FROM

DAVE DEACON

CORNISH SOCCER

Welcome to the first issue of CORNISH SOCCER for 2018.

On the pitch it’s been a pretty quiet start to the New Year as all the rain has had a tremendous impact
on games being called off because of waterlogged venues.

That’s why I took the opportunity to take in the recent Friday Helston v Argyle SWPL match as the
forecast for the following day was heavy rain, and make no mistake it turned out to be heavy, heavy
rain!

While Friday evening was relatively pleasant conditions for watching, the next day couldn’t have been
so different with constant incessant rain supported by a stiff wind too!

However well done to Troon v Madron who followed the suggestion of the Trelawny League by trying
to get in an early kick-off. The idea was mainly to ease the referee shortage position, but on this
occasion with the weather worsening during the day, a brought forward mid morning kick-off thwarted
the heavy rain!

Everyone played their part - both teams, the referee Anita Gittins, even the new Troon new yellow
away kit which Madron had to wear as the visitors’ manager was unable to make it for the revised
kick-off time!

Its good to see clubs working together and its always worth a mention when it happens.

In fact, Troon were already getting a say in this issue (page 5) as they wanted to thank their sponsors
for helping them. If your club wants to do similar, just get in touch with me.

It was also refreshing to be able to feature two Player Profiles where it would seem loyalty is as
important as anything else - thanks to Dan and Sam, who like all the players profiled - they are always
more than helpful to me. A quick word for our referee too - in particular I like Steve’s answer to the “Any
embarrassing moments while refereeing” question.

I delayed this issue until after the weekend hoping the originally postponed Cornwall Senior Cup
games, plus the Cornwall Junior Cup 4th Round ones, would get completed, but that was a waste of
time! Because of this, at least some more clubs get a mention in the centre pages!

As always, thanks for taking the time to read this publication.

Enjoy your football.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT IN FOOTBALL: Relegated with
Bude. Losing Senior Cup final to Bodmin and not being able to make the game versus
Vospers to lift the SWPL D1W champions trophy after we had won to clinch the league!

WHICH PRESENT-DAY PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALLER DO YOU ADMIRE MOST:
Lionel Messi

WHICH PROFESSIONAL CLUB DO YOU SUPPORT: Plymouth Argyle

WHICH CLUBS HAVE YOU PLAYED FOR: Bude and Camelford

WHICH ARE YOUR FAVOURITE GROUNDS THAT YOU HAVE PLAYED ON: Weston-
super-Mare, Saltash, Buckland, Penryn and Camelford

WHICH IS YOUR LEAST FAVOURITE GROUNDS: Newquay, Falmouth and St Austell.
Never done well at these grounds!

WHAT TROPHIES HAVE YOU WON: SWPL West Divison and SWPL Charity Vase

WHO ARE THE BEST PLAYERS YOU HAVE PLAYED ALONGSIDE: Mark Gusterspn -
top striker. Josh Insley - gives a lot for the team. Andy Boxall - Mr Energy!! Adam Sleep -
great defender most of the time!! The County Youth lads have been a pleasure to play with
over the last few years. Neil Slateford played for the Camels for a bit and you could tell
how good he would be. Special mention to Kev Murt for doing my running for about 8 years!!

ANY EMBARRASSING MOMENTS WHILE PLAYING: I was playing in goal for Bude
when we had no goalkeeper and a shot trickled in to me, albeit slightly to my left, and I
misjudged the dive and ended up with my feet vertically above my head still moving and
dropping the ball on the goal line presenting their striker with a tap-in!

ANYTHING YOU WOULD LIKE TO CHANGE IN LOCAL FOOTBALL: Become more in
line with rugby with the player - ref interaction. Would like to see more players punished
for bad language towards referees.

TRELAWNY LEAGUE

HOPEFULLY YOU’LL ENJOY READING THIS DIVISION 3 MATCH OVERALL LEADING
REPORT FOUND ON FACEBOOK AS MUCH AS I DID RECENTLY GOALSCORERS (UP TO

St Erme - 1 West Cornwall - 4 13th Jan 2018)

A new year, a new start some may say, after 4 weeks without any football 29
and having consumed large quantities of booze and food it was back to Jowan May (Mousehole 3rds)
footy and the hope of starting the new year off with a bang and picking up
the first 3 pts of the new year. 26 (Mawnan, Mawnan
Liam Dent
Unfortunately for St Erme, West Cornwall hadn’t read the script and it Reserves)
turned out to be a day to forget for the Saints. The game got underway on
a soft pitch after the recent wet weather and it was the hosts who actually 21
dominated the 1st half but the visitors who took the lead which was a head Jack Liddicoat (Newlyn Non-Athletico)
scratcher, but that’s football for you. The closest the hosts got was when
Elliott Jolly met a Spencer Sanford corner with a powerful downward 18
header that was cleared of the line with a last ditch boot, the ball ricocheted Kalon Mayes (Mousehole 3rds)
back off Jolly and was saved by the keeper’s face and somehow scrambled
away to safety. 17
Michael Catterall (Troon AFC
The half time team talk consisted of us all agreeing to do what we had been Reserves, Troon AFC)
doing and turn the screw on the visitors and get back in the game and then Adam Keenan (Mawnan)
push on and get the points our 1st half performance deserved, however for Quaid Saunders (Perranwell Reserves)
the Saints it went a bit ‘Pete Tong’ as we crumbled somewhat and conced-
ed a comical goal within 10 mins of the restart to give ourselves a massive 16
problem, and as we pushed we got caught out again as West Cornwall Luke Carrol (Penzance Reserves)
scored a brilliant 3rd to seal the points.
15
St Erme however were still hoping they could find a way back and did Toby Angwin (St Just Reserves)
manage to pull one back within 5 minutes as a great ball was swung in by Christopher Bullock (Mousehole
Sanford again via a free kick, the ball was met by birthday boy and skipper Reserves)
Andy Mitchell who’s sumptuous side foot volley was buried to give the
Saints some hope, another chance quickly followed as Jolly hit the bar with
a header from a corner but it was looking like being one of those days.

Some further changes were made but to no avail and as the game came 14
to an end the ref awarded a dubious penalty as the ref felt keeper Lee Kit Claydon-Johns (Lizard Argyle
Langmaid had made contact on the striker as he threw himself to the Reserves)
ground – on discussion there had actually been no contact and the FA may Jack Froud (Frogpool & Cusgarne
seek to review it and see the West Cornwall player hit with a 2 game ban Reserves)
for diving, but looking at recent Premiership referees decision then this is Oliver Pridham (Newlyn Lions)
likely not to happen, VAR could have made a massive difference on this Chris Shackley (St Agnes Reserves)
decision but this is yet to be installed at Castle Fields.

The penalty was dispatched to make the score look quite flattering for the 13
visitors but they definitely deserved the win in the end, as for the Saints Danny Earl (Penwith Exiles)
then you could put it down to rustiness but as a team the simple things
weren’t done and it cost them on the day, a much improved performance 12
is needed going forward if they are to turn their fortunes around. Nathan Burt (Penwith Exiles)
Damon Nicholls (Ludgvan Reserves)
St Erme M.O.M Sponsored by some kind of alcoholic shot– Goal keeper Jason O'Sullivan (Hayle Reserves,
Lee Langmaid who made some good saves throughout, well played mate!!! Hayle 3rds)

24
Tom Hancock (Southgate) However, this doesn’t mean, come the end of the season and
should the team be in a position to take promotion, that they might
19 St not have had a change of mind and decide to stay in the Duchy.

13 BUT NOT
UNLUCKY FOR SAM!

PLAYER EXODUS! Giving close attention to Camelford’s Bobby Hopkinson

It doesn’t always go that
winning a trophy (or two)
means that a side stays
together, ask St Ives Town!
Skipper and featured player
Sam Twyford admits that
despite winning the LWC
Drinks Combination League
Cup, they suffered a bit of a
player exodus during last
summer! “Unfortunately, Joel
McWilliams, Max Davies, Joe
Day, Josh Magin, Dave
Boules and Simon Stevens all
left! McWilliams and Stevens
joined Penzance, while Magin,
Day and Davies went to
Ludgvan. Dave Boules moved
up country."

Only around seven or eight
from the Cup Final squad
remain, but at least the
majority of players that left at
least did so to play at a higher
standard of football.

NOW IN 13th SEASON AT THE SALTINGS

With Sam staying, it means he is now in his 13th season with the club that plays at The Saltings in Lelant, a
village before you actually get to the seaside resort.

Sam confirms he’s been a long time with the Saints, although he did venture away in the early days: “I
believe this is my 13th season with St Ives after making my debut at 16. I made the step up at 18 and played
for Penzance in the South Western League. That was the season that Wayne Quinn first signed for the club.
The following season I signed for Falmouth Town 1st team and played under Steve Massey.”

Despite being approached to play elsewhere, Sam had to weigh up how much actual match action he was
going to get: : “I knew I was good enough to play that standard, but never got the game time I was used to
at St Ives. I was guaranteed 90 minutes whatever the circumstances at St Ives, but I couldn't get to grips

Page 18 CORNISH SOCCER………………the voice of football in the Duchy

with being a bit-part player at either Penzance
or Falmouth.”

LOYALTY

Which meant there was only really one choice
for Sam, and that’s how it has continued with no
regrets: “I returned to St Ives on both occasions
half way through the season. I get asked each
season to make the step up again, but with work
commitments and the enjoyment I get from
playing for my local club I've never been
tempted since leaving Falmouth. I've been
captain for the last 8 or 9 seasons and with that
comes loyalty. I'm glad I played the highest
standard I could, but have not once regretted
not trying again.”

Sam’s loyalty was at last rewarded with a
couple trophies last season, but why has it been
so long for a club which in its 25 seasons to
date in the Cornwall Combination League have
only failed to finish in the top half of the table on
four occasions: “I've played in some really
strong St Ives sides over the years. Played
alongside Ryan Bushby, Ian Hodges, Chris
Russell, Simon Stevens, but always we came
up short when it mattered. The closest we came
to win anything with that team was when Truro
City were in the Combination! I believe they won
the league and cup double that season and
knocked us out in the semi. There was always
that one side pumping a bit of money in when
we felt we could win something!”

Finally, it’s often mentioned that the standard of the Combo league isn’t so good these days – so what are the
thoughts of someone who should know better than most : “I totally agree that the Combo isn't the standard it
once was! I've felt the standard has dropped year on year. I remember when I first started and there was a lot
more experienced heads with only a couple of youngsters in each side. You look at most Combination sides
now and it’s all kids, just like St Ives (apart from me!).”

STEVE ANNIS

“Make sure you join your local

Referees Association”

You were a player before taking up reffing, but
what made you take up the whistle and what do
you feel needs to be done to encourage more
former players to do the same?

I was picking up injuries as often as playing so when
I saw a course advertised I jumped at the chance to
stay involved in the game. We need to get around to
clubs and explain to older players how they could
extend their involvement. When they see ex-players
like Ian Roberts, George Pattison and myself who all
refereed into our 50's at Southern League level then
maybe they might get the bug.

What advice would you give to anyone locally
just starting out refereeing?

Make sure you join your local Referees Association.
There is a wealth of support and advice available to
help improve your game and increase your
enjoyment. Secondly, learn from your mistakes, you
will make loads, but not as many as the players, lol!

VAR is being tried in certain games now - what
are your thoughts on this move? Good or bad
for the game?

Because of the money at that level it’s needed to
avoid goal/not goal errors, especially in a crowded
goal area.

You reached a decent level of reffing, however
do you ever think that if you had started at an
earlier age, you could have gone even higher?

Yes I do wonder what if, but having seen the
amount of time involved with travelling, meetings
and time off work, I am happy to have had a few
years at a decent level.

CORNISH SOCCER………………the voice of football in the Duchy

One game in the Trelawny League last
Saturday was played, thanks mainly to an
early 11.30 morning kick off.
Troon’s goalkeeper Ady Martin had a fairly
quiet time as his side won 15-3 against
Madron

It probably helped get the match on as the
pitch hadn't had a game on it in 7 weeks!
The Troon goals came from Michael
Catterall (4), one also from his 16 year old
son Connor who was making his men's
debut, Carl Lee (2), Richie Ward (2), Ryan
Donovan, Jake Rowe, Jordan Day, Andrew
Osborne and Dean Dunn (2).
Troon also had to lend Madron their new
away yellow kit (seen in the background
here) due to their manager who had the kit
turning up after kick off !
