KARYA BAHASA MELAYU 2018

Pelajar merupakan modal

peneraju negara masa depan. Sejarah

peradaban manusia jelas membuktikan

Persoalan yang kerap bermain

di gawang minda ialah peranan

sekolah dalam kemenjadian seseorang

pelajar. Hal ini demikian kerana

sekolah merupakan institusi pertama

bagi setiap pelajar mengenal tulis,

baca dan kira. Namun dalam

menongkah arus teknologi moden,

tidak dapat disangkal terdapat

segelintir pelajar yang kecundang

di sekolah atas pelbagai faktor. Oleh lumus belajar sebelum peperiksaan
yang demikian konsep penyayang
dalam kalangan guru dengan pelajar Akhir Tahun 2018

semakin disogokkan kepada warga

pendidik.

Semoga SMK
ASYAKIRIN terus cakna sebagai pusat pendidikan dan
merubah wajah generasi muda di kawasan Sg, Plan, Bintulu.

ENEMY AT THE
GATE

The first trace of dawn leaking through the holes
of my roof woke me up from my slumber. As I
tried to sit on my bed, I struggled to open my

eyes, trying to adjust them to the brightness of
the sharp sunlight shone on it. “Come on, get up!

We have an important gathering at the field
today. Faster!” hollered Terry as he threw a white

towel on my face. Frustrated by his action, I got
up from my bed and headed to the bathroom to
clean myself. As I looked into the mirror, I could

see a scar on my shoulder. A scar that would
always remind me not to do the same mistake

again.

“Never go out there alone”. No. I never listen
to them. As I tried to be a hero, I ended up

alone in the city for the whole night.
Different emotions battled for dominance in
my mind and heart. Confusion. Fear. Panic.
But laced through it all was the dark feeling
of utter hopelessness, like death which drew

nearer. Suddenly, a loud sound of broken
branches echoed through the room where I

was hiding, making my heart palpitated
with fear. Utterly distraught, my body shook
uncontrollably. As I scanned my surrounding,
I caught a glimpse of silhouette passing by

the window. I held on my gun tightly and
aimed at the door as I expected that they

were not too clever to go through the
window. All of a doodah, the window’s
glass shattered, sending glass fragments
flying everywhere. As I could see a group of
people from the window trying to get into
the room, my blood drained from my face.
While I quickly aimed my gun at them, I
started to pull the trigger and kill those

insane creatures – Zombies.

As I hastened my pace out of my house and
towards the field, I could see a group of

people sitting on the chairs, staring at me.
“Come on, Private! Faster,” Newt snarled

furiously, as he clapped hand to feague me
to run faster. As I reached them, I sat on a

chair, trying to catch my breath. “Okay, now
everyone is here.

Today, we have a mission. We are going to enter the
city,” muttered our leader, Luke, as he passed the gun
to all of us. “I got a piece of information from our
Runners that some of the citizens are still alive and
had yet been bitten by the zombies.” Luke said
despondently. “Now we need to rescue them. My
advice is not to walk alone. Not like what our bravest
soldier did in the past.” Knowing it was me whom Luke
was referring to, I looked down, feeling ashamed of
my own blunder. “Luckily, he is immune to the virus. I
nearly wanted to kill you that day but luckily Dr.
Greenie stopped me,” Luke mumbled gently, as he
looked daggers at me. “Now let’s go to the Gate and
started our mission,” I grouched gloomily, as I
reloaded my gun with the ammo on the desk.

“Careful. Don’t do anything stupid that would make
those people chasing us,” Newt whispered inaudibly
as we were here at the center of the city. As I heard
his command, I nodded to him, and ducked myself,
trying to move as stealthily as I could. Abruptly, Terry,
who was trying to enter the building, where the
citizen hid themselves, accidently made a loud bang
when he tried to open the door. Suddenly, an
ominous calm followed. Pandemonium broke out and
the zombies started to run frenzily towards us.

“Throw everything you have!” ordered Luke wrathfully
as he shot the zombies with his gun. As the zombies
approached me, I took out my knife from my pocket
and stabbed the zombie’s head. “Quickly, we need
to run to our base. The mission has failed. They will
be safe there.” Luke bellowed furiously to us, as we
started to move towards the Gate. “But how about
them? I think that door won’t hold them for another
day!” I fumed infuriatingly at Luke while aiming my
gun to the nearest zombie.

“So be it. Let God determined the fate of those
people. We will send Runners to check on them at
night. If they are safe, we will rescue them
tomorrow!” yelled Luke loudly, trying to convince me
that they would be safe. I finally made my mind and
obeyed the command, even though I thought that
saving them was more important. As I nodded to
Luke, we started to run to the Gate. Shuffling
backwards had strained my leg to the max, and they
burned with heat and were beginning to cramp. I
recited a prayer that the door would keep them safe.
As the zombies were getting more and more and we
were out of ammunition, I turned around, and ran as
fast as I could towards the Gate.

“Are you done?” Terry’s words jolted me back to
reality. “Yup. Almost. You go first. I’ll catch up
later.” I stated in a matter-of-fact tone trying my
best not to be emotional. The incident really hit me
hard as I believed the victims were really putting
high hopes on us to save them. Drying my face with
the white towel, I took a deep breath and told
myself that no matter what, I must be determined to
accomplish our next mission. I put on my uniform,
grabbed my rifle and joined the rest of the team.

A WALK TO
REMEMBER

Three black lines streaked across the
triplet’s cheeks, side by side as they
tried to look fierce. Towels were tied
around their necks as capes. Bowls
and basins, which were completely off
from the size of their head, made their
faces barely could be seen. I watched
them as they staged out the scene in
the “Lord of the Rings” which their
uncle bought last night. I cracked a
small cackle as I heard one of the
triplets mumbled the wrong lines.
Raising his stick up with the leaves still
on its twigs, Allen mumbled his lines.
He played the character of Gandalf,
the part before he fell into the pit.
Stretching his hands out wide, he
looked out to the sky after he climbed
the bench and muttered his words.
“Fly you poop!” said Allen and allowed
the gravity to do their work on him as
he jumped off from the bench. He then
hid behind a tress and the other twins
came out dramatically crying for him

THE FINISHING LINE

It was burning hot in the stadium and the air was
heavy with expectation. The loud blast of a horn

signaled the start of the 800 metres race. A
mass of bodies surged across the starting line.
Diana was among the runners who led the pack.
She swung her arms and legs in a graceful easy
rhythm, “I can do it,” Diana thought to herself.
She wanted to clinch the gold but she had not
been able to lay her hands on the elusive medal

in previous years.

Diana’s legs ate up the distance as she pulled
away from the other challenging athletes. She kept
her eyes on the horizon. Her body functioned like a
well-oiled machine. “You’ll never make it as a top
runner.” The voice of an unbidden memory broke
through her calmness. Diana shoved it aside and

focused on her goal. She had been following a
proper diet, going extra miles in her training and

working out in the gym to boost her muscle
strength. Her body was in tip-top condition.
Someone passed her. Diana’s eyes followed her.
Alicia was one of the several who had defeated her
in the last few races. Diana moved faster. She
stayed close to Alicia like a haunting hound. The
second round added up, 400 metres more to go.
Fatigue crept in. By now, she was drenched in
sweat and her singlet clung to her back. Diana was
breathing harder but she had overtaken Alicia. She

was in the lead.

Diana felt a sudden sharp pain in her legs but she
brushed away all the thoughts of slowing down. As
time ticked away, her strides became heavy-footed.
Her legs felt as though bricks had been strapped to
her ankles. A sign read ‘100 metres’, the remaining
distance to the finishing line, but Diana could not

rejoice. She wobbled and staggered, running
unsteadily. Without warning, her energy level
plunged to zero, hitting the wall. Totally drained,
she lost every bit of control. He legs buckled,
sending her sprawling on the asphalt. Diana could
see the finishing line ahead of hear, a 50 metres

away.
“No…,” her brain shrieked, not even having the
energy to cry out loud. Diana gritted her teeth. She
pulled herself up and forced the right knee forward.
Then, the left knee. The pain from her grazed skin
on her knees and palms egged her on. 40 metres.
Each step was a gigantic struggle to keep her head
up. 30 metres. Her eyes bore into the two parallel
lines signaling the end as she ploughed on. Her

arms could barely hold her up. 20 metres.
