[BLN 1342]
PREVIOUS PAGE: Between 3 Jun and 9 Dec 1989 there were three Society visits to Parkfield Foundry at
the former Horwich Works (item 4169 above) where there were two Class 03 Locos - 97 members
attended in total and had cab rides in small groups. This was the 3 Jun 1989 visit. (Ian Mortimer.)
4172] Chinnor & Princes Risborough Railway, Diesel Gala 27-29 Mar: Depending on crewing levels,
rides with Network South East 08825/97808 and a shark brake van will run to Risborough Down South
Siding 1 (TRACKmaps 4 p15C Dec 2018) between departures and arrivals at Princes Risborough P4.
4173] A Christmas/New Year Project for you; Chronology of Passenger Stations in Great Britain, 5th
Edition (Apr 2019), Michael Quick: BLN 1336.2391 had an item about the latest 5th Edition of this
excellent and invaluable resource. Thanks to the Railway & Canal Historical Society, it is available for
anyone to download or view free at http://bit.ly/2mlqCjW (do look at it) and is updated to Apr 2019.
Corrections and additional information are always welcome. This is especially true of recent events,
which the complier admits he tended to neglect in concentrating on the past. Please send any
information, updates and correction to Ted Cheers [email protected] or 7 Wealden Hatch,
Wolverhampton, WV10 8TY. IMPORTANT: Please give provenance (evidence) for any statement made.

X.174] ABOVE: E-BLN 1341.X.165 - Guess the location: A clue: This location can be bypassed and
originally swept clean. It is Broom West Signal Box on the former Barnt Green - Redditch - Evesham -
Ashchurch Midland Railway loop. The 1942 box, built to Air Raid Precautions specification, opened
with the new WWII Broom East Jn to Broom South Jn curve from the Stratford-upon-Avon & Midland
Junction Joint (SMJ) line (from Stratford) towards Evesham. This then allowed through running
between Gloucester (and South Wales) to London as an alternative to other recognised routes.
The curve ran in the tree gap, top left of the box and closed with the line to Stratford from 13 Jun
1960. Goods trains - including iron ore from the Banbury area - then used a new curve onto the SMJ at
Stratford-upon-Avon. Broom East Box was at the other end of the new curve and Broom Junction Box
(formerly Broom South Junction, we hope you are following this) was at the station end of the new
triangle. Redditch to Evesham passenger rail services ceased from 1 Oct 1962 due to an unsafe bridge,
but British Railways replacement buses ran to 17 Jun 1963. The A46 (the Evesham bypass here) runs
alongside the trackbed here but in places is on the old trackbed. The box, now owned by a local
farmer, is windowless and derelict but would be difficult to demolish! (Robert Green, 30 Nov 2019.)

X.175] ABOVE Guess the location, e-BLN 1342: The path left of the trees to the road was the original
station entrance at this appealing location. Answer in e-BLN 1343. (Geoff Brockett, 30 Jul 2019.)
