Asiana 2019-20 Annual Report
KIPP Wonder Academy a
Dear Team and Family,
When our school year began in August 2019, none of us could have predicted how it would end.
KIPP St. Louis was celebrating our 10 Year anniversary and the opening of our sixth school, KIPP Wonder
Academy. Our third cohort of KIPP alumni was heading off to college and we were stepping back to
develop a high-powered 2025 strategic plan.
Then, in March, our country was turned upside down with the spread of COVID-19. KIPP quickly experienced
the devastation of the pandemic as colleges closed campuses, schools closed to in-person learning, and we
were forced to try and connect our 2,500 students to their teachers virtually. But, like always, the KIPP team
responded swiftly. We scrambled to bring home KIPPsters who were stranded at college without the means
to return. We worked with the City of St. Louis and a host of organizations to feed children who had relied
on daily school breakfast and lunch. Our teachers and staff mobilized to reach all our students with virtual
lessons so they could continue to learn and complete their school year. It meant printing and mailing lesson
packets to all 2,500 students while we worked to identify those who needed Chromebooks and internet
connections and then provide the necessary technology to close the digital divide for our students.
Our vision at KIPP is to ensure that all children have access to amazing schools that change their life
trajectories. The challenges our students face because of structural inequities in housing, health care
and digital access reinforce our belief that a KIPP education is key to ensuring that every child grows up
free to create the future they want for themselves and their communities. Now, more than ever, it is our
responsibility to commit to the work of supercharging our students’ educations—whether in person, virtually
or a combination of the two—and create joyful, academically challenging classrooms where all students can
learn.
I have long maintained that there is not one measure of a great school. Great schools must be excellent
at many things to achieve greatness. Therefore, we use Six Essential Questions to determine our impact:
Who are our students? Are our KIPP students staying with us? Are our students progressing and achieving
academically? Are our students climbing the mountain to and through college? Are we building a sustainable
people model? Are we building a sustainable financial model? In this report, you will see our results on each
of these indicators. Even in this unpredictable climate, we take pride in our results.
We ended our fiscal year with a positive contribution to our financial reserve, even with the costs associated
with unexpectedly closing our buildings and teaching remotely. Our KIPP alumni continue to shine—our
fourth class of KIPPsters, the Class of 2020, graduated from high school, some on Zoom and others at
makeshift drive-in venues, and headed off to colleges and universities, the military, and other post-secondary
training. They continue to make us proud! In next year’s annual report, we’ll be celebrating the first KIPP
St. Louis High School graduating class!
Thank you for your support and for helping to create a bright future for KIPPsters past, present and future.
We would not be here without you. Your support is making it possible for us to educate and improve our
region’s work force and change trajectories for families, even in the most challenging of times. With your
continued support, we can continue proving the possible for our students and our community.
Onward,
Kelly Garrett | Executive Director
Together with families and communities, we create joyful,
academically excellent schools that prepare students with the
skills and confidence to pursue the paths they choose—college,
career, and beyond—so they can lead fulfilling lives and build a
more just world.
KIPP, the Knowledge is Power Program, is a non-profit, national network of college preparatory public charter
schools educating students from educationally underserved communities and preparing them for success.
KIPP launched in St. Louis in 2009 with the founding of our flagship middle school, KIPP Inspire Academy
with 72 fifth graders. During the 2019-20 school year, we have educated 2,500 students in six schools:

QUESTION
ONE WHO ARE OUR STUDENTS?
OUR SCHOLARS
KIPP St. Louis is a charter school and therefore a choice environment. We were founded on the notion that
the students who need us the most, those who live in educationally underserved communities, will have
better outcomes if given choices about where they attend school. In 2019-20, ninety-nine percent of our
students were African American or Latino, eleven percent qualified for special education services, and
seventy percent rely on school busing.
99% AFRICAN AMERICAN/LATINO
11% RECEIVE SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICES
70% RELY ON SCHOOL BUSING
WHY CHOICE MATTERS
KIPP St. Louis serves scholars living within the City of St. Louis— in 2019-20 we educated more than 2,500
students from 33 city zip codes. We know families want the best possible education for their children.
As a charter school network, we offer students and their families a choice to “opt in” to a KIPP education.
We accept all students, including students who require Special Education services and English Language
Learners. If enrollment exceeds the number of places available, we use an impartial lottery system.
Our overarching goal is to give city students a high-quality, college-prep education, along with all of the
choices that great education provides.
QUESTION
TWO ARE OUR STUDENTS STAYING WITH US?
Naeem
KIPP Inspire Academy
STUDENTS ARE STAYING WITH KIPP ST. LOUIS
We strive to create schools where all students can grow and thrive, and where children and families want to
return each year. We closely track student retention to ensure that we are keeping our students and meeting
our mission. Prior to our school building closures in March, KIPP St. Louis had an average daily attendance of
92.6% and 78.5% of our students re-enrolled for the 2019-20 school year.
92.6% DAILY AVERAGE ATTENDANCE
78.5% RE-ENROLLEMENT RETENTION
PARENTS ARE SAYING
“I’m a diehard KIPPster. My son, Kristopher, started at KIPP Victory Academy in kindergarten. He’s now in 6th grade
at KIPP Triumph and we are here for the long haul. The structure works for our family. This is our home and village
and I appreciate everyone from the school leaders to the cafeteria workers.
KIPP is a team, striving to give kids the best education while helping them understand who they are and where
they’re going in life. There’s a diverse staff. It’s especially important to me that there are Black male instructors.
This is crucial to my son’s self-confidence and self-worth. They bring benefits to the classroom beyond content
knowledge and pedagogy. Kris understands that in a world where his value may look meaningless, his teachers are
there to motivate, educate and empower him to be the best Scholar he can be.
Every classroom is named after a college. Education is not an option in our home. It’s an outlet for a promising and
secure future. Kristopher’s dad and I went to college and our daughter is a freshman at Fontbonne. At KIPP it’s
instilled early that with hard work and determination all roads lead to college.”

ACADEMIC RESULTS
The 2019-20 school year looked like any other year at first, with holiday celebrations, Back to School nights
and a full calendar of Black History Month lessons and events. Our first class of high school juniors were
studying to take the ACT test for the first time and AP classes were offered in World History, US History,
Environmental Science, and Language and Composition.
The COVID-19 quarantine made one truth self-evident—all students need access to technology. When the
coronavirus pandemic forced schools to close in March, we mobilized to deliver learning by any means
possible. We mailed more than 2,500 lesson packets to students while putting a remote learning website
into place. We identified students who lacked either a laptop or Wi-Fi access, and distributed the technology
to them. We expanded summer school to accommodate more students and ensure that our high school
students could stay on track for graduation.
Note: Due to the pandemic, Missouri did not administer state achievement tests in 2020, therefore there are
no test results to report.
HIGHLIGHTS
• Distributed more than 600 Chromebooks to students, so they could all fully participate in virtual classes.
• Loaned more than 200 internet hotspots to students who lacked reliable internet.
• Began fundraising for and purchasing enough Chromebooks for each KIPP student, to guarantee that our
students will continue to learn, whether in virtual or in-person classes in the 2020-21 school year.

KIPP THROUGH COLLEGE (KTC)
Beginning in 9th grade, KTC counselors provide individualized support as students and families prepare to
select the best-fit college or other post-high school track. After high school, KTC advisors stay in touch
with alumni, helping them navigate academic, social, and financial challenges. Supports include: college
application strategy meetings, college campus visits and tours, financial aid planning and FAFSA
workshops, one-on-one guidance and monthly check-ins, and alumni events.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: JESSICA
Jessica, a sophomore at the University of Missouri-Columbia, planned to spend her summer as a KIPP
Federal Policy Fellowship intern on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. As with many plans, hers were upended
due to COVID. Though an in-person internship with a legislator wasn’t in the cards, KIPP helped her find an
alternative internship with The Education Trust, an organization that advocates for education equity at the
state and federal levels. This is Jessica’s second KIPP-sponsored internship; last year, she worked for the
Clark-Fox Family Foundation on an initiative to educate prosecutors and other government officials on the
effects of mass incarceration on the Black community.

EMPOWERING OUR EDUCATORS
The KIPP St. Louis team continues to grow; in 2019-20 we employed 269 staff members, 58% of whom
identify as people of color. We are committed to continuing to recruit and retain a high-quality and diverse
staff. As part of that commitment, KIPP St. Louis team members invested countless hours over the past
year working on the development of a new compensation system that ensures equity, transparency,
competitiveness, and sustainability across our organization. This effort is part of a broader Success and
Sustainability Plan; among its goals—making KIPP St. Louis a top employer in the region.
KIPP St. Louis also invests in our people by providing outstanding benefits, professional development, and
instructional resources. Teachers receive frequent coaching and feedback from supervisors, as well as
opportunities to collaborate with other teachers on their team and across KIPP St. Louis schools. We believe
the best KIPP leaders begin as KIPP teachers. With this in mind, we provide opportunities for staff members
to grow with us.
6TH ANNUAL KIPP ST. LOUIS VIRTUAL AWARDS GALA: TOTALLY TUBULAR 80s PARTY
On August 15, 2020, we hosted our 6th Annual KIPP St. Louis Awards Gala, made possible by the generous
support of The William T. Kemper Foundation. Instead of gathering in a ballroom, we gathered on Zoom to
celebrate and share our admiration for each other. Teacher retention improved for the third year in a row.
We applaud our staff and teachers for their dedication to proving what is possible in education.

KIPP COPES WITH COVID-19
safety The coronavirus pandemic turned life upside down for everyone, but
first particularly for children in school. After abruptly having to close schools in
March, our KIPP Team worked tirelessly to switch to virtual instruction—
academically first by mailing lesson packets to all 2,500 students, and then building
a remote learning website. We distributed Chromebooks and internet
excellent hotspots to students who needed them, and created online lessons to keep
learning on track.
We didn’t only deliver instruction—KIPP schools became part of a city-wide
meal distribution network. Families picked up breakfast and lunch for their
children at the schools, and those who didn’t have means to get to a meal
site were added to the KIPP CARES bus route for food delivery. When the
school year ended and we were short of staff to continue the program, the
Missouri National Guard stepped in to help, so KIPP could continue to feed
children through the summer.

CHARTER SPONSOR
KIPP St. Louis was the first charter school sponsored by Washington University in St. Louis. This unique
relationship ensures excellence in our basic operations, including educational quality, fiscal and operational
accountability and legal compliance, but more importantly, it allows KIPPsters in St. Louis access to a college
preparatory education. Washington University gives students access to programs that help them develop the
skills, experiences, and expectations necessary for college. KIPP participation in the Washington University
College Advising Corps (CAC), which complements our KTC program.
CAC gives our students access to resources that prepare them for college, including ACT preparation,
college visits and college fairs, and mentoring. For students—especially for those who are the first in their
families to attend a college or university—finding the right college and adequate financial support are key
elements to persisting and earning a degree. CAC advisors, many of whom are themselves first-generation
college graduates, are part of the reason for the program’s success. Washington University has been part of
the national CAC for six years; the program has proven benefits for students, including significantly higher
percentages of students who apply for FAFSA and other scholarships.
Madison McManus became KIPP St. Louis High School’s College Advising Corps (CAC) advisor in fall 2019,
and has signed on for the 2020-21 school year as well. Working side-by-side with KIPP Through College staff,
she’s making a difference each day in students’ lives.
“I get to work with an incredibly driven and compassionate team whose consistent
support for the students is ever inspiring. I get to see my students working in ever-
changing and challenging circumstances and prevail—we've already had our first
college acceptances come through along with scholarships! When I joined CAC, I
never imagined the extent to which I would learn and grow from everyone I worked
with, and I feel very lucky to have been assigned to KIPP.”

CLASS OF 2020 TRUNK PARTY
This wasn’t the year for a Pennant Ceremony, but the Class of 2020 still got a chance to celebrate their
achievements. On a warm afternoon in August, our KIPP alumni were invited to visit KIPP Inspire Academy,
where we could celebrate their graduation from high school and send them on their journey—to college, the
military or technical training programs.
We will continue to support our alumni as they persist on their mountain climb to and through college, career
and beyond, on their path to leading fulfilling lives. In a year unlike any other, they are entering the next phase
of their lives, ready to make their mark on the world.
