GREETINGS FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Graduates,
Today, as you begin the next step in your professional and personal lives, I
applaud your accomplishments, and on behalf of the Dominican University
community, I wish you all success and happiness in the future.
Commencement is indeed a moment to celebrate accomplishments. It is also
an occasion to be a bit reflective about mission. Today Dominican provides
you with a degree. Hopefully, you take away much more—a sense of self-
worth, a curiosity about learning and a commitment not only to succeed, but
also to serve.
In veritas and in caritas, may all your dreams come true.
Sincerely,

Donna M. Carroll
President

Queridos graduados,
Atentamente,

Donna M. Carroll
Presidenta

GRADUATE HONORED GUESTS

HONORARY DEGREE
Paula Grabler, MD
HONORARY DEGREE AND
COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER
David Ansell, MD

The alarming health disparities made transparent during the COVID-19 pandemic are not a surprise to Drs. David Ansell
and Paula Grabler, partners in life, work and advocacy. Both doctors currently are affiliated with Rush University Medical
Center, and trained at Cook County Hospital, often referred to as the health care provider of last resort for Chicago’s
uninsured. Both know that zip code can mean more to a person’s health and life expectancy than their genetic code. And
both are involved in efforts to combat our country’s shamefully bifurcated health care system.
Dr. Grabler, assistant professor in the Department of Diagnostic Radiology and nuclear medicine at Rush Medical College,
has been treating breast cancer patients for decades and has witnessed the devastating impact of cancer on Black women
who do not have access to routine mammograms and early treatment. She is highly regarded for her holistic treatment of
cancer patients, before and after surgery.
As senior vice president for community health equity, Dr. Ansell is leading Rush’s efforts to serve as a catalyst for the
revitalization of Chicago’s West Side. In his critically acclaimed memoir, County: Life, Death and Politics at Chicago’s Public
Hospital, Dr. Ansell argues that the politics revolving around health care creates a caste system that segregates people by
insurance status and often contributes to avoidable deaths. In his second book, The Death Gap: How Inequity Kills, he asserts
that the life expectancy gap between the Austin neighborhood and Oak Park, where he and Dr. Grabler have lived for four
decades, is the result of systemic racism and entrenched poverty.

ACADEMIC REGALIA / MACE

The custom of wearing academic regalia goes back to the universities of the Middle Ages and adapts the style of clergy, who
were the literate class. A long, hooded gown indicated the role of the scholar. Most of the early academic garments were black,
but at Oxford and Cambridge, touches of color were added during the Renaissance. The regalia worn at the universities across
Europe became increasingly colorful. Academic caps of various shapes eventually replaced the hood as a head covering.
Around 1885, American students and faculty expressed interest in wearing caps and gowns at commencement ceremonies to
add dignity. An Intercollegiate Commission presented American institutions of higher learning with the Intercollegiate Code in
1895, regulating the design of gowns and hoods, as well as the colors and materials to be used. It is now possible to recognize
the degree-granting institution, as well as the degree and the field of study of the person wearing academic regalia.
The Bachelor of Arts ordinarily wears a black gown with long, pointed sleeves. The master’s gown has oblong sleeves. Bell-
shaped sleeves crossed with three wide bands of velvet indicate the doctor’s gown. Presidential gowns became traditional
during the 20th century. They are usually designed in the institution’s colors and feature four bands of velvet on each sleeve.
The square “Oxford Cap” (or mortarboard), with its flat crown, is worn for most degrees, although the smaller, soft cap is
becoming more common.
Hoods for Dominican University graduate degrees have the following colors:

Business: Drab
Conflict Resolution: White
Education: Light Blue
Library and Information Science: Yellow
Nutrition: Gold
Physician Assistant: Green
Social Work: Citron

About The University Mace
The University Mace Bearer leads the convocation procession carrying the Dominican University mace. Originally a heavy
club used on the medieval battlefield, the mace has become a symbol of authority. Our university mace symbolizes our
commitment to our Catholic and Dominican mission, featuring the enduring Dominican Caritas et Veritas shield. Our mace
was designed by Magdelena Malachowska ’99 and created by Berthold Schweiger, a local woodworker.
John Jenks, PhD, Professor of Communication and President of the Faculty Senate, is bearing the Mace at the Undergraduate
Commencement. James Scherrer, PhD, Professor of Social Work and Vice President of the Faculty Senate, is bearing the Mace
at the Graduate Commencement.
