Synopsis
The title character, DESTINY GILES, is seven years old when she sees her parents mauled
to death by a pack of wild coyotes. Destiny, now a pretty 18 year old young woman,
constantly sees the incident in a recurring dream. Her boyfriend, Bryan
“Patch” Richardson, is an All-star basketball player at Spring Port High School and
they are very much in love. After winning a big game, Patch takes Destiny out to eat.
On the way, Patch loses control of the car and has a terrible accident and smashes
into a Coyote. The Coyote with glowing red eyes gets up, looks at the accident and
walks off unharmed. Patch and Destiny are Both injured and are rushed to hospital.
At the hospital Destiny is asked to undergo a blood transfusion to save Patch’s life and
during the exchange of blood both of them have incredibly vivid dreams. Patch
dreams of two runaway slaves, a mother and her son hiding in the woods. Destiny
dreams about a Native American man weeping while holding a pregnant African
woman as she lay dying in a pool of her own blood. When Destiny wakes up, her best
Friend, TARA HARPER, is sitting at her bedside. She tells Tara, an aspiring artist, about her
dream and Tara begins sketching them.
Tara shows the drawings to P.H.D. NORMAN FLEAGLE, an anthropologist she is taking AP
(Advance Placement) classes with at the local college. Dr. Fleagle interprets the
sketches as a depiction of life with a Native American tribe in the 1850s called the
Lumbee, a group of Indians that intermingled with African slaves. He suggests
the girls talk to a Lumbee Shaman he interviewed for his doctoral thesis named OLD
BAREFOOT. When Tara and Destiny visit OLD BAREFOOT he explains all the events that
have happened in Destiny’s life are preordained and are connected to an ancient
curse that is a part of her family legacy. Destiny’s disbelief turns into resolve as she
comes to understand her life’s purpose. She must save her family and Patch from her
family’s curse, but how and at what personal cost?
Lumbee Tribe-One Among Many
Within the DNA of Americas identity lives many stories that have not been explored or told—the lives and experiences of people who share
Native-African ancestry are among those stories. African and Native peoples came together in the Americas centuries ago and where united
in their struggles. Native Americans were sometimes enslaved alongside African Americans which rarely appears in American history books.
Native peoples and Africans intermarried and lived through common struggles. Later, Native tribes sometimes took in and harbored runaway
slaves, accepting them into their communities and blending in their cultural expressions. The Lumbee Tribe is just one of many tribes that have
shared this history with Africans. The story of Destiny although fictional and filled with themes of love, revenge, mystery and mysticism is based in
American history. To find out more about Native-African history go to: indivisible-African-Native Lives in The Americas/ 3
