INTRODUCTION 1

The Chamber of Construction Industry, Sri Lanka (CCI) was formed as an Association in 2001 and was
registered on 25th March 2003 under Section 15 Sub-Section 1 of the Companies Act No. 17 of 1982. It was
founded by Construction Industry allied Professional Institutes and Associations, along with the National
Construction Association, Sri Lanka, to be the Apex Body of the Construction Industry. The Chamber’s
Corporate Membership currently exceeds 250 comprising of Professional Associations, Consultants,
Contractors, Statutory Agencies, Manufacturers and Suppliers of Building Materials and other allied
organizations.

Vision: To lead the Construction Industry, Sri Lanka towards developing excellence in the Built
Environment to meet the challenges of the 21st Century World.

Mission: Be the exclusive Voice for the Construction Industry, Sri Lanka and to provide a safe, high
quality, sustainable and eco-friendly Built Environment.

As the umbrella organization covering all the diverse Trade and Sectors within the Industry, the CCI
considers it incumbent upon itself to promote the expansion of services offered by its Member Institutions
and other Establishments. While the Bulletin published monthly by the CCI, discusses the current issues
in broad terms, the Catalogue has documented the information required by any person or company to
avail themselves of the services available with the Industry; it is also a Technical Reference Document
for Industry Professionals and will be invaluable for the potential Investors and Multi-lateral and Bi-lateral
Donor Agencies. By exposing the potentials and options available within the Industry and thereby acting as
a catalyst the Catalogue can contribute positively to the development of the Construction Industry.

While the Catalogue reflects the state of the Industry today it also reflects the deficiencies that the Industry
and the Policy Makers will need to address on a priority basis to elevate ourselves to an internationally
competitive position. While the presence of International Players in the field engaged by the Local Industry
is advantageous as far as Technology transfer is concerned and actually supplements inadequacies in
expertise that we may have, it should be our target to be able to cater for all the Construction needs of the
country and be able to expand our horizons beyond our shores. We should also strive to create a level field
for both the Local and Foreign Consultants and Contractors to reap the benefits of a market economy. We
hope this Catalogue would become a Database for decision-makers towards achieving that goal. If that
happens, then the desire of the CCI to see that the Catalogue is used to further the status of the Industry
will have been fulfilled.

The Chamber of Construction Industry, Sri Lanka (CCI), the First Publication of the ‘Construction Industry
Trade Catalogue’ was in 2006, and the Second Publication in 2008. The Third Publication published under
a new Title the ‘Construction Industry Trade and Business Directory’ was in 2013.

The Fourth Publication is more comprehensive in its reflection of the current state of the Construction Industry.
This Publication includes more than 275 Business Establishments engaged in the Construction Industry-
an increase of 50% over the previous issue. This increase stems not only from the additional information
contained herein, but also from the fact that the Industry is expanding in a burgeoning economy.

We appreciate the cooperation extended by all those who are listed in this Catalogue and are happy that the
prediction we made in the First Publication that this becomes a permanent feature and an ever-expanding
ever-improving Publication, has come true.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

OF THE CHAMBER OF CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY,
SRI LANKA (CCI)

This is the Fourth Publication of our Chamber of Construction Industry, Construction Industry Trade and
Business Directory. As President of CCI , I am elated by this Publication, as there are many new improvements
to the previous issues. In this issue, the number of “advertisements have substantially increased”.

The Chamber, which is the Accredited Representative of the Domestic Construction Industry has continued
to evolve since its inception in 2001. It has continuously focused on serving its Members’ and National
Interests, facilitating the development of the Construction Industry. This Publication will enable Consultants
and Contractors and also the Government and the Private Sectors to make well informed procurement
decisions, while vendors of Construction inputs, such as Machinery and Equipment are given a cost effective
medium to reach their targeted markets.

I am pleased to mention that this Publication is Sri Lanka’s exclusive Technical Reference Directory for the
Construction Industry, and for its Products and Service providers, including those from the International
Community.

I wish to thank all stakeholders for their participation in this publication and look forward to their continued
cooperation and support to further enhance our future Publications.

AAMA – Architectural Aluminum Manufacturer’s Association.
ABOVE-GRADE – The portion of a building that is above ground level.

A/C CIRCUIT - (Alternating Current) The flow of current through a conductor first in one direction then in reverse. It is used
exclusively in residential and commercial wiring because it provides greater flexibility in voltage selection and simplicity of
equipment design.
ACCELERATOR - Any material added to stucco, concrete, or liquid joint sealant which speeds up the natural set.
ADHESION – The property of a coating or sealant to bond to the surface to which it is applied.
ADHESIVE FAILURE – Loss of bond of a coating or sealant from the surface to which it is applied.
AGGREGATE - Crushed stone, slag or water-worn gravel that comes in a wide range of sizes that is used to surface built-up
roofs.
AIR DUCT – Ducts, usually made of sheet metal, that carry cooled air to all rooms.
AIR INFILTRATION – The amount of air leaking in and out of a building through cracks in walls, windows and doors.
20 AIR FILTERS - Adhesive filters made of metal or various fibers that are coated with adhesive liquid to which the particles of
lint and dust adhere. These filters will remove as much as 90% of the dirt if they do not become clogged. The more common
filters are of the throwaway or disposable type.

ALLIGATORING - A condition of paint or aged asphalt brought about by the loss of volatile oils and the oxidation caused

by solar radiation. “Alligatoring” produces a pattern of cracks resembling an alligator hide and is ultimately the result of the

limited tolerance of paint or asphalt to thermal expansion or contraction.

ALUMINUM WIRE - Conductors made of aluminum for carrying electricity. Aluminum generally is limited to the larger

wire sizes. Due to its lower conductivity, aluminum wire smaller than No. 12 is not made. Aluminum is lighter and less ex-

pensive than copper but not as good a conductor. It also breaks easily.

AMPS (AMPERES) - The rate at which electricity flows through a conductor.

AMMETER - Device to measure the current flowing in a circuit

ANCHOR BOLTS - Bolts which fasten columns, girders or other members to concrete or masonry such as bolts used to an-

chor sills to masonry foundation. Foundation plates or sills shall be bolted to the foundation with not less than 1/2” diameter

steel bolts embedded at least 7” into the concrete or reinforced masonry or 15” into unreinforced grouted masonry & spaced

not more than & apart.

ANGLE IRON – A piece of iron that forms a right angle and is used to span openings and support masonry at the openings.

In brick veneer, they are used to secure the veneer to the foundation. Also known as shelf angle.
24 ANNEALING – In the manufacturing of float glass, it is the process of controlled cooling done in a lehr to prevent residual

stresses in the glass. Re-annealing is the process of removing objectionable stresses in glass by re-heating to a suitable tem-

perature followed by controlled cooling.

ANTI-WALK BLOCKS – Elastomeric blocks that limit lateral glass movement in the glazing channel which may result from

thermal, seismic, wind load effects, building movement, and other forces that may apply.

APRROACH - The area between the sidewalk and the street that leads to a driveway or the transition from the street as you 29

ARCHITECT - A tradesman who designs and produces plans for buildings, often overseeing the building process.
ARCHITECTS RULE (ruler) - Three sided ruler with different scales on each side. Also referred to as a “scale.”
ASPHALT - A dark brown to black, highly viscous, hydrocarbon produced from the residue left after the distillation of petro-
leum. Asphalt is used on roofs and highways as a waterproofing agent.

BACKER ROD – In glazing, a polyethylene or polyurethane foam material installed under compression and used to control
sealant joint depth, provide a surface for sealant tooling, serve as a bond breaker to prevent three-sided adhesion, and provide
an hour-glass contour of the finished bead.
BACKFILL – (1) filling in any previously excavated area. (2) in carpentry, the process of fastening together two pieces of
board by gluing blocks of wood in the interior angle.
BACKFLOW- The flow of liquids through irrigation into the pipes of a potable or drinking water supply from any source
which is opposite to the intended direction of flow.
BACKFLOW PREVENTER - A device or means to prevent backflow into the potable water supply.
BACKHOE - Self powered excavation equipment that digs by pulling a boom mounted bucket towards itself. It is used to dig
basements and/or footings and to install drainage or sewer systems.
