TIDBITS® BRINGS YOU
MONEY MATTERS
by Kathy Wolfe
Author Jonathan Swift said “A wise person
should have money in their head, but not
in their heart.” With that wisdom in mind,
Tidbits digs deep for these facts on money
and riches.
• It took nearly 300 years for the U.S.
government to accrue a national debt of
$1 trillion, a figure reached in 1982. Four
years later in 1986, that figure had doubled
to $2 trillion, and doubled yet again to $4
trillion by 1992. At the end of November,
2021, the national debt had reached nearly
$30 trillion, about $88,000 per U.S. citizen.
• In mid-2021, credit card debit in the U.S.
exceeded $998 billion. That’s an average
of about $5,100 per cardholder. Baby
boomers had an average exceeding $6,000
each, while Gen Xers (age 40 to 55) average
upwards of $7,000.
• Where does the U.S. Government spend
some of the budget? A few years back, it
gave an $856,000 grant to scientists to
study how three captive mountain lions
would perform on a treadmill. It took
eight months before the animals were even
“comfortable on the treadmill,” followed by
more research to determine that mountain
lions “do not have the aerobic capacity for
sustained high-energy activity.”

• When we refer to “plastic” money, we mean our
credit cards. But in Canada, plastic currency is
now the standard. In 2011, that nation replaced
the cotton and paper banknotes with bills made
from a synthetic polymer. There are numerous
benefits to plastic money, including its
longevity. It lasts from two to five times longer
than paper money and is much more difficult
to counterfeit. It works better in vending
machines and ATM’s. It’s waterproof, doesn’t
absorb perspiration or oils, and is less likely
to spread disease, making it a much cleaner
option than its paper counterpart. Canada isn’t
the only country doing this – at least 20 others
have made the change to plastic.
• The first ATM came along in 1963, installed in
New York City.

OUT OF THIS WORLD:
THE MOON ROVER
Tidbits invites you to climb aboard the Moon
Rover and learn the facts about this historic
vehicle.
• When the astronauts from three Apollo moon-
landing missions reported how tiring and
disorienting it was to walk around the moon’s
cratered terrain, while gathering hundreds
of pounds of moon rocks, NASA engineers
devised a solution. The Lunar Roving
Vehicle, LRV for short, and nicknamed the
Moon Buggy, was contracted to Boeing for
development. NASA engineers had to design
a lightweight buggy that could fold up to a
size that could fit inside the lunar module. The
result was a vehicle about the size of a Lincoln
Continental, but folded up like a lawn chair to
less than the size of a Volkswagen Beetle.
• The vehicle was developed in just 17 months,
with an original cost estimate of $19 million.
The LRV ended up costing double that. Four
were built, one each for Apollo 15, 16, and 17,
and one for spare parts.
• To keep it lightweight, the buggy was
constructed primarily of aluminum. It was
powered by two 36-volt silver zinc batteries.
Each of its eight wheels, made of woven
piano wires, was independently powered by a
quarter-horsepower electric motor. At 10 feet
(3 m) long and 6 feet (1.8 m) wide, its final
weight was 462 lbs. (210 kg) on Earth, which
was 77 lbs. (35 kg) on the Moon. Ground
clearance was 14 inches (35.6 cm).
• The rover’s maximum load was 1,080 lbs.
(490 kg), which included two astronauts and
their equipment, along with any lunar samples
they collected. Although it was designed for
a maximum speed of 8 mph (13 km/hr), on
the last mission, Apollo 17, Eugene Cernan
recorded a speed of 11.2 mph (18.0 km/h).

THE MOON ROVER (continued):
• The first rover was carried aboard Apollo 15,
landing on the Moon on July 30, 1971, two years
after Neil Armstrong’s historic walk. Astronauts
David Scott and James Irwin spent more than 18
hours on the Moon, traveling 17.25 miles (27.76
km) in 3 hours and 2 minutes of driving time as
they collected 170 lbs. (77 kg) or lunar dust and
rocks.
• LRV-2 was launched with Apollo 16 on April,
16, 1972, landing on the moon four days later.
Astronauts John Young and Charles Duke gathered
up 209 lbs. (94.8 kg) of samples during three
excursions in the rover, traveling 16.5 miles (26.55
km) in 3 hours and 26 minutes of driving time.
They ventured 2.8 miles (4.5 km) from the Lunar
Module on their outings.
• LRV-3, the final buggy, was aboard Apollo 17
when it was launched on December 7, 1972, the
last mission to send humans to the Moon. Eugene
Cernan and Harrison Schmitt covered a total
distance of 22.3 miles (35.89 km) in 4 hours and 26
minutes of driving time. The mission brought back
243 lbs. (110 kg) of lunar samples when it splashed
down on December 19.
• All three of NASA’s lunar rovers were left behind
on the Moon near the landing sites of the Lunar
Modules. The buggies’ final mission was to film
the Module and the crew as they blasted off into
space for their return trip to Earth.
• For all the success of the LRV’s, they weren’t
the first rovers to successfully land on the lunar
surface. The Soviets had rocketed the Lunokhod
I aboard an unmanned spacecraft, Luna 17, in
November, 1970, and for 10 months, the vehicle,
driven by remote-control operators in the Soviet
Union, roamed the surface for 6 miles (10 km)
transmitting data and imagery back to Earth.
