SUMMER HEAT "The thing with heat is, no matter how cold you are, no matter how much you need warmth, it always, eventually, becomes too much." Victoria Aveyard, Glass Sword (Red Queen, #2) "Every heart sings a song, incomplete, until another heart whispers back." Plato How does heat affect us? Positively or negatively it depends on how we are feeling comfortable or inconvenienced. Summer is the season for heat to come out either with vengeance or with love. This summer we were told that it might reach its highest peak at 60 Celsius, which God forbids. Hopefully not. In the Middle East, if the heat will reach 50 Celsius at noon time, all work had to stop. All workers are given the time to stay in their barracks and wait until the heat will subside to 40 Celsius. From the warring economies, the heat is on. The USA is now trying to act so friendly with its partners for the sake of peace. Likewise, their counterparts try to tell the former that they have some moves to neutralize their defense. It's a cold war but the heat is somewhat boiling. It's a battle of warring words that those economies that are out of words might be lacking in rhetoric. In the areas of romance, when a partner seemingly cannot whisper his/her intention, the other partner seems to fill the gap. This is a process of gapping strategy. In business, it will be similar. Now we have the four steps of gap analysis which you can apply in many areas. First, you need to identify the current situation by defining the priorities. Second, set a SMART goal of where to end up SMART. Third, you have to analyze the gaps from where you are to where you want to be. Fourth, establish a plan to close existing gaps. When reading these gap steps, it seems that it is not clear. We will illustrate one example. A new mechanical engineer who just passed the board exam needs to affiliate with an organization. After searching the internet through Google, he found out that there are two organizations to contend with, e.g., PSME or PSIM. Then he further read about the history of the two societies. The former has been existing for 71 years and counting while the latter is only 3 years and counting. So the gap is about 68 years in all areas. As he continue to read the history, he was disturbed by the officers and members of the latter that most of them came from the former. He asked himself: what were the gaps in this area? Why are these engineers putting up a new organization instead of keeping themselves relevant by helping the former to be more stronger and supportive of the members and the community? All of these questions boil down to one main question. What is the problem? The former's management or the latter's culture? Since this issue had been thrice appeared once in 2007, second in 2016, and third just recently in 2019, the best guess is hungry for power. Anybody who is not willing to accept defeat and who wants to stay relevant (even if he/she is not) will do something just to put his ego on what he/she believes should be. It's proven now that if you stay with your organization and remain there for being loyal regardless of any issues, then you are a heat, relevant, and a hero worth emulating. Therefore, for those members who are still in PSME and who are not switching no matter what, I salute you. You are a mechanical engineer, a loyal member, and a leader worth emulating by members who wish to be one of them. Long live PSME! Continue building the gaps for us members to be identified with the right organization reaching its Diamond Jubilee at 75. Mabuhay ang PSME! How can this be possible? These are all possible when all players require an understanding of the complex interactions between the active variables like building facilities, energy waste, water, and transport, and the environment surrounding them. Our green initiatives matter most because we present exciting opportunities to navigate to a zero carbon footprint, with healthier and sustainable PSME chapters. APRIL 2023 ISSUE 4 Vol. 1 MESSAGE PSME's4thMonthof ItsGreen Initiative "GREEN and SMART PSME is one of the building blocks of a sustainable future, a zero carbon footprint." This month's accomplishments include visiting existing chapters and installing new chapters. PSME San Juanico Chapter. Their 1st Quarter GMM of SJC found solid participation of all chapter former presidents. Its motto is "To Stand United for a Stronger PSME!" I was the keynote speaker and emphasized our Green slogan and our solidarity of being a professional and respected Society. A courtesy visit to the Romblon State University followed by seeing and greeting their president, Dr. Mani together with the PSME Romblon Chapter officers for a possible collaboration on CPM, JPSME, and ME program likewise in the academe and the industry. A plant tour was next conducted at SUWECO-Tablas Energy Corporation considered one of the GREEN initiatives in our country. During the night, a chapter induction was done. The Technical Webinar was also provided by the chapter with their guest of honor, Romblon Mayor Trina Alejandra Firmalo-Fabic. Our heartfelt congratulations to Chapter President Verni Dalisay with his advisers, officers, members, and JPSME RSU. Visit Batac, the Home of Great Leaders was more than a visit but something nostalgic seeing how the town became so aggressively developed with the great leaders that came from the place including the late President Ferdinand Marcos, Sr. The making of the 141st chapter was conducted in Marikina. The newly chartered PSME Marikina City Chapter was led by Charter President Ardel Claridad and his BOTs and members. It happened on April 4, 2023. Although the PSME Negros Occidental Chapter was visited on April 1, 2023, officially, a technical seminar and induction of officers were done. An appreciation by your National President was delivered to the Immediate Past President Boyet (not me) likewise the new officers and BOT. Another highlight in the month of April is the PSME Mandaue Chapter 1st GMM and technical seminar with full support from the chapter's former presidents with the slogan, "Building Strong Leadership, Uniting Mechanical Engineers and Advancing the Mechanical Engineering Profession." It was conducted on March 31, 2023. A day before the Mandaue event, March 30, the PSME CHBE Chapter hosted the 2nd PSME Visayas Golf Tournament at the Mactan Island Gulf Club. It was successfully done with our appreciation went to the CHBE Chapter. With the additional report on the March accomplishment was the World Engineering Day which was not reported in our March NL issue. These events include INHINYERUN, and Tree growing activity. As we continue to strive to make our Society be as strong as ever, our GREEN initiative fills the gaps as we move on with our amazing journey. I called it a 24/7 Green Initiative as though I missed some rest during the weekend with my family sidelined. I felt how lonely to be a National President when your wife is out of sight and your grown children are not there to talk. These are all temporary with eight months more to go. Although we will not finish upon expiration of my leadership because being an immediate former president needs another year to serve before going back as a family man. Mabuhay pa rin ang PSME! My love for PSME does not falter but continuous! LORETO "Kuya Boyet" G. CATALAN 2023 PSME National President

APRIL 2023 ISSUE 4 Vol. 1 MINDANAO NEWS "PROTECT OUR PLANET, PLANT A TREE" - PSME GENSAN CONDUCTED TREE PLANTING The 2023 PSME GREEN Agenda is on the roll and everyone is joining the GREEN revolution! As this year, PSME is aiming to plant at least 10,000 seedlings all throughout the Philippines and its overseas chapters in response to the global environmental issues that we are facing. The PSME General Santos City Chapter in support of this goal conducted its annual tree planting activity last April 19, 2023, at Purok. Maunlad, Brgy. Silway 8, Polomolok, South Cotabato. The said tree planting activity is initiated by the 10,000 Fruit Bearing Trees Committee Chairman under the Environment -friendly Agenda Engr. Alan Rufila together with the presence and support of the 2023 PSME National Executive Vice President Engr. Jeremy T. Aguinea. This activity is not only attended by the PSME General Santos Chapter but was also joined by their valued partners including the AMA Computer College, the Local Government Unit of Polomolok, Barangay Silway 8, MENRO, Boy Scouts of the Philippines - South Cotabato, and NESAPH. It was reported that a total of three hundred (300) seedlings were planted in the location. "Say Green!!!" The PSME General Santos Chapter together with their partners while waiting for the start of their annual tree planting activity. (1) Get your own seedlings! PSME GenSan members grab their seedlings as they are ready to plant (2) "On my first plant" Engr. Allan Rufila, Tree Planting Chairman gave a thumbs-up as he planted his first seedling (3) Members dig a hole for the seedlings to be planted. At around 6:00 in the morning, participants gathered on a covered court near the area. Participants are very excited for the project, some have their gloves on, some have their gardening tools. Every participant have their own tools and indeed are ready for planting. Once they are complete they proceeded into the location. They planted beside a river bank, very strategic to plant a tree during summer season for the soil is not that dry. Each of the participants grab a seedling and together they dig a hole, one plant after another, and hand in hand help each other in planting the seedlings. Engr. Alan Rufila was very happy on the success of the event and he hopes that with the help of all PSME Chapters and of their partners, the target of 10,000 seedlings will be reached. As of to date, the number of trees recorded by the National Secretariat already recorded a total number of 3,000 seedlings and counting since some of the chapters cannot proceed on the conduct of the activity because of the summer season, there is low survival rate for the seedlings due to hot temperature. PSME General Santos Chapter also extended their big thanks to the help and support of their partners. They are looking forward for many more GREEN activities in the future that may benefit not only the members but the entire community Protect our planet. Plant a tree with PSME. A R C H E L L E B . B A C U L I It's an honor to post here a dedicated servant leader who has been with PSME for more than half of her life. A dedicated lady engineer, a wife to a loving husband, and a mother to her disciplined children, a CSuite executive who cares for her people at all costs, a leader who consistently battled PSME's AIPO legacy by all means, a hard-working Trustee whose good intention is to achieve the Society's vision and mission, and an advocate for her company's corporate social responsibility that extended to PSME. I lost some words of praise for this admirable lady, and all I can say is "PSME is very fortunate to have you as a member, a partner, an advocate, and a servant-leader rolled into one." Ever since she started learning from basic education to tertiary level, her academic standards shone as a top ten honors and a Dean's lister respectively. She was then nominated as one of the "Ten Outstanding Students in the Philippines" (TOSP) IN 1994 and got the nod from the UST management as the UST Quezon Leadership Awardee in 1994. Her accolade as a speech champion during her younger years provides her the impetus to share the skill anytime necessary. Her professional experience starting in 1994 from her Family-Run business distinguished her as a technical and management leader and manager that catapulted her to her current C-Suite position, as a CEO and President of a large company, RENCOR Refrigeration Equipment Corporation. She started as a technical coordinator to operations engineer, operations manager, vice president, and the top position. Although it was a Family-Run business, she was trained from rank to CEO for twenty-two years. Her brand of leadership catapulted her to what she is now with a kind of transformation that is flexible to face any challenges, opportunities, and threats and the company's strengths in terms of their vision and mission, core values, cultural beliefs, employee competencies, and the use of latest technology in the refrigeration and air-conditioning industry. A more learned knowledge and outcome-based experience deserves to lead this kind of organization dominated by males, she is CEO/President, Archelle Bea-Baculi. Lady Archelle's PSME stint can be considered a milestone as posted in her current CV. Accolades received for being loyal to PSME are numerous, starting from the first female president of the Mandaluyong Chapter in 2012 until the highest Society's award as "Fellow Awardee" was provided to her five years later. Such fate is very rare from a member to a fellow for a short span of time. PSME acknowledges all her leadership efforts by honoring her seven presidential citations since 2017. These were cited due to her being a national director, national trustee, and national committee chair person since 2012. As representative to the Philippine Technological council, she was elected as PRO, Treasurer, and a member of the AFEO, AER. Who'sWHO- NBOT? Jun's expertise through his presentation of his technical papers was received by any accreditation entities as relevant to the present time due to technological innovation. Seven awards Jun's expertise through his presentation of his technical papers was received by any accreditation entities as relevant to the present time due to technological innovation. Seven awards credited to him such as the best technical papers in Boiler Retrofitting in 2003, The Steam System Optimization in 2016, three years as Outstanding Energy Manager Award from 2013 to 2016, the PhilSuTech Outstanding Member Award in 2018, a 2021 nominee for the Outstanding Professional of the Year by the PRC, and best technical paper award by the PhilSuTech Annual Convention in 2022. Lastly, Jun Turno's half of his life was focused on sugar technology with emphasis on the association of the equipment and machinery particularly the boiler facilities with such specific works as transfer and upgrade of the exhaust steam and vapor condensate recovery system, boiler pump stations, transfer and modification of pressure reducing valve, transfer, and modification of spillover steam system, among others, design and modification of dust collectors, and various design and modifications of boilers facility units, etc. Who'sWHO- NBOT? Nowadays, you cannot find any more engineers who will stick to one company for more than two decades. It is a usual trend for any engineer to explore the company and how it can provide the needs that they deserve to receive. Our "who's who" from our Board of Trustees will provide us with his short story of how his connection with the sugar industry lasted for almost three decades. It was on a Christmas day sometime in 1990 that he started his mechanical engineering career as a technical aide. Although his school background might be competitive with other graduates from other universities, or those who have an edge. The Batangas State University is currently considered as the National Engineering University in the Philippines with its reputation of yearly 100% passing in all areas of engineering. It shows that its students are highly and fully equipped when they started joining any technological companies. His stint with the sugar industry made him more competent in managing the sugar manufacturing operations and maintenance so much so that the machineries associated with it are very familiar to him just like a click of his fingers. Be, it as it may, his technical presentation always get the attention of his audience in any technical forum. That's why his credential shows that numerous awards and plaques were given to him in recognition of his technical acumen in the field of mechanical engineering. Jun as he is well-known to his colleagues by that name, knows that the sugar industry is not what it was some three decades ago. But then, the equipment and machinery associated with it are also used in other manufacturing industries. He readily stuck with it and presto, he survived for twenty-nine years in the industry to be exact! On the sideline, he did his teaching job crisscrossing his famed university with another university in the city of Batangas. His two-year stay with PSME national is the courtesy of his being a top-of-the-line speaker in the boiler course. Most practicing mechanical engineers have the kind of interest to learn more about this subject Jun loves to travel as shown by his true-to-life story. Many of us like to experience the same fate. But Jun is different by traveling twenty times around the globe because of the importance of sugar. In reality, the product is not good for our health if taken more than the required dosage. But on the other hand, without it, some products cannot sellable to the market. So, there is a great balance in the use of the products to its consumers. SIMON P. TURNO III 2023 PSME VP for Technical Affairs
