SALLINA WITH THE JOHOR ENGLISH ACTION COMMITTEE 76

“The only way to do great work is to love what you do – Steve
Jobs.” This quotation fits Sallina Hussain like a glove. On the
surface, Sallina Hussein is an accomplished Deputy Director of
Education with over 20 years of experience in the education
system. Dive deeper and you will discover an individual who is
efficient at her job that we can consider her as a "learning
portfolio whisperer." Sallina has the ability to take a learning
crisis and transform them into productive and thriving pursuits.
Due to her skills, Sallina together with her team has produced
practical, workable and production oriented programmes. She
works well with officers, trainers and teachers. Her progressive
ideas are highly valued and thus, people trust and respect her
opinion. In 1995, together with her team of the Johor State
English Action Committee, she had focused on various
programmes as part of the continuous professional
development for the teachers in Johor and the ‘think tank’ that
responded to issues pertaining to teaching and learning.

77

THE TST MAGIC

One particular programme that could be considered to have
the ‘Eureka’ effect in the English Language teaching in
Johor is the Teacher Support Team Programme. The
Teacher Support Team is a program initiated by the Schools
Division, Ministry of Education. Her insatiable
passion for knowledge was further nourished when in
1995, she was selected for a five-week Teacher Support
Team Course at College of St. Mark and St. John Teaching
College in Plymouth, United Kingdom. Here was where she
was exposed to challenges, knowledge and ideas at an
international level. Under the coaching and training from
Tony Right, the head lecturer of the the Teacher Support
Team Course at Marjons, a group of teachers who had
been identified as potential TST members were trained as
the Master Trainers for TST. The master trainers in turn,
provided coaching to other teachers in the Johor state.

believes and smarter than she

training at Marjons, Sallina embarked on the idea of
Teacher Support Teacher. The notion was that only a everything better than negative
teacher would understand the challenges and
predicament of another teacher. Sallina and her Johor 79
TST team worked hard to revise and adopt the Teacher
Support Team ideas and concept to suit the local
scenario and the background of the English teachers in
Johor. Thus, with patience, dedication, and hard work, the
Johor Teacher Support Teacher Programme was born.
This made Sallina responsible in managing, leading and
supervising a team of 30 Teacher Support Teacher key
personnel. The Teacher Support Teacher team had
played a fundamental role in coaching, assisting and
motivating English teachers especially in the rural areas
of Johore. In Johor, TST operated on a district basis i.e.
the TST members went to schools identified by the
District Education Office and implemented some form of
coaching and on-site training depending on the needs of
the English teachers. The program was a success in
Johor and had become a benchmark for other states in
Malaysia. Sallina worked continuously with the Johor TST
team to design materials and tools to help improve
teachers’ performance.

CO-ACADEMIC STINTS IN ACTION

Being a leader, particularly in education, Sallina’s guiding force — call it a vision or passion, was to emphasise
on the importance of language and critical thinking skills. Thus, when Johor was selected to host the National
Level English in Camp for Primary Schools in 1996, Sallina herself was in action together with the teachers
to ensure the camp was a success and most importantly the children had a momentous time. During the
camp, the children were exposed to activities to boost their creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving
skills and to collaborate with their counterparts from all over Malaysia. Sallina’s administrative
position did not stop her to be where the action was in showing the importance of encouraging and
empowering children at a young age. The beautiful scenery of the camp
site in Air Hitam bore witness to Sallina’s leadership in working diligently with her team to engage and
motivate children to learn, think critically, create, collaborate, and ultimately became life-long learners.

Briefing to all the facilitators A session with the campers Sallina having fun with the campers on the fin8al1night

Sallina in action during the state level Public Speaking Competition During her tenure as the English Language Officer, Sallina
was also entrusted to lead the coacademic team. Being a
woman did not hold her back in order to lead the team and
give her best to Johor. In 2001, she had led the public
speaking team to organise the State Level Public Speaking
Competition. During the competition she had given tips to
the contestants on how to express themselves and to speak
out what was on their mind. This certainly added value to the
competition. Sallina always took any opportunity to inject
ideas and share knowledge to her audeince. That was how
industrious she was.

Co-academic activities are excellent platforms to be used to hone pupils’ language skills. Pupils learn better when they are
immersed in the language in an informal way. This was evident in all the co-academic activities that she led with her team.
In 2001, the State Level English Camp for Secondary Schools in Tangkak was a huge success with the pupils. The
activities were challenging but there was never a cry or fuss to be heard. It was very impressive to see some of the rather
reserve pupils came out of their shell and collaborated actively throughout the camp. It was heart-warming to see pupils
from different parts of Johor from different backgrounds accepting and respecting each other as they competed in the
games. Group support and chants rang out around the camp site as the campers continued relentlessly throughout each
game and challenge. They not only supported each other but also encouraged those who were lagging to do their best.
The ability to use English could be rather challenging to some but the campers were motivated, and this was visible when
they showed their effort to do presentation in English and what more, the modules designed during the camp had
certainly facilitated in building their language skills and characters. As reflected by Mr. Wee Kok Cheng, the then DEST
officer from Mersing, “The English-In-Camp in Tangkak was another achievement where the campers and English KPs had
really enjoyed. That was where songs like 'Surangani, Twinkle, twinkle little stars etc. ' which was sung in different slangs
came into existence and became synonymous with English in Camps. The activities planned and carried out were beyond
our expectations. We got excellent feedback verbally as well as from the comments in the campers’ logbooks.” So, English
in Camp not only encourage pupils to use English in a fun and relaxed atmosphere, it had also taught them several
important lessons about leadership, how to value the insights and support from the team members, how to make choices,
perseverance, good sportsmanship and self-confidence.

The morning briefing 84

In 2001, Sallina and her Johor English team was With the panel of judges, Encik Ali bin Ghani from BPSH and two other MOE officers
entrusted to organise the National Level Choral
Speaking Competition for Primary Schools in Johor
Bahru. She was also selected as one of the judges for
the competetition. Choral speaking is a melodious and
poetic team engagement. It is an enjoyable art form as
pupils worked in a group to form a choir-like recital of
poetry or prose presented in unison. Teams had to
perform by using the light and shade of different voices
effectively to build atmosphere, humour and tension by
blending their voices together to entertain the audience.
With all the talent and passion that she has, she had
been involved in many competitions such as story
telling, public speaking, choral speaking and debate not
only in Johor but all over Malaysia. Sallina and her team
collaborated well to ensure the success of all the
activities and programmes. As the saying goes “Talent
wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win
championships”.

Later in 2002, Sallina and her team was put in charge of the National Level Drama Competition in Mersing.

The sky is always powdered with stars and Sallina is

SENSATIONAL TEACHER IN THE HOUSE

Every good conversation starts with good listening and if you can speak, you can
influence. If you can influence, you can change lives. This reflects the adorable
lady, Sallina Hussain. She could foresee the importance of listening and speaking
skills. Listening is the aural medium that gives the way to language acquisition. It
enables learners to interact in spoken communication. Therefore, students with
good listening comprehension skills are able to participate effectively in class.

In 2020, she initiated yet another great idea to aid teachers in transforming their

classrooms to make it livelier and most importantly to make pupils more confident

and expressive during their listening and speaking activities. The module which is

named “KIDS SENSATION” is her last gift that will add up to her legacy before

she retires in May 2020. This idea sparked when she attended a competition in

Penang as she noticed that our students were unable to speak confidently even

though they were creative and innovative. Sallina believes that this issue needs to

be addressed and English teachers need to inject the correct antidote in their

teaching in order to develop higher confidence level and self esteem. In

collaboration with the Johor Corporation Foundation, the Kids Sensation Module

was built by a group of expert English teachers. The module focuses more on the

teaching of the speaking skills and it is suggested that the module is to be used

by all the English primary school teachers in Johor. The English Unit of JPN Johor

During the maiden launch of Kids Sensation at SK is very thankful to Sallina for inspiring the team to create a module that is hoped
Tunku Mariam, Batu Pahat
to breathe more life into the classroom. 98

THE MAESTRO

Leadership is not so much about technique and methods, as it is about opening the heart. This what exactly Sallina
has exemplified. Her leadership is about inspiration—of oneself and of others. It is not a formula or a program, it is
a human activity that comes from the heart and considers the hearts of others. Sallina has impacted many teachers
in Johor, whether it be firsthand or through the passion she portrays in her work. To Rokiah, the Senior Principal
Assistant Director of Languages, “Sallina is my syifu. I used to marvel at the passion and energy she has in the way
she dedicated herself in the teaching profession. I still remember some 15 years ago; it was during a sharing
session with her on our team building trip that evoked the calling inside to be an inspiring teacher. This had been
one of the catalysts that influenced me to be an effective teacher and it spurred me to move forward and finally be
appointed as an English Master Teacher by the MOE. Well, like they say, the rest is history”. Sallina does not always
have the things she possesses today, but it is the determination and drive that have brought her this far. Compared
to her fellows in the same generation, she was an exceptional women. So it is not surprising that she is the first
lady to hold the office as the Deputy Education Director of the Johor State Education department. We have to admit
she has the will and the soul of a leader and most of all an inspirational teacher. She is undoubtedly smart,
profound but yet vigorously caring and her personality is certainly a popular aspect of her. She is truly the maestro
of the Johor English Orchestra.

You and your leadership will be greatly missed ma’am.
