happy this cohort of new members is joining and we want to be sure they connect with others in this stage of their lives.
Your warm outreach to a new member(s) can be as simple as a phone call introducing yourself and welcoming them to our Shul. We
encourage you to invite the new member(s) to join you for coffee or plan to meet at an upcoming B’nai Amoona Shabbat Service or event.
Our goal is to make sure each potential new member feels comfortable and welcomed in our warm Congregation.

The Social Action Committee is looking for new members. We need help for continuing our many programs, such as Operation Isaiah,
our annual collection and sorting of items for the Jewish Food Pantry. Also, we are hoping to launch new programs, such as a recycling
program for the synagogue. Watch the Shabbat Sheets, Enouncements, and bulletins for our activities. Contact Laura Goldmeier

The Employment Connection helps individuals needing jobs by providing proper clothing for interviews in addition to helping with
resume writing and preparation for the interview.  Once again, this year, we are sponsoring the collection of men’s and women’s

You can also purchase gift cards for many retailers, restaurants, and even Amazon. To see our full list of available vendors, go to
www.bnaiamoona.com/scrip or call Jeanne and she will send you the form. This is a great time to start thinking ahead to Chanukah as
we light the first Chanukah candle the evening of December 2.
So, how does this help B’nai Amoona, you may ask? Each of these vendors remits a percentage of the scrip/gift cards back to us! If
everyone were to participate, just imagine the dollars that would come in to help our Shul. Participating on a regular basis allows you
to have pride in the well-being of our Shul.
Remember the phrase “little things mean a lot”, that’s what buying scrip and gift cards means to B’nai Amoona.

Thanking you in advance and wishing you a L’Shanah Tovah Tikatavu,

Shomrei Amoonim

Please let us know if you, a family member or a congregant goes into a hospital, rehab facility, skilled nursing facility, etc. We would
love to reach out to them, but due to HIPAA laws we can only do so if we know where they are. Please contact Amy Maupin, Klei
Kodesh Assistant at 314-576-9990 x131 or [email protected] or call Sheryl Kalman at 636-537-2538 or
[email protected].

What is Shomrei Amoonim? We are a small village of Congregants who reach out to other Congregants to let them know we care.

Our biggest program has been to reach out to approximately 60 elder, wiser Congregants with holiday care packages. This has been a
chance to share memories and stories between generations. As a congregation, we are transitioning into a year where we will focus on
Atideynu, our future. Here is a reflection from one of our volunteer families on what volunteering has meant to them:

Our family appreciates the opportunity to participate in the Shomrei Amoonim program. For about 4-5 years, we’ve delivered
small presents around the Jewish holidays to B’nai Amoona community members who reside at the Brookdale retirement
community. The gifts are lovingly prepared by the wonderful Shomrei Amoonim team spearheaded by Sheryl Kalman. Our
children Daniel (10th grade), Ariela (8th grade) and Francesca (4th grade) enjoy sharing the holiday spirit with the residents,
whom we’ve gotten to know over the years.

“The anticipation when we ring the doorbell to surprise someone with a holiday gift from B’nai Amoona is one of the most
enjoyable parts. I enjoy meeting the residents and learning about their connection to B’nai Amoona,” said Francesca.

“I like to hear stories about our friends’ pasts and the common Jewish heritage we share across generations. I find it very
enjoyable when we get invited inside for a conversation and learn about our friends’ hobbies and interests. For example,
Mr. Jack Finkelstein showed us his musical instruments and Mr. Bob Groer told us about the classes he takes at Washington
University and showed us his pool table,” said Ariela.

“It feels satisfying to know we can do something that makes others feel good, even though it is a small gesture,” said Daniel.

"With grandparents thousands of miles away, we are glad that our children get the opportunity to develop meaningful
connections across generations."

A little known secret is that Shomrei Amoonim keeps a small supply of soup, Challah, and meals to use in times of grief or significant
illness. Thank you to Jon Hoffman, Dotty Ellis and Regina Herzog for keeping our freezer stocked. If you know someone who is in
need of a meal, or would like to help feed a soul please contact me!

Introducing…DEBRA SPIGEL

Debra has been at B’nai Amoona since the 1st grade, when she attended Shabbat services, Sunday School and later,
Hebrew school. Debra was one of the last congregants to have her Bat Mitzvah with Rabbi Halpern; Rabbi Lipnick was
just beginning his tenure at the synagogue. Debra met Joel, her husband of 49 years, at Washington University Hillel.
Both were students; Joel at WU and Debra at University of Missouri St. Louis. If UMSL had a Hillel Debra and Joel may
never have met. Their 3 children; Chad, Pamela and Sarah all grew up at B’nai Amoona. Debra taught Sunday School at
BA, preschool at the JCC and 1st grade at Epstein Hebrew Academy as well as in the Ft. Zumwalt district. As her parents
aged and needed more care, Debra retired but continued substitute teaching whenever she could find time. This is a
challenging year for Debra as both of her parents passed away. She finds comfort saying Kaddish 10-12 times per week
and when unable to get to Shul she recites a prayer given to her by Rabbi Davidson. Debra has formed a special bond
with other congregants also navigating the process of loss. “We’ve formed a brotherhood and sisterhood”. Debra is

quick to describe what she likes most about B’nai Amoona. “BA is there for you in the good
times and the tough times. The rabbi is easy to talk to and Sharon is very warm”. Debra is
an active member; she volunteered in the gift shop and helped with the Shabbat bulletin
and now co-chairs the Minyanaires. A good laugh is always a welcome gift and occurs
frequently in the company of one of her sisters and an aunt. She is able to relax, be herself
and the laughter comes naturally. Debra is passionate about her family and has committed
herself to creating Shalom Bayit, domestic harmony. Debra makes it a point not to judge,
to be an independent thinker and to keep learning. Debra proves it’s never too late to aim
for the sky and dive into life. Literally! Last month she went skydiving with her 18-year old
granddaughter and loved the experience. However, Debra is not a 24/7 thrill seeker. When
asked about what makes a perfect day she describes joy in staying home, playing games
and watching TV.

Introducing…CALEB PULTMAN

Caleb is a remarkable 19-year old whose family has deep roots at B’nai Amoona. A graduate
of BA's preschool, Hebrew school, Sunday school and summer camps, Caleb also served
as USY President from 2016-2017. Caleb just completed his freshman year at American
University in Washington DC where he is pursuing an interdisciplinary major in the
School of Public Affairs incorporating communications, legal institutions, economics and
government. During the school year, in addition to classwork, Caleb maintains a lobbying
internship at a boutique firm. Yes, we are describing a young man just barely old enough
to vote. And no, school + internships are not enough to satisfy his appetite for politics.
Caleb also spends significant time researching the 2018 midterm congressional races and
legislation while observing hearings on Capitol Hill. Sporting a suit and tie, Caleb commuted
to DC for his “Hillternship” and describes loving his work with the lobbying firm’s clients.
Ironically, Caleb’s dream job is not on The Hill in DC but rather with a different type of court, in Madison Square Garden,
as the starting point guard for the NY Knicks. What surprises people most is how much Caleb knows about the game of
basketball including its history, player stats and culture. Caleb is the first to admit that he is much better talking about
the game than actually playing it. Caleb’s perfect day includes neither basketball nor politics but starts with sleeping late,
waking up in a city on the Mediterranean, eating a big breakfast while reading a great book. A walk around town, a seat
in a café to eat and people watch, and closing out this day of perfection is time spent with family and friends enjoying
good music. Caleb is passionate about his family first and foremost; his community is a close second. Caleb defines his
community as “wherever he is at the moment”. This summer that meant B’nai Amoona’s camp Ramot Amoona where he
was Rosh Teva (spearheading the nature program). If forced to pick one word to describe himself Caleb says “curious”.
Stand Up Comedy and SNL keep Caleb laughing. When asked what he cherishes most about BA, Caleb is quick with
his response! “The ability to balance tradition with exploration. B’nai Amoona provides the tools that people need to
understand Judaism”.

Introducing…ROZ GLASER

Roz (formerly Roz Kaskowitz) has been a B’nai Amoona member since she was 10 years old. Not the first but the second
Bat Mitzvah ever to be celebrated at BA! Roz and her husband Leonard are currently enjoying their 57th year of marriage,
and have 3 grown children; Amy, Mark and Lisa in addition to 4 grandchildren. The Social Action Committee is where
Roz shared her gifts of caring and friendliness; her impact lives on in many hearts today. Roz chaired the Carver House
Christmas gift collection and donation program for 10 years, shopping for others right after the Christmas holiday and
storing the boxes in her basement. Welcoming BA members ‘home’ with a congregation mug filled with silk flowers,
Roz helped ease the difficult move to a nursing home. And for many years, Leonard and Roz were the B’nai Amoona
gardening committee, a committee of 2, maintaining the beautiful synagogue garden. They retired and passed on the
shovel to the next generation. Oasis and The Butterfly House join the list of local organizations fortunate to receive Roz
and Leonard’s time, in addition to tutoring children at Green Trails, their children’s elementary school. Volunteering

plays a significant role in Roz’s life, yet she also worked professionally in education. She was
a preschool teacher at our synagogue and earned her Associates degree in Early Childhood
Education, working many years for the Parkway School District as a teacher’s assistant. Later,
Roz cared for her mother as she lived with Alzheimer’s Disease and answered helpline calls
as a volunteer for the Alzheimer’s Association for 10 years. Adding to the list of organizations
who receive Roz’s commitment and care is The Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation, where
she currently supports individuals who, like Roz and some of her family members, live with
the effects of this illness. Fellow BA members might be surprised to learn that Roz collects and
displays small ornamental boxes throughout her home, representing her travels. Each box
contains a slip of paper describing where and when the box was acquired. Besides having a
passion for enriching others’ lives, when asked, “What are you most passionate about?” Roz
pauses to consider and responds, “People being open and kind, sharing all that St. Louis has
to offer with others and The Botanical Gardens”. A perfect day for Roz means being outdoors
soaking up the joy of spending time amongst friends and family.

College Connect
Do you ever wonder if your college student will continue to embrace the religious Congregation B’nai Amoona Bulletin
traditions they experienced at home? At B’nai Amoona, we have a program called
College Connect designed to support college students and keep them connected with
their home synagogue, even if they are miles away. Our College Connect chairperson,
Rebbetzin Paulie Rose, and I will be sending out small gifts throughout the year to
remind our students that B’nai Amoona is thinking of them and wishing them well.
As a college alum, I remember the many High Holy Day, Chanukah, Purim and end
of the year surprises I received.
The College Connect program is funded by the Rabbi Lipnick Foundation for
Conservative Judaism. With this generous funding, we are able to engage college
students with love, and help them continue to feel connected to their faith, even
though they may be far away. We are so looking forward to sending each one of these
packages with the love of Judaism we share and to seeing their reactions!
If you have a college student and would like them to receive these wonderful
packages,, please contact me ([email protected]) with your students’ name and
address.

A Note from Sarah...
Why do I do what I do, you may ask? Youth groups provide our youth and teens with
the opportunity to create life-long friendships outside of school. Our events are a
mixture of fun, educational and meaningful experiences! As a teen at B’nai Amoona,
I made new friends, stayed connected with old friends and grew as an individual and
as a Jewish woman. I would love to talk with you about the importance of our youth
programming. Come join the bunch!

Sisterhood’s Fall Class: ATIDEYNU 201: Conversations in Search of a Meaningful Judaism
As we begin the reconstruction of our Synagogue’s physical plant, we also need to explore a series of conversations about the
blueprint for our communities' future social, emotional and spiritual aspirations. We will start by listening to the voices of
younger Jews, from a variety of Jewish communities, who will talk and reflect about “things to come”. These voices are found
in a collection of essays edited by Rabbi Sidney Schwartz in the book entitled Jewish Megatrends. As our conversations move
along we will, no doubt, invite various Rabbis, teachers, artists and writers to join our explorations. The topics for discussion
will be posted online and in our Bulletin. People are free to join us for a particular subject matter, or they can enjoy dialoguing
with us throughout the entire series. We would love to have you join us! Register online at www.bnaiamoona.com. Contact
Linda Spitzer-Gavatin at [email protected], with any questions.

GET YOUR PIN BEFORE THE HIGH HOLY DAYS AND WEAR IT TO SHUL!

Our Torah Fund theme this year focuses on Atid meaning “future”. We are so excited about this theme
because, coincidentally, it ties right into our B’nai Amoona theme for this coming year which is Atideynu
2.0: Imagining our Jewish Future. The entire Congregation will be thinking about how we envision our
future as Jews here at Shul and individually as well! How do you envision your personal future; the future
of your family; community; the United States, Canada, and Israel? When you dream of a bright future, is
it in the next world or this one? The seminaries of the Conservative/Masorti Movement, which we support
through Torah Fund, are doing the great work which helps us navigate our future together, as one
people. And our Sisterhoods provide the social and educational networks the extended family, which
help us go forward in our future as Jewish women, with confidence.

The 5779 Torah Fund pin envelopes the Hebrew word for “future” (Atid) with
a stylized Magen David. It represents our wish for a distinctly Jewish future,
for ourselves as individuals, our families, and our communities.

Our Sisterhood joins Sisterhoods across North America to support, strengthen, and sustain Conservative/
Masorti Judaism throughout the world. Your donation ensures our legacy by educating future generations of
Conservative and Masorti Jews, Rabbis, Cantors, educators, and lay leaders at these four schools:

• Jewish Theological Seminary – NY • Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies – LA •
Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies – Jerusalem • Seminario Rabinico – Buenos Aires
