Tournament of Minds
This has been a new opportunity this year for our pupils to extend
their thinking in a lateral, ‘out of the box’ way. For the first time we
have entered 4 junior high teams into this year’s national
competition. TOM is an international programme designed to give
participants the opportunity to participate in creative activities
involving stimulating open-ended challenges, which demand
experimentation and reward divergent thinking in four main areas:
Language and Literacy; Esteam; Arts and Culture and Social
Sciences
Challenges are designed to develop critical, creative problem-
solving approaches and techniques and encourage the
development of the various 21st century skills and behaviours. On
Tournament Day, teams of seven students are required to present
their solutions to two challenges - the Long Term Challenge and the
Spontaneous Challenge. These challenges are designed to foster
the development of attitudes and skills that are valued by
employers and to promote lifelong learning. Mazeltov to the
following groundbreakers for having been willing to take on the
TOM Challenges this year.
Team 1: Gabi Querido, Charlee Levitt, Amala Moodley, Zachary
Rosenberg, Hannah Atie, Jami Levy (Moreh Or Kadar)
Team 2: Samantha Wolffe, Savanna Klaff, Ella Orford, Maxine Zacks,
Zachary Coetzee, Matthew Kretzmar, Coby Selikowitz (Ms Tanya
Steyn)
Team 3: Mira Gibson, Leah Rodenacker, Jessica Sherman, Ariella
Landau, Benjamin Levinson, Neo Hermus, Amy Distiller, David Buys
(Mrs Amanda Varkel)
Team 4: Tim Polakow, David French, Ruby Webb, Sarah Allardice,
Joshua Atie, Tori Bruk, Joshua Van Tonder (Mrs Rentia Pretorius and
Mrs Mart-Mare de Klerk)
This year, for the first time, Herzlia entered a team into the World
Ort Taub Yep Entrepreneurial Competition – an annual
entrepreneurship competition. The program was offered to any and
all students who were interested in this unique, exciting learning
opportunity. The students involved are Sarah Allardice, Taya
Allardice, Tatum Benatar, Gemma Cohn, Joshua Daniel, Gabriel
Dubb, Aaron Schwartz, Jonah Schwartz, Adam Selikowitz and Jenna
Zetler – Herzlia High School students from Grade 9, 10 and 11. We
compete against other teams across the Southern Hemisphere like
Argentina, Brazil, Panama and also South Africa. The program is all
about developing entrepreneurial and teamwork skills and we do
this by participating in a number of team challenges throughout the
year as well as the main and final challenge where, as a group, we
develop a product and pitch it to a panel of judges. Each of the
challenges are scored and weighted and the team with the highest
overall mark, will win the title of ORT’s Young Entrepreneurship
Team of the year. So far we’ve completed an introduction
presentation which included an “impossible sell”, a market research
report where we performed a swot analysis on Apple Inc. and
presented our findings – and a business concepts report where we
had to brainstorm innovative, creative and relevant product ideas.
We received 8.8 out of 10 for our market research and full-marks for
our business concept report, the two highest marks for both
challenges, placing us in first position in the competition.
So far, it has proven to be a valuable experience and
learning opportunity. We’ve learnt and enhanced skills
like problem solving, critical thinking, teamwork,
leadership and presentation skills. This term, we even
had the opportunity of meeting an entrepreneur and
former shark from Shark Tank who gave us feedback and
advice on our business concept ideas for the Go/No-Go
challenge that we are currently preparing for. We’ve
really had to push ourselves to think creatively and
innovatively, researching issues and brainstorming
solutions to come up with a worthy business initiative.
We are excited to bring our business concepts to life and
for the rest of the program and competition!

Herzlia aims to expose pupils to as many learning
opportunities as possible. 2021 has seen pupils participating
in a large number of exciting activities and events during the
school day and in the afternoons.
Herzlia established its first Esport virtual drone racing team in
the High School. This engaging ESTEAM extramural presents
pupils with the opportunity to develop their fine motor skills
while competing against pupils from schools across South
Africa. We are proud to announce that Herzlia pupils took up
all three top positions in the Inspire Africa Drone Racing
League.
One of the Innovation Centre additions, the Makerspace, has
been buzzing with activity throughout the year with pupils
from Gr R-11. Activities included: design and construction of
animal shelters, 3D South African province representations,
electric circuits, new product inventions, animal cells and
viruses.
Our newest subject, ESTEAM, presented Gr 7 pupils with the
opportunity to develop virtual properties in Minecraft
Education. Gr 7 ESTEAM and JLL have also joined forces in
their Stop Motion Animation project that will allow pupils to
enter the World ORT animation competition later in the year.
In Gr 8, ESTEAM becomes an elective subject
Pupils who choose to do ESTEAM in Gr 8 and 9 are exposed to
Mechatronics and Civil Engineering that include classic
computing, coding in JavaScript, Python and HTML, working
with EV3 robots and Mavic drones as well as more advanced
3D design and printing. Grade 9 ESTEAM pupils also had the
opportunity to collaborate with Drama and Art pupils on a CGI
film project and a 3D virtual op art project.
Herzlia is incredibly proud of all the pupils who entered the
annual Computer Olympiad. The top achievers were: Michaela
Perkel in Gr 11 with a score of 100% (only 2 participants out of
2428 in the category in SA achieved a perfect score.) Sienna
Dibowitz in Gr 9 and Benjamin Levinson in Gr 8, both with a
score of 100% (only 5 participants out of 4638 in the category
in SA achieved a perfect score.) Joshua van Tonder, Joshua Atie
and Aaron Epstein in Gr 9 each with a score of 93% (only 14
participants out of 4638 in the category in SA achieved this
score.)
Herzlia’s teachers are constantly engaging in staff development
opportunities to continue to innovate. Over 60 teachers have
already obtained their Google Educator certification upon
completing the online training that was provided by Herzlia’s
Innovation Department. Teaching staff have also been granted
access to the PurpleZA platform that provides a wide range of
pedagogy-related online certification courses. This platform
allows teachers to track their progress on their dashboard as
they are completing courses relevant to their area of expertise.
Finally, thank you to Herzlia’s Innovation and IT teams for
supporting all the pupils and staff with the use of technology
and to ensure that Herzlia remains connected whether we
teach in-person or online. We have more exciting
opportunities that await in 2022 and we can’t wait to share
these with our pupils.
It has been a difficult year to get sport up and running.
Just as we established a real flow of practices and even
some matches - it was taken away from us in a flash,
with the announcement of a harder lock down at the
end of term 2. This left us wondering whether sport
would resume during the 3rd term.
Much to our surprise, we were allowed to start practices
and matches. Of course, the excitement is tempered by
reservations about rising Covid cases in the Western
Cape.
While the effect of Covid on sport has been really
heartbreaking, we continue to do what we are able to do
and we continue to strive for excellence within the
parameters.
Herzlia would like to congratulate all those
sportsmen/women who were able to continue training
and who have excelled in their chosen sports. This takes
true commitment and dedication and we look forward
to following their successes.
Hats off to all the Sports Heads, teachers in charge of
sports and the pupils for persevering through these
trying times. Your efforts are much appreciated.
