Amur Leopard

Cassandra and Mariana

Leo the
leopard

By:Cassandra Spiro & Mariana Lanuza

Hello!

I am Leo the Leopard

I am here because I wanted to tell you my story.

2

1.

Family

This is my mom and my older
brother.

3

2.

Home

We live in the Amur Heilong
Landscape, which spans both the
Russian Far East and adjacent
areas of China.

4

2.

Home

We are a rare subspecies of
leopards that has adapted to life in
the temperate forests that make
up the northernmost part of the
species’ range. There are only 84 of
us left in the WHOLE World.

5

3.

Temperature :

I live in the cold climate. My fur
is thick and it helps me be
warm.

6

4.

me:

My fur can be about 7.5
centimeters long. When I am in
the snow my fur adapted for me
to hide in it.

7

5.

FOOd:

Like all big cats, members of this
species are carnivores. That means that
we get their energy by eating other
animals.
My FAVORITE ♡ foods are roe deer, sika
deer, hares, and badgers.

8

6.

Importance:

We are very important for the ecosystem
and biodiversity. We help keep a balance in
the population growth of the animals we

prey on loke deer.

9

Deers are our favorite meal.
But now humans like to keep
them in their farms to sell for
eating. When we searched for
deers to eat in their farms
they shoot us.

10

Like the Without our prey we can’t
DOMINO survive. Prey population is
EFFECT becoming more and more
insufficient. Our food chain
is collapsing. We all rely on
each other.

11

Humans like our fur to
sell since it could be

really expensive.
$1,000 per pelt!

12

80 percent of our habitat was lost
due to logging, forest fires, and
agricultural land conversion projects
(this loss of habitat also affected our
prey species, which have become
increasingly scarce as well).

13

This is my
mom...

14

15

I am worried for
her.
She’s very sick.

16

Over the last few decades
many new animal diseases
have emerged, and older
diseases have spread to new
areas. Part of this is due to
increased trade and travel,
which brings pathogens to
new regions.

17

IT seems like a virus is
going among animals in
our ecosystem. It is called
infection with canine
distemper virus (CDV).

It is contagious and
began transmitting from
our prey, and later to us.

18

I remember

I remember

In 1994 I heard the news said a CDV
outbreak in Tanzania killed over 1,000
lions in the Serengeti National Park.
According to scientists small populations
of tigers like us is 65 percent more likely
to go extinct when they’re exposed to
CDV.

20

My brother is starting to
get sick too

21

HUmans found him

and tried to help us. He is two years
old.

22

The WWF is helping us

World Wide Fund for Nature

23

With their help Russia has
increased from 27-32 to
70-75 in the last 15 years,
while China has recorded an
increase of 13-15 individuals
in bordering provinces.
If we keep on the good work
my family can stay and be
healthy!

24

But they need your help to

We All do.

You can start by telling our
story.

GLOBAl awareness is very
important so we are not
forgotten.

25

Tell our
story
