresses. It also gives hybrid mattresses a traditional mattress
shape, as opposed to the straight lines and low profile of memory foam
mattresses. Hybrid mattresses are often less expensive than memory foam
mattresses, making them a good choice for budget-conscious shoppers, and
they typically perform better than low-end memory foam mattresses.

4. Latex Mattress

• Latex mattresses offer two big advantages. One of the more durable, resilient

mattress materials, latex supports sleepers without placing excess pressure on
hips, shoulders and other area while supporting proper alignment. AS a
result, they help reduce and/or prevent paint in sensitive areas, including the
lower back. Latex mattresses are also good at suppressing motion. So if one
sleeper tosses and turns a lot, it won’t have as much impact on their partner.

5. Foam Mattress

• Constructed of different weights and densities of petrochemical-based flexible

polyurethane foams or latex rubber foams, foam mattresses provide a cost-effective
alternative to more sophisticated mattress options. Designed to give support to the
very edge of the bed, these mattresses facilitate support and comfort from corner to
corner – a real advantage for restless sleepers who tend to wander all over the
mattress during the night. With the foam-type mattress, buyers can find a number
of options for the material, such as memory foam, gel foam, and latex or solid
foam. Comparing and contrasting the advantages and disadvantages of the many
different types of foam materials is essential for making a wise purchase decision.
