panga With

Kangana ranaut

and neena gupta

irector Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, of Bareilly Ki Barfi and Nil Battey
Sannata fame, announced her new project titled Panga on
DTuesday. Ashwiny chose a unique way to announce the film as
she shared a video featuring snapshots of its cast members including
Kangana Ranaut, Neena Gupta and Jassie Gill with their family. Along
with the video, she wrote, “My existing reality is a reflection of my dear
ones’ belief in me. From the team backed by its families. Presenting
#PANGA with #KanganaRanaut, @jassi1gill @Neenagupta001.
Produced by @foxstarhindi | In Cinemas | 2019”
The one-minute video begins with Ashwiny’s words, “I can take risks
and follow my passion because they are rooting for me every day” and
what follows next are endearing clicks of the filmmaker with husband
Nitesh Tiwari and their children. Next comes family photos of Kangana
with a quote, “It hasn’t been an easy journey. But my family give me
the strength to face it all.” Neena Gupta is quoted as saying in the
video, “My family is my support system, my courage, my inspiration
and my trophy too!”
Panga is said to be the story of a new-age family who challenges
stereotypes and dares to dream. It promises to reaffirm the belief that
nothing is impossible for a family which laughs, cries and dreams
together.
Kangana, who will play a Kabbadi player in the film, said, “When
Ashwiny narrated the story of Panga, I was completely moved. My
family has been my pillar of strength and have always stood by me
in thick and thin. I could really relate to the emotions of the film. Plus,
Ashwiny is known for her slice-of-life films and I loved her recent work
Bareilly Ki Barfi. Panga is doubly special for me as for the first time, I
will play the role of a National-level Kabbadi player. That’s going to be
challenging for sure! I am looking forward to some exciting times with
Ashwiny and the Fox Star team.”
Impressed with the script, Jassie Gill, who will be seen playing the role of
Kangana’s husband in the movie, shared, “I loved the script especially
the inspiring family angle. The film is a rollercoaster of emotions but to
me, the real Indian family feeling was the most heartwarming part of
the subject. And I also come from a very close-knit family and hence,
I can identify with the story.”
Panga is slated to release in theatres in 2019. Sharing her thoughts,
Ashwiny said, “I wanted to keep evolving with stories that talk about
the relationships in a new age Indian family. Fox Star Studios is exactly
in the same space of storytelling and I am filled with gratitude to work
with them to see our vision unfold and create characters and stories
that would be relatable to all and still be unique.”

PALTAN SONG RAAT KITNI: ARJUN RAMPAL, SONU SOOD AND

OTHERS REMEMBER THEIR LOVED ONES

o J.P. Dutta film is complete without an emotional number by
Sonu Nigam. Even in Dutta’s upcoming film Paltan, the versa-
Ntile singer has lent his voice to a song titled “Raat Kitni”. The
track is special as it reunites the trio of Sonu Nigam, Javed Akhtar and
Anu Malik.
Paltan’s latest song “Raat Kitni” looks like a blend of tracks from Dut-

ta’s previous films – “Sandese Aate Hain” (Border), “Raat Ki Hatheli
Par” (Refugee) and “Seemaaye Bulaaye” (LOC Kargil). Repeating a
similar setting, Dutta has most of his actors including Arjun Rampal, Gurmeet Choudhary, Sonu Sood, Harshvardhan Rane and Luv Sinha
sitting around a bonfire in the middle of the night, remembering their loved ones. The song also gives a glimpse of the women in each of
their lives – Esha Gupta, Sonal Chauhan, Dipika Kakar and Monica Gill. Dutta returns to direction after 12 long years with Paltan. His last
film was Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan starrer Umrao Jaan.
Paltan is the third offering in Dutta’s war trilogy, after Border and LOC Kargil. Also starring Jackie Shroff, the film revolves around the
Nathu La and Cho La clashes along the Sikkim border that took place in 1967, after the India-China War of 1962. It portrays a lesser
known story of the Indian forces in an intense battle to ward off a Chinese infiltration.

As per reports, Dutta collaborated with the Indian Army to train the actors for their roles and also roped in real-life soldiers to be a part of
the film. This is also one of the few Indian war films that use actual ammunition and weaponry for the shooting of war sequences.
Paltan is set to release on September 7.

had earlier announced that the film revolves around a
“surprise shaadi”.
Meanwhile, Sidharth too shared a poster revealing their

characters’ names. In the film, Sidharth will play Abhay
while Parineeti will play Babli.
It seems not just Pari and Sid’s fans but even Karan Johar

mouni roy on Bagging

BrahmaStra and raW:

i am Still in diSBelief

ouni Roy, one of the popular actors of television, is still in
“disbelief” about having bagged Karan Johar produced

MBrahmastra and John Abraham-starrer RAW: Romeo Ak-
bar Walter. The 32-year-old actor, who was most recently seen in
Akshay Kumar-starrer Gold, says she is “grateful” that good roles
are coming her way.
“I feel elated and grateful for the opportunities that have come my
way. I don’t know how it happened, I am still in disbelief. I am very
excited about this part of my life. I will be giving my best. I have
started working on the two films Brahmastra and Romeo Akbar
Walter,” Mouni told PTI.

In Brahmastra, she joins the star-studded cast of Ranbir Kapoor,
Alia Bhatt and Amitabh Bachchan. Calling herself a proud televi-
sion actor, Mouni says she was very happy working on the small
screen and if there are interesting projects then she will definitely
take them up, irrespective of which medium they hail from.
“I love acting. It (films) is just an extension of what I like, that is
acting. All I look for in a film is a good story and role. I haven’t cho-
sen the films that I will be doing. The makers thought I was apt for
these films. Right now I do not have the time to do anything other
than fulfilling my film commitments. Once I am done with it, I am ok
to do anything that is exciting and challenging on any medium as

my main job as an actor is to act.”
Though she has over nine years of experience on the small screen,
Mouni still felt like a beginner when she started working on Gold.
“My experience on TV taught me a lot about work ethics and being
a disciplined actor. But when it came to this role and film (Gold), I
started everything with newness. I felt like a beginner. Experience
does help but to get into the skin of the character is a different
thing,” she said.
Mouni is on cloud nine as Gold, which marks her Bollywood debut,

has struck chord with the audience. “I have been getting positive
feedback from family and friends and they are little biased also as
they love me. I think the critics have been good. I have read only
good reviews. Why focus on the bad?,” she says, when asked
about her performance getting lukewarm response.
The Naagin actor feels it is the unity in diversity theme that has
worked in favour of the film. “It is not just about winning gold medal
but about the relationship that the characters share with each oth-
er in the film and how the story is interwoven and how team broke
apart during partition and it is also highlights the importance of
team spirit,” she adds.

jim SarBh: i noW Want to

e created an impression with his powerful portrayal of negative characters
in films like Neerja, Raabta and Padmaavat, but actor Jim Sarbh now
Hwants to look beyond these “one-sided characters” as he says he is
really tired of playing people “who don’t care about” others.
“When I played these roles, they were the only ones that were offered to me.
However, now I have the liberty to be a lot more selective. I am a little bored
of playing negative characters. I want to now look at meaty, complicated roles.
I am not interested in one-sided characters,” Sarbh told IANS in an e-mail
interview from Mumbai, where he was the part of the celebrations of premium
menswear brand Selected Homme.
Talking about his previous roles and the kind of characters he wants to do in
future, Sarbh said, “I am really tired of playing characters who don’t care about
people. I now want to start portraying characters who care about people.”
His portrayal of Malik Kafur, the slave-general of Ranveer Singh’s character
Alauddin Khilji in filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat, brought him
loads of appreciation. The actor says that working with Bhansali has helped
him in mastering the basics of acting.
“Sanjay has a very keen eye for detailing. It’s all about making a beautiful
frame and filling that frame with equally detailed, subtle, nuanced acting. I
am very happy I got a chance to be a part of that process. I learnt a lot about
precision, it was like an accelerated course in the basics of film — hitting your
mark, eyeline, learning the frame, its angles.
“Thanks to this process, I am now much more comfortable being
on any other project or on set. Because I have mastered the
basics,” Sarbh said.
For the actor, Malik Kafur was a brilliant character.
“The moment I read the script, I knew I wanted to essay the
role. I thought the character was so interesting and had so much
scope and playfulness to it,” he said.
Talking about his future projects, he said, “There is a web-series
Made in Heaven I am currently working on. I also worked on a
film earlier this year with Michael Winterbottom that also starred
Dev Patel and Radhika Apte which is premiering at the Toronto
International Film Festival in September. Another film that I
worked on in Dubai… with Neel Kumar directing it. ”
Since he was at a fashion event, how serious he is about trends?
“I almost never take it very seriously. I wear what I like to wear,”
he confessed.
“I don’t really know or care about trends. However, I really like
things — materials. Like all of us who would be at a fashion show,
I am a materialist — I appreciate and enjoy pretty, attractive and
striking or subtle, subdued things that speak for themselves.
People would call this fashion, but that’s not how I view it. I look
at it as something I like, and I let the look do the talking,” said
the actor.

KalKi Koechlin: i don’t thinK i conSciouSly try

to Be ShocKing or different

he made her Bollywood debut with Anurag Kashyap’s Dev.D and
went on to do some unconventional roles in films like That Girl in
SYellow Boots, Margarita with a Straw and Waiting. National Award
winning actress Kalki Koechlin says she never tries to be “shocking and
different” and always expresses what she feels like — just how instinctively
she got her hair chopped recently.
“I don’t try to be different. When I cut my hair short recently, people were
very shocked and I was like, ‘I didnt think about it’. I wanted to change
it, so I did that. I remember going on Google while in the parlour with my
hairdresser to find out what should we do and how we should cut.
“Now it’s like people going ‘Oh my God, what has she done? Is she
sick?’ Everybody has a different opinion. I am just saying that I don’t
think I consciously try to be shocking or different. I express what I feel
like expressing,” Kalki told IANS on the sidelines of the live edition of her
podcast series Kalki Presents: My Indian Life.
The actress visited St Stephen’s College to talk to students about her new
podcast with the BBC World Service. It was released on August 4.
Kalki Presents: My Indian Life is about being young and Indian in the 21st
century. Over 10 episodes, the podcast series explores extraordinary real-
life stories from around the country. One episode is about a woman who
talks to Kalki about her part in India’s Mars mission, while another is the
story of a man with a speech impediment trying to succeed as a musician.
The series will also feature stories on family conflicts, sexual abuse,
harassment, caste discrimination, victim shaming, body insecurities and
sex education. It is BBC’s first English language podcast aimed at young
adult Indians.
“Podcast is a complete new world. It is an interesting platform to understand
young population in the world as we have a lot of young adults who are
extremely smart and talented and have a lot of opinions,” she said.
There were some of the shocking stories that made her cry.
“We cried while shooting. You realise these stories once in a while, but you
don’t know how often that happens. That is really shocking. It just makes
you face reality. You don’t understand what all they go through to reach
where they are,” she said.
Kalki, who received a Special Jury Award at the National Film Awards
for her performance as a young woman afflicted with cerebral palsy in
Margarita, With A Straw, feels that to change society, everyone — not just
Bollywood celebrities — need to speak up.
“I don’t know if it’s just Bollywood that has to bring about the change. I
think every medium, in terms of whatever work we are in need to talk
about issues more. When you talk about that, you can make stories about
them and eventually film about them. Opening debate and discussion (is
the solution) rather than immediate firing on each other on social media
because that’s the problem. We always end up sticking to our opinion
rather than listening to another person,” she said.
What else is keeping her busy nowadays expect her podcast? “I just
finished shooting for Gully Boy. I am also doing a web series, and this will
be the first one that will come of mine titled Made In Heaven. It is set in
Delhi. It has a great bunch of writers, and has some really strong writers
and directors,”

former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The
Vactor recently revealed in an interview with

Mid-day that she will be portraying the former leader
in a web series based on Sagarika Ghose’s book,

Indira: India’s Most Powerful Prime Minister.
Earlier there were talks about whether the source

material would be developed into a series or a
proper feature film. However, Balan said that due

to the excessive amount of text, the makers have
decided to develop a web series based on the book.

“There is too much material for it be made into a film. So, we decided to turn it into a web series. We don’t know how many seasons
we will be allotting to it. We are in the process of putting together a team,” said the actor.

The show will be produced by Ronnie Screwvala. However, the project will take some time to take wings as the team for the show
is still being put together. Therefore, a date has not been fixed yet. When asked whether the makers would be taking permission

of the Gandhi family before they begin filming, Balan said that they will not be seeking approval by them as they already have the
book’s rights.

Apart from the show, Balan is also working on the much-anticipated NTR biopic. The actor had said in earlier interviews that she
is excited about being a part of the movie, as the biopic is her first Telugu film. “It is my first Telugu film, so I am very excited as I

have never spoken and delivered dialogues in other languages. I did a small appearance in a Malayalam film but here I have a
full-fledged role,” the actor told PTI. Balan will be essaying the role of NTR’s wife Basavatarakam in the film.

akistan’s singing sensation Atif Aslam has been trolled
on social media and also criticized by the country’s
Pmainstream media for singing a popular Bollywood song

at a Pakistan Independence Day function in New York.
Atif, who has lent his voice to many Bollywood songs, sang
“Tera Hone Laga Hoon” from the 2009 film Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab

Kahani at the function earlier this month.
The performance prompted many of his fans back home to
question his patriotism and also hit out at him.
Zero respect for Atif Aslam!” wrote a Twitter user.
Boycott Atif Aslam Ap Ne Dil Tor Diya #boycottAtifAslam

#AtifAslam,” wrote another user.
After the much-heated debate on Twitter, the 35-year-old singer
responded to the uproar in a long Instagram post, saying that

hopefully, things will change in a “Naya” (new) Pakistan.
Simply love my haters. Undoubtedly, Allah is the only one who
can make someone worthy of respect or not. The Pakistani flag
is my identity and my fans know that I respect it a lot. I’m glad
that my fans know how to deal with fake propaganda against

me, he said.
Atif hoped that “Naya Pakistan” can help people realise that
they need to respect others, especially those who work hard

every day to make the country proud.
Earlier, Pakistani classical singer Shafqat Amanat Ali, who has
also lent his voice to some Indian songs, had defended Atif.
I stand in support of Atif Aslam for singing his songs at the
parade. Music is not Indian or Pakistani. It’s just music. Singers

are synonymous with their songs which are loved equally by
fans from every country, Ali said.
Film critic Omair Alavi said people need to remember that

Bollywood films and dramas are shown openly in Pakistan in
cinemas and on television channels as art, film or music has no
boundaries.
