Executive Director Message
It is with great joy that I welcome you to Young Actors Theatre’s 2021 Fall Show, The Wizard of Oz. As you journey through the magical land of Oz, you’ll meet a cast of Munchkins, Poppies, Monkeys, and more – talented children excited to perform for you! Indeed, this is the first production in two years that features our entire Company of one-hundred plus students. When
the stage was dark, our young actors were like Dorothy, dreaming to be “somewhere over the rainbow.”
“There is no place like home,” and for many students, YAT is a second home. That is why we designed our 2021-2022 Season around the theme “Home Again,” with a slate of family-friendly productions: Little Women, Frozen Jr., and The Addams Family to come.
YAT is a family. Once students spread their wings after highschool, they often return to teach, give back, and applaud ... several of
our staff are alumni of the program, including Oz Director Natalie Futrell. I am in awe of the community that my Aunt Tina, our founder, established in 1975. I aim to serve the mission of YAT by cultivating an innovative, inclusive creative space for children to shine.
That is why I am delighted to introduce you to our new Artistic Director, J. Scott Handley. Scott has been a colleague of our beloved Music Director Alison Barrineau Grimes for years, and has played music
in our pit since the mid-1990s. A Tallahassee-native, Scott returns “home again” following an impressive career putting the music in musical theater, most recently as founder and Executive Director of Broadway Method Academy. Scott has already recruited sound and lighting designers from the Broadway community to work on Oz.
Today, we hope you’ll be dazzled by our students, and we invite you to join us on the yellow brick road with the goal of a bright future. We are grateful for the fortitude and friendship of our families, staff, board, and community.

Wizard of Oz Creators
Story by Lyman Frank Baum (1856-1919)
Baum was an amateur newspaperman, publisher, store owner, actor, motion picture producer, and director—but foremost, he was a writer and a dreamer. He is best remembered for his enormous success, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, published in 1900. It remained the bestselling children’s book for two years in a row. Additionally, he wrote 13 Oz sequels, 41 other novels, 83 short stories, more than 200 poems, and at least 42 scripts. He often wrote under pen
names. In 1939, MGM brought Baum’s most recognized book to the big screen with its iconic use of Technicolor. He has become of one the most beloved children’s movies of all time.
Music by Harold Arlen (1905-1986)
Arlen was an American composer of popular music who composed more than 500 songs, many known worldwide. In 1929, Arlen composed his first well- known song, “Get Happy,” with lyrics by Ted Koehler. Throughout the early
and mid-1930s, Arlen and Koehler wrote shows for Harlem’s Cotton Club and Broadway musicals and Hollywood films. Arlen’s second important collaborator was E.Y. Harburg, with whom he composed the score for The Wizard of Oz. His
most famous song, “Over the Rainbow,” was voted the 20th century’s No. 1 song by the Recording Industry Association of America and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Lyrics by E.Y. “Yip” Harburg (1896-1981)
Harburg was an American popular song lyricist and librettist who was
known for the social commentary of his lyrics and his liberal sensibilities. He championed equality for race and gender and union politics. Harburg worked with many well-known composers, including his great friend, Ira Gershwin. “Brother, Can You Spare a Dime” is among his most famous works and was an anthem of The Great Depression. He wrote the lyrics to the standards “April
in Paris” and “It’s Only a Paper Moon,” as well as all of the songs for the film The Wizard of Oz, including “Over the Rainbow,” for which he won an Academy Award.
Background Music by Herbert Stothart (1885-1949)
Stothart was slated for a career as a teacher of history at the University
of Wisconsin–Madison when he became enamoured with music. There, he composed and conducted musicals for the Haresfoot Dramatic Club, which led to further musical studies in Europe, followed by full-time work as a composer for vaudeville and musical theatre. Stothart achieved pop-chart success
with many familiar standards, and he worked with legends like Hammerstein,
Harbach, Youmans, and Gershwin. Then, in 1929, Louis B. Mayer lured Stothart to Hollywood, where he became MGM’s foremost film composer. Most importantly, perhaps, he became the first composer at MGM to win an Academy Award for a musical score for The Wizard of Oz (1939).

Young Actors Theatre Hosts Casting Call for Toto of The Wizard of OZ
On Saturday, October 16, pups from the Tallahassee community put their best paws forward as they auditioned for a chance to play the famed role of “Toto,” in Young Actors Theatre’s November production of The Wizard of Oz!
Sponsored by North Florida Animal
Hospital and PetWants Ft. Walton Beach,
Young Actors Theatre held an open call
to find the perfect pooch to play “Toto.”
Each auditionee showed off their tricks
and bonded with Dorothy, played by Leon
High School’s Ansley Tamplin.
A celebrity panel of judges including the
2021 Tallahassee Magazine Top Pet Alice,
Gio (the arts explorer of COCA), and Justin Edwards, a YAT alum and vet tech manager at NFAH helped choose the best dog to take a bite out of the Wicked Witch.
Bystanders were howling as the talent pool was whittled down during a callback. Round two of the audition consisted of each pup proving that it could obediently sit in Dorothy’s basket as she sang the hit song, “Over The Rainbow.” After much deliberation, a black doodle named Truffles
booked the gig and received an incredible gift basket from PetWants!
