The Legacy of Raj

In 1939, Raj Group carved its name in stone along the hallways
of yarn spinning and carpet weaving. Today, Raj provides its
clients with complete floor covering solutions that include
carpets, kilims, durries, printed carpets, rugs, bath rugs,
pillows, poufs, wall hangings, storage baskets and floor
cushions. Harnessing its birth from traditional design
techniques, the organization has established its presence in
countries across the globe.

At Raj, tradition is as sacred as creative
application. This is an organization that places
value on its employees, their expertise and
tradition. The organization seeks to learn from
and be inspired by art and crafts from across
the globe. Hence, Raj maintains a constant
encouragement for creative and innovative
ideas to be employed in its existing traditional
and modern techniques of carpet weaving.

Due to its consistent perseverance in fulfilling its client’s needs, Raj Group is recognized today as an
international brand that has skilled employees who work together as one family in the organization’s
vast network of factories and offices. Raj Group has established its factories in the historical city of
Panipat, also known as the ‘City of Weavers’.

The organization not only provides floor furnishings to its clients but also creates an
heirloom in each product. It is this consistency that encases the organization’s vision and
builds its future. From importers in 1991 to acquiring their first retailer in 1996, Raj Group is
now synonymous with innovation and enterprise, the cornerstones of its philosophy.

In 2014 Raj Group completed a momentous 75 years
of weaving traditions. Art, craft, design, tradition,
handiwork and skill are some of the elements that
contribute to the legacy of the company.

Ecolution Staunchly committed towards the cause of environmental
conservation, Raj Group has always laid utmost importance to
inculcating eco-friendly practices. The production of their floor
furnishings is governed by a ‘reuse and recycle’ policy. Recycled
wool, denim, yarn made from rice husk, recycled hosiery fabric,
and PET yarn are used to make carpets, rugs and durries. Their
efforts have been approved and certified according to GRS (Global
Recycling Standards).

Raj Group is also committed to the maintenance and upkeep
of the environment within and around their factories and
they were commissioned in mid-2014 to build a 2nd Fair Trade
facility for their client, West Elm. The facility is powered by solar
energy, functions on water recycling and water harvesting and
is completely LED lit. The foundation stone was laid by Jim Brett,
President, West Elm; Paul Rice, President, Fair Trade; Elizabeth
Thompson, EVP, Williams Sonoma. The facility is a first of its kind,
SA8000 and ISO50001 Certified unit and will be fully functional
by June 2017.

As an extension of their eco-friendly
philosophy Raj Group has also ventured into
Solar and Wind power generation ventures.

In Rajasthan, the group operates two solar
power plants in Rajasthan which feeds in
approximately 4 MW of energy into the local
grid. The group’s wind power generation
projects in Maharashtra generate about 2.5
MW of wind power.

The company has always believed in
nurturing a responsible relationship
with the environment and through this
contribution, they hope to be able to
influence other entrepreneurs to make India
a pollution free nation.

Fair Trade

At the Raj Group, Yati Overseas, one of
the sister units is Fair Trade Certified. A
Fair Trade Certification means that the
consumer pledges to spend an extra
dollar on the purchasing price that
he/she knows will go to the labourer
making the product. Then whether the
amount reaches the labourer in cash
or in kind is entirely dependent on how
the home company facilitates the use of
those funds.

At the Raj Group, the minimum pay
for each employee is higher than the
minimum wage limit of the State, so for
them, having a Fair Trade Certification
did not mean just better wages, it

means initiating various programs
that uplift the livelihood of the
weaver and help create a change in
their quality of life.

Some of various projects funded
through the Fair Trade Program
include, clean drinking water,
medical facilities, basic hygiene and
sanitation for them and their family
members, cycles for transportation,
warm blankets in winter, books
and school bags for their children, a
mid-day snack, lunch coupons and
undergarments to name a few.

Corporate Social Responsibility

At Raj Group, social responsibility has been a part of the organization
since inception. The company has continuously engaged in philanthropic
projects that have contributed to society. From creating employment
opportunities to contributing to the growth of the carpet weaving industry,
Mr. Rajeshwar Nath, the founder of Raj Group and The Raj Charitable Trust,
was a visionary who created the legacy of giving back to the community.
The Trust educates approximately 4000 children across all groups,
including scholarships for promising candidates. The trust also runs health
and medical camps in the city.

Bal Vikas School, is also the vision of the trust. The school is a
noncommercial institution that runs on a“no-profit” principle. It is one
of the many projects run by the trust that contributes immensely to the
community in Panipat. The school also provides educational benefits to the
employee’s children as also job opportunities for their spouses.

To promote the craft of weaving, the Raj Group runs a weaver training
program for individuals who are new to the craft and keen to learn. They are
taught by skilled weavers on the factory looms and once they have learned,
are offered employment within the company. This program is run free of
any charges and without the condition that the individual should thereafter
work with the company.

The company also organizes two tournaments every year, one is the ‘Shri
Rajeshwarnath Memorial Cricket Tournament Cup’ and the other is the
‘Vishwanath Memorial Badminton Tournament’. Employees from all factories are
encouraged to participate in the tournaments that help in team building.
