For the Parents/Guardian
This self-learning module was designed to help learners to easily
understand the lessons. On the other hand, parents or guardians are

teachers that their children may have. We hope that this module will not just
help the learners to be responsible in studying but also give both parents and
learners the opportunity to bond.

MUSICAL ELEMENTS
It takes several materials to form an object. If you put these materials
together, you will create an item or a thing. The same is true with music.
“Musical elements” are formed by putting together seven elements such as
timbre, pitch, rhythm, tempo, form, dynamics and texture.
In this lesson you will learn to identify the musical elements of East Asia
specifically music of Japan, China and Korea.
TIMBRE Also known as “Tone Color”, it describes the sound
(e.g. vibrato, mellow, warm, etc.).
PITCH Identify the sound if it is “high” or “low.”
RHYTHM Describe the music if it is “long” or “short.”
TEMPO Identify the speed of music if it is “fast” or “slow.”
FORM Also known as “musical plan” (e.g. verses, refrain, etc.).
Identify the sound if it is crescendo or decrescendo.
DYNAMICS Crescendo is best described as “loud” and
Decrescendo as “soft.”
TEXTURE Identify the layer of sounds in a composition. It is
either monophony, homophony or polyphony.
>Monophony if you can hear a single sound (e.g. solo
voice or a solo instrument).
>Homophony if you can hear two sounds (e.g. a singer
with an instrument).
>Polyphony if you can hear more than two sounds (e.g.
an orchestra or collaboration of more than two musical
instruments).

Folk songs are influenced by a country’s tradition. One of Japan’s
traditional folk songs is entitled “Sakura” also known as “Cherry Blossom”. This
song is inspired by the country’s famous festival named Sakura. If Japan has
Sakura, China has “Mo Li Hua” as their traditional folk song. It is about the
custom of giving jasmine flower that is popular in China. Lastly, Korean folk
song is known as “Arirang” that literally means “the hill”. The song express the
sadness of parting that usually happens in Korea’s foothill.
E What is more?
Differentiate Japan, China and Korea traditional song. Write your answer
on a separate sheet of paper.
