The year gone by was bittersweet with moments of highs and lows.

With heavy hearts, we bid adieu to our Director, Dr. Ajit Prasad. He was a visionary
leader, a teacher par excellence, a remarkable academician and a compassionate
human being. It is impossible to fill the void created by him. But his legacy will guide
the way for years to come. The professors and  students will always endeavour to
fulfil the motto of IIM Lucknow - "Better management towards better nation".

What sets us apart from other campuses of IIMs? We offer a diversity of courses to
students with industry experience. The students at this campus are professionals
with excellent academic background and industry experience. We, at IIM Lucknow
Noida campus, are the first IIM to initiate a niche program for sustainable
management with a purpose to produce quality managers who would help build
sustainable businesses. The course has evolved over the last few years to become
one of the most sought after programmes and a favourite among the corporate
industry for recruitment. There are other uniquely designed programmes for
entrepreneurs, working managers, mid/senior level executives and professionals

You Better Watch Out

Have you observed how often podiums deciding hugely important
issues are hugely dominated by men? I come across this situation
almost every day in my professional fraternity - Men working with
men, interested and invested in shaping masculinity of business.
There should be a well-established & easy thumb rule - the p in
'p'anel discussions stands for people and not for the phallus. But
when we find women, as the mute audience in a panel (or jury, or
board meeting, or workshop, or round table), overwhelmingly
dominated by men, it is probably not a panel but a MANel.
And interestingly, if a MANel discussion is about innovation, it's
content showcases business as usual, if it is about inclusion it is
basically exclusion, if it about future scenarios, it is certainly stuck in
the dark ages and if there is a token woman, instead, of none as is
the norm, then Congratulations! You get promoted to an early
nineteenth century. Ta daa!!! 

When I raise this subject aloud, I
come across various reactions,
some by men and to my surprise,
more by women. Some were fairly
obvious to respond to, but who
knows what is obvious anymore?

Hello everyone!

What does one do when the person is a stranger and
outsider (a "diku" which means a foreigner in the local
Mundari language) but is appalled at the condition of the
basic amenities in the village? Lives with it? Fights it?
Raises voice for the lack of amenities? Hail revolution,
eh?
But who would you slogan against? The administration,
or the people who have 'learnt to live with the situation'?
You cannot have a definite answer.
During my summer internship with Tata Trusts, I got to
stay in a village complex (it is known as the Birsa Munda
Complex) in Ulihatu, nearly 60 km away from Ranchi
(although the distance is 60 km, but the living conditions
of the common people are some generations behind that
of Ranchi's people), on the hills.
The village is a Naxal infested one (several articles on the
web had scared my parents as well as me before I
decided to visit the place). My project was in helping the
Department of Welfare (Government of Jharkhand) to
identify issues with the "model" tribal residential school   

there and help them address those issues - right from the morning assembly till the science
laboratory (which existed only in the approved plan). In order to have a better understanding of
the issues faced by the students, I proposed to my manager to allow me to stay in the school
compound for a few days. After a few rounds of discussion with the Jt. Secretary of Department of
Welfare regarding security and other arrangements that had to be made in the compound, I was
allowed to visit the place (much to the anger of my parents in general, and mother in particular).

On reaching the place, several kids could be seen loitering around with their small notebooks,
books. Adhering to my usual state of being, I started to talk to some of them. While talking to them
about why they were in the school, it gave me immense satisfaction to hear about some students'
desire to study, the desire to be "big", the desire to break the shackles of poverty (and eventually
leading to a "rich life"). Close to 6:00 PM, most kids returned to their hostel from the playground
and stayed indoors as there was no electricity. While talking to the 2 staff members who stayed on
campus (both were on deputation from another school and during my visit kept convincing me to
talk to the Secretary and get them transferred) about the power cut, they informed that there had
been no electricity in the past 10 days. To explore more, I got out of my room in the faculty
quarters with the torch lit on my phone. There was an SSB setup or SSB company, as they are
called in the Sahashtra Seema Bal, which had light beaming from its rooms. From where I stood,
the glowing SSB company and the school looked like the model or prototype or living example of
the India vs Bharat debate. As my phone's battery got drained, heading back to the guest house was
the only option. The first night ended in me surrendering in the company of darkness and
mosquitoes, who were very kind to sing lullaby which had the magical power to keep human beings
awake for nights. 

Next morning, the staff informed that the school used a diesel-powered generator to load water
into the overhead storage tanks. Since it was a costly affair, so it wasn't run every day, but only on
some days. I too tried to use as less water as I could. When I met the headmaster (who didn't stay
in the school campus but came from the district headquarters Khunti), he informed that he had
given a written complaint to the electricity department explaining the issue of power cut being
faced by the 200+ students staying in the school complex. Meanwhile, my phone's battery died.
With the classes beginning in full flow, I had some free time and I decided to take a walk of the
school complex as it was breezy outside. The headmaster too joined me and while we were
strolling, we were summoned by a tall gentleman from the SSB camp. The headmaster knew the
person and they shook hands and the man in uniform asked us to sit with him in a neatly made
make-shift office in a lawn. As we sat down, he signaled one of his guards to get "thandaa paani"
(cold water) for us. The cold water tasted better than ever and the person, for a flash of a second,
resembled Lord Vishnu (from the stories of my childhood, where Lord Vishnu used to come to help
His 'bhakta' get rid of sufferings and challenges). While talking, he asked me to introduce myself
and it seemed that he was very pleased to know that I studied at IIM Lucknow, which he said was a
dream for him and many like him (it was a dream for me too, sir).

He asked me for my number for one of his nephew who was preparing for CAT and tried to call me
for me to save his number. I told him that the phone's battery was out of juice. He asked me to get
my phone's charger and told his guard to put my phone on charge in his office. I was surprised to
see that his office had electricity and the fans and charging points, and even water coolers were
running fine. Intrigued, I asked him how come the school didn't have power while his company had
power at night (previous night) as well as day. He explained that the fault could be in one of the
phases connected to the grid. It then dawned upon me that he could help us with our situation, but
I left this thought to myself. We left his office and while returning to school, I told the headmaster
if we could take sir's help. The headmaster didn't agree with my idea and started to explain how
the government procedures took time and that the letter written by him had already been received
in the electricity department. Here, my father's experience in the paramilitary forces helped me
understand that the armed forces work on an emergency mode (24/7 availability is mandatory for
them) and any complaint by them would result in a faster resolution from the authorities. So,
without even asking the headmaster, I went to the SSB camp. I told sir to get the 3 phases checked
to ascertain if one of the phases of his electric supply was out of order.

 He got it checked and told that it was the same phase which ran to the school too, which was out of
order. Thus, the problem was clear and all we needed was a solution. I told him if he could help us
by registering a complaint about his failed phase, which when repaired will solve the school's
electricity problem too. He smiled and agreed to help. He dialed to some of the officials in the
electricity board. The official said that they will work on the issue urgently (he told the electricity
board's officer that the SSB company was unable to charge the batteries of its surveillance
equipment due to the power failure). While leaving, I took my phone which was now fully charged.
Once I got free from the school, I went back to my room to freshen up. I received a text from sir
(thanks to him, my phone was charged) if I would like to see the places around Ulihatu with his
company's personnel. I agreed and he, along with 3 of his staffs, went on a walk on the sloping road.
We discussed politics of Jharkhand, West Bengal, the beginning and state of the Naxal movement,
the condition of Ulihatu, the issues of the tribal education system in Jharkhand and several other
related topics. After nearly walking for 7 km (to & fro) we reached the complex. What I saw in front
of me was a beautiful complex which was glowing with electric bulbs, street lights lighting the
campus. Yes! After 11 long nights, it was glittering. I immediately took out my phone to capture this,

I had understood how easy it was for him to get hold of the right people who would understand the
urgency much better than the regular process of approvals and probably that is why the school
could see the light of the day (read night). While leaving the school complex after 4 days, the
students, the headmaster, and sir said that it was due to me that the school got lit. I smiled and told
that it was due to sir that the right people were informed about the issue which led to the
resolution. Thus, I didn't do much. But, as a student of business sustainability at one of India's best
B-schools, I had learnt that more than the availability of resources, it was about the judicial and
sustainable use of those resources which had the true potential to heal the society and to brighten
(literally too) their days and nights.
The incident or rather the pre and post scenarios have left a strong impact on me and will forever
remain as one of the learning experience of my life.

programme of Indian Institute of
Management Lucknow, India, 34
students of Post-Graduate
Programme (Sustainable
Management), were hosted by
Linnaeus University, Vaxjo, Sweden
from 26th Aug 2018 to 1st Sept 2018.
It successfully accomplished
intended objectives of
interdisciplinary learning, cross-
cultural exposure and observation
of the best municipal practices.
Meticulous planning and
coordination by Prof. Krushna
Mahapatra from Linnaeus
University and Prof. Ashish
Aggarwal and Prof. Kaushik
Bandyopadhyay from Indian
Institute of Management Lucknow
led to successful execution of the
foreign immersion programme.

Students experienced warm hospitality at
Youth Hostel, Evedal and Linnaeus University.
Welcome address was delivered by Prof. Ann
Charlotte Larsson, Vice Rector, Linnaeus
University. It was followed by insightful lectures
from eminent faculty members including Dr
Jorgen Fross, Prof. Michael Strand, Dr Brijesh
Mainali, Dr Peter Lerman and Prof Krushna
Mahapatra of Department of Built Environment
and Energy. These lectures helped students to
get an overview of the research and
development aspects of sustainability.
Students visited the laboratory of Department
of Built Environment and Energy, where they
were introduced to various laboratory tests in
the area of ‘wood technology’.

Apart form classroom sessions, industry and municipality visits were organized.
At Vaxjo municipality, Mr Jan Johansson gave a
presentation illustrating urban planning and
mobility strategies that had made Vaxjo-the
greenest city of Europe. Afterwards, at Waste
Recycling Station students observed ‘cradle-
cradle’ model of circular economy. At VEAB,
they observed ‘biomass-based’ power plant
and district heating system. Industry visits
included visits to Amokabel, Maleras Glasbruk,
Xylem and Electrolux, where they observed
various practices concerning sustainability such
as use of recycled raw materials, agile
operations, heat recovery system, and 3-D
printing technology. Also, an interaction with
Rickard Alm from Volvo was organized to
introduce sustainability related initiatives of
Volvo. Furthermore, students learnt about
public-transport system, cultural uniqueness of
Sweden and eco-friendly behaviour of general
population.

In the later half of the programme, students were hosted by department of Sustainable Management, Maastricht School of
Management (MSM), Netherlands. At MSM, students were offered eight hours of classroom sessions and work visits to Gulpenar
Brewer Brewery and Bisschopsmolen Maastricht. Classroom lectures were delivered by Dr Jakomijn van Wijk, Ms Mirjana Stanisic and
Dr Vincent Feltkamp. These sessions dealt with ‘sustainability and managerial priorities’, ‘stakeholder network’, ‘sustainability and
joint obligation’, and ‘developing sustainable supply chain’. During work visits, students developed understanding of contract
farming, local supply chain and its significance in reducing operation inefficiencies.
In the final phase of the programme, students visited Amsterdam. There they observed sustainable city transport system, canal
