Issue 17 July 2023 celebrating children’s writing in Primary Languages
t's nearly the end of term and time for the summer holidays, so that means it's time for the next issue of Write Away! magazine! I hope you enjoy seeing and reading what other people have been doing in their language lessons. Thank you to the students and teachers who submitted their work for this issue. Don’t forget to look out for my Editor’s Pick and check out this issue’s guest language. See you next year! Issue 17 July 2023 lightbulblanguages.co.uk/writeaway [email protected] Editor Clare Seccombe Our guest language for this issue is Italian. Italian is a Romance language, which means that it is descended from Latin. It is spoken in Italy, Switzerland, San Marino and Vatican City. There are about 85 million speakers of Italian. We use a lot of Italian words in English, such as fiasco, finale, graffiti, extravaganza, terracotta and magenta. We also use some Italian food words in English, for example spaghetti, pasta, pizza, broccoli, panini and pepperoni. If you play a musical instrument you might know some Italian words like piano, piccolo, cello, tempo and crescendo. sì grazie

Find out more information about the writing featured Basia Preece How long have the children been learning French? Since Year 3 How long are their language lessons? 30 minutes per week Describe briefly the teaching and learning activities that took place prior to the children writing this piece. We have been following the Language Angels unit on pets. We learnt the nouns for several different animals and then learnt to say which animals we have and what they are called. We put this together with some previous learning on introducing ourselves. What support did the children have to enable them to complete this piece of writing? They had their books to refer to and also a writing frame . What do you particularly like about these pieces of work? The children tried very hard to remember how to use many different grammatical points and vocabulary. Some also included qui s’ appellent (who are called) and which pets they would like (je voudrais). 1-2 quattordici How long have the children been learning French? 6 years How long are their language lessons? Describe briefly the teaching and learning activities that took place prior to the children writing this piece. The class was familiar with some of the rules relating to the use of adjectives from previous learning. New vocabulary was introduced for hair and eyes and practised orally through games such as noughts and crosses, beat the teacher and pair work “Guess Who”. Reading activities included matching descriptions to pictures of people. I did a “joint-write” with the class of a description of a wanted person based on a chosen picture. We discussed how to upgrade this model, by adding further adjectives and intensifiers. What support did the children have to enable them to complete this piece of writing? Language scaffold, vocabulary list, sentence starters, my WAGOLL. What do you particularly like about these pieces of work? Adjectives are used correctly, the writing is detailed and includes intensifiers. I like how the pieces are all very different to each other and include a wide range of vocabulary. I think the children should feel proud of their writing. How long have the children been learning French? Since Year 3 How long are their language lessons? One hour a week Describe briefly the teaching and learning activities that took place prior to the children writing this piece. The class practised the sports vocabulary, identifying cognates and initially making short sentences with opinions, in pair work battleship speaking games. Conjunctions were introduced along with a range of adjectives with a challenge to write the longest sentence possible! The class identified the rules relating to the use of faire and jouer using their detective work and practised saying sentences with days of the week and playing a big noughts and crosses game in pairs. The class also analysed a longer reading passage about sports to help reinforce vocabulary and structures. What support did the children have to enable them to complete this piece of writing? Vocabulary in books, word lists, language scaffold, my WAGOLL. What do you particularly like about these pieces of work? I like how the children have justified their opinions in detail and used a wide range of vocabulary and structures, including conjunctions and frequencies. They approached the written task with confidence, and I think they should feel proud of the work they have produced. sedici Viki Anderton 8-10
