Nature & You 6

By Gabriella Giammalva

Nature, like most things, is all around us. It helps us breathe, function, gives us
something to look at, provides animals and us food, and makes up the main part of
our earth. So why aren't we doing more to help our earth?

"I just think that there are so many people out there who don?t think this is a big
problem. I think it definitely is. When Notre Dame caught on fire, so people were
there to give billions and billions of dollars. I?ve read that all that money that went
towards that could have gone to save the great barrier reef, like why wouldn?t we
want to try and save that?If all these animals are going to extinction and all these
plants are going to extinction, they help us, they help the world function, so I really
think we need to get on that before it?s too late for us to do anything," 11th grade
high school student Anna Wagner said.

Everyone can do their part and help the earth. They don't have to be extravagant
acts, just ones that make a difference and impact our earth in a good way.

"Little things like using metal straws, not throwing your trash on the street,
cleaning up your stuff when you go to the beach, carpooling or if you have an
electric car, just recycling. There are a bunch of little things you can do [to help the
earth]. I think I have done good things and bad things, I'm definitely not doing a lot
to change my bad ways to make them good. I try to recycle and car pooling. I
would like to use a metal straw. I try not to litter. I try to do good things but I know I
do bad things to the earth too," Wagner said.

The biggest contributers of our earth's depletion take place everywhere in the
world, everyday.

"Human ignorance is the earth?s leading cause of depletion because people who
actually have the ability to do something about it don?t care and aren?t listening to
the people who know what they are talking about, which is embarrassing as a
whole. It?s really just embarrassing. It?s really the only word I can think of to
describe this climate change," 10th grade high school student Stella Moline said.

Trees and plants aren't the only things humans are harming by their everyday
activities, animals are in great danger as well. Plastic and trash is put into our
oceans everyday and it kills many of our earth's species.

"It?s so heartbreaking, honestly so heartbreaking because these animals help us
survive and they help us get rid of bad things. It?s so easy to fix the problem if you
just clean up after yourself. There are trash cans at the beach, just put it in the trash
can. It?s so easy to fix," Wagner said.
