DAVE DEACON
CORNISH SOCCER
Welcome again to another issue of CORNISH SOCCER, but instead of a pre-Easter edition when one
is normally looking forward to a bonanza of local football with a mixture of local derbies and cup finals,
in place of that, it’s an issue coming to you confirming that the FA have declared the season over!
We were all anticipating an exciting packed end of season run-in for a number of the leagues.
Just to mention a couple, would it be Helston or Saltash in the Peninsula Premier West while St Ives
had caught up ground in the St Piran West sufficient enough to make some think the silverware wasn’t
quite ready to go in the direction of Penryn’s Kernick Road.
Alas it isn’t to be after the FA’s prompt decision was last week ratified by the FA Council!
Whether is it correct or not, well we all have opinions on the matter don’t we! Some of those opinions
will be tinted with where a team was standing in the respective league table, some tinted with the
amount of money spent for basically now nothing and let’s not also ask what the struggling against
relegation clubs must be feeling? Relieved for sure, but whether they should have escaped going down
or not is another matter!
The points per game argument didn’t feel right to me, however I also think the FA came to a decision
too early. There’s no real winner out of this, that is apart from hoping that we all stay safe and come
the new season, we can discuss “what if” over a pint, face to face instead of online!
With the season over and before the records might well disappear, this issue includes the “final tables”
along with the goalscorers for our Saturday leagues.
In the meantime, with this publication still the only magazine covering football from throughout the
county, all being well, I shall be aiming to to include articles and features on some of our clubs and
characters in the next issue.

FA COUNCIL CONFIRM
“NULL & VOID”
On the 9th April the FA Council ratified the decision to make the non-
league season 2019-20 “null & void” for Steps 3-7.
The decision also applied to tiers 3-7 of the women's pyramid.
So the season has been 'expunged', despite over 150 clubs and a small
handful of Members of Parliament expressing their opposition.
From the FA:- On the “Points Per Match vs expunging results” debate,
this is what the FA’s Head of the National League
“Since the outbreak of the System Laurence Jones had to say :
COVID-19 pandemic, we have
been working collaboratively “I understand that this decision has inevitably caused some
with the leagues within the clubs, players and supporters to feel a sense of injustice and

of ratifying the decision.” Model. The PPM model also doesn’t address the issue of how
to deal with play-off matches and how to identify a winner who would consequently benefit from promotion.
In addition, most of the clubs facing relegation will be of the view that they stood a chance of avoiding it
due to the number of games remaining in the season and they may consider it to be unfair for them to be
denied the opportunity to secure safety through sporting merit.
It is impossible to find a solution that works for everybody, so the decision was based on two main factors.
Firstly, the potential financial impact on clubs during this uncertain period, and secondly, the fairest
method on how to decide the sporting outcomes for the season, with the integrity of the leagues in mind.
Some have referenced the fact the PPM model has been used to determine promotion and relegation in
the past, which is correct, but only in cases where clubs are compared across different leagues, with the
season having been completed and all clubs having played their fixtures.”

TRURO CITY
2019-20
FROM CAMERON WELDON
An avid Truro City fan, studying
journalism at Falmouth Uni and now
deeply involved at the club with Match
programme material and so who better
is there to keep CORNISH SOCCER
readers informed as the season unfolds
2019/20 COMES TO A
DISAPPOINTING EARLY
END!
This certainly wasn’t what I’d be expecting to write at the end of March,
but Truro City’s 2019/20 campaign is now over, two months before it
should have been.!
With the sudden outbreak of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) the FA decided to end the season early for
teams in Step 3 and below and declare it ‘Null and Void’,
which hasn’t gone down well in the Non-League world.
The month began as you would have expected, same as
normal for Truro and they kicked off with a massive
promotion battle with playoff hopefuls Taunton Town. With
Will Swan returning to parent club Nottingham Forrest, City
were short of a striker and looked to the Championship club
again for a young forward. U-23s forward Kieran Hayes
(pictured right) arrived at Treyew Road looking to follow in
Swan’s footsteps and went straight into the starting eleven
against the Somerset side. Former White Tigers favourite
Shane White put Taunton into a half time lead as he headed
home a Ryan Brett free kick midway through the opening
period. Truro came out a much stronger side in the second
Page 6 CORNISH SOCCER………………the voice of football in the Duchy
half and soon equalised. Top goal scorer
Tyler Harvey managed to get his toe on the
end of a cross to level the scores and earn
City a deserved draw putting the White
Tigers a point clear at the top of the pile with
two games in hand on second placed
Chesham United.
Then that was that for football as the
Southern League came to a decision to
suspend the league for a week due to the
Coronavirus, meaning Truro’s fixtures
against Salisbury, Yate Town and Merthyr
Town were all postponed. A week later the
Southern League then announced that
there would be no more games until April
3rd.
In some more positive news, Louis Rooney
(above right) is now on the road to recovery after the striker had a successful surgery following his
ACL injury that saw him miss a huge chunk of the campaign.
Then on the 26th of the month the FA announced that the season would be declared null and void
for all Non-League leagues from Step 3 and below, which has caused an uproar of frustrations from
clubs across the land. Truro City Football
Club along with 65 other clubs teamed up
and sent a letter to the Football Association
asking them to reconsider their decision,
believing the season should be on a points
per game basics rather to the null and void
and waste all the funds and time teams
have put in across the year.
Truro manager Paul Wotton (left), speaking
to the club’s website thanked the supporters
for all their support but revealed he was
devastated for his players.
“Everyone is clearly disappointed none
more so than myself and the players but
from all the staff and everyone at Truro City
thank you to the supporters and volunteers
for your excellent support across the whole
campaign.
“I’m devastated for the players who’ve
worked so hard all season. I’m also
devastated for the supporters, but in this troubled time it’s important as Truro City Football Club we
all stick together. For everyone, the players, the staff and of course our supporters.”
“You’ve all been amazing, and I can’t thank you enough for all your support both home and away.
“As disappointed as we are it’s a time where football isn’t necessarily the main focus and we all
need to stay calm. We’ll make sure we’re all ready to go again next season.”

ANY EMBARRASSING MOMENTS
WHILE REFEREEING : Lining at
Falmouth Town in a floodlit game,
cannot remember who was in the
middle. It was a very big crowd that
evening. I was on the stand side. It was
nearly full. The referee had given the
two of us flags that were very big and
long, I flagged for an offside not
knowing that I had trod on the flag as it
was that long and as I tried to raise it, I
fell over. You can imagine the delight of
the spectators all around the ground!
ANYTHING YOU WOULD LIKE TO
CHANGE IN LOCAL FOOTBALL :
This is a very difficult question, during
my years I have been privileged to
meet so many players, managers,
league and county officials. They all
have one thing in common, their love of
football.
One club men who have tried so hard
to keep their clubs going with very little
support from the Football Association
at times, I have changed for a match in
swish changing rooms, some even with
heated floors, and I have changed by
the side of a pitch at times also. All part
of our love for the game. I would like to
see more immediate emergency
financial support to all our Cornish
Leagues from the FA. Last season I did
a game at Constantine (love their
sloping pitch), during the week a pipe
had burst and it flooded the changing
rooms - brought down ceilings, flooded
the refs room, the repair costs were
around £800 which neither they or the
local council could raise. I know the FA
have a grant system, but it is not
publicised enough in my opinion.
That's my rant over.
One final rant though - I just wish some
more of our young people would take
up the whistle, we are so desperately
short as is well known.

PENRYN BLOWN OFF THE
SALTINGS…
THE ALTERNATE
VIEW…
Another article from Pete
Ray, better known for his
blog series as The Mowdog
On the Road.
The Saltings ground was
certainly beset by a strong wind,
blowing from the railway carpark end of the pitch straight into
the undulating end, which looked rather like a hill and valley
landscape for a model village. Birds massed on the mud-
swathed estuary beyond the train line and regular pairs of
carriages clattered to and from St Ives through Lelant’s vacant platforms.
The wooden enclosure for the St Ives fans to crowd into, faced away from the trains, as if built
the wrong way round, but it was like the incumbents were attempting to create a world record,
a similar thing to getting as many folks as possible inside a Mini Clubman. The shelter reminded
me of a railway goods wagon from the 1950s but it was as splendid as it was unique. In the
current climate though, the virus Covid-19 would find a group of humans packed together like
that a real temptation…
The top two teams in the St Piran League were forced by the weather conditions to perform in
a more workmanlike than cavalier fashion during the contest and so it was fitting that various
professions were represented on the team sheets. There was a
Tanner, a Turner, a Spurrier (spur maker), a Reeve and even a
Leivers. The home team were the Saints, there was even a Lord and
a Pope on the Penryn list, plus a Day and a month (May) and
because of the county the game was being played in, there was even
a Cornish. He was a substitute though and only appeared dreckly…
Ah, the team sheets… Penryn’s players wore numbers which includ-
ed 12, 14, 15 and 17 as starters, with 4, 5 and 9 on the bench. St
Ives had written their numbers from 1-11 with corresponding names,
except that their starting XI included a 12, a 14 and a 17, to my
dismay.

Worse still for the commentator, I had spoken to Josh
Magin of Saints before the game and he was down as
number 9 on the team list, but when the match began
he was wearing, er, the number 7 shirt… Thus I real-
ised that St Ives were not wearing the numbered shirts
suggested by the team-sheet and that my first period
commentary was, er, buggered. Kindly though,
Stephen, who had written out the original list, made a
separate list of identities for me before the interval,
in-between retrieving balls from ditches, bushes and
trees. He said that the players had simply picked up
any shirt and that the referee had been happy with
that… Hmm…
Lord, the Penryn ‘keeper miscued an early clearance against the gale and St Ives’ spur maker
smacked the loose ball into the net, although Magin might possibly have been in the goalie’s eye-line
and slightly offside… The Penryn town official, Reeve, equalised for Athletic but Saint Clymo moved
forth onto a pass by Spencer-Smith to run the ball past an undemonstrative Lord to complete the
scoring before the half-time break for pasties and Sharp’s Coconut Stout.
The famous and well disguised Mark ‘Rappo’ Rapsey was present to watch his son Jack rap the home
crossbar on one occasion but in truth, Penryn were abject and failed to trouble home gloveman
Harding at all, despite having the benefit of a strong wind in their favour after the recess. The excellent
Day rallied his Saints against that wind, taking several strong goal-kicks himself, whilst Magin looked
the most competent and creative forward on view.
And thus the Saints defeated a team inspired by the presence of a Lord and a Pope.
No mean feat at the Saltings…
