Schultz has plans. “There are many outreach opportunities that we have not been good at [developing]. I want to reintroduce outreach to communities including the Haitian and Caribbean communities.” In October, the department started a Hispanic Officers’ Association. It joins the Black Officers’ Association and the LGBTQ and the LGBTQ Liaison Unit. Currently, the LGBTQ Liaison Unit has 12 members and Schultz wants that to grow to between 25-50. Schultz, a graduate of the FBI National Academy and the Police Executive Research Forum’s Senior Management Institute for Police, is making sure other officers have experience to deal with hate crimes. “We are going to start sending officers with specific hate crimes training to the scenes of reported hate crime so that we document it correctly. We also want to get the victim services immediately to deal with the trauma they just went through.” Schultz is committed to curbing hate crimes and wants the community to know they are seen, heard and, most importantly, understood. “The crime is going to be fully reported and investigated to the fullest extent.” FORT LAUDERDALE POLICE NAME OUT CHIEF William “Bill” Schultz has more than 23 years of experience in law enforcement, has led innovations in the Fort Lauderdale Police Department (FLPD), and is a proud member of the LGBTQ community. Now he is leading the department. “I’m just so happy to openly represent the LGBTQ community as a chief of police in South Florida,” he said. He officially started the job on Nov. 6. Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis, himself also LGBTQ, says he looks forward to working with Schultz and improving the department. “Bill Schultz has been an integral part of our city’s law enforcement for over two decades, and his dedication and expertise have earned him this well-deserved position,” Trantalis said. “His extensive experience, including various assignments and leadership roles, reflects his unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of our community.” Schultz has a big job ahead of him. He becomes the fifth person to hold the job in five years. He says his first goal is getting staffed up. “Hopefully in six months, you will find we’ve filled our vacancies. We need to be full staff.” HEADING OFF HATE Hate crimes are on the rise nationally and in Florida. At the moment, anti arab and anti-Semitic hate crimes are fueled by the terrorist attack on Israel by Hamas. There are also hate crimes in other minority communities, especially among trans citizens. Welcoming By Kennedy McKinney OUT ABROAD TAIWAN PRESIDENTIAL FRONTRUNNER JOINS PRIDE MARCH ASIA R oughly 180,000 people marched in East Asia’s largest Pride march. Vice President Lai Ching-te joined the march, making him the most senior government leader ever to attend. “On this road, the [Democratic Progressive Party] has always been together with everyone. Equal marriage is not the end - it’s the starting point for diversity. I will stand steadfast on this path,” said Ching-te, according to Reuters. He also thanked those who have worked to support equality and the legalization of same-sex marriage. According to Reuters, this comes before Taiwan’s presidential and parliamentary elections in January where Ching-te leads the opinion polls. VATICAN SYNOD ENDS WITHOUT CLARITY ON LGBTQ STANCE EUROPE T he month-long Vatican meeting regarding the future of the Roman Catholic Church ended with no clarity on where the church stands regarding the LGBTQ community, despite it being one of their main topics of discussion. According to Reuters, at the end of the session, the body released a document with 81 paragraphs that received at least two-thirds approval. The report did not take an explicit stance on the LGBTQ community, only saying, “In different ways, people who feel marginalized or excluded from the Church because of their marriage status, identity or sexuality, also ask to be heard and accompanied.” Reuters reported that Synod participants felt a “deep sense of love, mercy and compassion” for those who feel hurt or neglected by the Church but failed to call for greater inclusion. The executive director of New Ways Ministry, Francis DeBernardo, said the report “greatly disappoints” individuals who want a more positive result from the Synod. DeBernardo said in a statement that it is “important for the Catholic Church to live up to its best ideals of being an enlarged tent where all are welcome, all are respected, and all are treated equally.” Francis DeBernardo. JOHANNESBURG PRIDE MARCHES FOR LGBTQ UGANDANS AFRICA Over 20,000 people marched in Johannesburg to celebrate pride and emphasize their support for LGBTQ communities whose relationships are now criminalized. “Our intention today is to march for Uganda ... for LGBT communities in Africa that can’t march for themselves,” said organizer Kaye Ally, according to Reuters. She continued, “...That hunger for Pride, as well as all the happenings in Africa, has really amplified the need for us to take to the streets and to come out in all our flamboyancy and assert our authenticity.” This is the city’s first Pride event since the COVID-19 pandemic. He is one of the first recipients of the Health and Support Services Pride Scholarship program, funded by Latinos Salud. “The scholarship allows me to keep growing, learning, and evolving in my life and career. It is also an opportunity to find and build community among those who relate to the same life paths and shared experiences,” he said. Scholarships for juniors and seniors are up to $5,000 while freshmen and sophomores are eligible for $2,500. Rueda is in his last year at FIU where he’s studying international relations. “As an immigrant, Latino, and gay man, it is important to embrace those things that make us different but also bring people together, and I think that is what the scholarship represents to me,” he said. Applicants wrote essays on connecting with the community now and in the future. The scholarship program is Latino Photo courtesy of Boris Rueda. Michael Góngora remains in the running for Miami Beach mayor, and Damian Pardo is one step closer to the District 2 seat on the City of Miami Commission. “Today, we stand on the precipice of a truly transformative moment for our city, and it’s all because of the voters,” said Pardo, a financial adviser and longtime LGBTQ activist. “This election is a testament to the collective power of our shared vision for a better Miami where residents dictate Miami’s future, not City Hall’s special interests or commissioners who are bought and paid for.” In an eight-candidate field, Pardo got 1,872 votes (26%) to finish second behind Sabina Covo, the incumbent commissioner who garnered 2,782 votes (39%). 12 • 11.9.2023 Why choose between substance and style when you can have both? The two collide once again at the annual Galleria Fort Lauderdale’s BBX Capital Men of Style. The event features 12 very stylish men from South Florida stylin’ and profilin’, each for a personal cause. One of this year’s contestants is Alfredo Olvera, a state committeeman for Broward County Democrats and former president of the Dolphin Dems. He will be representing the Pride Center. “The Pride Center does so much for the LGBTQ+ community in Broward County, and this year we are celebrating 30 years of service,” he said. “We provide a welcoming, safe space, an inclusive home to everyone in the LGBTQ+ community and our allies. Our dedication creates a positive impact in the lives of the people we serve. So for me, it is such an honor to have been selected to represent The Pride Center at this event.” Presented by Signature Grand and CAN Community Health, the event raises lots of money for community events. Last year they set the record of $310,000 for 12 organizations. Olvera, who is the Director of the Board at Pride Center as well as a realtor, is always perfectly dressed for every occasion. Whether it’s shorts and a cool shirt for a day of voter registration or a formal gala, his style is always on point. “When it comes to catching my eye in the world of fashion, it’s all about a combination of quality and uniqueness. Clothes and accessories need to tell a story, evoke emotion, and make a statement. I look for pieces that are not just trendy, but also timeless, but most importantly, they need to fit my personality and allow me to express my style.” All 12 men will have a stylist, and Olvera says he won’t know what he’s wearing until a day or two before the event. “All the participants have a unique opportunity to fundraise for the organization they represent. I am standing out by reaching out to all my friends and supporters of The Pride Center to ask them to participate by either buying a ticket to attend the event or a ticket to vote. Ultimately, the organization, and their Man of Style that fundraises the most will be the winner.” The event is Nov. 30, at 6 p.m. at the Galleria Mall in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets are $150 and include valet parking and are available through the participating charities and online at https://rb.gy/w7y2a1. Online voting is $25 per vote. The Man of Style and his respected charity that sells the most tickets and secures the most online votes will be recognized during the event with an additional $1,000 contribution. The days-long rampage resulted in the deaths of over 1,300 Jewish men, women, children and infants. Video taken by Hamas killers reveal their singular intent, to murder as many Jews as they could. To add to the tragedy, Hamas terrorists captured over 200 Jewish civilians as hostages, including babies and an elderly Holocaust survivor. OUTSFL.COM PRIORITIZING INTIMACY DURING THE UPCOMING HOLIDAY SEASON AS CO-OWNERS OF A BOUTIQUE, MY PARTNER AND I FIND THE HOLIDAY SEASON OVERWHELMINGLY BUSY. WE’RE PASSIONATE ABOUT OUR BUSINESS, BUT THE INCREASED WORKLOAD TAKES A TOLL ON THE TIME WE HAVE FOR EACH OTHER, OFTEN LEAVING US FEELING MORE LIKE BUSINESS PARTNERS THAN LIFE PARTNERS. HOW CAN WE BALANCE THE SEASONAL RUSH WITH MAINTAINING THE INTIMACY AND CONNECTION IN OUR RELATIONSHIP? The holiday season on its own can be filled with non-stop activities and taking care of other people but then adding in a demanding job or owning a business together, it can definitely feel overwhelming. The scenario you’re facing is a common plight for entrepreneurial couples, especially during the holiday season when business demands can overshadow personal connections. I see this in my practice among entrepreneurs but also among couples that work 9-5 jobs and are juggling a lot of personal demands. It’s crucial to remember that the health of your relationship can significantly impact the health of your business. Here are some strategies to help you get through this holiday season while feeling engaged and connected to your partner. The first step is to acknowledge that your relationship is the cornerstone of your business/life. Without a strong partnership, the business or family could suffer. It can be helpful to schedule regular check-ins with each other, not about work, but about how you’re feeling and what you need from each other emotionally. These moments of vulnerability can strengthen your bond. Second, establish clear work-life boundaries. Decide on a time when the workday ends, and personal time begins. This might mean turning off business phones or stepping away from the work area if you work from home. Boundaries help in compartmentalizing your roles as business partners and life partners. Next, take the time to celebrate your business achievements together. Whether it’s hitting a sales target or receiving positive customer feedback, acknowledging these Photo via Unsplash. If you don’t own a business together, use this same principle to celebrate each other’s achievements at work or in life. Maybe you or your partner hit an important achievement in their hobby or they finally solved a problem they have been working on for a while. Take the time to acknowledge it and celebrate it, even if it feels insignificant. Find small ways to integrate shared, non-work-related activities into your daily routine. It could be as simple as a morning walk, preparing a meal together, or setting aside time in the evening to unwind and talk about your day. This intentional time is incredibly important for maintaining connection. It’s important to remember that the holiday season won’t last forever, and to plan for downtime afterward. Book a weekend getaway or a staycation where the focus is on resting and enjoying each other’s company without the interruption of work or other obligations. It’s also important to support each other’s need for individual space and self-care. Encourage your partner to engage in activities that rejuvenate them, and ensure you do the same. This individual growth contributes to a healthier, more balanced relationship. The holiday season is indeed a test of balance and resilience for couples. By implementing some of these strategies, you can ensure that your relationship not only survives the holiday rush but also comes out stronger. Remember, the life your building is a testament to your partnership. QUEERLY BELOVED

18 • 11.9.2023 WITNESS INTIMIDATION IS NOT FREE SPEECH During Donald Trump’s first impeachment over his attempt to extort Ukraine funding until President Zelensky “found” dirt on Joe Biden, Trump threatened the source of information about the incident. Trump said in a speech that whoever had leaked the information about his discussion with Zelensky was like a spy, and that “in the old days” spies were “dealt with differently.” Threatening someone who dared to spill was attempted intimidation, plain to see, a pattern Trump continued throughout his term, and after he lost the presidency. Last week, he publicly signaled to a pending key witness in the election interference case, former Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, leading Judge Chutkan to re-impose her gag order. Until it was stayed again by the Court of appeals, Trump was barred anew from targeting court staff and witnesses, which he claims violates his First Amendment rights. Trump, who prefers to fight his legal battles in the more easily manipulated court of public opinion, called Chutkan’s gag order “another partisan knife stuck in the heart of our Democracy by Crooked Joe Biden, who was granted the right to muzzle his political opponent…” Appellate argument on the gag order is set for Nov. 20. SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS OF FREE SPEECH IN JUDICIAL PROCEEDINGS Courts have long been expected to protect their proceedings from outside interference in order to ensure a fair trial. In 1946, before social media, SCOTUS warned against “trial by newspaper” eroding jurors’ impartiality with an “undertow of extraneous influence.” Although Trump is using his criminal indictments to politically fundraise, with the ultimate legal strategy of pardoning himself (or making the rule of law irrelevant) if he is re-elected, legal trials are not like elections to be won through the use of public media and extraneous statements. Litigants are often prohibited from making public statements about a pending case because their statements can influence potential jurors. Statements that present a threat, incite violence, or solicit criminal acts are outside the protection of the First Amendment, whether they are connected to a legal proceeding or not. Although Trump has not been charged with inciting the J6 violence at the capital, his “fight like hell, or Photo via Adobe. you’re not going to have a country anymore” speech on the ellipse walked right up to the line of incitement, a line he continually taunts to encourage political violence. Finally, public speech meant to intimidate witnesses or influence their testimony is not protected by the First Amendment either. Under federal law at 18 U.S. Code § 1512, whoever uses the threat of physical force with intent to influence a witness’ testimony in an official proceeding can be imprisoned up to 20 years. Although threats are conveyed through “speech,” the First Amendment yields here because attempted witness intimidation is attempted obstruction of justice. TRUMP’S MARK MEADOWS POST CROSSED THE LINE After learning that Meadows was granted immunity in the election interference case, Trump posted: I don’t think Mark Meadows would lie about the Rigged and Stollen (sic) 2020 Presidential Election merely for getting IMMUNITY [but]… after being hounded like a dog for three years, told you’ll be going to jail for the rest of your life, your money and your family will be forever gone … If you say BAD THINGS about that terrible “MONSTER,” DONALD J. TRUMP, we won’t put you in prison, you can keep your family and your wealth, and, perhaps, if you can make up some really horrible “STUFF” [about] him, we may very well erect a statue of you... Some people would make that deal, but they are weaklings and cowards, and so bad for the future of our Failing Nation. I don’t think that Mark Meadows is one of them, but who really knows? Trump, who previously referred to Meadows as a “great chief of staff” now fears him, and is hedging his bets. His post simultaneously discredits Meadow’s expected testimony, suggests Meadows will lie, invites Meadows to remain in Trump’s good graces, and disparages witnesses who testify against him as “weaklings, cowards” and enemies of the nation. TRUMP’S PAST STATEMENTS HAVE LED TO THREATS AND HARASSMENT Prior to the Meadows post, Judge Chutkan heard undisputed testimony that Trump’s public statements had led to threats and harassment against people, which Trump’s counsel called “totally irrelevant.” There’s nothing more relevant to a witness than his life, and there’s nothing more important to the administration of justice than witnesses unafraid to speak. Although political speech is the most carefully protected speech under centuries of constitutional interpretation, ultimately, the First Amendment yields because justice under the rule of law is far more important than politics. 20 • 11.9.2023 LOVE VS. PRIVILEGE Normally, when corresponding with someone new, I’ll sign off, “With best wishes.” The second e-mail is signed “With warm regards.” The third exchange moves to “With warmest regards,” and finally, I write, “Love, Brian.” This shakes some people up because the word “love” represents so many feelings, from “I like you a lot,” to “We’re at a very intimate level.” My friend Hayley Evans, with whom I do a bimonthly podcast, said she now uses the word “privilege” rather than “love.” It’s a privilege to have you read this post. I don’t love you for doing so, but I’m very grateful for your time and attention. Ray has heard me tell him “I love you” every day for over 47 years, but the meaning might not always be the same. What I have tried to communicate more recently is how much I admire and appreciate all that he is and has done. “You’re an amazingly talented man.” “Ray can do anything, from electrical to plumbing.” “Thank you for handling the finances. I always know I can forward anything to you, and you’ll handle it.” What I really want Ray to know is what a great privilege it has been, and is, to have him as my mate for most of my life. What an extraordinary gift that is. Ray gets just one spin of the wheel, and he’s put all of his chips on me. Yes, that’s deep, abiding love, but it’s also an amazing privilege. My dear friend, Sister Jeannine Gramick, co-founder of New Ways Ministry, a group focused on Catholics who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender, just recently had a private audience with Pope Francis. She was in Rome for a Synod where the church is getting input from a variety of sources on such issues as the ordination of women, a married priesthood, and blessing gay unions. I wrote to Jeannine that it was a privilege for her to meet the pope, and to feel his support, but it was also a privilege for the pope to spend time with Sr. Jeannine. Jeannine and I started our ministry to straight and gay people about 50 years ago. She did so within the church, and I did so outside the guardrails of Rome. She’s a straight nun who used to teach college math. After meeting gay Catholic people and hearing their stories, she changed her life focus, and, as a result, was forced out of her religious order. But the Sisters of Loretto welcomed her. Pope Benedict XVI banned her from speaking in any Catholic facility, and she received hate mail and threats. Yet, she persevered. She’s a hero of our movement, and the pope was privileged to meet her. Jeannine might have told Pope Francis “I love you,” but they each might have interpreted the word differently. To say, though, “It’s a great privilege meeting you,” is quite clear in its meaning. My life is a privilege. CULTURE OPINION Brian McNaught THE WISE SNOWY OWL Photo via Unsplash. GOLDEN GIRLS POP-UP KITCHEN 350 NW 24TH ST., MIAMI BUCKETLISTERS.COM Picture it, Miami 2023! The Golden Girls Kitchen, a dining experience based on the popular television series, has opened as a pop-up restaurant in Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood. The Golden Girls Kitchen whisks guests the moment they walk through the doors into the world of this endearing fan favorite. The experience jet sets fans back to the 1980s, transporting them into the world of their favorite golden girls. The restaurant, inspired by the iconic show, comes to Miami after experiencing massive success as a popup experience in Beverly Hills, New York City, San Francisco, and Chicago. The Golden Girls Kitchen is a fast-casual restaurant with an emphasis on (you guessed it) desserts. Every ticket purchase includes a reserved seat, a guaranteed window of time to dine, a choice of entree, and, of course, cheesecake, all served by a lovable Shady Pines waiter. The menu invites guests to nosh on the likes of Sophia’s Lasagna Al Forno, plus other menu items such as The Lanai: a Cuban sandwich, Blanche’s Georgiastyle cookie, and the bacon lettuce potato sandwich, with many vegetarian and vegan options. Perhaps most importantly, there will be cheesecake in a variety of flavors. If you want to upgrade your dessert, try the Spierheoven Krispies, which includes strawberry cheesecake and chocolate ice cream. A drag brunch featuring top local performers will also be featured. Additionally, the pop-up will come complete with a variety of iconic photo moments for fans to play in the world of Dorothy, Rose, Blanche, and Sophia. Cozy up to the kitchen table, grab some sun on the lanai, or step into Blanche’s boudoir (Why not? Everyone else has!). Take a spin through Shady Pines on your way to the gift shop, no layover in St. Olaf required, featuring a range of brand-new Golden Girls merchandise. The concept is the brainchild of Bucket Listers, the fast-growing brand behind the popular Miami Bucket List known for nostalgic pop-up phenomena such as Saved by the Max, Good Burger, The Malibu Barbie Café, and The Family Guy Rick Karlin HOT DISH HENRY’S SANDWICH STATION permanently closed its doors. It was an immediate hit soon after opening in Flagler Village in 2017. Then in 2021, without fanfare or explanation, the entire Flagler Village neighborhood was sold. In Sept. 2022, Henry’s relocated to the city’s Sistrunk Marketplace food hall across the street and sales dropped dramatically. Last month the restaurant closed without notice, and its website, Facebook, and Instagram pages were abruptly taken down. The restaurant’s owner Marc Falsetto said that poor sales didn’t justify keeping the operation open, although he said he may reopen at another location. POMPANO BEACH GREEN MARKET will re-open with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Nov. 11. The market will take place the second Saturday of the following month, starting Dec. 9 through the end of the year. In 2024, it will expand to the second and fourth Saturday of each month through April 27 at Pompano Beach Cultural Center, 50 W Atlantic Blvd. MORIKAMI GARDENS AND MUSEUM will offer tea ceremony classes on Sundays, Dec. 3, and Dec.17. Beginners' classes will be held from 10:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m., intermediate level from 1-3 p.m. The cost is $55 for Morikami members and $60 for others. Advance registration is required at morikami.org. 26 • 11.9.2023 THE PLAY’S THE THING FOR PLAYWRIGHT DAN CLANCY T heatergoers in South Florida, New York, and across the globe, for that matter, know how fortunate we are to have playwright Dan Clancy in our midst. His play, “The Timekeepers,” took home multiple Carbonell Awards in 2013. Clancy’s play “Middletown,” with its revolving cast of stage and screen stars, has been delighting audiences for years. “108 Waverly,” with book and lyrics by Clancy and music by Lynn Portas, runs through Dec. 10 at Plays of Wilton at The Foundry. Directed by Bruce Linser, “108 Waverly” is a musical about two male couples, Brian (Jonrich Cook) and Matthew (Dylan Knight Weaver) in 1928, and Robby (Tim Canali) and Lee (Jong Sang Rheu) in 1998, navigating gay life in the same West Village apartment, 70 years apart. Dan was kind enough to make time for an interview in November 2023. Photo courtesy of George Wentzler. ENTERTAINMENT THEATER Gregg Shapiro AN ALPINE SYMPHONY NOV 17 – 18 at Adrienne Arsht Center DENÈVE with members of the New World Symphony Tickets at arshtcenter.org BF23-AD-An Alpine Symphony-OUT South Florida-10x5.3.indd 1 10/27/23 12:01 PM GREGG SHAPIRO: What is the significance of the address 108 Waverly? DAN CLANCY: When I started writing the piece, I knew I wanted the setting to be in Greenwich Village where I lived for 30 years. I chose “Waverly” for two reasons: Julius’, which is one of the oldest, if not the oldest gay bar in New York, is on Waverly Place; the second reason is that “Waverly” is very easy to rhyme with. GS: When was the first production? DC: The first production was in Queens Theatre in the Park in 2001. GS: How many productions have there been? DC: “108 Waverly” has had five productions: Queens Theatre in the Park, Palm Springs, Chicago, the New York City Gay Fest, and Tel Aviv. GS: The year 1928 was 95 years ago and 1998 was 25 years ago. What was your intention for setting “108 Waverly” during those years? DC: I selected 1928 because there are several books written about gay life in the 1920s, and I used them as references. I also wanted it to take place before the Crash of 1929. I chose 1998 because I began writing the piece then, and also because the “cocktail” that finally had an effect on fighting HIV was approved in 1997 - and this figures into the story of the 1998 couple. GS: Did you always envision “108 Waverly” as a musical? DC: Lynn Portas and I were looking for a new project. When I mentioned the idea of this play, she was excited about composing music from two different time periods. GS: What makes Lynn Portas a good collaborator? DC: Lynn is a brilliant composer. We met when teaching at the same school more than thirty years ago. I have no musical talent - non-singer. I write the lyrics and she sets them to music, and so makes them memorable.

28 • 11.9.2023 A ward-winning cartoonist and graphic novelist Roz Chast has a knack for putting a smile on people’s faces in record time. Her cartoons in The New Yorker, which have been delighting readers of the magazine for 45 years, are as distinctive as they are memorable. Her numerous books, including 2014’s National Book Critics Circle Award and Kirkus Prizewinning “Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant?” should be on everyone’s bookshelves, if they aren’t already. Chast’s new book, the wonderful “I Must Be Dreaming” (Bloomsbury, 2023), is as dreamy as the title suggests. Dedicated “to the Dream District of our brains,” Chast shares her own dreams – recurring, lucid, cartoon-idea, and body horror, among others – giving us plenty to ponder, and often, laugh about. Roz generously made time for an interview about the book. GREGG SHAPIRO: In the introduction to your new book, “I Must Be Dreaming,” you write “According to many people, dreams as a conversational topic should be avoided, along with aches and pains. Only shrinks are interested, and maybe not even them.” ROZ CHAST: I’ve never felt that way. I think dreams are interesting. Telling people your dreams, as it is with any kind of thing that people talk about endlessly as if somebody’s monologuing, then it’s very boring. But dreams, as a topic, I think are very interesting and I always have felt that way. GS: How much did the pandemic affect your dreams, if at all? RC: I think there are certain aspects of the pandemic, especially the pre-vaccination part, that are a little bit blurry. Maybe it’s because it creeps me out so much to think about it. I had pandemic dreams, for sure, where I would be walking into a store and I would be the only person not wearing a mask or I would be wearing a mask, but nobody else would be wearing one. Stuff like that. Things that had never really come up in my life before. GS: How much, if any, of “I Must Be Dreaming,” was written during the pandemic? RC: I started making cartoons about the dreams before the pandemic. Then I just continued to do it. I kept a dream journal, and I picked out my favorite ones. Some of it was during the pandemic and some of it…I mean, the end of the pandemic…when did it actually end? Did it end when we got vaccinated? Did it end in 2022? I got COVID in 2022, but it was you know very mild. It was the omicron variant, I think. But there are still people who are getting it. There was an uptick recently. We know when it started, but when did it really end? It hasn’t really ended. DREAM COME TRUE Author Roz Chast at the 2007 Texas Book Festival in Austin, Texas, United States. Credit: Larry D. Then check out “Gods and Mortals” by J. D. Netto. WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR MOST RECENT BOOK? I’ve always been enamored by mythology and religion. The idea that Lucifer had a secret romance with the Creator and a lost gay son sparked an entire universe in my head; a world riddled with gods and magic. I wanted the outcast and misfit to be the hero meant to destroy all the gods so a new reign can be established. WHAT DOES “READING RAINBOW” MEAN TO YOU? Take pride in who you are, who and what you love, and the stories that make you you. It’s about stories sparking important conversations—narratives bound to change the course of the future. WHY DO YOU FEEL REPRESENTATION OF A VARIETY OF PEOPLE IS SO IMPORTANT WHEN IT COMES TO WRITING BOOKS? Seeing is believing. ‘GODS AND MORTALS’ ENTERTAINMENT BOOKS Aurora Dominguez THE READING RAINBOW TELL US A LITTLE MORE ABOUT THE BOOK AND WHY YOU DECIDED TO WRITE IT. When growing, we are inspired by narratives pegged as unchangeable. As we grow up, we realize that there are two certain things in life: everything changes, and everything dies. With that in mind, I set out to write a series that mirrored such truth. WHAT CAN FANS EXPECT FROM YOUR BOOK? Lots of turns, smut, twists, and beautiful moments that might just inspire readers to share a few tears. WHAT’S UP NEXT FOR YOU IN THE BOOKISH WORLD? Henderbell 2!
