Executive summary

The challenge of current trends in design research
and point out the gap between aesthetic and
technical need, and the chasm between ambiguous
and quantified in design practice. So, it is hardly to
surprising the product designers fail to combine a
systematical methodology in analyzing design
activity. This research assessed the comprehensible
and abilities of Function Means Analysis in mapping
and analyzing design activities. It’s attempts to
provide a practical guidance to discuss a few key
demands on structuring a new concept of design
such foundation, include with the design principles
and monitoring used for concept solution strategy.
The establishment of basic structure is achieved by
connecting one process of each ablution sub-
function.

Executive summary

This design development is directly related to the investigation of
present manufacturing process that involved forms, materials and
techniques. The material use in this work is typical ceramic body
namely porcelain. Porcelain is composed from china clay, feldspar
and quartz. In this project, the challenge is to design forms within
the limitations of the porcelain body which are the strength after
casting and firing. In this work, the present porcelain body modified
using a waste marble. The obtained marble waste was grinded into
dust and mixed into porcelain body slips. Standard slip casting
characteristic was determined. Later the drying and firing
characteristics were also determined, specifically the strength. The
strength enhancement was observed as well as other properties
enhancement. Thus the intricate design can be developed.

Abstract

Bringing a successful product to market is a team effort which involves creative processes especially to the department of New Product Development (NPD) in the industry. It is
however, catching up with the new product design development exploration and updating detail product requirement involves many factors such as usability, utility and user
experiences. By putting up an effective item for user in the market is a collaboration. While designers in the industry are dependable for usability, utility and whatever remains of what
encountered by user in their daily activities, there are numerous components which add to the achievement or disappointment of new product development that requires structured
procedural in designing that may be challenging for designer in the industry. Often times different measure requires differ approach in so called new product development modalities.
Therefore, New Product Development course aim to provide the essential steps fundamental through ‘Design Thinking’ modalities that will enable designer to work efficiently and
achieve goals without too many detours through 2 critical issues in which is ‘structuring thinking’ and ‘actions’ for the designer and practitioner collectively. In advanced, this course will
enable designer to communicate as in a group discussion as well as presenting to the user; whilst not losing his ways in a complex design processes.

Objectives Novelty Articulate

The NPD course inspired through 5 progressive objectives as per listed below and NPD course presents design methods of approaches that are very useful for
structured in accordance to type of Design Thinking (DT) activity where designers designer (both during his time as a student or as a practitioner); both for academic
typically involved: project or industrial project. Overall the course can be look through 5 valuable
novelties that synergizing designers design influences in NPD for the industry:
• To discover insights in creating understanding while designing. Value 1: Cross-functional development teams.

Dr. Rusmadiah Bin Anwar is currently a Deputy Dean (Academic), Faculty
of Art & Design, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). He completed his
Ph.D. in Art and Design (2016); MA Design Technology (2009); BA (Hons)
Industrial Ceramics (2003); and BDes Ceramics (2002) at the Faculty of Art
and Design, UiTM. He was awarded Malaysia Ministry of Higher Education
Scholarship under SLAI Program in 2013. Upon completion of Doctorate
Degree, he has presented his research in many conferences locally and
internationally and has published his work in several publications such
journals, chapter-in-book, and proceedings with all indexed by Scopus and
ISI Thomson. During his doctorate study, he actively involved as project
leader and project member for several National Research Grant Scheme
such Social Entrepreneurial Grant, Prototype Research Grant Scheme,
Knowledge Transfer Program, and Research Acculturation Grant Scheme.
Besides, he engaged in professional ventures as an Associate Member of
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Malaysia and
Collective Member (University) for the International Academy of Ceramics,
Geneva (NGO official partner of UNESCO). Appointed as a member of
Technical Committee on Ceramic Materials & Sanitary Fittings for SIRIM
Bhd and Program Chairs and Technical Committee for several of IEEE
conferences. As a research member of the National Design Center and
Formgiving Design Research Group, UiTM, he is currently an active
researcher focusing on Practiced-Based Design and Laboratory-Based
Design Method in investigating design activity and human behaviour. He is
widely published in journals and books, and is one of the most cited
authors on art and design research in Malaysia.
