Brake teams up with Arval to help companies improve road safety to save lives
Brake, the road safety charity, with the support of vehicle leasing and eet management company Arval, announces training courses throughout the UK to help companies improve the safety of their at-work drivers.
O cial gures show that at least 10 people are killed each week and 100 seriously injured in crashes involving people driving for work [1], however, this is likely to be a substantial underestimate as journey purpose is not always recorded by the police at crash scenes.
Brake’s Pledge training aims to tackle this worrying gure
by providing employers with
the tools to educate at-work drivers on six key areas of road safety. This essential training course o ers practical tools and resources on e ectively engaging sta and managing road risk. The courses will be delivered
by experienced trainer and long-standing Brake supporter Tracey Fuller, from Arval. Tracey is passionate about road safety and will share her experiences of using Brake’s Pledge to
successfully engage Arval sta and customers.
Course attendees will also receive access to Brake’s toolkit of Pledge resources, which includes advice for managers
on delivering and implementing di erent areas of the Pledge, and
also educational tools such as videos and posters on six core principles of safe driving:
• Slow – within speed limits
• Sober – free from alcohol or drugs
• Sharp – not tired, ill or with poor eyesight
• Silent – phone o and out of reach
• Secure – belted up in a safe vehicle
• Sustainable – only when you have to
The course is free to attend for Brake Professional members, and just £90 + VAT for non-
members. All non-members who attend will receive one year’s free Brake Professional membership.
Ellie Pearson, professional engagement manager at Brake, says: “The Pledge provides employers with the training and tools to educate and engage
their sta with essential road safety messages. It’s incredibly versatile and can be used by organisations with existing
road safety programmes as a supplementary resource, or by organisations just beginning their road risk management journey, as the foundation for their programme. We’re really excited to be working with Arval to o er these interactive training courses, and I’d urge any employer with at-work drivers to attend a course.”
Tracey Fuller, customer engagement manager at Arval, says: “We have been working closely with Brake for nearly a decade which has allowed us to support their important agenda as well as providing value for hundreds of our employees and customers. These courses are a vital tool to both educate drivers and positively in uence their behaviour so we are delighted to be involved.”

New Fiat 500 1.2 ‘Eco’ goes on sale in the UK
Following on from the introduction of the New FIAT
500 1.3 MultiJet II turbo diesel, the FIAT 500 range is expanding further with the launch of the 1.2-litre 69hp ‘Eco’ which is equipped with a host of e ciency technologies including a smart alternator, improved underbody aerodynamics and low rolling resistance 15-inch tyres, as well as Start & Stop which is standard across the FIAT 500 range.
As a result of these combined technologies, the o cial CO2
emissions gure for the FIAT 500 1.2 ‘Eco’ is reduced from 110 to just 99g/km which, in turn, cuts the annual road tax bill from £20 to £0 and reduces company car BIK tax liability from 17% to just 14% compared to the standard 1.2 69hp model.
O cial fuel economy gures also improve for the new ‘Eco’ model which can now achieve 58.9 MPG (urban cycle), 70.6 MPG (extra urban cycle) and 65.7 MPG (combined cycle) compared to the standard 1.2 69hp (51.4
/ 65.7 / 60.1 MPG respectively) meaning the FIAT 500 1.2 ‘Eco’ will recoup the £100 price premium in no time at all.
Engineered to comply with
the toughest standards, the FIAT 500 is one of the safest cars
in its segment with larger front brake discs on the 1.2 69hp plus seven airbags (front, window and side airbags, plus a driver’s knee airbag), ABS with electronic brake distribution (EBD), advanced electronic stability control (ESC), anti-slip regulation (ASR), Hill Holder and hydraulic brake assistance (HBA) all as standard.
Available in Pop Star and Lounge trim levels, prices for the FIAT 500 1.2 ‘Eco’ start at just £11,865 OTR with the convertible FIAT 500C 1.2 ‘Eco’ priced from £14,515 OTR (both in Pop Star speci cations). For images and the latest news on the New FIAT 500 and other models in the

BMW 1 Series, 3 Series and X5
BMW 1 Series
With baby BMW coupé and convertible duties now being cared for by the 2 Series, the sole focus of the 1 Series is
in maintaining its position as
the leading sports-focussed premium hatchback on the market. First introduced in 2004, the second generation iteration of the BMW 1 Series arrived in 2011 and aside from its revised styling and upgraded interior, key tweaks were made to the engine range, coming as very welcome news to eet and small business drivers.
The 1 Series remains aesthetically divisive but the 2015 facelift has left it looking unarguably more attractive
than ever with BMW’s hallmark kidney grille having been reshaped, the air intakes enlarged, LED daytime running lights incorporated, the now LED rear light clusters revised, its bodywork minutely ared and
larger exhaust surrounds tted. Accounting for around a fth of BMW sales in the UK, it was a case of “if it ain’t broke, don’t x it” for the German manufacturer.
The trim lineup having been simpli ed through the dropping of ES and Urban choices and various kit made standard
up and down the rungs, it’s
now more straightforward for private and business drivers
to identify a 1 Series matching their requirements and budgets. Typically BMW, the cockpit
is driver-focussed and now features wider use of soft-touch materials, enhancing the already solid feel. Chunky controls
prove logical and ergonomic
to operate and sat nav is now standard on all 1 Series trims, which is a real plus for corporate drivers who frequently travel the country.
Despite having grown slightly, with BMW’s engineers attempting to increase comfort
and practicality, the 1 Series remains primarily a four-seater and although room up front is now generous, some may still nd the rear seats cramped
and somewhat restricted in terms of access. The boot isn’t as commodious or accessible as it is in A Class and A3
rivals, either, but eet and SME customers who typically drive without rear passengers or much luggage shouldn’t have reason to complain. The fairly upright design of the windows and pillars results in excellent visibility, reinforcing the 1 Series’ already highly commendable safety stats.
Small businesses, eets and accountants of today keep a beady eye on CO2 emissions, so although the latest BMW 1 Series drivetrains encompass a healthy range of petrol and diesel units including a 120d xDrive model providing extra reassurance through 4x4 and

a fabulously fast and engaging M135i producing 326bhp,
it’s the new, highly e cient diesel engines that are getting business drivers excited.
Priced from £21,710, there’s a new, three-cylinder diesel model available, dubbed the 116d. The engine comes
from the MINI Cooper D and despite the 116bhp it produces sounding quite pedestrian, healthy torque of 270Nm matched to BMW’s reputation for engaging chassis and decent steering feedback make the most economical 1 Series yet more rewarding to drive than
a VW Golf BlueMotion, for example. The E cientDynamics Plus version of the 116d o ers company and private motorists with the potential for fuel consumption of upto 83.1mpg and, importantly, CO2 emissions as low as 89g/km, meaning
BIK for year one is 16%, rising to 20% in year three. With a P11D of £22,655 for the 116d ED Plus, it makes a very strong business case for itself.
The latest BMW 1 Series hatchback for 2015 has improved nicely in various
ways and although it still lacks the comfort and practicality of rivals, it holds on to its dynamic reign. With standard equipment having been upgraded across the range, business users
and families alike will certainly bene t. The generous range of diesel and petrol powerplants on o er, along with xDrive, means there’s something for everyone, right up to the M135i for entrepreneurs and business drivers with the means.
BMW 3 Series
Around the globe, over
14 million cars from the 3
Series family have been sold and amidst such staggering performance it has perennially become widely regarded as the most successful and desirable compact executive saloon
out there. It’s telling that BMW markets the 3 Series as a ‘luxury company car’ and its area
on the BMW website opens
with lease pricing, highlighting just how important it is in the business sector. However, it now faces sti competition in the form of the Jaguar XE, as well as continually improving generations of Mercedes C Class and Audi A4, along with the Lexus IS and, to an extent, the Volvo S60. With coupé
and convertible models having morphed into the 4 Series, how does the 3 Series now stack
up in light of the F30 generation released in 2012 now having been titivated for 2015/16?
Mirroring the tweaks made to other models in the BMW family, new LED lights now appear at the front and rear of the latest 3 Series, the latter incorporating BMW’s L-shape signature.
The separation between the headlights has been widened
to create a more imposing road presence along with enlarged front air intakes, and new alloy wheels, paint colours and exterior accessories are now available.

relative and whilst the original F30’s interior generally conveyed an air of luxury, BMW needed
to up the ante to keep abreast with, let alone ahead of the competition, hence having introduced high gloss surfaces, chrome accenting and additional soft-touch materials. Ardent 3 Series loyalists will welcome
the minimal enhancements to the interior, which very much retains the usual driver-focussed layout, iDrive system and large colour screen jutting out of the dashboard. A family of four, or indeed four business occupants, will nd the 3 Series comfortable and reasonably spacious,
with only slightly impaired rear head and elbow room plus a narrow-aperture boot posing as minor complaints. Adjusting the passenger seat manually can prove irksome, so upgrading to electric adjustment is strongly advisable. As with the rest of
the BMW range, the new 3 Series for 2015/16 now comes tted with satellite navigation as standard, in addition to DAB, cruise and climate control, automatic lights and windscreen wipers, and Bluetooth.
The BMW 3 Series is available in various trims from SE and Luxury to Sport and M Sport. Petrol variants range from the 318i and 320i with optional 4x4 iDrive, to the more potent 330i and 340i models, whilst diesel o erings commence
with the 316d and 318d and continue through the 320d (again available with xDrive) up to the powerful 335d. BMW also o ers a petrol-electric hybrid 3 Series in the form of the 330e PHEV, emitting just 49g/km CO2
and o ering fuel consumption as high as 134.5mpg - although the realisation is that to achieve this would dictate predominant use of electric-only power, which has its drawbacks due to the limited battery range.
In the small business and corporate eet arena, the
darling of the 3 Series bunch
is the 320d E cientDynamics Plus, combining revered rear- wheel drive performance and agile handling with appealing parsimony thanks to emitting 99g/km CO2, with potential economy of 74.3mpg. Fitted with an 8-speed automatic gearbox, it’s actually greener and cheaper to run than the 316d or 318d and with a P11D of £32,165 attracts 17% BIK, making it a great business choice for high-mileage drivers. A ruthlessly e cient motorway tool with a plentiful 163bhp on tap, the 320d even in ED Plus guise comes alive on twisty country roads, its dynamic setup proving rewarding.
Some may nd the sound
of the diesel engine intrusive
at slow speeds but it soon quietens down once the pace is upped. The gearbox dishes up remarkably smooth changes and the steering and chassis setups feel balanced, but the ride on standard or M Sport suspension is on the rm side, Adaptive suspension highly recommended.
A Gran Turismo model is available for those seeking
a hatchback-like car with an elevated driving position and more space to play with, and the attractively-styled Touring estate fares more or less
identically to the saloon albeit o ering increased luggage space and practicality, both of which are on a par with the 3 Series’ rivals.
The Jaguar XE now gives the BMW 3 Series a real run
for its money in the dynamic stakes, whilst Audi has moved to the front of the pack in terms of interior quality - but the evergreen Bavarian is set to continue its remarkable four- decade record of success.
BMW X5
Having e ectively created the whole sports utility vehicle (SUV) segment when they launched the original X5, BMW’s large
4x4 now has a multitude of extremely credible rivals to jostle with, from the rapid Porsche Cayenne and extremely o - road-capable Range Rover Sport to the Mercedes GLE and, notably, the new Volvo XC90.
Now in its third generation, the BMW X5 is marketed as a sports activity vehicle (SAV) and has taken the moniker to new levels of luxuriousness, safety, technology, practicality and driving prowess. It has grown progressively over the years but despite being larger than ever, its design has matured in a way many feel endows it with a classier image that adeptly balances sporty edginess with newfound discretion.
The muscular yet reserved exterior is partnered by an interior swathed in luxurious, high-grade materials. The X5 may not possess the panache packaged into the gorgeous, ultra-modern and minimalist XC90, but the BMW’s cabin has

Complete with genuinely practical touches such as large door bins and cubbies, and with ample space for ve large adults plus two smaller passengers if the seven- seat upgrade is speci ed, the latest X5 is an excellent choice for families, adventurous types and also business drivers who require a 4x4 for accessing remote roads whilst transporting a variety of equipment or other cargo.
Prospective BMW X5 buyers can choose the optional M Sport pack for even more chiselled styling and sporty driving characteristics, and BMW has introduced a hybrid in the shape of the xDrive 40e
PHEV, emitting a mere 77g/
km CO2. The two available petrol o erings include the 450bhp xDrive 50i and the coveted X5 M, which produces 575bhp courtesy of the 4.4-litre, TwinTurbo V8 at its heart.
The majority of BMW
X5 retail and contract hire customers opt for diesel models, though, powerplants ranging from the £42,590 front- wheel drive X5 sDrive25d SE, through the xDrive30d and xDrive40d to the powerful but therefore thirstier £63,715 X5 M50d which emits 173g/km CO2. For many, the best all- rounder is the X5 xDrive30d
SE, providing punchy yet still relatively e cient performance, but for small businesses and larger eets seeking the most economical option, the 231bhp X5 sDrive25d SE provides perfectly adequate performance and its general weight should
partly compensate for it only being driven by two wheels. With bene t in kind of 25% and CO2 emissions of 139g/km, it statistically betters the Volvo XC90 D5 AWD Momentum, for example.
With a snappy gearbox, enviable cornering ability, a creamy engine despite its 2-litre capacity, alert steering and a chassis setup allowing zestful driving, the latest BMW X5 remains one of the foremost drivers’ choices in the luxury SUV sector. The optional heads-up display in the BMW is particularly useful for business drivers as it displays telephone contact details in a way that minimises driver distraction
and safety risks. As an overall package, the X5 retains its place as a formidable SUV and interest in the retail and lease markets is proving strong, hinting at its longevity.

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV buyers race to beat plug-in car grant deadline
Volkswagen appoint new Head of Fleet Services
Patrick McGillycuddy is to become Head of Group Fleet Services at Volkswagen Group UK, taking over from Steve Catlin who moves to another senior role within the Group in the UK.
McGillycuddy, who will take up his new position on 15 February, joins the Group Fleet Services function from ŠKODA UK, where he has been Head of Fleet for the past two and
a half years. Prior to joining the Volkswagen Group he held roles at Vauxhall, GM and Peter Vardy.
McGillycuddy will report
to Alistair Shields, Group Commercial Services Director for the Volkswagen Group.
In 2015, Volkswagen Group UK sold more than half a million cars for the second consecutive year, above half of which were eet sales.
The announcement that the plug-in car grant will reduce from £5000 to £2500 for plug- in hybrid vehicles bought after
1 March, 2016 has brought a wave of interest in the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV from buyers looking to beat the deadline.
The Government’s plug-in car grant scheme allows for a nine- month delivery period, which was introduced to allow for car companies’ di erent lead times. This means vehicles ordered before the end of February 2016 will still qualify for the full £5000 plug-in car grant, even if they are not delivered and paid for until November 2016.
Toby Marshall, Sales and Marketing Director said: ‘We
are having many more enquires than usual, as buyers are looking to order their Outlander PHEV before the grant reduces. Dealers are reporting a huge increase
in interest and website tra c is higher than ever ’.
The plug-in car grant was established in 2011, and has provided a subsidy (up to a maximum of £5000) towards the purchase price of an ultra-low emission vehicle. Some 50,000 people have already bene ted from the grant. It is now backed by a new £400 million package that aims to treble the number
of ultra-low emission vehicles on Britain’s roads. The grant will now continue until at least the end of March 2018.
The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV still leads the market as the UK’s favourite plug-in vehicle. It has achieved 16,000 sales from launch and currently accounts
for around half of all plug-in car grant applications. The 4x4 SUV combines an all-electric range
of up to 32.5 miles that easily accommodates average daily driving distances, with an e cient 2.0 litre petrol engine to deliver
an anxiety-free combined driving range in excess of 500 miles.

Mitsubishi 4x4 set to help tackle rural crime in South Warwickshire
Warwickshire Police has taken delivery of a new Mitsubishi L200 Series 5, which will be used to tackle rural crime and
to take part in local initiatives across South Warwickshire.
The high performance, all terrain, marked police vehicle, funded by the Police and Crime Commissioner, has the capability to access remote and challenging areas that may have previously been more challenging to reach.
The impact of rural crime on local communities is a serious issue across the UK and a recent rural crime survey estimated
the value to be in excess of £800m. Warwickshire Police
are working hard in partnership with Warwickshire Rural Watch to combat rural crime and has
recently launched the campaign ‘Rural Matters’ to reinforce the police’s commitment to the rural community.
Force Rural Crime Lead, Superintendent Sue Thomas, said: ‘Crime in rural South Warwickshire can range from wildlife crime and poaching,
to theft of farm machinery and equipment. The 4x4 vehicle
will allow us to get to remote crime scenes as well as engage with our rural communities living in areas that are di cult
to access.
‘We are working hard to
ensure that the people of Warwickshire are con dent that we are working hard to prevent rural crime and that if people are a ected, they can report it and appropriate action
can be taken.’ Warwickshire Police and
Crime Commissioner Ron Ball said: ‘The new 4x4 vehicle will be a great assistance for Safer Neighbourhood Teams across the area as they engage with rural communities, so I am pleased to see it now available for use.
‘Ensuring that people in
all areas can have access to policing is a key part of my Police and Crime Plan, as is tackling rural crime. The new 4x4 vehicle will play an invaluable role in increasing the visibility of o cers in rural areas, while also ensuring they can get out into the countryside, including to areas that might have been more di cult to reach with traditional vehicles.’

Government Minister gives backing to CDX16
A government minister has given her backing to the motor industry’s biggest trade event of the year – CDX16.
MP Caroline Dinenage
went on a tour of Car Dealer magazine, which organises the annual conference and expo at Silverstone.
During her visit she heard about the plans for this year’s event on May 24th and is keen to encourage other government ministers to attend.
Last year star names such as racing drivers Ti Needell and Sam Tordo plus TV presenter Mike Brewer rubbed shoulders with more than 1,500 motor trade professionals at the free event.
It promises to be even
bigger and better this year with scores of suppliers from across the automotive retail sector showcasing a dazzling array of products and services and lling the expo with more suppliers in one place than anywhere else in the UK.
Ms Dinenage, the Minister for Equalities and MP for
Gosport, Hampshire, where Car Dealer magazine is based, said: “CDX16 sounds like it will be a remarkable event and one which the motor trade industry will get a lot out of. An event like this encourages growth and increased trade in the industry which I fully support.”
During her visit Ms Dinenage was taken on the tour of the o ce and met some of the team of expert automotive writers, designers and videographers.
Blackball Media, publishers of Car Dealer, employs up to 30 people and works with some
of the biggest names in the
automotive world.
As well as the award-
winning trade magazine it has recently launched new industry title Workshop, as well as fun motoring website SuperUnleaded.com.
The company also has an expanding PR and video department.
James Baggott, founder and Managing Director of Blackball Media, said: “We’re grateful to Caroline Dinenage for taking some time out of her busy schedule to visit our o ces to see what we do. We’ve got big plans for the future, which means even more rapid growth.
“Car Dealer magazine keeps on going from strength to strength, while CDX16 has turned into a must go-to event for anyone associated with the industry. To get her support for what we’re doing is great.”

The new MINI Clubman ALL4 launches
MINI is today launching the
all new MINI Clubman ALL4 –
the brand’s rst all-wheel drive model in the C-segment. This launch marks the MINI brand’s further advance into the premium compact segment and represents the rst ALL4 model to be built at MINI Plant Oxford.
MINI’s ALL4 all-wheel drive system, which has previously only been o ered on MINI Countryman models, has been specially redeveloped to ensure sportier handling and improved versatility to further enhance the everyday practicality of the new MINI Clubman.
MINI Clubman was launched in October 2015 and is notable as MINI’s rst vehicle in the competitive C-segment. Now, the brand is o ering something new to the market in the form of Clubman ALL4. Available with two of the latest MINI engines, the MINI Cooper S Clubman ALL4 and the MINI Cooper SD Clubman ALL4.
The 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine with MINI TwinPower Turbo Technology is the latest example of MINI’s engine
technology. O ering 192 hp, the new MINI Cooper S Clubman ALL4 is combined with a 6-speed manual transmission as standard, and optionally with an 8-speed Steptronic transmission. It achieves fuel consumption
of 40.9 mpg with the manual transmission (44.8mpg for automatic transmission) and has CO2 emissions of 159g/km (146g/km).
The new MINI Cooper SD Clubman ALL4 features a 190 hp diesel engine with 400 NM
of torque which is paired with the brand’s capable 8-speed Steptronic transmission as standard. Fuel consumption on the combined cycle is 58.9mpg with CO2 emissions of 126g/km.
The new MINI Clubman ALL4 includes an exceptionally high speci cation, with the brand’s highly acclaimed Navigation System standard on all models. Furthermore, every MINI Clubman ALL4 also bene ts from the MINI Excitement Package as standard, which features a projection of
the brand logo on to the ground beneath the driver’s side door mirror when the car is opened
and closed, as well as extended interior lighting.
Production of MINI Clubman ALL4 has started at MINI Plant Oxford, with rst deliveries at MINI retailers nationwide in April.
The electronically controlled all-wheel drive system distributes drive torque between the front and rear axles depending on speci c road conditions. This enables faster acceleration and increases agility when taking bends at speed. ALL4 also ensures utmost traction and optimised driving stability in all weather and road conditions.
The latest version of the ALL4 all-wheel drive system has been designed to be compact and light-weight, therefore increasing e ciency. This means there is only a slight increase in fuel consumption and exhaust emissions compared to the respective front-wheel drive models.
The drive power delivered
by the engine via the manual or Steptronic transmission in the form of engine speed and torque is fed to the front axle di erential. An integrated single-stage power take-o bevel gear diverts the power and relays it to a propeller shaft leading to the rear axle. Power transmission to the rear axle di erential is continuously managed via a hang-on clutch.
If necessary, the hang-on clutch can relay torque to the rear wheels within a fraction
of a second by means of an electrohydraulic pump. Fast and precise reactive changes to road conditions are possible because

the all-wheel drive system
is connected to the Driving Dynamics System (DSC) which continuously calculates the ideal power distribution between the front and rear wheels.
Not only are the wheel rotation speeds and the
current longitudinal and lateral acceleration gures taken into account, but so is the road speed, accelerator position, engine torque and steering
angle as well as the Driving Dynamics System (DSC) settings and the optional MINI Driving Modes. Based on this data, MINI Clubman ALL4 calculates the risk of wheel slip and can then anticipate and counteract any loss of traction, oversteer or understeer of the vehicle.
Taking the form of an electronic locking function for
the front axle di erential, the standard Electronic Di erential Lock Control (EDLC) improves traction when accelerating out
of bends by means of selective braking. In DSC O mode, this prevents spinning of the front wheel on the inside of the bend and transmits drive power to the outer front wheel instead. The Performance Control function
is another standard feature that helps enhance agility in the MINI Cooper S Clubman ALL4 and the MINI Cooper SD Clubman ALL4 and works regardless of the DSC mode selected.
Other functions of the driving dynamics system DSC include the anti-lock brake system (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Cornering Brake Control (CBD), the braking and drive-o assistant, the brake dry function and Fading Brake Support.
DTC (Dynamic Traction Control) can also be activated when the vehicle is setting o in loose sand or deep snow.
The latest generation 4-cylinder engines featuring MINI TwinPower Turbo Technology are responsible for distributing the power between the front and rear axle.
Featuring a peak output of 192 hp, the 2.0-litre petrol engine in the new MINI Cooper S Clubman ALL4 is the most powerful engine in the range.
With the standard 6-speed manual transmission, the new MINI Cooper S Clubman ALL4 accelerates in 7.0 seconds from standing to 62mph, while in conjunction with the optional

to 2,000 bar inside the 2.0-litre diesel MINI Cooper SD Clubman ALL4 engine. The new MINI Cooper SD Clubman ALL4 combines the most powerful diesel engine ever installed in a MINI with the brand’s 8-speed Steptronic transmission as standard, achieving superb pulling power as well as exemplary
fuel consumption gures and emissions.

The new Honda Jazz awarded Best in Class Supermini 2015 by Euro NCAP
The all-new Honda Jazz has been awarded with independent safety organisation Euro NCAP’s prestigious Best in Class 2015 award in the supermini category. Earlier in 2015 the Honda Jazz achieved a maximum 5-star safety rating. Jazz took the title from a eld of nine superminis in total.
Each year, Euro NCAP publishes a list of cars that
have performed the best in
their respective categories. To achieve a ‘Best in Class’ award from Euro NCAP, cars from each category are assessed against
a weighted sum of the scores
in each of the four key areas of assesment: Adult Occupant, Child Occupant, Pedestrian and Safety assist. This sum is used as the basis for comparison of the vehicles.
Secretary General, Dr. Michiel van Ratingen of Euro NCAP
commented, “Euro NCAP congratulates Honda for the Jazz, which received the Best in Class of 2015 in the supermini category. The award recognizes the Jazz’s ve star performance and Honda’s safety equipment strategy which make it the top performer in this segment.”
All grades of Jazz are tted with Honda’s City-Brake Active System (CTBA) as standard.
The mid and upper grades of
the Jazz range features Honda’s ‘Advanced Driver Assist System’ (ADAS), a comprehensive suite of active-safety technologies including: Forward Collision Warning, Tra c Sign Recognition System, Intelligent Speed Limiter, Lane Departure Warning and High-beam Support System
Additionally the Jazz features Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure, designed to redirect
collision energy away from the passenger compartment, while minimising the damage caused to other impacted vehicles.
“We are thrilled to have the Jazz named as the Best in Class supermini 2015 by Euro NCAP,” said Honda Motor Europe
senior vice president, Philip Ross. “Honda is committed to providing customers with high quality products that meet the most stringent safety standards in Europe. This commitment
to safety is highlighted by
each Honda model available in Europe – Civic, CR-V, Jazz and the HR-V – achieving the full 5-star rating from Euro NCAP. 2015 was a big year for Honda and we have seen the Jazz and our other new products being embraced and appreciated
by the customers, as well as organisations such as Euro NCAP.”

Volvo Cars launches its new S90 Premium Saloon in Detroit
Volvo Cars has chosen the North American International
Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit to launch its new signature premium saloon, the S90, underscoring
its long-term commitment to the US market and providing a clear sign of its con dence in continued sales growth in the coming year.
Volvo sales in the US increased 24.3 per cent in 2015, with an especially strong performance
at the end of the year with sales rising 87 per cent in October, 90 per cent in November and 89.9 per cent in December, driven by continued strong sales of the XC60 crossover and the new XC90 SUV.
“There are strong indications that Volvo is back on track in the US,” said Lex Kerssemakers, Senior Vice President of the Americas at Volvo Car Group. “We expect this strong sales momentum to continue in 2016, helped by the new S90.”
The launch of the S90 highlights the ambition of the Swedish car maker, following an $11bn investment and the recent breaking of ground in Charleston, South Carolina, where Volvo Cars will build its rst North American production facility, employing around 2,000 workers.
“We have always placed great signi cance on our presence in the US. That is why we decided to present our S90 to the public for the very rst time at the Detroit show, and why we have begun to build a Volvo factory here,” said Håkan Samuelsson, President &
CEO of Volvo Car Group.
The launch of the new S90
forms the second chapter in the complete renewal of Volvo’s product range, which began in 2015 with the new XC90 SUV.
The XC90 received around 88,000 pre-orders in 2015, surpassing the company’s expectations of around 50,000 and providing a strong signal that
coupé, Volvo has taken cues from the success of its XC90 model and raised the bar with some stunning details on the new dashboard and instrument panel, including new air blades that stand vertically on each side of the Sensus user interface.
“We created our new agship saloon, the Volvo S90, as a real game changer. It is classy and

customers appreciate Volvo’s new design, engineering and technological direction.
The S90 has been widely praised since it was revealed to the world’s press in December for its stunning exterior and sumptuous interior. Its proud
yet non-aggressive face, characterised by a concave grille – itself a homage to the Volvo P1800 – is home to Volvo’s new Iron Mark. The T-shaped Thor’s Hammer lights deliver a powerful sense of direction that makes the S90 unmistakable on the road.

cool. The exterior is exceptionally well surfaced, with a fantastic stance and the sort of clean lines that are singularly appropriate
of a Scandinavian design. The interior masters the art of blending innovative technology and
natural materials into an elegant, welcoming and tasteful ambience – Swedishness at its best,” said Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President, Design at Volvo Car Group.
The S90 will be launched with IntelliSafe Assist as standard. This includes Adaptive Cruise Control and Distance Alert, and

the advanced semi-autonomous drive feature, Pilot Assist.
The Pilot Assist functionality gives gentle steering input to keep the car properly aligned within lane markings up to motorway speeds of around 80 mph (130 km/h) and no longer needs to follow another car. Pilot Assist is another step towards
full autonomous drive – a key innovation area for Volvo, and one which is highlighted at the show with the Concept 26 display, which envisions how a car interior could look and feel in a fully
autonomous Volvo.
The S90 comes with a clean
and powerful T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid powertrain, delivering up to 410 hp and literally o ering three di erent car experiences in one – Pure, Hybrid and Power.
The S90 also introduces
a world- rst function to City Safety – large animal detection
– a feature capable of detecting large animals such as large deer, horses or moose/elk, night or day. The technology o ers an intuitive warning and brake support to
help avoid or mitigate collisions with large animals.
The S90 has also bene tted from Volvo Cars’ recent investment in a highly advanced chassis simulator.
“The S90 has taken a big stride forwards in terms of driving dynamics, performance and ride. We have completely redesigned the Volvo driving experience from the ground up to deliver a sense of precision, engaging control and comfort,” said Dr Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President, Research & Development at Volvo Car Group.
Freight industry needs ‘one-stop-shop’ from government – claims FTA
The freight industry needs a single online point where logistics operators can log in to nd all their Government-held transport data, is the view from the FTA.
Responding to the Government’s consultation
on the Motoring Services Strategy - which covers work of DVSA, DVLA and VCA (Vehicle Certi cation Agency), the Freight Transport Association has
called for a ‘One-Stop-Shop’ which integrates digital services andmeets industry needs.
The FTA raised concerns that Government agencies
still fail to consider the needs
of commercial eet operators when designing online systems, and identi ed at least ve di erent points where vehicle operators had to access digital information in order to satisfy the requirements of operator licensing.
James Firth - FTA’s Head of Licensing Policy and Compliance Information said:
”The Government’s consultation bemoans the fact that uptake of online services by industry sectors has been weaker in the past than hoped. FTA members are clear – they want to use online services
to interact with Government, but historically Government Agencies have failed to design systems which meet industry’s needs.”
The Association stated that the Government needs to show how it is going to deliver a
“One Stop Shop” for all online services an operator needs to interact with all the motoring agencies and the O ce of
the Tra c Commissioners. In addition operators who have hundreds or even thousands of vehicles or drivers need to be
able to interact with agencies in bulk instead of using the same one-by-one interfaces designed for the private motorist.
Mr Firth continued: “A freight operator currently needs one login for o-licensing, a second
to view their OCRS score and another to tax their vehicles. They then need to get separate access codes from every driver to see their driving licence information, and yet another code from each driver to see their Driver CPC training. The current systems makes it unnecessarily complicated when it should be so straight forward – it all has to be in one place.”
The 2012 consultation on Motoring Services resulted in the merger of VOSA and DSA to form the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency, so this process has a history of creating substantial change in the sector.

Electric cars achieve ve years’ growth in a single year
Plug-in vehicle registrations reached a record high in 2015 as 28,188 new ultra low emission vehicles (ULEVs) arrived on UK roads – more than the past ve years’ totals rolled into one. The switch to electric power marked a 94% annual rise compared
to the previous year – while the popularity of plug-in vehicles shows no sign of slowing with an even greater selection of ULEVs due to be launched in 2016.
Analysis by government
and motor-industry-backed Go Ultra Low reveals that ULEV registrations for 2015 eclipse the 21,486 total of plug-in vehicles sold between 2010 and 2014. Plug-in power is becoming a mainstream option for drivers alongside petrol and diesel
powered cars as more plug-in vehicles make up the 2.6m new cars registered in 2015.
Fuelling the demand is a greater choice of models, with 30 pure electric or plug-in hybrid cars now available in the UK, ranging from high-performance sports cars to capable family run-arounds, and more are on the way in 2016. Last year, the plug-in hybrid vehicles proved most popular among motorists, with 18,254 registrations,
a 137% increase on 2014.
Fully electric vehicle sales increased 48%, recording 9,934 registrations.
Transport Minister Andrew Jones MP said, “The UK has one of the fastest growing ultra-low emission vehicle markets in the
world and these record gures show more and more people across the country are enjoying the bene ts of this cheap-to-run and green technology.
“British drivers have a wider choice of vehicles than ever before and we have increased our support for plug-in vehicles to £600 million over the next ve years to cut emissions, create jobs and support our cutting- edge industries.”
Head of Go Ultra Low, Poppy Welch, said, “This sustained level of growth represents how plug-in vehicles are becoming the norm for drivers who want to buy a fun, economical, stylish new car. Now, instead of facing high running costs, motorists can reap the rewards of an

economical ultra low emission vehicle, which can save the typical car owner hundreds of pounds every year. With this growth showing no signs of stopping, it’s proof that electric car ownership is the new normal. Now, it’s not a question of will motorists choose electric, but when.”
Local trends
With 9,186 ULEVs registered, the South East of England proved to be the region that saw the most new electric
cars, each enjoying assistance from Government’s Plug-in Car Grant (PiCG). The next biggest regions taking advantage of the contributory funding were the South West ranked second (4,420) and the West Midlands third (3,371).
Every region of the United Kingdom recorded improved year-on-year registrations
for plug-in hybrid cars, while almost all areas of the country experienced growth in pure electric car registrations.
Plug-in bestsellers
As registrations of all fully electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles continue to soar, uptake of particular makes and model of ULEV has also increased among drivers who have made the switch to electric power. The top three bestselling
EVs make up just over a third of all plug-in sales, demonstrating how there is a plug-in vehicle for every occasion. From sports cars to family-orientated SUVs, there are 27 other plug-in cars for drivers to choose from.
The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV rules registrations for the second year running, 118% up on the previous year’s gures. The top three is intact without change as the Nissan LEAF ranks second with a 29% hike in uptake while the BMW i3 continues to enjoy popularity among motorists, coming third once more with registrations 59% up year-on-year.
Future market
Government anticipates that 5% of new car registrations (around 100,000 units) will be ultra low emission by 2020 – an expectation that appears on track in light of recent growth. As more motorists look to manage
running costs, a money-saving end goal could be providing the momentum for the surge in electric vehicle popularity.
Electric cars can be driven
for as little as 2p per mile, compared with 10-12p for a conventionally powered car. Furthering their appeal, the variety of city, family, SUV
and sports cars provides the practicality motorists crave, while some boast hybrid range of up to 700 miles.
Go Ultra Low exists to
help motorists understand
the bene ts, cost savings
and capabilities of the raft of ultra low emission vehicles on the market. The collaborative campaign is the rst of its kind, bringing together a consortium of leading vehicle manufacturers, Government and the Society
of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

SsangYong to the rescue
The Rexton 4x4 was presented recently to the Chalfont Community First Responders to provide a rapid response vehicle that can cope with the hilly geography of the area, especially in winter.
Chalfont Community First Responders are community volunteers who work with the South Central Ambulance Service, part of the NHS, and are trained to use life-saving skills to provide early and often vital intervention for patients su ering life-threatening emergencies. Once an ambulance crew arrives at the scene, the rst responders then work alongside a clinically quali ed practitioner.
Chalfont team member Chris Wright was handed the keys to the new Rexton by SsangYong Motor UK CEO, Paul Williams. Chris said: “We are enormously grateful to SsangYong for
providing us with this brilliant resource. Having 4x4 ability especially in winter is absolutely vital in the rural areas and hills around the Chalfonts and surrounding area - it will keep us on the road. We mostly use our own vehicles but the Rexton will get us to places we may not
otherwise be able to reach.” Added Paul Williams:
“We are delighted to be able to assist in this way, and in situations where every second counts, hope our vehicle helps people get the life-saving treatment they need as rapidly as possible.”

Ford wins police orders for new 2016 vehicles
Police forces nationwide have chosen both the Ford Kuga sport utility vehicle (SUV) and Transit Custom van to renew eets from 2016.
In a total deal comprising 1,100 vehicles, forces across the country have recognised the Kuga’s all-wheel drive capability and versatility of the iconic Ford Transit.
First the UK’s northern consortium of 22 police forces ordered 680 Ford models, including 120 Kuga SUVs and 560 Transit Custom medium vans. Half of the Transit Customs will be supplied by Ford as cell vans, converted by its Special Vehicle Preparation (SVP) operation into a vehicle capable of securely transporting two detainees, accompanied by up to ve police o cers.
Ford Kuga and Transit Custom were also top of the
SUV and van wish list of the country’s southern consortium, which includes six re services as well as 28 police forces. They also added 110 Ford Transit Connect light vans and 30 Ranger pick-ups to the 80 Kugas and 200 Transit Customs which made up their Ford order.
“Ford has a long history
of working with emergency services spanning 50 years,” said Terry Adams, Ford direct sales manager. “The stylish
and capable Ford Kuga has established itself as their
rural beat car of choice with all-important all-wheel drive necessary for winter conditions.”
British Transport Police, South Wales and Dyfed Powys are other forces with Ford Kugas
on their eets. The market- leading Ford Transit Custom is used in every police region in the country, with roles as cell vans,
crime scene units, dog carriers and camera vans.

meet new DEFRA and RSPCA guidelines on in-car kennel size and welfare of dogs in transit.
Broadcaster, Ford driver
and dog owner, James Whale (pictured), visited Ford SVP, in Essex, to see how Mondeos are converted into dog units and to be introduced to the acclaimed new Kuga police SUV and newly nished Ford Focus ST patrol car. The addition of a diesel estate to the Focus ST range last year attracted great interest from the police in its combined performance, fuel economy
and generous load space – prompting SVP’s special build of a one-o demonstrator.

Ford grows mobile servicing of eet vans
Ford’s mobile service programme has extended its reach beyond the M25 following a successful 2015 pilot.
Further enhancing the Transit24 proposition, Ford’s mobile servicing o ers commercial vehicle eet customers the exibility of on- site servicing, maintenance
and warranty repairs on their premises. Mobile technicians will also be able to service non-Ford vehicles making it easier for eet operators running multi-brand eets.
Following the successful pilot last year, Greater London is now completely covered by Trust Ford’s Transit Centres around the orbital motorway and their eight-Ford Transit mobile service vehicles. Fleets elsewhere will be able to call on the service as Ford continues to expand the programme across the country with Think Ford in Farnborough, Hants and Jennings Ford,
County Durham already signed up.
Ford mobile servicing has been designed to ensure minimum eet disruption by reducing vehicle down-time with on-premises maintenance and which also improves service lead times in Transit Centre workshops.
Mobile technicians receive full specialist training and operate from a eet of liveried Ford
Transit vans, with 2.5-tonne jacks and axle stands which allow technicians safe access to the underside for routine jobs such as oil changes. The vehicles are equipped with on- board diagnostic capability and have been tted with specially designed racking by Edstrom which holds all necessary tools and equipment to carry out comprehensive service.
“We are delighted to be extending Ford Mobile Servicing with the opening of another Transit Centre,” said Terry Rayner, Ford Transit Centre director speaking at Trust Ford’s newest commercial vehicle dealership covering East London and Essex. “There is growing national interest in mobile servicing among our UK Transit Centres – many of whom will follow for even greater national coverage through 2016.”
There are 107 Transit Centres, with a further 95 service centres providing cover for the whole of the UK.

Kia joins Go Ultra Low campaign
Kia Motors has added its weight to the UK government and auto industry-backed campaign for ultra low emission vehicles (ULEVS) – Go Ultra Low. As the popularity of alternatively powered cars and vans continues to rise, the Korean manufacturer’s move reinforces the direction of travel for the automotive industry.
The Go Ultra Low campaign exists to highlight the bene ts
of using a plug-in vehicle and encourage consumers and businesses to make the switch to electric.
Transport Minister, Andrew Jones MP said: “The UK has one of the fastest growing ultra low emission vehicle markets in the world and I warmly welcome Kia to the Go Ultra Low campaign. It is another example of leading car and van manufacturers sharing our ambitions for this exciting and increasingly popular technology.
“British drivers have a wider choice of cleaner, greener cars than ever before and we have increased our support for plug- in vehicles to £600 million over the course of this parliament
44 Public Sector Fleet Management
to cut emissions, create jobs and support our cutting-edge industries.”
Since pure electric and plug- in hybrid cars became available as a mainstream choice in 2010, the market has grown rapidly
as choice expanded. Today, there are 30 di erent ultra low emission vehicles on sale o ering a wide variety of model sizes
and performance attributes, from family cars and vans to SUVs and sports cars.
Poppy Welch, Head of Go Ultra Low, said: “Kia is a great addition to the Go Ultra Low campaign, and its Kia Soul EV ts well alongside the wide variety of adaptable and practical plug- in vehicles we represent. The addition of Kia will boost our goal to raise awareness of ultra low emission vehicles, and their cost- e ective bene ts, in addition to broadening choice for motorists. Their inclusion in the campaign shows there really is a plug-in car for everyone.”
The addition of Kia to the Go Ultra Low campaign highlights how ULEVs have become the norm for car buyers, alongside conventionally powered vehicles, such as those with diesel and petrol engines. The in ux of more plug-in models to the market has boosted uptake of ULEVs
in recent years, with more than 26,000 motorists making the
leap to e cient, economical and low-emission vehicles in 2015, more than doubling the size of the market in a single year.
Paul Philpott, President and CEO of Kia Motors UK
and Ireland, said: “Kia Motors recently set out its roadmap for low emission cars so joining the Go Ultra Low campaign was an easy decision for us. The electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle market will grow rapidly in the coming years and we are committed to meeting the increased demand. In addition to our Soul EV, we will be introducing a range of advanced new products and technologies to add to the growing selection
of plug-in cars already available within the Go Ultra Low consortium.”
Electric cars can be driven for as little as 2p per mile, compared with 10-12p for a conventionally powered car, meaning drivers can potentially save around
£800 each year. Added to this, the variety of cars available -
from city runarounds and family hatchbacks to, SUVs and sports cars - an extensive charging network and growing range of plug-in hybrids boasting extensive ranges – some as long as 700 miles, means there is every reason for motorists to go ultra low and opt for an electric car.
Go Ultra Low exists to
help motorists understand
the bene ts, cost savings and capabilities of the raft of ultra low emission vehicles on the market. The collaborative campaign
is the rst of its kind, bringing together a consortium of vehicle manufacturers, Government and the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

Ford conducts industry- rst snow tests of autonomous vehicles – further accelerating development program
Ford is conducting the industry’s rst autonomous vehicle tests in snow-covered environments – a major step in the company’s plan to bring fully autonomous vehicles to millions of customers worldwide.
Unlike other major automakers and technology companies, which have tested autonomous vehicle technology only in dry, mostly sunny climates, Ford knows the future of autonomous driving cannot rely on ideal weather conditions.
“It’s one thing for a car to drive
itself in perfect weather,” said Jim McBride, Ford technical leader for autonomous vehicles. “It’s quite another to do so when the car’s sensors can’t see the road because it’s covered in snow. Weather isn’t perfect, and that’s why we’re testing autonomous vehicles in wintry conditions.”
Ford’s winter weather testing of autonomous vehicles takes place in Michigan, including at Mcity – a 32-acre, full-scale simulated real- world urban environment at the University of Michigan.
Fully autonomous driving can’t
rely on GPS, which is accurate only to several yards – not enough to localize or identify the position of the vehicle. And it’s key that an autonomous vehicle knows its precise location, not just within a city or on a road, but in its actual driving lane – a variation of a few inches makes a big di erence.
LiDAR, on the other hand, is much more accurate than GPS – identifying the vehicle’s lane location right down to the centimeter. LiDAR emits short pulses of laser light to precisely

allow the vehicle to create a real- time, high-de nition 3D image of what’s around it.
In ideal weather, LiDAR is the most e cient means of gathering important information and metadata – underlying information about the data itself – from the surrounding environment, sensing nearby objects and using cues to determine the best driving path. But on snow-covered roads or
in high-density tra c, LiDAR and other sensors such as cameras can’t see the road. This is also the case when the sensor lens is covered by snow, grime or debris.
Undaunted by this challenge, Ford and University of Michigan technologists began collaborating on a solution that would allow an autonomous vehicle to see on a snow-covered road.
How snow autonomy works
To navigate snowy roads,
Ford autonomous vehicles are equipped with high-resolution 3D maps – complete with information about the road and what’s above it, including road markings,
signs, geography, landmarks and topography.
“Maps developed by other companies don’t always work in snow-covered landscapes,” said Ryan Eustice, associate professor at University of Michigan college of engineering. “The maps
we created with Ford contain useful information about the 3D environment around the car, allowing the vehicle to localize even with a blanket of snow covering the ground.”
An autonomous vehicle creates the maps while driving the test environment in favorable weather, with technologies
automatically annotating features like tra c signs, trees and buildings. When the vehicle can’t see the ground, it detects above-ground landmarks to pinpoint itself on the map, and then subsequently uses the map to drive successfully in inclement conditions.
“The vehicle’s normal safety systems, like electronic stability control and traction control, which often are used on slippery winter roads, work in unison with the autonomous driving software,” said McBride. “We eventually want our autonomous vehicles to detect deteriorating conditions, decide whether it’s safe to keep driving, and if so, for how long.”
A pioneer in autonomy
Winter driving still presents
a host of challenges, but Ford’s testing marks an important achievement on the road to autonomous driving. That road goes back roughly a decade, to the rst-generation autonomous vehicle from Ford – a LiDAR- equipped F-250 Super Duty.
In 2013, Ford launched its second-generation autonomous vehicle platform, a Fusion Hybrid sedan using more advanced
LiDAR sensors. This past summer, Ford transitioned its fully autonomous vehicle development program from the research to advanced engineering phase, the second of three phases before entering production.
Earlier this month, Ford announced it is taking the next step – tripling its fully autonomous development eet to 30 vehicles being tested on roads and test tracks in California, Arizona
and Michigan. This makes the company’s fully autonomous vehicle eet the largest of
all automakers. These third- generation autonomous vehicles continue to be based on a Fusion Hybrid sedan now featuring the rst auto-speci c LiDAR sensor capable of handling di erent driving scenarios – thanks in part to its longer range of around 200 meters.
Building on more than a decade of Ford autonomous vehicle research, this advancement is a key element of Ford Smart Mobility – the plan to take Ford to the next level in connectivity, mobility, autonomous vehicles, the customer experience, and data and analytics.
