1964 Warrior

Walnut (Iowa) Community School yearbook for the 1963-1964 school year.

Foreword

The 1964 Annual Staff sincerely hopes that this annual will be cher-
ished by all, not just the graduates, but in memory of the graduating
class. The graduates will remember all their days at Walnut High. Also,
many other things will be remembered such as plays, friends, problems,
and proms.

Now, we have to leave by the front steps and step out into the wide
world of our own. Whatever our world may bring to each one of us, we
hope that a glance at these pages in the Warrior will bring many memo -
ries of our happy days at Walnut High.

We, the senior class, dedicate our 1964 annual to

have supported our class, and helped to make all our
endeavors possible and successful. We extend our grate-
ful appreciation to each and every one of you.

"As the twig is bent so is the tree inclined."
A child should be taught, first, the value of character. Reputation is made later on in

life, but character is formed in childhood by doing the correct thing in the correct way. A
child's school days have a great influence on his later life, for it is then that the life foun-
dation is laid. If he has learned early to think clearly, and judge fairly, he has a good start
in life. Taking for granted that up to twenty-one a young man has had the proper training,
he is then ready to build. He who has learned the value of character, of physical fitness, of
e conomy and thrift, has mastered the le ssons which will stand him in good stead and give
him a decided advantage over his brother who is less soundly prepared.

Mr. McIntosh

,.

This is the time when all phases of life are being carefully scrutinized. People are
asking, "Is it worth- while ?," "Does it pay?," "What is the use?" and so on. Even such a
thing as universal education in this_ land of democracy is being questioned, and we have
thought all along that universal education was essential to self-government.

What of education today? What does it mean for young men and women graduating
from our schools this year 1964? Shall educational advantages be lessened, or shall greater
suess be laid upon certain features of our educational program? Soon you will be called
upon to take part in the conuoversy.

Education does play a prominent part in national and in individual life. Most nations of
the earth are placing more stress on education as a means of national progress and develop-
ment.

Educa tion today calls for thinking: for thinking things through before acting. I hope
that each one of you graduating seniors have received this ability from your high school
education.

What does education mean to you graduates? I am quite certain that it means tools of
progress in your hands. You will take these tools and with them you will build your lives.
You are building every day you live, and you are living as you build.

This year the Juniors really got the l ead out of their pants. We may have moved slow be-
fore but this year things really flew.

For Homecoming our float "Mash Menlo" took third prize. Our representatives in the
Homecoming royalty were Irene Thiessen and Steven Bees.

Our class play "You Can 't Take It With You" really put a large sum of that nice "green
stuff" in our class treasury. We would like to thank Mr . Lebeck and Miss Elsensohn for the won -
derful help they gave us to make our play a success.

Our Student Council representatives this year were Connie Thomsen and Roger Hansen.
Our c lass was also very well represented in sports, declam, and music.
The Junior - Senior Prom was exciting for a ll of us ; we 'll never forget it.
We would like to thank our sponsors for all their help.

Junior High Notes

The 1963-64 school year has been qu ite successful for the Juni or
High. In the magazine campaign. the seventh graders won a lt hough
the eighth graders did quite we ll, too. For Homecoming the Jun ior Hi gh
made a float entitled "Somewhere Over the Goalposts.·· T here were
two parties, one with a "'Thanksgiving·· theme and the ot he r 1v i t h an
"April Showers" theme. Two or three other parties we re held b y var-
ious students in the class. Although the basketball teams didn't do too
well this year they had a lot of spirit. The girls didn ' t win any games
and the boys won only one, that being the last game of the season .
Along with several other activities the Junior Hi gh has had quite an
exciting and successful year.

These are the students who will make up the graduating class of 1976. Although twelve ..
years seems like quite a while, the time flies very fast. If you think these students have worried
expressions on their faces now, wait until 1976 and watch their worried expressions, when the y
leave school a nd step out into the world to live the ir individua l lives.

To the Graduates:

It is my hope that your years in Walnut High have been as enjoyable
to you as my years here have been to me. It has been a pleasure to work
with you and I am proud to see this group go out in search of its fortune.

We have guided you as far as we can and now the future is yours to
do with it what you please. I hope all of you will find happiness in your
chosen vocations. However, remember that happiness is not always meas-
ured in monetary terms, much happiness is found in a life of service -
serve God, serve your country, serve your fellow man and then serve your-
self.

Good luck to each one of you, and remember the welcome mat is
always out for you to visit us whenever you so desire.

Mr. Kelly
