4 Young Actors Theatre
Jessica Cavanagh, Writer & Director
Little Women is one of those books that hits you differently depending on what age you are when you read it. My first time, I was 15, preparing for an audition here at YAT. I was immediately obsessed with Jo. I felt so seen! How were we so alike?! I was convinced it meant I had to play it. Luckily, I did, and it’s still one of my dearest memories of YAT, and of growing up.
When Tina asked me to consider coming to direct this year, I was not
in a good place. I mean, who was? 2021 felt just as bleak as 2020 had. I’d been hibernating for well over a year like so many others, and I felt I’d lost any and all of the hard-won social skills I’d ever had. I wasn’t even sure I cared about theatre anymore, which was pretty stunning considering I’d been planning a move to NYC in 2020 to remount a play I’d poured my heart into for five years. I just...no longer felt that pull.
In our play, Jo says, “knowing what you don’t want is different than knowing what you do want,” and I felt the truth of that. I was lost.
Then, I picked up the novel for the first time in about 20 years and started reading. Then, I watched the movies – all of them. Like, a ridiculous number of times. I couldn’t stop! And I realized why. It was bringing me comfort. Not because it’s a sweet story and I missed my mom (though both of those things are true), but because it’s a real story, and not an easy one.
When I was a kid, I thought the kinship I felt with Jo was something special. As an adult, it’s clear that the magic of her story is its truth, and the fact that most everyone can see themselves in that struggle to find one’s place in the world. To be loved. To be respected. To live with passion. To find a balance between that passion and the relationships you hold dear. Louisa May Alcott based these characters on her real-life sisters and parents, and much of the novel is true – most particularly, the hardest parts.
They lived through what seemed like impossible times...a time very similar to ours. The country was tearing itself apart, and racism was the root of the conflict. Folks wanted to secede. They distrusted the government. Inflation was high and people were poor. War and sickness took hundreds of thousands of Americans – Alcott, herself, nearly died from scarlet fever while serving as a nurse in the Union army.
But this is what hit me, reading the book this time: when she chose to immortalize her family in this story, she decided which parts of her life to keep and which parts to toss. She decided what was worthy of our gaze. She chose to focus on the quiet joys and heartaches; the things that made her feel like a child again. And then, she shared them with us. The wisdom of that has struck me again and again while working on this play.
Life is short and precious. Hold onto the good. Shake off the bad like dust from your feet and tell the story of your life the way you want it to be. Then, work to make it that way, every day. Find joy however you can. Love each other. Forgive.
Thank you, Ms. Alcott, Tina, Sarah, and the funnest dream-cast of actors ever for bringing me back home to myself, and for helping me remember what this life is all about. I can never thank you enough.
Forever your Topsy-turvy Jess

THE INAUGURAL
HONORARY BREAKFAST
YOUNG ACTORS THEATRE HONORS LEADING LADIES OF THE COMMUNITY DURING WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH
On the global stage, the United Nations declared 1975 as International Women’s Year, and here in Tallahassee, it was the time Tina Williams founded Young Actors Theatre (YAT).
Now, nearly 50 years later, we celebrate Women’s History Month and are
in the midst of a “Springtime of Sisterhood” – with students taking on the beloved March sisters of Little Women and the dynamic duo, Anna and Elsa, of Disney’s Frozen Jr. (April 8-16).
In practicing skills at the heart of the performing arts, children use their imaginations to dream without limits. On March 29, 2022, YAT will honor select women who actualize big dreams for our community at the inaugural Leading Ladies Breakfast.
We will shine a spotlight on Leading Ladies who exemplify qualities of the strong female characters we present – resilient and optimistic innovators, collaborators, placemakers.
Follow along on YAT’s digital platforms, as we share the inspiring stories of twelve honorees, and make a call to bolster the next generation of young actors as they learn to stand center stage.
– Sarah Doolin Roy, YAT Executive Director
