As we embrace 2024, I extend heartfelt thanks to the ChicagoMSDC Board of Directors, corporate members, and minority businesses for your engagement in 2023. Our Annual Meeting and Holiday Brunch were highlights, showcasing significant achievements in contracts and partnerships. The past year saw increased development training and corporate procurement connections, enhancing our network's capabilities. We actively engaged in communities like South Suburbs, Englewood, Lawndale, and Bronzeville, demonstrating our commitment to inclusive growth. Facing Affirmative Action challenges, ChicagoMSDC played a crucial advocacy role, supported by our corporate and Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) board members in Washington, DC, for “A Day on the Hill” and hosting key local figures like John Roberson, Gilbert Villegas, and Bill Lowry at the MBEIC General Meeting. These efforts helped to influence legislation positively for minority businesses. In light of these developments, I urge support for the Minority Business Enterprise Legal Defense and Education Fund (MBELDEF). Looking forward, 2024 promises more impactful changes with initiatives to ensure our members are ‘contract ready’. Mark your calendars to attend the Chicago Business Opportunity Day on April 16, 2024. The Chicago Business Opportunity Forums will build on the success of the historical Chicago Business Opportunity Fair to become the next highly anticipated series of opportunities to “learn and connect”. 14 ChicagoMSDC is constantly exploring innovative ways to expand and better serve its network. Shyanne Tounsel, who joined the company as a program analyst in July 2023, has been instrumental in establishing new connections through various social media platforms. Her efforts, along with IT support, have helped the company reach a wider audience and stay up to date with the latest trends in digital marketing. She used data analytics based on impressions to gauge ChicagoMSDC’s audience. NAVIGATING SOCIAL MEDIA @CHICAGOMSDC Impressions refer to the number of times a particular advertisement or post is displayed on a user's social media page. They are crucial to providing a basic understanding of how many people are viewing ads in a specific channel. Counting the number of impressions generated by a campaign is also a straightforward way to determine the actual reach of an advertising channel. By knowing the impression count, marketers can generate various other marketing metrics such as the ClickThrough Rate (CTR). These metrics are used to assess the effectiveness of a campaign but requires an accurate impression count to be measured correctly. The use of data has become increasingly important in today's world, especially when it comes to marketing. ChicagoMSDC is one such organization that understands the significance of data in developing effective marketing strategies and generating new content ideas to grow its audience. By leveraging the insights gained from the data, ChicagoMSDC can create content that resonates with its network, keeping them interested and engaged. This, in turn, can help expand ChicagoMSDC’s reach and attract new partners. This can also boost the audience of certified companies, furthering the business relationship between the two. ChicagoMSDC is updating its marketing and communication approaches to stay aligned with the evolving landscape of global communication, ensuring our services remain pertinent and effective in a tech-driven world. Charting a Path from Tech to Empowerment at Chicago Scholars JEFF BECKHAM Beckham's journey to Chicago Scholars was led by his entrepreneurial skills. After years of working in the healthcare field, he started a company called Black Box Creative in 2010 and used his strategy and marketing background in healthcare and digital marketing. His goal was to use his strategies to help Black businesses, so Beckham worked with small, Blackowned businesses, nonprofits, and churches to enhance their digital presence. “As time went on, I wanted to seek out Black and Brown youth who had strong marketing strategies, coders, graphic designers, and game technology, but I had a hard time finding them. I knew it wasn’t from a lack of supply, but a time where they had one skill but not the other,” he said. “I had a conversation with a mentor from the Chicago Urban League who said if Meet Jeffrey Beckham: Healthcare IT expert turned corporate entrepreneur, now leading Chicago Scholars as CEO. They either live in Chicago or come to Chicago for school and live out their dreams of attending college. I applied, and after a national search and six months, I became the CEO in April 2021.” This is Beckham’s second time as a keynote speaker at the Chicago MSDC Dolores Saxton-Walker Scholarship Reception. He added that his keynote is a continuing theme on creating and acknowledging the goals and opportunities you have as a young person. “It’s about polishing up your skills that will get you further in life. I did a lot to chase my dollars and dreams. I was a first-generation student growing up, so I knew I had to establish skills in order to survive,” he said. "The minute I chose to run towards a purpose, things got better for me. I used to run away from leadership and development, but it changed. When I ran to those purposes, doors began to open." This year’s speech will alert the students that their time is now to achieve their purposes and goals. “I think that when you’re young and you think you're not ready, but what I've seen with the youth and with Chicago Scholars is, they are ready. They are ready to use their voices and make an impact, knowing what they expect from us to support and lead them to a positive effect. FEATURE STORY NMSDC Affiliate Council Presidents and Stakeholders Unite for Urgent Congressional Action

"In light of the recent Supreme Court decision and the surge of lawsuits challenging minority business programs, we initiated a grassroots campaign effort to ensure our voices were heard," stated Sharon R. Pinder, President/CEO of the Capital Region Minority Supplier Development Council and leader of the Affiliate Council’s Legislative Advocacy. "Our journey began in our local districts this summer, and the Day on Capitol Hill reinforced the urgency of our cause." The recent Supreme Court decision regarding affirmative action in higher education has sparked a concerning surge of attacks on minority business programs at the local, state, and federal levels. Notably, the court case (Ultima v. U.S. Department of Agriculture) in the Eastern District of Tennessee Court led to the suspension of the race-conscious "rebuttable presumption" for the 8(a) program nationwide, effectively eradicating race as a basis of disadvantaged in 8(a) set-asides. In a resounding call to action, nearly 70 individuals, representing the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC) network, including regional affiliate council presidents, minority business enterprises, and major corporations, came together in the nation's capital after the NMSDC National Conference in Baltimore, MD. These leaders, dedicated to advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in business, held discussions with 60 congressional members to address pressing issues impacting minority-owned businesses nationwide. 22 CONNECTIONS Various council representatives and MBEs on Capitol Hill. Furthermore, activists and 13 state attorneys general have cautioned CEOs of the largest U.S. Fortune 100 companies about potential litigation related to their corporate DEI practices and supplier diversity programs. among public and private sector contracting officers, causing a detrimental impact on minority-owned businesses. While the full extent of this impact is yet to be fully assessed, it is evident that immediate action is required. The regional affiliate council presidents assert that Congress must now take responsibility. Courts have made it clear that Congress must establish a "compelling government interest" in addressing the "discriminatory barriers that racial minorities and women face, hindering their participation in government contracting." 23 CONNECTIONS MBEs: Quentella Enty, B.I.G., Inc. and Charles Harrell, II, The IT Architect Corp. The Group’s three-pronged strategy and messages included: Educate Congress on Affirmative Action Concerns: The growing number of lawsuits nationwide, notably in Texas, obstructing local U.S. Department of Commerce Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) offices and affecting organizations like the Fearless Fund, calls for urgent attention. Highlight Economic Impact: Recognizing the substantial economic impact minority businesses have in their respective regions and across the country is crucial. The 23 regional affiliates of the NMSDC, with 16,000 certified minority-owned businesses, 1,500 corporations, $482.1 billion in minority spending, $136.4 billion in total wages, and 1.8 million jobs, play a pivotal role in driving growth and promoting innovation. Collect and Share Data: The Regional Affiliate Councils urged Congressional Members to collect data points from businesses in their districts and bring these findings to Washington for formal Congressional Record placement, fostering understanding and action. In addition to the meetings that have taken place nationwide, on that day the group had informational sessions with presentations by Ying McGuire, CEO and President of NMSDC, Nigel Stephens, Principal, Phoenix Strategies, Inc., and key figures, including Stephen Benjamin, Director of the Office of Public Engagement, Diedre Henry Spires, Special Advisor to the Small Business Administration (SBA) Administrator, Congressman Glenn Ivey, Sarah von der Lippe, Pro Bono Attorney for the Minority Business Enterprise Legal Defense and Education Fund, Dr. Winslow Sargeant, former Chief Advocacy Officer at the SBA, and policy panels representing the House and Senate Small Business Committees.

Key corporate leaders provided insights on MBE development trends, while breakout sessions equipped businesses with tools to advance in the economy. Topics like access to capital, DEI challenges, and the Emerging Young Entrepreneurs Pitch Competition were highlights, underscoring the collective effort to build a resilient, inclusive economy. Looking ahead, the next NMSDC Conference is set for October 2024 in Atlanta, promising to continue this vital dialogue and action. What gets measured, gets done. How are Business Diversity and Sustainability outcomes and successes measured in your organization? Is your organization focused on achieving a spend goal, or has your organization modernized targeted outcomes to measure your role in creating sustainable jobs and wages in the community? Ensure you are driving strategic direction AND CLARITY to achieve the outcome you want to achieve versus assuming your teams can “read your minds.” Building the next generation of entrepreneurs is top of mind. Advocacy group partners, students and educators shared how collegiate accelerator programs at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU’s) can be leveraged to build tomorrow’s entrepreneurs. Seek out opportunities to launch a program at a college in your area or get engaged. Consider how you and your organizations can help students gain critical skills and the expertise needed to create a solid foundation for their emerging businesses. As a partnering organization, ChicagoMSDC was invited to participate in Allstate’s annual event. Over the course of the week, fifteen hundred registrants from around the world received the opportunity to attend twenty sessions, led by seventy internal and external Business Diversity and Sustainability exemplars. This event would not have been a success without the continued commitment to accelerating economic impact and sustainable procurement practices through proactive, inclusive, and sustainable supply chain practices. A few highlights and take-aways from the event: Courageous Leadership is a critical leadership attribute needed to Drive and Sustain change. Allstate believes everyone has the opportunity to lead change, be courageous, speak up and to TAKE ACTION. As you plan for 2024, what can you do to drive positive economic impact in communities where you work, serve and live? What can your company do to drive change? Who else can you engage on this journey (i.e., peers, suppliers)? Create a plan to execute answers to these questions and start driving outcomes TODAY. Critical Thinking and Accountability are skills we all need to change the trajectory of Business Diversity and Sustainability. Several speakers shared benchmarked best practices; Ask yourself, where can you and your company improve? How can “out of box thinking” be incorporated into your business diversity and sustainability processes? How can we hold each other accountable in driving outcomes? 28 CONNECTIONS
