Director’s Message
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR / DIRECTOR
J. Scott Handley
Welcome to the final show of Young Actors Theatre’s 2021-2022 “Home
Again” Season, The Addams Family. It has been a pleasure to return to my
hometown this year, not only to be closer to family, but also to invest in
the next generation of talent in our community. Though I moved from the
Northeast, where I established Broadway Method Academy, I have never
been too far from YAT. Since the 1990’s, I’ve played the piano in the pit
alongside my friend, YAT’s beloved Musical Director Alison Grimes. Founded in 1975, YAT stands with a lasting legacy, a tradition of excellence that has deep roots across generations, like a family tree.
The show you are about to see is all about family: “When you’re an Addams, you’re obligated to the clan!” It is my obligation to invest in the talent of tomorrow – our dedicated Young Actors – and identify their unique gifts, as they find their voice and absorb the transferable skills of theater.
This current crop of students is eager to learn, and they are wasting no time making up for stage time they have missed due to COVID. I am proud to see them achieving their performance goals “home again” on Glenview Drive, as well as their dreams on Broadway’s Gershwin Stage (home of Wicked) in New York City – where “Yatties” most recently shined.
With The Addams Family, I hope you’ll be inspired by the cast’s efforts to advance technically, champion each other, and join forces to share a story that will transport and delight audience members this Summer. To describe the experience, I suggest replacing “Addams” with “Yatties” in the opening song lyrics: “When you’re a Yattie, you have a very special duty...It’s family first and family last and family by and by!”
The Addams Family has entertained generations of audiences, so has Young Actors – home again. Enjoy,
J. Scott Handley

YAT STUDENTS SHINE ON BROADWAY AT...

Last month, thirty YAT students took
the Gershwin Stage (home of Wicked) to perform at the benefit concert, Arts for Autism, which combines Broadway Stars with student groups to expand access to the arts for those impacted by Autism. The event raised over $35,000, which will be distributed via a grant program.
Notably, YAT student Emily Weller, who is Autistic, was selected out of two- hundred to sing the finale in a duet with Dear Evan Hansen star Zachary Noah Piser.
Adam Jacobs (Aladdin, The Lion King, Les Misérables) hosted the event, which featured legendary Oscar, Grammy, Tony Award®-winning composer Stephen Schwartz on the keys for musical numbers from The Baker’s Wife and Wicked. Talia Suskauer, the current Elphaba in Wicked, sang “For Good,” with Atypical star Naomi Rubin – an artist on the Autism Spectrum.
To mark Juneteenth, Paradise Square’s Gabrielle McClinton sang “Breathe
Easy.” Additional Broadway artists who participated in Arts for Autism include Kevin Smith Kirkwood (Kinky Boots), Gay Marshall (Jacques Brel), Kelvin Moon Loh (Beetlejuice), Brynn Williams (Spongebob), Natalie Charle Ellis (Beetlejuice), and Marty Thomas (Grammy Award winner, Wicked).
Under the stewardship of an advisory board of artists and activists, the $35,000 garnered at the concert will be distributed in $1,000 to $5,000 grants designed
to expand access to the arts for people impacted by autism.
