Baji Rout
•Baji Rout, the youngest martyr of freedom struggle in India,
was born in Nilakanthapur village in Dhenkanal District.
•In his short life, he witnessed the Prajamandal Movement
and the atrocity of British force.
•He was courageous enough at the tender age of 12 to
fearlessly face the bullets of the British force but not to bow
to their diktat. On guard of a country boat on 11th October,
1938, he denied to carry them across the river in boat.
•Baji Rout sacrificed his life for the cause of his motherland.
His death shook the nation and inspired many Indians to join
the freedom struggle.
Jayee Rajguru
•Jaykrushna Mohapatra or Jayee Rajguru, a great freedom
fighter of Odisha was born on 29th October,1739 in
Biraharekrushnapur in Puri District.
• Jayakrushna’s family traditionally served as mentors
(Rajguru) to the King of Khurda. As the regent of the minor
King Mukund Deb-II of Khurda,
Rajguru not only raised a large army of Paikas but also led
them from the front to defend the honour of the
motherland. The fearless patriot preferred defeat to
surrender.
•He was captured by the British and following a fake trial
hanged on 6th December, 1806.
Parbati Giri
•Parbati Giri was born in Sambalpur, Odisha in 1926. At
the age of only 16 she was actively involved in the Quit
India Movement.
•She was imprisoned for two years at Sambalpur Jail for
taking part in the freedom struggle and for invading the
SDO’s office at Bargarh.
•Parbati Giri devoted her life for the welfare of the poor
and the downtrodden in the pre and post-independence
era.
•She is hailed as “Mother Teresa of Western Odisha”. She
breathed her last on 17th August, 1995.
Chakhi Khuntia
•Chandan Hajuri, better known as ChakhiKhuntia. Chakhi
was born to a temple servitor family in Harchandi Sahi of
Puri in year 1827.
•When the burning flames of Sepoy Mutiny had engulfed
the whole country in 1857, among the valiant leaders who
had dedicated their lives for the cause of common man
was ChakhiKhuntia.
•He had thrown his heart and soul into the freedom
struggle on the side of Rani Lakshmibai.
•He breathed his last in 1870 at Puri. He is remembered as
an immortal poet, a national hero, a great patriot and
renowned devotee of Lord Jagannath.
Bakshi Jagabandhu
•Bakshi Jagabandhu Bidyadhar Mohapatra Bhramarbar Ray,
popularly known as Bakshi Jagabandhu, occupies a high
place in the history of freedom movement in Odisha as the
leader of the Paika Rebellion of 1817.
•He was the military commander of the King of Khurda.
•The economic exploitation and administrative vagaries of
the British rulers had forced Jagabandhu to raise armed
rebellion against the British.
•It was the first popular anti-British armed uprising in
Odisha having far reaching effect on the future of colonial
regime in India.
Chakra Bisoi
•Chakra Bisoi was the legendary omnipresent rebel who
seemed to have been seen at most sites of rebellions
against the British rule during the first half of the 19th
century.
•From 1846 to 1856, Chakra Bisoi led the revolt of the hill
tribes against the British which shook the British
Authority in Odisha.
•He not only fought against the British for their
interference in the socio-religious practices of the Kandh
but also for causing undue suffering to them.
•Despite their hot chase, the British were never able to
apprehend this valiant freedom fighter. The sufferings and
sacrifices of Chakra Bisoi has become a saga of patriotism.

Kartar Singh Sarabha
•Kartar Singh Sarabha was an Indian revolutionary from
Ludhiana, Punjab (British India) and was born in a Sikh
family.
•After reaching the United States of America in 1912 for
higher education, he joined the Ghadar Party and actively
participated in party’s activities including the publication
and distribution of the revolutionary newspaper, Ghadar
(literally meaning, revolt) with an aim to mobilize fellow
Indians for an armed revolt against the British rule in India.
•In 1914-15, Kartar Singh Sarabha participated in an armed
rebellion in India, which failed and it was followed by the
arrest and his execution at Lahore in November 1915, when
he was only 19 years old.
Baba Sohan Singh Bhanka
•Baba Sohan Singh Bhakna (22 January 1870- 21
December 1968) was an Indian Revolutionary who
struggled against slavery and injustice.
•He was the founding President of Ghadar Party and
participated in the ‘Ghadar Movement’ of 1915. He
was in jail for a long time during freedom struggle of
India.

•Kali Bai was a native tribal girl of 12 years. She sacrificed her life in
a desperate attempt to save her teacher from the brutal atrocities
of the police force. This earned her the title of 'Veerbala' (Brave
Girl).
•On June 19th, 1947, Watching her teacher being dragged to death,
the young student-Kali Bai, lost her patience and in a bid to save his
life, picked up a sickle and severed the rope with a stroke.
•The police fired at Kali Bai, she fell down on the ground and met a
heroic end.

•Kuyili Pagadai, born in the 18th century at Kudanchavadi,
Sivagangai district was an army commander of Queen Velu
Nachiyar who participated in campaigns against the East
India Company.
•She was a devout commander of Velu Nachiyar and saved
her life on many occasions.
•She is said to have led the unit of women soldiers.
•Kuyili is considered as the first suicide bomber and "first
women martyr" in Indian history.
Subramaniya Siva
•Subramaniya Siva, popularly known as Subramaniya Siva was
born in Batlagundu village, Dindigul district in 1884, was one
of the greatest nationalists, great orator and writer.
•He showed great interest in spirituality and was a Swadesi
enthusiast. He organized a strike in
Coral Mills at Tuticorin alongwith V.O. Chidambaram Pillai.
•He was imprisoned by British rulers over sedition charges.
Subramaniya Siva succumbed to Leprosy and breathed his
last on 23 July 1925.

Captain Lakshmi Sehgal
•Captain Lakshmi Sahgal, born on 24 October, 1914 in
Chennai as Lakshmi Swaminathan, was a revolutionary of
the Indian independence movement, an officer of
the Indian National Army, and the Minister of Women's
Affairs in the Azad Hind Government.
•In 1943 she joined Indian National Army or Azad Hind
Fauj and emerged with a mandate to set up a women’s
regiment, to be called the Rani of Jhansi regiment.
•In 1998, Sahgal was awarded the Padma Vibhushan and
she was bestowed with the honorary
doctorate by University of Calicut in 2010.

Komaram Bheem
•KomramBheem was born at Sankepally village in erstwhile Adilabad
| district on 22 October 1901.
.
•A jagirdar named Siddhiki occupied Bheem’s land. Bheem killed
Siddhiki out of anger and escaped to Assam. He worked as a labourer
in tea plantations for five years, during which periodhe learned to read
and write.
•He was inspired by the agitations and battles for freedom fought by
Alluri Seetha Rama Raju and Birsa Munda.
TheNizam’s government used to collect tax in the name of ‘Bambram’
and Dupapetti for grazing cattle and collecting firewood for cooking.
Bheem opposed these taxes and came up with the slogan‘Jal, Jangal,
Jameen’ (water, forest, land).
•Nearly 12 villages volunteered to fight for their land. Bheem formed a
guerrilla army with the young men of Gond and Koya tribes andtrained
them to fight with weapons. Jodeghat became the hub from where he
started the guerrilla battle. Nizam’s army tried to crush the rebellion.
KomaramBheem died in the battle in Jodeghat forestin 1941.
Raavi Narayana Reddy

•Raavi Narayana Reddy was a freedom fighter, philanthropist,
reformer and parliamentarian was born on June 5, 1908 at
Bollepally in Bhongir, Telangana.
•A member of the Andhra Maha Sabha he proposed
constitutional reforms in 1936. He was a founding member of
the Hyderabad branch of Communist Party of India and
participated in Telangana Liberation Movement against the
Nizam.
•During 1946-1951, Telangana saw peasant guerilla armed
struggle launched under the aegis of the Communist party led
by Raavi Narayana Reddy.
Chakali Ailamma
|
. •Born in 1895, ChakaliAilamma or ChityalaAilamma, was a
revolutionary leader in the Telangana Peasants’ Armed Struggle
during 1946 - 1951.
•Her act of defiance against VisnoorRamachandra Reddy to
cultivate her land, became an inspiration for many during the
rebellion against the feudal lords of Telangana.
•Ailamma is said to have fought vehemently,while one of her sons
was killed in the fighting with Ramachandra Reddy, two other sons
were jailed in Nalgonda, along with her husband.
•Despite multiple attempts by Ramachandra Reddy, Ailamma stood
her ground and fought for her right to land.
•She went on to join the Telangana Armed Rebellion in 1947 against
landlords and the Nizam’s 'Razakars' army, thereby inspiring
thousands of people. She actively championed the cause of the
oppressed, until she breathed her last on 10 Sep 1985.
Makhdum Mohinuddin
•Revolutionary Urdu poet Makhdum Mohinuddin (Abu Sayeed Mohammed
Makhdum Mohinuddin Quadri) was born on February 4, 1908 in a lower
| middleclass family in Medak district of Telangana.
.
•He was deeply disturbed by the Italian fascist invasion of Abyssinia (current
Ethiopia) and wrote his first anti-fascist poem.
•Makhdum joined the Comrades’ Association in 1930’s. After Hitler’s
invasion of the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941, Makhdum resigned from his
post as a lecturer in City College Hyderabad and became a whole timer of
the Communist Party of India (CPI).
•He along with Ravi Narayan Reddy founded the Hyderabad unit of CPI.
Makhdum also joined the trade union movement and was chosen as workers
representative in the dispute of the Vazir Sultan Tobacco Factory in 1941.
•He wrote his famous poem “Telangana” and soon after “Yeh junghaijung-e-
Azadi”. Makhdoom was one of the main leaders of the Great Telangana
Peasant Armed Struggle (1946-1950).
•He wrote many lyrics, poems and songs for the films, stage and drama
including “AapkiYaad Aati Rahi” from the movie “Gaman”.His writings
displayed the ethos of sacrifice, labor, struggle and pain of the common
people.

Munishwar Dutt Upadhyay
•Munishwar Dutt Upadhyay was born on August 03, 1898 in
Lakshmanpur village in Lalganj tehsil of Pratapgarh district of
Uttar Pradesh.
•He was elected twice as a member of the Lok Sabha in 1951
and 1957 and also served as the Revenue Minister under the
Government of Uttar Pradesh.
•He died on 26 June 1983 in Pratapgarh.
Chittu Pandey
•Shri Chittu Pandey was born on 10 may 1895 in Rattuchak
(Vaina) village near Sagarpali station about 6 miles away from
Ballia.
•In 1942 he made significant contributions to Quit India
Movement and became a popular hero.
•Seeing his valor and indomitable courage, great leaders like
Pandit Jawahar lal Nehru and Subhash Chandra Bose described
him as "Sher-e-Ballia".
Raja Jailal Singh
•Raja Jailal Singh was born in 1803 AD at Atrauli district,
Azamgarh.
•On June 30, 1857, 6 miles away from Lucknow, at a place
called Chinhat, he won the first victory by giving a heavy
defeat to the British.
•On October 1, 1859, the punishment of "Hanging was given
to Raja Saheb.
Maulavi Liaquat Ali
•Maulvi Liaquat Ali (1817-1892) was a Muslim religious
leader from Prayagraj.
•He was one of the leaders in the revolt against the British
in 1857.
• He died in captivity at Rangoon jail on 17 May 1892.
Thakur Roshan Singh
•Amar Shaheed Revolutionary Thakur Roshan Singh was born on 22
January 1892 in Nawada village of Shahjahanpur district of Uttar
Pradesh.
• During the non-cooperation movement, the British sentenced Shri
Thakur Roshan Singh two years rigorous imprisonment for his
involvement in the Bareilly firingand became revolutionary.
•During March 1923, he joined the group of revolutionary heroes Ram
Prasad Bismil, SachindraSanyal and Ashfaqullah Khan etc.
•To overcome the financial condition of party, the way of looting
government chest was adopted where ,the first incidence took place in
Bamrauli, a village in Pilibhit district in which MohanlalPehalwan was
killed by Shri Veer Thakur Roshan Singh which became the reason for his
death sentence.
• The hanging could have been converted into imprisonment for life, but
he wanted himself to be hanged so that the freedom struggle would
become more intense. Shri Veer Thakur Roshan Singh bowed to his
dungeon. He took Geeta in hand on 19 December 1927 and walked
towards the gallows house without any hesitation. He kissed the noose
of the gallows, then loudly uttered VandeMataram thrice and while
chanting the Veda Mantra.
Bhagelu Ram Yadav
•Shri Bhagelu Ram yadav was one of May 10 1906 in
Kothilapur Village of Jaunpur District Uttar Pradesh.
After education up to intermediate, he left his studies
and joined the freedom struggle movement.
•He was sentenced to and a half years of rigorous
imprisonment for his involvement in the Kakori
incident.
•Despite this, he did not lose courage and actively
participated in the freedom movement of
independence, strongly opposing the repressive
policies of the British rule.

Bishni Devi
•Smt. Bishni Devi Sah was born on 12 October 1930 in Bageshwar
and studied only till class 4.
•After the death of her husband, Bishni Devi decided to be active in
the freedom movement instead of leading a lonely life and jumped
into the freedom movement .
•During the freedom movement, Bishni Devi Sahwas arrested in
December 1930. She hoisted the tricolor on 23 July 1935 in the
Congress building of Almora, then in Kumaon for Jan Jagran.
• Vijay LaxmiPandit, who arrived here, also praised the active role of
Bishni Devi Sah in the freedom movement, she once again hoisted
the flag in Almoraon 26 January 1940 and also participated in the
Individual Satyagraha of 1940-41.
•On 15 August 1947, when the country was freed from the slavery
of the British, Bishni Devi Sah led a huge procession carried out
with the national flag and the tricolor in Almora.
Kalu Singh Mahar
•Kalu Singh Mahar was born in 1831 in Thyamahra village near Lohaghat
in Chainpawat district.
•Kalu Singh Mahar started the war against the British in his youth. The
first attack was done on the British barracks located in Chandmariof
Lohaghat. Due to the invasion, the British fled from there and for
independence, the barracks of these revolutionaries were set on fire
.
•After the first success, the campaign of Jung-e-Azadi started in the
entire Kali Kumaon to stop the British troops advancing from Nainital
and Almora.
•For independence, the army settled and bigger but the secret hidden
money, weapons and weapons were taken over by the British on the
informer of the local people and started from Kali Kumaon. The result
was that KaluMehra was imprisoned, while his close associates Anand
Singh Faal and Bishan Singh Karaat were shot by the British in Chandmari
of Lohaghat.

Bina Das
•Bina Das, daughter of well known Brahmo Teacher, Beni
Madhab Das was born on 24th August, 1911 at
Krishnanagar, Bengal Province, British India.
•She was student of St Jhons’ Diocesan Girls Higher
Secondary School and Bethun College.
•Bina Das was a member of ‘Chhatri Sangha’, a semi
revolutionary organization for woman in Calcutta.
•On 6th February, 1932 , she attempted to assassinate
Stanley Jackson, the Bengali Governor in the convocation
hall of University of Calcutta. She fired five shots but
failed.
She was sentenced to nine years of rigorous
imprisonment.
Sushil Kumar Dharma
•Sushil Kumar Dhara was a freedom fighter, born on 2nd
March, 1911 at Tikarampur Village, in undivided Medinipur.
•He actively participated in the Quit India Movement and was
one of the leaders of Tamralipta Jatiya Sarkar, which came into
effect on 17th December 1942 during the Quit India
Movement, when a programme of civil disobedience was
launched in India.
•He was arrested several times by the British Indian Police. Sri
Dhara passed away on 28th January, 2011.
Santosh Kumar Mitra
•Santosh Kumar Mitra was an activist of the Indian
independence movement and a martyr.
•He graduated from the University of Calcutta. Later on he
was incarcerated for several years as a political prisoner, for
his participation in his various freedom struggle movements
•.Such a bright and eventful life was wiped out at the
barbaric stroke of a bullet from the British Government
within the prison walls at Hijli Detention Camp on 16th
September 1931.
Nani Gopal Mukhpadhyay
•Nanigopal Mukhopadhyay was the youngest son of Shri Ananda
Chandra Mukhopadhyay and Smt Dakshyani Debi.
He was born at Chinsurah, Hooghly in the last decade of 19 th
century.
•He was arrested in connection with Dalhousie Square Bomb Case.
The judgment was delivered on the case on 27.03.1911 whereby
he was sentenced to 14 years imprisonment and deported to
Andamans.
•After his release he actively participated in the labour movement.
Trilochan Pokhrel
•Trilokchan Pokhrel, popularly known as Gandhi Pokhrel was
a farmer and he often visited Sabarmati Ashram in Gujarat,
Sarvodaya Ashram in Bihar and other places in the country to
meet Gandhi which was evident from his use of charkha and
khadi clothes.
•He was an active face during Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru's visit to
Sikkim in 1957. further, he used the slogan of Vande
Mataram during public gatherings that reflected the spirit of
the freedom fighter in him.
•He also participated in the Bharat ChhoroAndolan in 1942.
In recognisation of his praiseworthy contribution to the
cause o0f democracy the Sikkim State conferred upon late
trilochan Pokhrel, the L.D. Kazi Award for Democratic
Movement on the occassion of State Day 2018.
Khudiram Bose
•Khudiram Bose was born on 3rd December, 1889, in
Midnapore District. He was hanged to death at the age of 18
years, for his role in the ‘Muzzafarpur Conspiracy case’,
making him one of the youngest martyrs of the Indian
Independence movement.
•Khudiram along with Prafulla Chaki attempted to assassinate
a British Judge, Magistrate Douglas Kingsford, by throwing
bombs on the carriage in which he was suspected to be
travelling.
