As Autumn arrives, we reflect on a Summer filled with business interactions, challenges, and transformations within the NMSDC network. Change is our constant companion, propelling us forward into an exciting future. We extend heartfelt thanks to our corporate members for championing business diversity strategies, and to our minority-owned businesses for their adaptability and commitment to competitiveness. In this issue, we revisit our third-quarter highlights. Chase Bank shared insights on becoming 'contract ready,' PIPE's 7th cohort kicked off with mentors, and the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago hosted 'Business Smart Week.' In August, our Business Diversity Mastermind featured CPOs from ComEd and BMO, creating an engaging exchange of ideas. Our Jim Osborne Scholarship Classic brought together over 200 participants, despite the rain. The Programs team ventured into the South Suburbs, providing technical assistance and grant opportunities. They introduced an exciting webinar series with EX3 Labs, and our Missouri MBDA Business Center celebrated another successful year and partnered with the Information Technology Senior Management Forum. Collaborative opportunities continue to grow in the fourth-quarter with co-hosted events. Join us on December 1 at Willis Tower for our Annual Meeting and Holiday Brunch. Thank you for your support and here's to forging more “Quality Connections” ahead. CONNECTIONS FROM THE PRESIDENT MESSAGE 04 President/CEO

The Cook County Small Business Source introduced the Source Grant in July, offering a remarkable opportunity for businesses to access much-needed funding for their postpandemic recovery efforts. With an overwhelming response, the grant received 16,626 applications during the submission period, which concluded on August 25. Currently, the grant is in the meticulous application review process, slated to disburse funds in Q1 of 2024. This initiative focuses on providing a substantial financial boost of $40 million to small businesses that have demonstrated resilience between 2019 and 2023. Importantly, this support comes without the burden of repayment. Beyond financial aid, the Source Grant offers valuable no-cost advising and coaching sessions. These sessions will help stabilize businesses and equip them with the necessary tools for long-term success. The Small Business Source Grant prioritizes businesses in Cook County, with a particular emphasis on industries such as arts/entertainment, hospitality, food and tourism, retail trade, and transportation/warehousing. Additionally, ChicagoMSDC offered virtual and in-person help sessions, led by Neda Sharp, the Director of Program Development, to address any queries and assist with the application process. ChicagoMSDC team members, including Neda Sharp and Shyanne Tounsel, Program Analyst, conducted outreach efforts in South Suburban communities like Hazel Crest, Markham, and Matteson, informing nineteen small businesses about the grant. Anita Hagan, Associate Director of MBE Services and Programs, extended efforts to the West Side of Chicago, including areas like Austin and North Lawndale. Shyanne Tounsel also leveraged social media, reaching 2,943 people on Facebook and 1,712 on LinkedIn, with the grant promotion. FEATURE STORY Journey from Chicago's Austin Neighborhood to Yale University Amidst the End of Affirmative Action Caleb Dunson

Caleb Dunson, a Chicagoan, has made waves as a journalist and political columnist, with articles featured in renowned publications like the New York Times. However, what many may not realize is that he is pursuing his senior year at Yale University, majoring in Political Science and Economics. At just 21 years old, Dunson humorously considers himself an "old man" as he reflects on the recent overturning of race-based affirmative action rights by the U.S. Supreme Court. This decision, which includes institutions like Yale, sent shockwaves through the academic world, leaving many 2023 high school graduates, particularly those from Black and Brown communities, uncertain about their place in prestigious colleges. Dunson, currently an Opinion Columnist for Yale Daily News, eloquently captured his thoughts on this decision in an article that garnered praise from the ChicagoMSDC. He also received a scholarship from ChicagoMSDC. His article expressed his shock at the Supreme Court's decision and his determination to write about it. While reflecting on his journey from accepting an offer at Princeton to his ultimate acceptance at Yale, Dunson highlighted the significance of these moments for him and his community. He shared heartwarming encounters with strangers who expressed pride and support for his achievements. Throughout his three years at Yale, Dunson has found a supportive community despite the relatively small population of Black and Brown students. He believes that, in the wake of the end of Affirmative Action, opportunities for students like him to attend top colleges based solely on academic merit may dwindle, making it even harder for future generations to follow in his footsteps. In Dunson's eyes, this shift challenges the promise of American prosperity and undermines the faith that communities like his have in providing opportunities for success. He hopes that, despite these challenges, future generations will continue to pursue their dreams and inspire pride in their neighborhoods. Caleb’s journey serves as a testament to resilience and determination, offering a perspective on the evolving landscape of educational opportunities for minority students. 15 CONNECTIONS

Notably, we were pleased to welcome our new corporate members, including Mercer, Cubs, and American Water, to this engaging forum. Additionally, we extended invitations to approximately seven MBEs, who had the opportunity to showcase their expertise during the afternoon sessions.
