RRP £15.99. For over 30 years, the author (a Society member) has been documenting and photographing developments on this line. As a strategic planner in local government, he has had both a personal and professional interest in the changes to the route and has been in an excellent position to record the significant milestones along the way. Mike explains the background to the changes with insight into what might have been, should other options have been pursued. Following an introduction setting out the general context of the route and a synopsis of its recent history, the bulk of the book forms an illustrated chronological history. The format is two images per page with informative captions. The colour images which are of a high quality and almost all the author's own work, ranging from 1986 to 2022. As well as infrastructure development, the photographs record the changes to rolling stock and operators over the decades and consider recent station developments along with ongoing infrastructure constraints such as at Ely. It is an excellent, readable book, with the benefit of an 'inside' perspective of a period when the line's fortunes changed from rationalisation, partial singling and threatened closure to capacity/service enhancements, 8-car EMUs and new station openings. (John Hampson.) 2453] Win free ScotRail tickets: https://tinyurl.com/3cw8v2m3 is a chance for our members resident in Scotland to win tickets for any Scotrail return journey for a group of up to four travelling together.
