Whitney Snow, Director
Frozen blew into the zeitgeist in 2013 and continues to touch the hearts of children and adults. This story is a special one. No longer is “true love’s kiss” the remedy to save the day in fairytales. To be sure, it is true love, but the Disney definition of love has expanded to the true love of friends and family, especially two sisters.
Anna and Elsa are polar opposites. Anna is a summer personified; born on the Summer Solstice, impulsive, eager, and a little clumsy. Elsa is winter embodied; born on the Winter Solstice, a pillar of restraint, poise, and always attempting to hold onto control. They fight hard, as sisters often do, but they love harder. And unless you’ve been living under Pabbie and Bulda’s rocks for the last nine years, I’m not spoiling anything when I tell you it’s this bold and passionate true love of sisters that saves the day in our story!
The magic of Frozen isn’t just Elsa’s ice powers. The story is about unconditional love, trying our best to do what’s best for those we love, and sometimes failing – and learning from that failure. Loving across differences in personality and perspective. Listening to your heart and intuition. And celebrating the ways in which we are unique, quirky, and maybe a bit of a “Fixer Upper!”
I’m grateful for the chance to tell this story with the phenomenal cast of Frozen Jr. These young people worked hard to step beyond a mere cartoon tale to a fully realized representation of what moves us in life.
Follow magic and seek true love, Whitney Snow
SPECIAL THANK YOU TO:
Grand Rapids Civic Theatre for their generosity in lending Young Actors Theatre the Sven and Olaf costumes.
Christina Marullo of FSU’s Opera Wardrobe Department for helping us with costumes. Emma Stimpson for crocheting the Hygge hats.
