EUROPE
Wächtersbach is on the DB line between Hanau and Fulda, but is also the start of the 600mm gauge line to Bad Orb. Though the
branch was originally standard gauge it was converted to narrow gauge in 2001 and 2002 when heritage services commenced to
the spa town of Bad Orb. The short platform is accessed by a door (normally locked) in the subway. Steam locomotive EMMA
(4382/1923) has arrived on a holiday weekend service from Bad Orb and must push back to the run-round loop to change ends.
The return journey is 6.5km, but trains used to run a further 1.7km to a military training camp.
[225] Albania – Services slowly resuming
The summer issue of the European Rail Timetable shows a train pair between Rrogozhinë and Elbasan,
as well as the two between Kashar and Durrës. Average speed about 20 km/hr.
[226] Austria – Waldmühle branch saved
The Liesing to Waldmühle branch in south western Wien was last reported in BLNI 1225.022 as having
been leased from ÖBB (who want to sell the line) by the municipality of Perchtoldsdorf. The
municipalities of Perchtoldsdorf and Kaltenleutgeben have now purchased the line and in the short
term at least, expect a heritage tourist operation to run on it.
[227] Bosnia/Croatia - Re-opening initiative
An agreement was signed in Zagreb on 11 May 11 whereby Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia have
agreed to seek European Union funding to rehabilitate and reopen the 177·9 km Una line between
Novi Grad (also called Bosanski Novi) and Knin. This is actually the shortest rail route between Zagreb
and the Adriatic port of Split, but the southern half has been out of use since being badly damaged
during the Yugoslav civil war of 1991-96. The line crosses the border many times.
A PTG Tour in 2014 reached Martin Brod, which is about halfway along the Una line and is used by weekly or fortnightly freights.
Beyond the tunnel at the south end of the station the line to Knin is closed.
[228] Czech Republic - Praha – Warszawa overnight trains diverted
On the nights of 8/9 and 9/10 July EN476 and EN477 are diverted via the Hradec Králové avoiding line
due to work between Kolín and Pardubice.
[229] Czech Republic – Summer only services
The Hvozdnický expres runs from 27 May to 1 October between Opava východ and Svobodné
Heřmanice, with a train pair on Fridays and three train pairs on Saturdays and Sundays.
Times at: http://www.railwaycapital.cz/userFiles/2017/314-2017.pdf
Trains also run on Saturdays between Vojkovice nad Ohří and Kyselka in July and August under the
name Mattoni expres. Times at:

[230] France - Tourist trains suspended between CFCB Saint-Brieuc and Loudéac
CFCB is the only standard gauge preservation association in Brittany. It is based at Loudéac on the
freight only branch line from Saint Brieuc. Freight traffic has become non-existent and as a result the
line is no longer maintained. Traffic along the line has been suspended for an undefined period due to
state of the track. CFCB are in discussion with SNCF Reseau and the local authorities to try and resolve
the position, but do not anticipate operating any trains until at least the autumn of 2017. This is
obviously very serious for the association whose income depends on running its tourist trains. Courtesy
of the SNCF Society.
[231] France – TER-Mer extras
The following bucket and spade trains take rare track on 8+9+22+23 July 5+19+20 August.
Lesquin - Lille Sud - Lille Delivrance - Perenchies: 846927 Hirson -Dunkerque, and return, all dates.
846902 Aulnoye – Dunkerque and return 6 August only
Somain-Douai- Lens used by 846924 Aulnoye -Dunkerque and return
Lille Flandres avoiding line. 846952 Dunkerque -Hirson all 4 weekends (note outbound service does
not take this line). Tickets may be booked from 26 June via www.hautsdefrance.fr
[232] France - Lines in peril in Auvergne Rhône-Alpes
Lines re-open, but others continue to close. The outlook is bleak for several lines due to the policies of
Auvergne Rhône-Alpes Region (ARA). It is reported that ARA has refused to contribute to the funding
of essential repairs to Saint-Claude (Jura) - Oyonnax(Ain), a line through the gorges of the Bienne river.
This short section, in poor condition, crosses the boundary into Bourgogne Franche-Comté (BFC). In
the absence of repairs, the line will close in December 2017 thus cutting off rail access to Bourg-en-
Bresse and Lyon for the inhabitants of St-Claude and Morez clustered in their deep Jura valleys where
the sun never shines. In 2014, there were seven services daily to Lyon Perrache from St Claude via
Bourg. The line was closed from August 2005 until 2010 for the modernisation and electrification of
Bourg - Nurieux - Bellegarde for the Paris - Geneva TGV trains. Contrary to promises, when the branch
to Oyonnax and Saint Claude was re-opened only one TER was introduced by ARA, later reluctantly
increased to two return services and currently three on week days. One of the most spectacular
railways in France is "La Ligne des Hirondelles", from Saint-Claude to Morez and Andelot (Dôle and
Besançon). This is the responsibility of BFC which has not yet agreed essential funding for repairs to
the line. It is reported that only 6 million euros has been reserved whereas it is estimated that 40
million is required.
Meanwhile, ARA is also unwilling to fund repairs to parts of the Grenoble - Gap line (Ligne des Alpes).
The solution is to share the cost with PACA Region (It is another example of a line that crosses a
regional boundary, Gap being in PACA Region). At present, there is no agreement between ARA and
PACA, though the subject is on the table. The deadline is 2018. Closure would prevent access by rail
from Grenoble to Briançon particularly pertinent in the winter. Courtesy of the SNCF Society
[233] Germany/Poland – More diversion dates over Horka to Węgliniec freight line
More dates for diversions of the weekend train pair from Berlin to Wrocław via Horka to Węgliniec are
17/18, 24/25 June, 19/20, 26/27 August and 2 September 2017. Eastbound train leaves Cottbus just
before 10:00 both days. Westbound leaves Węgliniec 18:10 SuO, 21:18 SO
[234] Germany – Full length of Weißeritztalbahn finally reopens
The Weißeritztalbahn narrow-gauge line to the south-west of Dresden has released its new timetable
for services from 19 June, which is when scheduled services resume for the first time in 15 years over
the 11km-long southern section of the line between Dippoldiswalde and Kurort Kipsdorf, which was
destroyed in 2002 by heavy flooding. Unfortunately, due to financial constraints imposed by the Land,
the six daily train pairs that currently run between Freital-Hainsberg (the main-line junction) and
Dippoldiswalde are replaced by only two over the full line to Kurort Kipsdorf and one short return
working to Dippoldiswalde.
[235] Germany – Heritage trains run again between Finsterwalde and Lichterfeld
Trains run from Finsterwalde to Lichterfeld F60 again in 2017, though with no start/finish in Falkenberg
(Elster) this year. Sundays only, 11 June to 8 October. Timetable at:
http://www.f60.de/files/fahrplan_2017_f60_bahn.pdf
[236] Germany – Döllnitzbahn branch reopens
The Döllnitzbahn is a private narrow gauge railway in East Germany running from Oschatz to
Nebitzschen and Glossen. The 2.2 km branch from Nebitzschen to Kemmlitz Ort was to reopen to
regular traffic after a celebratory weekend on 10-11 June when trains ran 2.7km to Kemmlitz
Werkbahnhof. This is line 6968, and used to run 6.3km to Kroptewitz.
[237] Germany - Museums-Eisenbahn-Club Losheim
So far this season all trains between Merzig Ost and Dellborner Mühle have been cancelled.
Operations were banned following an official inspection of the track. 2000 new sleepers are required.
[238] Germany - More freight lines in use at Halle
According to station staff at Halle some RB20 services (Halle – Naumburg – Eisenach) are starting from
platform 13a (temporary platform located on the freight lines avoiding Halle station) and using goods
lines as far as Halle Ammendorf. Previously only S-Bahn trains to Halle Nietleben used this platform.
[239] Germany - No museum trains to Dombühl for a while
Line 5331 runs from Nördlingen to Dinkelsbühl and Dombühl and is a heritage railway. However there
are no trains using the line until further notice due to the ongoing construction work in the DB railway
stations in Nördlingen and Dombühl, the latter being complete reconstruction of the station as part of
an S-Bahn extension and to make space for the widening of federal road 25.
[240] Germany – One week experimental service
Operator SPNV conducted a trial service with 5 train pairs between Lüneburg and Bleckede (otherwise
used only by heritage trains) from 15 to 19 May using a preserved DMU. It is believed this is part of an
attempt to reopen the line to regular passenger trains.
[241] Germany – Tram news
Chemnitz - The new tramline from Bernsbachplatz through Turnstrasse to Stadlerplatz has opened.
Stadtlerplatz to the Technical University will open in december, along with the new connection onto
the line to Aue. Construction work at the Zentralhaltestelle (ZH) currently requires a detour until mid
2018 over the Brückenstraße for tram routes between Hauptbahnhof and ZH.
Dresden - Construction of the new tram line through Oskarstraße (lines 9/13) began in April, but
following a legal challenge work has been stopped, and may not resume for a long time. This means
Querallee - J.-Otto-Strasse – Wasaplatz remains in service, despite parts of it being restricted to
20km/h.
Naumburg - Tramlines are being extended 80 metres from a neighbouring road to the forecourt of the
railway station and should be ready in 2018.
[242] Italy – The end of the Milan Limbiate tramway?
BLNI 1231.147 described ATM line 179 which runs from Comasina, the northern terminus of line 3 of
the Metro, about 12 km north to Limbiate. ATM have long wanted to close the line and recently the
service schedule has been changed, forcing travellers to change trams halfway. Journey time has been
doubled and the number of trains halved. Parallel buses have been introduced with shorter travelling
times. From 10 June the service was suspended, allegedly for "engineering works". It seems unlikely
that it will reopen.
[243] Italy – Tourist trains running Moccone to San Nicola Silvana Mansio again
BLNI Extra 18.B70 reported the partial reopening of a 13 km section of the long closed Pedace -
Camigliatello - San Giovanni In Fiore line for steam hauled tourist services between Moccone and San
Nicola Silvana Mansio. Trains run again this year and timings, dates and a booking page can be found
at: http://www.trenodellasila.it/index.php#anchor1/
The Ferrovie della Calabria were running services from Cosenza to Camigliatello in 2002. Heavily graffitied single car DMU M4
404 waits at Camigliatello station to work the 16:00 service to Cosenza. The stock in the sidings on the right was for steam
specials.
[244] Italy – Napoli Afragola station opens
The high speed station at Napoli Afragola, designed by Zaha Hadid, was formally inaugurated by Prime
Minister Paolo Gentiloni on 6 June, ahead of the start of regular services on 11 June. Design of the
station was awarded to Hadid in 2003 following an international competition, but its construction was
subsequently delayed. The station has been completed over the past two years by Astaldi at a cost of
€60m. Located to the northeast of the city (see map in eBLNI), the through station allows high speed
trains to serve the Napoli region’s 3 million inhabitants without calling at the existing central terminus.
Afragola will initially be served by 18 trains each way per day, nine operated by Trenitalia and nine by
Italo. At present the multi-modal hub provides a bus interchange and car parking. Completion of the
second phase, scheduled for 2022, will see the opening of two extra platforms for regional trains to
Caserta and Benevento (via a new line to Acerra) which will also connect with the Circumvesuviana
railway. The station will also be served by the new Napoli – Bari high speed line. Napoli Afragola is the
latest in a series of high-profile station construction projects on Italy’s north-south Alta Velocità/Alta
Capacità network. Several have been completed, including the rebuilding of Porta Susa in Torino and
the deep-level high speed hub at Bologna Centrale, but others, such as Firenze Belfiore, have also been
significantly delayed. A second out-of-town high speed station for the Napoli conurbation is being
developed at Vesuvio Est, meaning that the Campania region would be the only one in Italy to have
four stations on the AV/AC network.
Napoli Afragola station is certainly different! The design enlarges the public walkway over the eight railway tracks to such a
degree that this walkway becomes the station's main passenger concourse – a bridge housing all the services and facilities for
departing, arriving and connecting passengers, with direct access to all platforms below. Car parking and a bus terminal are also
provided.
[245] Netherlands/Germany - Capacity of Betuweroute to be increased
Dutch infrastructure manager ProRail has begun work to construct a 3km third line between Zevenaar
and the German border on its side of the 174km cross-border Betuweroute freight rail link which
connects the docks at Rotterdam with Germany. Tracklaying should start next year with completion in
December 2018. Capacity will also be increased on the German side with expansion of a 70 km section
of the railway between Emmerich and Oberhausen which is expected to be complete in 2023.
[246] Slovakia – Summer only service
The closed line from Spišské Vlachy to Spišské Podhradie gets three weekend trains pairs between
3 June and 27 August. Trains operated by RU LTE Logistics a Transport Slovakia, s.r.o.
REST OF THE WORLD
[247] Canada – Long distances woes
VIA’s “Canadian” has been subject to repeated delays of late, including several instances of westbound
passengers missing cruise ship connections at Vancouver. 29 April was a case in point, with Vancouver
arrival almost seven hours late, not helped by a dead stand of 155 minutes in Burnaby whilst CN was
busy assembling an intermodal train in Main Yard. On 13 May, cruise passengers were de-trained at
Abbotsford and taxied to their ships, before a new low point was reached on 20 May with arrival 12½
hours late; on this occasion, the train had been held at New Westminster due to vandalism causing
derailment of a CN transfer freight at Lake City. Amtrak has not been immune either; on 10 March, the
17:35 Vancouver to Seattle had to turn back due to a fault with the Crescent Beach swing bridge.
Passengers were, unusually, allowed to spend the night on board, with the train forming the following
morning’s 06:30 Vancouver departure. One of the Amtrak Talgo units was, incidentally, out of service
between 17 January and 13 May, resulting in use of a train of classic bi-level Superliner cars; many
passengers still prefer these, with their reclining seats and glass-top sightseeing car, although others
bemoaned lack of the Talgo’s Business Class and wi-fi.
[248] Canada – Hudson Bay railway seriously damaged
Omnitrax Inc., owners of the Hudson Bay Railway line, say flooding that submerged a section of the
track and stopped service on 23 May has caused "unprecedented and catastrophic" damage that will
take months to repair. A preliminary assessment found the track bed has been washed away in 19
locations and five bridges are visibly damaged. The company said another 30 bridges and 600 culverts
need to be examined further. The railway runs from Winnipeg to Churchill and brings food, supplies
and people to the remote community of 900 popular with tourists for its polar bears and other
northern wildlife. The disruption means goods and people will have to arrive by air, which is much
more expensive. Churchill has no road to the outside world. The situation is made more complex by
the proposed change of ownership of the railway and Port of Churchill. December 2016 saw the
beginning of the process to transfer the assets from OmniTrax Canada to a group of northern
Manitoba First Nations, known as the Missinippi Rail Consortium. A memorandum of understanding
has been signed by the consortium and OmniTrax, which enables the new owners to negotiate with
vendors ahead of the 2017 grain season, although the federal government must still approve the sale.
However, no grain was exported last year and freight services were reduced from twice weekly to
weekly before the flooding. It now seems likely that the future of the railway will depend on
politicians responding to First Nations lobbying.
[249] New Zealand - KiwiRail to restart trains from Claverley towards Kaikoura
New Zealand rail operator KiwiRail has announced that trains are be running on the Main North Line
from Claverley towards Kaikoura for the first time since the 2016 Kaikoura earthquake. The services
will allow 1000-tonne work trains to go as far as Oaro to help make the necessary repairs to get the
line open and carrying freight again.
[250] USA – New AMTRAK train to Roanoke
On 5 June AMTRAK began operating non-scheduled, non-revenue trains between Lynchburg and
Roanoke, Virginia, to train and qualify T&E (train and engine service) crews for a new, extended
Northeast Regional service expected to start in the autumn of this year.
The Northeast Regional service will extend from Lynchburg to Roanoke and will operate one round-trip
seven days per week. AMTRAK, the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT),
Norfolk Southern and the city of Roanoke have been working to bring passenger rail services back to
the city for the first time in four decades. The extended service will provide a same-seat trip to and
from Roanoke and to Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City, and other cities along
the Northeast Corridor. This will be the fourth expansion of intercity passenger rail in the
Commonwealth of Virginia since 2009 following new or additional service to Lynchburg, Richmond,
and Norfolk.
