48 Portfolio | Francesco Parchitelli MASTER'S THESIS "RESILIENT TERRITORIES" "The properties confiscated from the mafias as a tool for urban and social regeneration" THESIS SELECTED BY SIU - "Società Urbanisti Italiani" (2022) 4 The research addresses the issue of the use of assets confiscated from the mafia as a new possibility of regeneration for territories where individual structures are conceived as catalysing elements through which to launch paths of requalification of the fabric of cities, economies and social policies. The dimension of the problem of property confiscated from the mafia in Italy is substantial and manifests itself with particular force in the southern territories, with particular reference to the regions of Campania, Calabria, Apulia and Sicily. The aim of the work is to redeem territories from the state of physical, economic and social abandonment and degradation by offering new opportunities to produce living and experiencing the city. The method is based on the need to recognise redevelopment interventions as an aim (through the possibility of giving new shape to places) and the need to offer job opportunities and improve social cohesion, inclusion, redeeming here territories in which the presence of the mafias has led to conditions of economic and social depression. The case study identified is the town of Noha, an hamlet in the municipality of Galatina in the province of Lecce, where there is a confiscated property that was already the subject of a redevelopment project financed in 2009, with the objective of redeveloping it to host solidarity-based entrepreneurial activities in the field of social, cultural and environmental tourism.
