“MY MOTHER SAID TO ME,
‘IF YOU ARE A SOLDIER, YOU WILL BECOME A GENERAL.
IF YOU ARE A MONK, YOU WILL BECOME THE POPE.’

o pINSTEAD, I WAS A PAINTER, AND BECAME PICASSO.”
-Pablo Picasso

“WHY IS IT THAT NOBODY UNDERSTANDS ME,

YET EVERYBODY LIKES ME?”

-Albert Einstein

GEISNAIPUECSULIAR THING.

We call people geniuses because the messages they bring permit us to understand our world
better, or see it in a more beautiful light. However, it casts the messengers themselves as
superhuman, godlike beings. New truths make myths of those who speak them. Pablo Picasso
believed in the myth of “Picasso,” yet the myth of “Einstein” perplexed Albert Einstein.

Tonight’s production is a comedy about two of the 20th Century’s most influential people,
immediately prior to the events that would make their names synonymous with “genius.” It
was written by a man who must live daily with the myth of “The Wild and Crazy Guy.” I hope it
will make you think. I hope it will help you realize that behind myths of genius are real people
who eat, sleep, wear clothes and make mistakes. I hope it will allow you to see that anyone,
given the right moment, can change the world.

YOU DIDN’T KNOW

1. Albert Einstein was five years old when his father showed him a simple pocket compass. Einstein was mesmerized.
What force exerted itself to make it point in a single direction? This question stayed with Einstein for many years
and has been noted as the beginning of his fascination with science.
2. He hated playing the violin until hearing the music of Mozart at the age of thirteen. With a new passion Einstein
continued to play the violin the rest of his life,
3. Albert Einstein declined to be the second President of Israel due to his “natural aptitude and the experience to
deal properly with people.”
4. Part of Einstein’s charm was his disheveled look. In addition to his uncombed hair, one of his peculiar habits was
to never wear socks. They were such a pain because they would get holes in them.
5. He loved to smoke. In 1959, after accepting a life membership in the Montreal Pipe Smokers Club, Einstein said
he believed “that pipe smoking contributes to a somewhat calm and objective judgment in all human affairs”.
6. More than two decades after publishing his Special Theory of Relativity, he co-invented a refrigerator
that operated on compressed gasses. Patented in 1930 it was soon overshadowed by Freon-based compressors.
7. Einstein did not create the atomic bomb or even work in the Manhattan project (he was denied the security
clearance by the U.S. Army). But both Einstein’s letters to then U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt outlining
the theory of a uranium fission bomb and his famous formula, E=mc2, linking
mass and energy, helped spur the development of nuclear weapons.
8. Anagram ~ ‘Albert Einstein’ is an anagram of ‘Ten elite brains’
