Ruhehe Primary School / African Design Center

-Architects: African Design Center
-Location: Musanze, Rwanda
-Project team: African Design
Center Mass design group
-Project year: 2018
-Contractor: Ruhehe community

Ruhehe Primary School is a public school that serves 1,120 students from pre-
primary to grade six , with the help of 20 teachers and maintenance staff. the
inaugural cohort of African Design Centre (ADC) fellows led the reconstruction of
Ruhehe as the cornerstone of their design-build curriculum. The redesign of Ruhehe
offers the first proof of concept for design interventions piloted by MASS Design
Group at Mubuga Primary School in 2015. Together, Mubuga and Ruhehe present
new standards in school design throughout Rwanda’s Musanze District.

This project aims to prove that design interventions across a school campus can
improve learner outcomes, increase satisfaction among students and teachers, and
increase student retention rates. Through an extensive Immersion process, ADC
fellows were able to produce a community-centered design concept that emphasizes
capacity building at all project stages. But first the Ruhehe Primary School is a
human-centered project, aiming to improve the quality of life and dignity of the

children and staff who use it daily. 14

They evaluated the environmental conditions and developed a
roof system that maximized daylight and improved acoustic
performance as one of the collaboratively attained solutions.

The lighting depended on sunlight

The material that they use in the project is steel and it
was from recycled source, wood on the ceiling , stone on
the walls and red bricks .

Building Codes and Standards

Building Code

Is a set of rules that specify the standards for constructed
objects such as buildings and nonbuilding structures.
Buildings must conform to the code to obtain planning
permission, usually from a local council. The main
purpose of building codes is to protect public health,
safety and general welfare as they relate to the
construction and occupancy of buildings and structures.

Building Energy Codes

From the U.S. department of energy, this site provides
information about residential and commercial national energy
codes and standers. Check to see if your state requires
compliance with the Model energy code and download free
software to determine whether your new home or addition
meets the requirements of the MEC

Western red cedar, Western Red cedar is mostly used for outdoor
projects such as furniture, decks

Birch

It comes in two varieties: yellow and white. Yellow birch is a pale
yellow-to-white wood with reddish-brown heartwood, whereas
white birch has a whiter color that resembles maple. Both types of
birch have a hardness of 4 on a scale of 1 to 5. Birch is readily
available and less expensive than many other hardwoods.

17

Plastics

Plastics

can be applied to new functional modern furniture design and interior
design, to give the product with new features meaning, the future is
ambitious , which requires multi-disciplinary , multi-disciplinary
collaborative research .
In our real life, plastic furniture , plastic decorative materials and other
plastic products, has been used for many years , but is still stuck in the
traditional sense . Like plastic dining table, chairs, plastic file boxes,
file shelving , plastic storage bins, plastic drawers , plastic windows
plastic trays and doors ,

18

Glass

Glass,

Is an inorganic solid material that is usually transparent or
translucent as well as hard, brittle, and impervious to the
natural elements. Glass has been made into practical and
decorative objects since ancient times, and it is still very

20

Textile

textile

is a flexible material consisting of a network of natural or
artificial fibers (yarn or thread). Yarn is produced by spinning
raw fibers of wool, flax, cotton, hemp, or other materials to
produce long strands. used in carpeting, upholstered
furnishings, window shades, towels, coverings for tables, beds,
and other flat surfaces, and in art.

21

Wall Finishes

Paint

Flat Paint Flat finish is also known as matte finish and has

the least amount of shine. Because it doesn't reflect light, it's
the best choice to hide any imperfections like bumps or small
cracks on walls. so it's not recommended for high traffic areas
like the kitchen or bathroom.

Eggshell Paint You can't really go wrong with eggshell finish

on your walls. Sometimes called satin finish, eggshell has
slightly more luster than a flat finish, but you won't be left
with shiny walls .Eggshell finishes are often used in
bathrooms, kitchens, kids' rooms, and other high-traffic areas.

Semi-Gloss Paint is tougher than eggshell, so it will show

less wear. It reflects even more light when dry, though, so if
there are any imperfections on your walls before you paint,
they'll stand out. Semi-gloss stands up the best to water and
cleaning so it's a good choice for a kids' bedroom or bathroom.

Gloss Paint Reserve gloss paint for window and door trim.

It's also a great choice for furniture,

22

Wall Paper

Wallpaper is a material used in interior decoration to decorate the
interior walls of domestic and public buildings. It is usually sold
in rolls and is applied into a wall using wallpaper paste.
Wallpapers can come plain as "lining paper" (so that it can be
painted or used to help cover uneven surfaces and minor wall
defects thus giving a better surface), textured with a regular
repeating pattern design

23

Gesso

Gesso

Is always intended to be used as a stable ground on which to
paint upon. It’s a special layer in between your support and your
actual painting. It doesn’t matter if you are using acrylics or oil
paints, gesso is considered to be a layer of paint that is friendly
to paint on top of. We can call this layer a ground or a primer.

24

Panels

A wall panel

Is single piece of material, usually flat and cut into a rectangular
shape, that serves as the visible and exposed covering for a wall.
Wall panels are functional as well as decorative, providing
insulation and soundproofing, combined with uniformity of
appearance, along with some measure of durability or ease of
replace ability. While there is no set size limit for a piece of
material fulfilling these functions, the maximum practical size for
wall panels has been suggested to be 24 inches by 8 feet, to allow
for transportation

25

Floor Covering & Finishes

Floor Covering & Finishes

is a term to generically describe any finish material applied over a floor
structure to provide a walking surface. Both terms are used
interchangeably but floor covering refers more to loose-laid materials.

Materials almost always classified as flooring include carpet, laminate, tile and vinyl.

Laminate

is a floor covering that appears similar to hardwood but is made with a
plywood or medium density fiberboard ("MDF") core with a plastic
laminate top layer. Laminate flooring is available in many different
patterns which can resemble different woods or even ceramic tile.
Laminate flooring makes it all possible on a practical budget. Choose
from countless traditional, rustic or modern styles, perfect for any
room in your home.

26

Carpet

A carpet is a textile floor covering typically consisting of an upper
layer of pile attached to a backing, Adding carpet in a bedroom is a
clever choice if you’re looking for an easy and economical way to warm
up your space. You can layer area rugs on top for an extra cozy look.

Another benefit of carpeting is its sound dampening properties. This is
great in both older houses and condos

27

Marble

Every piece of marble is unique and different from all the others. Its look is
closely related to the type of marble, the veining and the coloring as well as
on the quality of the marble and its provenance.

This is a rather interesting and unusual design
which features irregular-shaped marble tiled on
the perimeter around the tub complemented by
wood for the rest of the floor. It’s a way of
delineating the tub area in the case of an open
space bathroom.

28

Ceiling Finishes

The material used for a ceiling should be appropriate
for the room's purpose, and there is no shortage of
ceiling materials to choose from. Some common
choices are drywall, plaster, wood, tile and metal.

Wood :ceilings can add a dramatic accent to a
room, whether it is a simple covering of
tongue-and-groove planks or a series of wood
beams.

Tile :Mineral fiber acoustical ceiling tiles
suspended in a metal frame is the most
popular ceiling treatment for commercial
buildings

Metal :Stamped metal ceilings are highly
decorative and can give a home a historic
look. They were popularized in the United
States shortly after the Civil War, and they
are enjoying a new popularity.
