“Way, way, back” – Over twenty years ago
(and not long after our production began!) a respected critic
wrote “I could watch this show a hundred times and then come
back for more… It sweeps away all of the dreary sham that
nowadays passes for theatre. It has everything: wonderful
music and lyrics, splendid direction and choreography,
characters and clowns, and one of the best storylines ever
written. But above all it has honesty. It has a dedicated team
who want to entertain, who dance like dervishes and sing their
hearts out. You get a feeling that they love it. You have sort of a
hunch that they love you. You know that they are going to give
the theatre an evening that will be remembered.”
As I sat down to write these notes, I felt that there was really
little I could add – except to say that the critic was right.
We do love it! Every principal performer, every brother, mother,
slave, child, musician or stage hand who has travelled on this
“juggernaut of joy” has been personally enriched by their
association with this wonderful musical.
This production is dedicated to the genius of Tim and Andrew,
and is simply to say thank you to them from thousands of
performers and millions of theatregoers all over the world,
who have all come to believe that for two magical hours
at least – “If you think it, want it, dream it,
then it’s REAL – you are what you feel”.
And finally it’s for David Land and
Peter Lawrence from “a boy whose
dreams came true”.

Any Dream Will Do…
The smash hit BBC show Any Dream Will Do introduced a whole new generation of fans to
the music, excitement and Technicolor brilliance of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s seminal musical.
Watched by millions every Saturday night, the show was produced to find a leading man for the new
West End production. After twelve nail-biting weeks, the public finally decided that Lee Mead would be
the West End’s newest star.
But for some of the other finalists this was only the beginning of the journey: Bill Kenwright recognised
the extraordinary talent which was being nurtured week on week and decided they too should have the
opportunity to perform live on stage in this wonderful show. To date, four of those finalists have appeared in
the touring production of Joseph: Antony Hansen, Chris Barton, Keith Jack and, with his hugely popular
portrayal of Joseph, Craig Chalmers. They were soon to be joined by another TV finalist –
this time the BBC’s I’d Do Anything provided the opportunity for talented finalist Tara Bethan to join the
company as narrator, at the same time as Antony Hansen took on the role of Pharaoh.

Pharaoh: Pharaoh: Where have they gone, where did they go?
Now Joseph here’s the punch line We were in a jam Eh bien, raise your berets
It’s really gonna blow your mind Would have baffled Abraham To those Canaan days
FE & Choir: But now we’re a partnership
Bap shu wa du wa bap bap shu wa du wa It’s just a piece of cake THE BROTHERS COME TO EGYPT /
Pharaoh: GROVEL, GROVEL
Well the bad corn was FE: Choir & Female Ensemble:
As bad as it had ever, ever, ever, ever been Greatest man since Noah Narrator:
Well this dream has got me all shook up ba ba ba ba ba ba ba Only goes to shoah So back in Canaan the future looked rough
Treat me nice and tell me what it means ba x 14 Jacob’s family were finding it tough
Hey, hey, hey Joseph Ba x 16 Joseph & Pharaoh: Brothers:
Won’t you tell poor old Pharaoh screams Anyone from anywhere can make it For the famine has caught us unprepared
What does this crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy If they get a lucky break We are thin, we are ill, we are getting scared
Its enough to make anyone weep
dream mean? Narrator: Choir: We are down to our very last sheep
Oh, yeah This could be a happy ending oo-ee-oo-ee We will starve if we hang around here
Repeat Perfect place to stop the show oo-ee-oo And in Egypt there’s food going spare
Joseph after all has gone oo-ee-oo-ee They’ve got corn
About as far as he can go oo-ee-oo Fruit and drinks
And if we have time
PHARAOH’S DREAM EXPLAINED But I’m sure that Jacob and We can see the Sphinx
His other sons have crossed your mind
Joseph: FE & Choir: How had famine hit the family Joseph left behind?
Seven years of bumper crops are on their way KING OF MY HEART Choir & Narrator:
Years of plenty, endless wheat and tons of hay So they finally decided to go
Your farms will boom, there won’t be room Pharaoh: Off to Egypt to see brother Jo
To store the surplus food you grow Oh – I know they treat me nice Where they all lay before Joseph’s feet
Any place is paradise
After that, the future doesn’t look so bright Ba ba ba ba ba ba ba When I walk in the room Brothers:
Egypt’s luck will change completely overnight Ba ba ba ba ba ba ba They tell me they need me, pretending it’s burning love Mighty prince give us something to eat
And famine’s hand will stalk the land Oo-ee-oo oo-ee-oo But way, way down I feel so bad
With food an all-time low Ba ba ba My heart is cold and sad Choir & Narrator:
As silent as the tomb Joseph found it a strain not to laugh because
Noble king, there is no doubt What can a fool such as I do to earn their love? Not a brother among them knew who he was
What your dreams are all about It’s all too much I shall now take them all for a ride
They won’t let me be After all they have tried fratricide
Joseph, FE & Choir: I must escape
All these things you saw in your pajamas The wonder of me Joseph: Choir:
Are a long range forecast for your farmers I feel I’m acting in a play I dreamed that in the fields one day
Where every line I’m forced to say
Joseph: Foretells impending doom The corn gave me a sign
And I’m sure it’s crossed your mind I’m playing for keeps but I know I must learn my part Your eleven sheaves of corn
What it is you have to find Ah Learn to be king of my heart All turned and bowed to mine
Find a man to lead you through the famine Ah Oh lordy lordy lordy lordy I dreamed I saw eleven stars la la la la la la la la la la la
With a flair for economic planning Ah How I yearn to be king of my heart The sun the moon and sky la la la la la la la la la la la
But who this man would be Ah I won’t surrender Bowing down before my star la la la la la la la la la la la
I just don’t know But who this man To suspicious minds And now I realize why la la la la la la la la la la la
Joseph & Ensemble: I must break
Who this man would be would be The tie that binds How do I know where you come from?
I just don’t know I just don’t know I’ll break, break away from shallow things You could be spies
Who this man would be From the lonely world of kings Telling me that you are hungry
I just don’t Jo! But who this man A world of golden gloom That could be lies
would be I’ll follow that dream make a tender and brand new start How do I know who you are?
Then I’ll be king of my heart Why do you think I should help you?
I just don’t know The King of this old wooden heart Would you help me?
I just don’t Jo! Then I’ll be king of my…
Heart Brothers:
Yes
STONE THE CROWS Joseph:
Why on earth should I believe you?
I’ve no guarantee
Narrator: Brothers: Narrator & Choir:
Pharaoh said Grovel, grovel, cringe, bow, stoop, fall Grovel, grovel, grovel
Worship, worship, beg, kneel, sponge, crawl Grovel, grovel, grovel
Pharaoh: THOSE CANAAN DAYS
Well stone the crows Brothers:
This Joseph is a clever kid Jacob: We are just eleven brothers
Who’d have thought that fourteen cows Do you remember the good years in Canaan? Good men and true
Could mean the things he said they did? The summers were endlessly gold Though we know we count for nothing
The fields were a patchwork of clover When up next to you
Joseph, you must help me further The winters were never too cold Honesty’s our middle name
I have found a job for you We’d stroll down the boulevards together Life is slowly ebbing from us
You shall lead us through this crisis And everything round us was fine Hope’s almost gone
You shall be my number two Now the fields are dead and bare It’s getting very hard to see us
All: From sideways on
Narrator: Choir & FE: No joie de vivre anywhere
a Pharaoh told his guards to fetch oo-ee-oo -ee Et maintenant we drink a bitter wine Brothers: Narrator & Choir:
town A chisel from the local store oo-ee-oo Brothers: Grovel, grovel, cringe, bow, stoop, fall Grovel, grovel, grovel
Whereupon he ordered them oo-ee-oo Those Canaan days we used to know Worship, worship, beg, kneel, sponge, crawl Grovel, grovel, grovel
To cut the chains that Joseph wore ee-oo-ee-oo Where have they gone, where did they go?
Eh bien, raise your berets Joseph:
Joseph got a royal pardon oo-ee-oo -ee To those Canaan days I rather like the way you’re talking
And a host of splendid things oo-ee-oo Jacob: Astute and sincere
A chariot of gold, a cloak oo-ee-oo Do you remember those wonderful parties? Suddenly your tragic story
A medal and some signet rings ee-oo-ee-oo The splendour of Canaan’s cuisine It gets me right here
Our extravagant, elegant soirees
Joseph Joseph The gayest the Bible has seen Brothers:
Pharaoh’s number two Joseph It’s funny but since we lost Joseph This is what we hoped he’d say
Joseph We’ve gone to the other extreme
Egypt looks to you No-one comes to dinner now Joseph: Brothers:
All: All this tugging at my heartstrings Grovel, grovel
Narrator & Female Ensemble: Choir: We’d only eat them anyhow Seems quite justified Cringe, bow, stoop
Seven summers on the trot oo-ee-oo I even find I’m missing Joseph’s dreams I shall give you what you came for Worship, worship
Were perfect just as Joseph said ee-oo-ee-oo Brothers: And lots more beside beg, kneel, sponge
Joseph saw that food was gathered oo-ee-oo-ee Those Canaan days we used to know Brothers: Joseph & Choir:
Ready for the years ahead oo-ee-oo Where have they gone, where did they go? Thank you, thank you, cringe, bow, stoop, fall Grovel, grovel, grovel
Eh bien, raise your berets Worship, worship, beg, kneel, sponge, crawl Grovel, grovel, grovel
To those Canaan days
Seven years of famine followed oo-ee-oo-ee Jacob: Narrator:
Egypt didn’t mind a bit oo-ee-oo It’s funny but since we lost Joseph Joseph handed them sackloads of food
The first recorded rationing oo-ee-oo All: And they grovelled in base gratitude
We’ve gone to the other extreme
In history was a hit ee-oo-ee-oo Perhaps we all misjudged the lad Narrator & Choir:
Perhaps he wasn’t quite that bad Then unseen, Joseph nipped out around the back
Choir & Female Ensemble: And how we miss his entertaining dreams And planted a cup in young Benjamin’s sack
Joseph how can we ever say Brothers: When the brothers were ready to go
All that we want to about you? Those Canaan days we used to know Joseph turned to them all
We’re so glad that you came our way Where have they gone, where did they go? With a terrible stare and said
We would have perished without you Eh bien, raise your berets
To those Canaan days Joseph:
Pharaoh: Jacob: No No No No No
Joseph we are the perfect team Those Canaan days we used to know
Old buddies, that’s you and me WHO’S THE THIEF?
I was wise to have chosen you
You’ll be wise to agree Joseph:
Stop, you robbers-
Choir & Female Ensemble: Your little number’s up
Joseph how can we ever say One of you has stolen
All that we want to about you? My precious golden cup
We’re so glad that you came our way
We would have perished without you

Excerpt from the book ~
‘A panorama of popular theatre in Britain in the twentieth century.’
In the final paragraphs of the final chapter of John Moore’s
wonderful celebration of the last vintage Gaiety theatre
on the British mainland, the Gaiety Theatre, Ayr, he writes ~
“The brightest most encouraging event of the
new millennium was the return of
JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT.
Once again it was brilliant, encapsulating
everything that is good in theatre.
Truly, in a century of the Gaiety there had
simply been no other touring show
remotely like Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s
JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT.
as presented by Bill Kenwright.”
