Those of you eagle-eyed readers Page 25 Trelawny League stats
might have noticed that this issue Page 27 CORNISH SOCCER advert
is marked as “February” - well
again apologies for the delay in
getting another issue out, but
unfortunately my hip operation
recovery didn’t go quite as to plan
and I ended up back in hospital
for another 8 days! Hopefully now, things can get back to normal and over the next few weeks
I’ll catch up with the magazine coming out as usual on time! Apologies to all.
For quite a few weeks I didn’t miss too much because of the weather and so there’s still plenty
of action and stories to come for sure.
This issue has been produced just ahead of a busy Easter programme and the arrival of the
ground-hoppers for the SWPL Easter Hop. Welcome to you all and I hope you enjoy your short
stay in the county. As well as the planned SWPL games, this issue mentions a few other games
over the holiday period that you might like to take in while you’re down here.
Next month one of the Player Profiles will be Carl Rickard who has recently left St Dennis for
Helston - to many of us a strange time to move, hopefully he will tell us why. Until then, enjoy
your football.
May I also thank Steve Winters (front page - https://www.facebook.com/Sport-in-West-

unable to get out and about.

The season starts here!
Well for St Blazey it does anyway!
After languishing for most of the
season at the bottom of the table, new
manager Alan Carey has come in and
what a transition!
A mixture of new faces - some young
and keen, some experienced and
street-wise, and all of a sudden the
Green & Blacks are fighting for
survival believing that they can really
do it.
Their most recently result witnessed
by CORNISH SOCCER was a 5-1
demolition of Newquay, a side if they
are not careful could be sucked down
into the SWPL Premier Division
relegation battle themselves.
Defender Leighton Carhart, one of
Carey’s recent signings, admits that
the new man in charge is doing the
business : “Alan's got us buzzing, we
will be fine, credit to him. There will be
even bigger games than today! And
we still have to go Newquay again as
well. Will 100% be exciting that's for
sure!”

PLAYER St dennis veterans
PROFILE
Sunday morning Veterans football may well have been
described recently as “the lowest form of football”, but when
a player of the calibre of our “Player Profile” this month is still
participating in it, you can’t surely ignore it!
Chris Truscott may well be the wrong side of 40 now, but it’s
clearly evident that he is still enjoying his football. At his peak,
he was Callington’s main striker in their back to back East
Cornwall Premier League championship wins.
So let’s firstly hear from the man himself about when he
played for Callington - how many seasons did you play for the
club, presumably it was around the late 90s when there were
two back to back ECPL titles and by the sounds of it, he
enjoyed a local derby! “I really loved the tough physical
derby matches back then when there were some real
rivals, especially Liskeard and Saltash.
I always liked to give as good as I got and wind a few
people up, but we also always enjoyed a few beers
together after the game.
These rivalries continued into Veterans football when
after a cup final my bag was accidentally picked up by the Liskeard team. I managed to
track it down and was told it was waiting for me in the Highwayman pub at Dobwalls. I
dropped in there on the way home, only to find the contents of my bag, including pants, all
hanging up around the pub. I was then not allowed to leave until I had downed some
cocktails they had made for me!”

Page 5
Heading towards a League and Cup double, understandably Callington were making the news in
the Cornish Guardian
Chris scoring for Callington v Foxhole in the 2004 CGECPL Cup final. He finished up on the win-
ning side with a 4-3 result and scored twice in the extra time period, coming from 2-0 down and
with ten men!
No wonder he rates it the best game he ever played in as also at the time Callington were strug-
gling in the league while Foxhole finished up League champions.
CORNISH SOCCER………………the voice of football in the Duchy
Page 6
A year later, Chris is now playing for Foxhole!
CHRIS HAS ALWAYS ENJOYED SUNDAY FOOTBALL!
“Some of the crazier times I had in football were with the Callington Social Club Sunday side
I used to run. We loved playing in the Sunday Cup and always took a bus on away days
which would end in some severe drinking sessions afterwards! One day, after returning late
in the evening from a match in Truro, we all staggered into the club off the bus with most
people in different states of undress. One was naked and zipped in the kit bag and another
was wearing just the first aid bucket! Needless to say our wives inside waiting for us were
not too happy as they marched us home in disgrace! It was just a shame we would do the
same again in the next round!”
In the four years
so far with the St
Dennis Veteran
side there’s
been plenty of
silverware as
they have
finished league
champions on 3
occasions, plus
winning league
and knock-out
cups

Page 7
Chris is keen to plug the county’s Veterans football scene, so let’s get him to tell us about the
League he plays in for St Dennis Veterans : “It’s the Cornwall Veterans League which consists
of 12 teams throughout the county from Callington down to Penzance, although they have
just withdrawn!”
And the age regulations? “The minimum age is 35. You can field the maximum of 5 between
35-40 and the rest have to be over forty.”
How many of your ex-team mates play on the veterans circuit? “There are many ex-players in
the Callington vets side that I used to play with, but also my mate Billy Davies plays in goal
for us at St Dennis. He was also my manager when at Foxhole. There are many past star
names who have donned their boots in the vets league in the four years I have been playing
such as Glynn Hooper, the Street brothers, Mark Rapsey, Gary Penhaligan, Darren Gilbert
and Billy Davies. Here are a few other names playing or have played vets who were well
known in the Cornish circuit Jerry Soloman, Gary Dyer and Paul Kendall who played for
Nanpean, the Mckellers and Derek Thompson for Bodmin, Neil Mullis (Liskeard) and Andy
Parr, Jowan May, Al Yendall and Rusty Rowson.”
Why would you recommend any former players to start playing veterans football? “I totally
recommend it as a great way to keep fit and keep in contact with old mates. It is a very
enjoyable league played to a very good standard and is always competitive with great banter.”
Finally, are you involved with a Saturday club, or do you go to watch and if not – why not? “No I’m
involved in Saturday football at the moment as I am helping with my son Harry at Saltash
United Juniors under-7 team. He is already a better finisher than I was!
NAME : Chris Truscott PLAYER PROFILE
DATE OF BIRTH : 24th August 1973
OCCUPATION : Project Lead in Dockyard
NICKNAME WHEN PLAYING : Trucker
WHO WAS YOUR BOYHOOD FOOTBALLING HERO : Kevin Keegan and later Alan
Shearer
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT IN FOOTBALL : The changing of
the league format, which ended a lot of local derbies, but also started the decline of the social
side of the game as so much travelling started to be involved.
WHICH PRESENT-DAY PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALLER DO YOU ADMIRE MOST : Messi,
took my son to his first match this week at Arsenal against Barcelona, he was awesome and
Harry's hero!
WHICH PROFESSIONAL CLUB DO YOU SUPPORT :
Newcastle United unfortunately!
WHICH CLUBS HAVE YOU PLAYED FOR : 10 years at Callington, Swingletree,Foxhole
Stars, Liskeard, Bere Alston and St Dominick
WHICH ARE YOUR FAVOURITE GROUNDS THAT YOU HAVE PLAYED ON :
Always loved playing at St Blazey and Bodmin not only because of the facilities but I always
used to score there.
WHICH IS YOUR LEAST FAVOURITE GROUNDS : Didn't really fancy going to St Breward
in the mid winter!
WHAT TROPHIES HAVE YOU WON : 2 ECLP leagues, 2 ECLP cups, 2 ECLP
Supplementary cups, 3 Bedford Cups, Duchy League and cup, Junior Cup finalists and over
500 goals!
WHO ARE THE BEST PLAYERS YOU HAVE PLAYED ALONGSIDE : My best strike
partner was Andy Snowden whilst at Callington I scored over 50 in one season and he
provided most of them. Tommy Rawlinson and Barry Ewence were class in our league
winning sides at Callington, plus played with many great players at St Dennis Vets now
including Billy Davis and Graham Rule.
ANY EMBARRASSING MOMENTS WHILE PLAYING : Too many misses to mention, also in
a Vets final I accidentally broken the one person’s finger and another's nose, both in front of
my children which took some explaining.
ANYTHING YOU WOULD LIKE TO CHANGE IN LOCAL FOOTBALL : Go back to the old
ECPL and bring back the old derbies.

As at March 20th P W D L F A +/- Pts Well what better way to compare the
leading clubs prospects than when they
1 Bodmin Town 24 20 4 0 99 27 72 64 have all played pretty much the same
64 number of games!
2 AFC St Austell 26 21 1 4 80 32 48 47
45 It’s really a question of “can anyone
3 Tavistock 27 14 5 8 61 35 26 44 stop Bodmin?” On Saturday they beat
42 third placed Tavistock 2-1, and the
4 Godolphin Atlantic 27 13 6 8 53 38 15 38 week before they did the same to
38 Godolphin Atlantic.
5 Ivybridge Town 29 13 5 11 58 49 9 38
37 After that match the G manager, Andy
6 Plymouth Parkway 21 13 3 5 55 25 30 35 Savage, suggested it was a game of
34 two halves : “It was a good game, we
7 Falmouth Town 26 11 5 10 43 43 0 33 were missing four players in Dilley,
30 Rigby, Brown and Cole. I'd say we were
8 Exmouth Town 26 12 2 12 52 57 -5 22 the better team first half, Bodmin came
22 out very strong in the second half and
9 Launceston 31 8 14 9 40 45 -5 22 got back in front and we were stretched
19 trying to find an equaliser. The most
10 Helston Athletic 25 11 4 10 45 44 1 18 disappointing thing for me were injuries
16 to Jamie Lowry and Ashley Bradshaw,
11 Witheridge 23 9 8 6 43 48 -5 especially with our League Cup
Quarter Final on Tuesday evening!”
12 Torpoint Athletic 26 9 7 10 41 46 -5
13 Saltash United 23 10 3 10 37 30 7
14 Cullompton Rangers 25 8 6 11 46 51 -5
15 Callington Town 24 5 7 12 39 58 -19
16 Newquay 23 6 4 13 27 56 -29

19 St Blazey 25 5 3 17 35 78 -43
20 Elburton Villa 25 4 4 17 24 78 -54
Bodmin’s title to lose? The run-in for Darren Gilbert’s Bodmin (see left)
originally hinged around the game against present
25-Mar 11:00 Away Camelford second-placed AFC St Austell, but with that fixture
02-Apr 15:00 Home Falmouth Town being rescheduled and put back, by time the two
06-Apr 19:30 Home Stoke Gabriel meet, the title could already be at Priory Park!
09-Apr 15:00 Away Saltash United Plymouth Parkway though might just have a say in
12-Apr 19:30 Away Plymouth Parkway things as Bodmin meet the Bolitho Park club twice
16-Apr 15:00 Home Torpoint Athletic before the season’s out. Surely though if Bodmin are
19-Apr 19:30 Away Ivybridge Town still out in front by the second meeting with Kevin
21-Apr 19:45 Home Witheridge Hendy’s side, the title is Gilby’s.
25-Apr 19:30 Home Saltash United
27-Apr 19:30 Home Plymouth Parkway Striker Adam Carter is once again doing his bit with a
30-Apr 15:00 Away Exmouth Town tally of over 20 goals already, but surely the club
02-May 15:00 Away Stoke Gabriel snapping up Andy “Rocky” Neal from Tiverton Town
04-May 19:30 Home AFC St Austell after the forward realised that perhaps the travelling
07-May 15:00 Away Cullompton Rgrs was going to be a little too much for him, has been the
real difference. His goal against Godolphin was his
35th SWPL strike of the season and he’s still got
another 15 games to go!
Including Cornwall Senior Cup and FA Vase ties, he’s now notched 43 in total, and has hit a
hat-trick or more in 9 games.
Rocky was able to confirm the goal tally - “Yeah that's correct since signing for Bodmin I have
32 in the 17 league games and 11 in the cup games including 3 in the Vase, 3 in the Walter
Parsons and 5 in the Cornwall Senior Cup.” Of course, let’s not forget the 5 or 6 league goals for
Tiverton before the move!
CORNISH SOCCER………………the voice of football in the Duchy
Page 9
Needless to say the goal-machine was happy with
things so far : “I would say this season has been a
very good one. I must say this squad is the best I
have played with and is without a doubt the reason
I have scored as many as I have.”
What about his thoughts on the SWPL champion-
ship race : “I would be disappointed if we didn't win
the title this year. I think the squad is the best in the
league and if we can continue the form we are in,
then we should win it.
Rocky Neal in recent Senior Cup “I feel it's a two horse race with St Austell and so
action at Mousehole the head to head game with them is massive in the
race.”
Finally with so many goals, it was good to hear the
striker admit it’s a team effort : “I am in good form in
front of goal this season, but it helps when the
players around you are as talented as they are.”
While leaders Mousehole look to be As at March 19th P W D L F A +/- Pts
heading seamlessly on to claim the
Division One West title, it’s probably fair to 1 Mousehole 21 20 0 1 88 13 75 60
say that there might be as much interest in
the runners-up race to see who gets 2 Penryn Athletic 22 14 4 4 77 21 56 46

Around the League!
Did you see that the recent Rowett Insurance League Cup Quarter Final cup tie between Edgcumbe
and Callington Town was decided after a 19 penalty shoot-out!
There was a goal apiece in the first half through Callington’s Jamie Martin opening the scoring,
before the home side’s Ryan Knight levelled things, however despite the early goals, the two sides
couldn’t be separated even though there was also 30 minutes of extra-time.
Eventually after 19 penalties, Callington went through to a semi-final meeting with Division One side
Bodmin Town.
AFC St Austell’s only league defeat of the season came when they met arch rivals St Blazey
recently. They lost 1-0 with Shane Kibell scoring the goal that at the time took the Green and Blacks
four points clear at the top of the table, since then they have consolidated the top spot with further
convincing wins over Padstow United (4-0) and Nanpean Rovers (6-0).
Previously successful manager at Torpoint Athletic, Dean Cardew, is back! Dean stood down last
summer, but a few weeks ago decided to return and I believe is joint manager of the team at The
Mill with Karl Curtis, the man who took over from him!

Welcome to the
Don’t be surprised if you see a few different faces at the South West Peninsula League games on
Thursday through to Saturday.
For starting with the local derby between AFC St Austell and St Blazey, there’s a band of football
followers, better known as “Ground-Hoppers”, who will be back in the county as the SWPL have
organised another Easter Hop, following on the back of previous successful events.
Previous ones have attracted hundreds of people visiting our Cornish grounds as the name of
their game is to watch a game at as many different grounds as possible.
“Groundhopping” can be defined as “a hobby that involves attending matches at as many different
stadiums or grounds as possible. Participants are known as groundhoppers, hoppers or travellers.
Largely a football-related pastime, groundhopping probably found its origin in football in the 1970s
in England. From the late 1980s fans in Germany started groundhopping as well. Currently it is
especially popular in the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium. There is no
universal set of rules for counting ‘hopped grounds’, although a generally accepted one is that a
match must have been seen at the ground.”
I’ve come across “hoppers” who don’t count the game unless they have seen a goal scored during
the game or that they have touched the match ball. However, one thing for granted, attendances
and everything that come with the “ground-hopper” will be boosted!
Indeed the SWPL has itself suggested that it expects “…around 300 hoppers to descend on us at
Easter, with some games expected to attract at least double that attendance as a lot of local der-
by matches are included.
Although there are many Ground Hops staged throughout the year, the Easter event is the main
one and started in the Northern League 22 years ago. It transferred to the old Devon & South
Western Leagues for 6 years from 1997 to 2002 and has visited occasionally since, the last time
being in 2011.”
Although there are obviously many a game scheduled for the Easter weekend, officially it is the
SWPL that is arranging this one and as posted on their website:-
“The event starts on Maundy Thursday (24th March) with a Premier local derby be-
tween St Austell and St Blazey (7.45pm kick off to allow people to travel down).
Good Friday sees us go West as we start with Illogan RBL v Penryn Athletic with an
11am kick off and then at 3pm we take in Wendron United v Porthleven before com-
pleting the day with a 7pm start at Helston Athletic who host near neighbours Falmouth
Town in a Premier Division game under the new Kellaway Park floodlights.
Saturday sees the coaches head East as we start off at Sticker for a 10.30am kick off
with Wadebridge Town before a short journey to St Dennis who host Millbrook at
1.15pm. We then trek to Bude Town to complete the weekend as they host neighbours
Holsworthy with a 4.45pm kick off time, allowing those wishing to go straight home to
be on the A30 by 7pm !”

A more light-hearted look at the definition of a
Groundhopper
(taken from the onion-bag.blogspot.co.uk)
Groundhopping
Groundhopping is the practice of visiting as many football grounds as possible.
This, however is an oversimplified explanation. The majority of people who do
this activity are known as groundhoppers and have either already been to the
majority of decent grounds or have some perverse dislike of good quality football
and stadiums. A consequence of this is that groundhoppers are more often than
not found at non-league football grounds - the more obscure and difficult to get
to the better.
The Ability to Boast
Groundhoppers are very fond of enquiring about the activities of fellow hoppers
- commonly trying to out-do each other with tales of where they've been. 'Have
you been to Bloxwich Rangers yet?' I've done all that league now including Dudley
Amateurs' new ground'. Most hoppers actually compete with their fellow travel-
lers and take pleasure only in having visited more grounds or more obscure
CORNISH SOCCER………………the voice of football in the Duchy
Page 16
grounds than each other. They sometimes travel in packs - sharing a car - but
this is frowned upon by 'real' hoppers who only ever use public transport.
Groundhopper Equipment
Groundhoppers are easily identified by the equip-
ment that they carry...
The Carrier Bag
Perhaps the most essential piece of equipment the
groundhopper possesses is the carrier bag. This is
usually a high grade bag with some 'posing' value
such as a cross-channel ferry company or a bus
company's name on it. The carrier bag is taken
everywhere and the same one is used until it liter-
ally falls apart. It is an ideal receptacle for carrying
other essential items…
Transport Timetables
Seldom is a groundhopper spotted without a myriad of public transport
timetables, most of which are completely useless in the area which he finds
himself. Even stranger than this is the chronic inability of most of them to
actually read a timetable which results in them grouping together en route in
an attempt to arrive in the correct place on time. Similarly, they all carry an
A to Z atlas and none of them can read those either. Many a local person has
been confronted by a dishevelled figure with a carrier bag on a Saturday
afternoon asking how they can get to the football ground on the other side of
town in two minutes flat.
The Notebook
An essential item is the notebook. These
appear in a variety of styles and sizes
depending on the individual 'hopper's'
needs. Some only need to jot down where
they've been, while others note the player's
names, others write match reports and
some have been known to draw scale dia-
grams of the ground they are visiting. The
notebook results in a number of traditions
the most significant being the need to
enquire of other hoppers 'got the teams yet'
CORNISH SOCCER………………the voice of football in the Duchy
Page 17
and the subsequent comparison of notes and any other important information
that can be passed on.
Essential Attire
One other piece of information required to grasp a basic understanding of
groundhopping is the essential attire. Let us start with the feet which are
always covered with a pair of old nylon socks and white trainers. Trousers are
seldom jeans and often what can only be referred to
as 'slacks', although this is a vague description because
these articles have never been seen on sale anywhere.
A football shirt is also required and must be one from
the hopper's local non-league team or an obscure
foreign team that nobody has ever heard of. An anorak
is then worn - in all weather and finally one mustn't
forget the personal radio with which the hopper listens
to the football results on Radio 5 which he claims not
to care about.
Poltair - where it all starts on Thursday evening

For those Ground-hoppers who might be staying
down in the county for a few more days, here’s some
more games you might be interesting in watching
Easter Sunday has now become the day for the Cup finals of the Cornish Guardian East Cornwall
Premier and Jolly’s Cornwall Combination Leagues, followed by on the day after the County Finals
taking place. This season however, only the Cornwall Senior Cup is being staged as the Cornwall
County FA have done a bit of a revamp and followed the wishes of the majority by staging the
Senior and Junior Cup finals on different days.
Let’s start with the CGECPL Cup - sponsored by Rowett Insurance

Carharrack’s Ryan Stephens has already hit 22 Combo goals this season with five of them com-
ing in the cup and no one more than manager Harry Pope knows what a goalscorer the striker is
as the two have been together for the past five seasons which included a three season stint at
Threemilestone. Pope’s favourite statistic that he has kept over this period is that Stephens has
scored 186 goals in 161 games and admits :”The bloke is one of my heroes and is on hot form at
the moment!”
