For the Parents/Guardian

This module is an effective mode of instructional materials for Physical
Education that could be more helpful to parents/guardian. The teaching
methods used to help the parents/guardian in Physical Education must be
interesting in the easiest way as possible. This present different approach in
presenting and developing the lessons, making it relevant and meaningful to
life

For the Learner

This module serves as an independent unit of instruction that will thoroughly
guide the learners. This was developed and designed to make learning easier,
resourceful and challenging for every learner. A modular tool that presents and
explains the topics that greatly serves as a handbook.

I What I need to know?

An expert was once a beginner. As you read this module, you’re going to
start to learn and begin to manage your weight, eating habits and lifestyle. You
will be provided different activities that will test your prior knowledge, skills,
interest and develop your understanding in different lesson and activities. This
module will help you get started and be mentally, socially and physically ready for
the next part.

The module is divided into three lessons:
• Lesson 1 – Lifestyle and Managing it
• Lesson 2 – Weight and Managing it
• Lesson 3 – Modifying Eating Habits
After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. Describe the meaning and importance of managing weight and lifestyle;
2. Understand risk factors for lifestyle diseases (obesity, diabetes, heart

disease)
3. Assess eating habits based on the Philippine Food Pyramid/My Food Plate.

Are you physically healthy? Do you usually eat healthy food? How do you
handle your daily routine? This module will help you know and develop your
lifestyle, manage your weight and also modify your eating habits. Engaging to
different recreational activity will help you stay mentally and physically healthy.

Draw four kinds of recreational activities that you usually see in your
community. Why do you think people do these kinds of activities? Give some
reasons.

Lifestyle and Managing It

Lifestyle is what we called individual interest, opinion, behavior,
behavioral orientation or just simple means a way of person lives. Our everyday
routine at home, school or at work, is an example of individual behavior.

Managing your lifestyle is very important. Living a balanced life that
includes eating proper healthy food, daily exercise, enough sleep and a good
relationship to others. You might find it hard to attain but when you modify your
lifestyle it will gradually change you and make you physically and mentally
healthy.

Non-communicable disease

Non-communicable disease or NCD are long lasting and progress slowly,
and thus they are sometimes also referred to as chronic disease.

Four Major Types of NCD

1. Cardiovascular disease (Ex. Heat attacks and stroke)
2. Cancer
3. Chronic respiratory disease (Ex. Asthma)
4. Diabetes

Weight and Managing It

Weight management refers to a set of practice and behavior that are neces-
sary to keep one’s weight at a healthful level. Also known as “dieting,” since it in-
volves more than regulation of food intake or treatment of overweight people. Peo-
ple diagnosed with eating disorders who are not obese or overweight still need to
practice weight management.

Overweight and Obese

Overweight and obese are not the same thing. People who are over-
weight more than they should compared with set standards for their height. The
excess weight may come from muscle tissue, body water, or bone, as well as from
fat. A person who is obese has too much fat in comparison to other types of body
tissue; hence, it is possible to be overweight being obese.

Body Mass Index (BMI)

Body Mass Index or BMI, is a common measures of weight status in

adults.

Formula:

BMI = wt in kg = 59 kg = 23 kg/m2

Normal 18.5-24.9
Overweight 25.0-29.9

The term eating habits (or food habits) refers to how and why people eat,
what food they eat, and with whom they are eating, as well as the ways people
obtain, store, use and discard food. Individual, social, cultural, religious, econom-
ic, environmental, and political factors all influence people’s eating habits.

A modification in your eating habits is needed most especially when you
are at risk of disease. Small and simple changes like adding more fruits to your
diet can make a difference to your health. However, some situations may need
major changes in one’s lifestyle. Some of the strategies in changing eating habits
include making a plan and sticking to it.
