2018-19
ANNUAL REPORT
Dear Team & Family,
Cheers to TEN YEARS! KIPP St. Louis has completed our first ten years—ten years of proving the possible—
and ten years of building an amazing network of leaders, supporters, educators, alumni, families and
scholars who believe in the KIPP vision for a better future for our students.
Our vision at KIPP St. Louis is to ensure that all children have access to amazing schools that change their
life trajectories. We also believe that demographics do not determine destiny. Because of this belief, when
a student enters our schools, we get to work on super-charging their education. By creating rigorous, joyful
schools and classrooms where students love learning, we’re helping them achieve at greater levels.
The national KIPP Foundation correctly asserts that there is not one measure of a great school. Great
schools must measure many things to achieve excellence. Therefore, we use Six Essential Questions to
determine our impact: Who are our students? Are our KIPP students staying with us? Are our students
progressing and achieving academically? Are our students climbing the mountain to and through college?
Are we building a sustainable people model? Are we building a sustainable financial model? In this report,
you will see our results on each of these indicators.
We ended our fiscal year with a positive contribution to our financial reserve, even with the purchase of two
school buildings. KIPP Wonder Academy opened this summer, with its first class of kindergarten scholars
eager to grow and learn. Our KIPP alumni continue to shine – our third class of KIPPsters, the Class of
2019, graduated from high school and headed off to colleges and universities, the military, and other post-
secondary training. They continue to make us proud!
Thank you for being part of our first ten years, and for helping to create a bright future for the thousands of
KIPPsters who are still to come. We would not be here without you. Your support is educating and improving
our region’s work force and changing trajectories for families. With your continued support, we can continue
proving the possible for our students and our community.
Onward,
Kelly Garrett

Question 1 Who are our students?
6 Jace W., KIPP Inspire Academy 8th grader, has been a KIA scholar since 5th grade.
ABOUT OUR SCHOLARS
KIPP St. Louis is a charter school and therefore a choice environment. We were founded on the notion that
the students who need us the most, those who live in educationally underserved communities, will have
better outcomes if given choices about where they attend school. In 2018-19, ninety-nine percent of our
students were African American or Latino, eleven percent qualified for special education services, and
seventy percent rely on school busing.
99% 11% 100%
African American/ Receive Special Are eligible to receive free
Latino Education services and reduced school meals
WHY CHOICE MATTERS
KIPP St. Louis serves scholars living within the City of St. Louis— in 2018-19 we educated more than 2,000
students from 33 city zip codes. We know families want the best possible education for their children.
As a charter school network, we offer students and their families a choice, to “opt in” to a KIPP education.
We accept all students, including students who require Special Education services and English Language
Learners. If enrollment exceeds the number of places available, we use an impartial lottery system. Our
overarching goal is to give city students a high-quality, college-prep education, along with all of the choices
that great education provides.
APPLYING RESTORATIVE JUSTICE PRACTICES
Throughout the 2018-19 school year, KIPP school leaders and teachers participated in a series of restorative
justice workshops to learn effective methods to retain students in the classroom and reduce suspensions.
The goal of restorative justice is to shift focus from punishment to accountability, fostering dialogue between
parties to find lasting solutions to conflicts. Effective restorative practices lead to a reduction in conflict in
and out of the classroom and to better academic performance.

Question 2 Are our KIPP students staying with us?
Chassidy B., a Kindergartener at
KIPP Wisdom Academy, loves puzzles.
STUDENTS ARE STAYING WITH US
We strive to create schools where all students can grow and thrive, and where children and families
want to return each year. We closely track student retention to ensure that we are keeping our
students and meeting our mission. At KIPP St. Louis, we have an average daily attendance of 92.6%,
and 78.5% of our students re-enrolled for the 2018-19 school year.

WHAT OUR PARENTS ARE SAYING ABOUT US:
“As a parent of a KIPP graduate... I would like to thank the staff for the support my daughter DeSani has
received over the years from the school to make sure she got all she needed to succeed.
I want to express my gratitude and appreciation to Ms. Emily Lombardo for being a big support to my
daughter throughout high school. She has advocated and fought for her, she made sure my daughter has
all the resources she needed to get through high school, she has prepared her for college, taking her on
college tours, and so much more. She has made sure any and everything she can do to make sure my
daughter shows her best. She promised she would be there to support throughout her journey and she
has. She makes sure I’m always aware of what’s going on and has shown that my daughter is capable of
making decisions on her own.
The respect and love shown will always be cherished. I take pride in knowing that she will graduate
in 2020 and starting a new chapter. Thanks once again for being such a great school and giving the
students great support. Please continue and let other kids experience the same support. I am a proud,
grateful mother.”

Question 3 Are our students progressing
and achieving academically?
KIPP St. Louis High School scholars in one of our new, state-of-the art science classrooms.
10
ACADEMIC RESULTS: MISSOURI ASSESSMENT PROGRAM
Missouri introduced four new state assessments in five years, which previously made year-over-year
measurement of academic improvement difficult. The state has now adopted Missouri Learning Standards
that were developed by Missouri teachers and other stakeholders. The new standards set a higher bar, which
is reflected in more challenging, teacher-developed state assessments. We are proud of what the teachers and
stakeholder groups created.
We’re thrilled to report that KIPP St. Louis continues to be one of the highest-performing school districts
when it comes to year-over-year student growth. While there is still much work to be done to raise students’
test scores, the tests also give us valuable insights into ways to improve, in order to continue increasing
achievement over the long term.
HERE ARE SOME HIGHLIGHTS:
• KIPP St. Louis scholars are exceeding state academic growth expectations in both Math and English
Language Arts (ELA).
• By the end of 8th grade, our scholars catch up to and surpass the Missouri state average in overall academic
achievement in Math.
• In almost all grade levels, KIPP St. Louis outperforms peer districts in both English Language Arts and Math,
in many cases by a significant margin.
• 9th grade composite ACT growth ranks 2nd among all KIPP high schools across the country, ranking 1st in
Science and English, 2nd in Math, and 3rd in Reading.
Students took a virtual tour inside the human body when KIPP Triumph and 11
KIPP Inspire each got a visit from the MilliporeSigma Curiosity Cube!
Question 4 Are our students climbing the
mountain to and through college?
Kayla, KIPP St. Louis Alumna, University of Missouri—Columbia, is a current sophomore.
12
KIPP THROUGH COLLEGE
KIPP Through College (KTC) is a key component of KIPP’s commitment to help our students leave high school
ready to lead choice-filled lives. Beginning in 9th grade, KTC counselors provide individualized support to students
and families as they prepare for and select the best-fit college or other post-high school track. Even after high
school, KTC advisors stay in touch with alumni, helping them navigate the academic, social, and financial
challenges they may encounter. Supports include:
• College application strategy meetings
• College campus visits and tours
• Financial aid planning and FAFSA workshops
• One-on-one guidance and monthly check-ins
• Alumni events
STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: KAYLA
Kayla is an alumna of KIPP Inspire Academy and a 2018 graduate of Villa Duchesne Oak Hill School. She attends
the University of Missouri-Columbia, where she completed her freshman year with a 4.0 grade point average.
Kayla is in MIZZOU’s selective Pathways to Success program, aimed at assisting underrepresented students on
their path to a career in medicine.
“I had no idea of what was involved in applying and being accepted into college – I would have been lost without
the guidance of my KIPP Through College advisors. They helped me understand how to navigate the process and
understand what to expect every step along the way.”

Question 5 Are we building a sustainable

14 Award winner Skylar Schive (left) with previous year's winner Angela Jackson.
EMPOWERING OUR EDUCATORS
The KIPP St. Louis team continues to grow; in 2018-19 we employed 250 staff members, 54% of whom identify
as people of color. We are committed to continuing to recruit and retain a high-quality and diverse staff. As
part of that commitment, KIPP St. Louis team members invested countless hours over the past year working
on the development of a new compensation system that ensures equity, transparency, competitiveness, and
sustainability across our organization. This effort is part of a broader Success and Sustainability Plan; among its
goals – making KIPP St. Louis a top employer in the region.
KIPP St. Louis also invests in our people by providing outstanding benefits, professional development, and
instructional resources. Teachers receive frequent coaching and feedback from supervisors, as well as
opportunities to collaborate with other teachers on their team and across KIPP St. Louis schools. We believe the
best KIPP leaders begin as KIPP teachers. With this in mind, we provide opportunities for staff members to grow
with us.

KIPP WISDOM ACADEMY MOVES & KIPP WONDER ACADEMY OPENS
We finalized plans to move one school—KIPP Wisdom Academy—into its “forever home” and prepared to open
another—KIPP Wonder Academy, our third elementary school.
Pictured on right: KIPP Wonder Academy will add a grade level each year until it’s educating 500 scholars in
grades K-4. KIPP Wonder will move to its permanent home in the Dutchtown neighborhood of South St. Louis in
2020, after the building undergoes renovation.
Pictured below: KIPP Wisdom Academy moved to a larger school building on Grattan Street, just east of Lafayette
Square.
Finding homes for KIPP Wonder and KIPP Wisdom involved countless hours and the coordinated efforts of our
Board, Finance Committee, Regional and School staff. At the heart of our decision to open another school is our
vision that all families in St. Louis will have access to a world class network of public schools that will prepare
children with the academic skills and character traits necessary to thrive in college, careers, and in life.

WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY IN ST. LOUIS
Believing in and leading the way
Washington University in St. Louis, our charter sponsor, is instrumental in our growing success. This partnership
ensures excellence in our basic operations and allows KIPPsters immediate access to a college-preparatory
education, arming them early with the skills, experiences, and expectations necessary for college. Our
collaboration includes:
✔ Daily tutoring through the Each One Teach One program
✔ Support from the Brown School of Social Work graduate practicum students
✔ Math and science teaching support from Washington University’s Institute for School Partnership
✔ Service projects at the schools and assistance for KIPP scholars participating in field trips and co-
curricular activities on Washington University’s Danforth Campus
Our relationship with Washington University also creates extraordinary opportunities for individual KIPP
students, like KIPP St. Louis High School sophomore Irene (pictured at left), who has attended KIPP St. Louis
schools since fifth grade. Last summer, Irene was accepted, with a full scholarship, to attend Washington
University’s Pre-Engineering Institute for high school students. The three-week program gives students exposure
to diverse fields of engineering; they learn how to apply scientific, economic, and social knowledge to solve
problems, create new systems, or design a structure. To be eligible for the program, which includes living in
student housing on campus, students must have at least a B+ average.
Irene exudes the joy and confidence of a KIPP scholar. “My KIPP Through College advisors helped me apply and
I knew they were there for me if I needed anything. They’re my biggest support—after myself,” Irene said. “I was
a little scared at first—I’d never lived away from home before. Even though I was still in St. Louis, it was a whole
new experience. But I made friends with people from all over; my roommate was from Turkey.” Irene, whose
interests include business, track, and music, chose the Pre-Engineering Institute because she also loves math. “I
loved the team-building, working on independent projects. We needed to do a lot of coding. I learned coding in
5th grade, so I just dug in and did it.”
