Letter from the Executive Leadership Team
Dear Friends and Lung Association Supporters,
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the American Lung
Association’s Evening of Promise Gala! It is an honor for me to be
involved with the Association and to chair such a remarkable group of
volunteers who serve on our Local Leadership Board and are so fully
committed to improving the lung health of Hoosiers.
We encourage you to enjoy the company of good friends, fine food
and lively entertainment, but tonight we are here, most importantly,
to address the need in our community for heightened awareness of
lung cancer and increased funding to help one day find its cure. Your
invaluable support will help advance vital research.
On behalf of our board, I extend a heartfelt thank you to tonight’s
sponsors, supporters, volunteers and guests. Your presence tonight
is critical to the fulfillment of the American Lung Association’s mission
to prevent lung disease and promote lung health in Indiana. Their
work begins with you!
Please enjoy your evening.
Sincerely,

The American Lung Association Serves All People
One of the tenants that binds us together as the American Lung
Association is that every breath matters, for every person, regardless
of color. As we join our fellow Americans to mourn for the loss of black
lives, both from racial violence and the pandemic, we acknowledge
how our humanity is linked, and that truly, every breath is precious.
We are committed to stand together with the communities we serve to
drive change to create an equitable society for all. As a public health
organization, this means we will continue to focus on action to address
the long-standing inequities that effect the health of the communities
we serve, including Black, people of color, and other marginalized
communities.
When you can’t breathe, nothing else matters.®

The Legacy Award
Honoring Allison Transmission
Each year the American Lung Association in Indiana honors an
individual or company demonstrating exemplary dedication to lung
health and healthier communities for everyone, through the Legacy
Award. Qualifications include a profound sense of determination
to educate their fellow Hoosiers to save lives by improving the air
we breathe and the lung health of our community. Lastly, they must
possess the generosity of spirit to rise to the occasion when called
to help.
Past recipients of the Legacy Award include Dr. Michael Busk (2011),
Sidney and Lois Eskenazi (2012), Eli Lilly and Company (2013),
Cummins Inc. (2014) CVS Health (2015), Roche Diagnostics (2016),
and Indianapolis Power and Light Company (2017), Anthem Blue
Cross Blue Shield (2018), Dr. Lawrence Einhorn, (2019). This year,
we are so pleased to honor Allison Transmission. Together, we will
recognize and celebrate Allison’s innovate approach to creating
carbon neutral vehicles and cleaner air for all.
Please join us in honoring Allison Transmission.
Improving the Way the World Works
As a responsible corporate citizen, Allison is dedicated to protecting human health, natural
resources and the local and global environment. This dedication reaches further than
compliance with the law to encompass the integration of sound environmental practices into
our business decisions.
Some highlights of Allison’s dedication include ISO14001 certified since 2001,
2017 membership into the Indiana Environmental Stewardship Program,
Partners for Polllution Prevention champion, partnered with the
Central Indiana Clean Air Partnership, and Zero Waste to
Landfill for production waste since 2009.

About Allison Transmission
In line with Allison Transmission’s efforts to provide a healthier work
environment for all its employees, contingent workers, and customers,
Allison recently completed the installation of high technology air-
handling systems that serve its Indianapolis manufacturing and
assembly facilities, transmission test operations, parts distribution
center and administrative offices.
Site-wide indoor air quality is critical to everyone’s health, and
Allison Transmission is committed to its environmental stewardship
policies. One of these policies addresses pollution prevention. Allison
works actively with local communities, government agencies, and
environmental experts to develop cohesive anti-pollution programs for
all of its facilities. The challenges under which we operate varies on a
global basis. However, our core environmental initiative is unwavering—
do not pollute the air, water or the earth.
The casual visitor to Allison Transmission’s Indianapolis campus will
quickly notice a number of innovative methods the company’s utilizing
to capture energy from natural resources—all before they enter the
Administration building. Solar panels and wind turbines are distrubted
through the company’s parking lots to provide critical night time
lighting. Allison also purchases electricity that is produced at regional
wind farms—at higher than local rates because the company believes
it has an obligation to its employees and shareholders to be a leader
in activities that protect the environment. Each kilowatt of energy that
Allison utilizes from non-fossil fuel burning power plants significantly
impacts the levels of harmful particulates that are emitted into the
atmosphere.
Allison Transmission’s Indianapolis campus is Zero Landfill Free. This
means, Allison recycles their waste materials and won’t ship or send
anything to landfills. In 2017, Allison recycle 2,308 metric tons of
materials that were generated from its manufacturing operations.
Allison is an active participant in the Partners for Pollution Prevention
Program, which includes several large environmental organizations and
the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM). In 2017,
IDEM awarded Allison with their coveted Environmental Excellence Award
which recognizes companies for their strong environment compliance
throughout their organization.
In conjunction with efforts to maintain a green and healthy work
environment, Allison is also focused on producing products that promote
lung health. For nearly two decades, the Allison H 40/50 EP™ electric
hybrid propulsion system for transit buses have eliminated over 406,465
metric tons (estimated) of carbon monoxide from being emitted into the
atmosphere. To date, Allison Transmission has sold over 8,000 hybrid
units that are distributed across 230 cities globally. Indiana University,
Purdue, IndyGo, and the Fort Wayne transit system utilize these Allison
Transmission products.
Allison is also expanding its “electrification” capabilities for commercial
vehicles, and we expect to see further air quality improvements as a result
of their innovation and patented technology.
Allison is also pleased that their new 9800 Oil Field Series™ transmissions
are seeing increased demand by oil field service companies. These
durable, reliable, and robust high-pressure pumping transmissions are
helping to lessen the United States’ dependence on foreign energy
through the production of cleaner-burning natural gas.
Finally, Allison Transmission has turned to its workforce in its efforts to
promote better lung health. Allison financially rewards employees who
take steps to quick smoking or who join smoking cessation groups. Allison
believes we all have a responsibility to actively improve our lung health—
let’s take a deep breath and get started.
Tonight’s Fund A Need — Benefiting the
Courtney Cole Endowed Lung Cancer Research Fund
The American Lung Association in Indiana is proud to share the
announcement of the Courtney Cole Endowed Lung Cancer
Research Fund, including $600,000 already raised toward the
$1 million goal. The research fund was created in memory of
Courtney Cole, a local mother of two who made the most out of
every day of her life.
In childhood she
earned several
athletic accolades
and reached national
recognition in different
sports at the college
level. In adulthood
she participated in
dozens of triathlons
and marathons.
Professionally, Cole and her sister, Monica Peck, became the
sixth-generation owners of Hare Chevrolet. Together, they grew
the company to one of the most successful car dealerships in the
country.
She would say that she was facing her toughest rival in lung cancer.
Still though, through the toughest years of her life, she kept a
normal routine for her two children and with the family business
until she died in 2019 at age 48.
“My biggest lesson is that life is truly a gift,” wrote the mother of
two after she found out her cancer had returned. “I have quickly
learned that every day is a gift and it is up to us to make the
absolute most of it.”
