HIGH ב"ה
HOLY DAYS5782
Shalom Chaverim and Chaverot,
Inside this magazine, you will find important information
regarding the High Holy Days at Congregation B’nai
Amoona. Our staff and Klei Kodesh continually work with
our Doctors of B’nai Amoona (DOBA) Committee to make
sure our High Holy Day offerings are not only moving and
meaningful, but also safe for all.
It is with this in mind, that our Board of Trustees has voted
to only allow vaccinated members and guests to gather
in person this year. In addition to showing a vaccination
card, we are also requiring adults and children ages 2 and
older to wear a face mask. Vaccinated individuals ages 12
and older will be permitted inside the building for adult
programming with a vaccination card. Children under
12 years old and their vaccinated family members are
invited to join us for our Outdoor Services (anyone 12 and
older will be required to show their vaccination cards).
Unvaccinated individuals are invited to join us via live
streaming for our Main Services.
As we know, medical findings change daily and guide in
the recommendations offered by our DOBA Committee,
the CDC and our local and state Health Departments. We
take these recommendations very seriously and our High
Holy Day schedule may need to change at any time. We
will update you with any changes and encourage you to
keep an eye on emails as well as our website. We thank you
for your patience and understanding and look forward to
being together safely. Shanah Tovah!
2 High Holy Days 5782
Shalom B’nai Amoona Family,
This year as we approach our 5782 High Holy Days, we look forward to your partnership with our
Klei Kodesh, Professional Team and the Board of Trustees in our mission to be forward looking.
Even before the New Year, we began taking the action steps necessary to ensure the sustainability
of Congregation B’nai Amoona for future generations. It is all the more important now, as we begin a
New Year, to share fresh expectations and updated procedures. We ask you to open your hearts and
minds to the ideas that will be brought forward over the next 12 months.
The High Holy Days span over 30 days, beginning with Selichot, communal prayers for expiation
and forgiveness on Saturday evening, August 28 and ending with Simchat Torah, on the evening of
September 28 and the morning of the 29th, joyfully celebrating the end of the annual cycle of Torah
readings while marking the beginning of a new annual cycle.
This year’s theme is especially timely:
“Kol HaOlam Kulo Gesher Tzar Meod; VeHaIkar Lo Lefached Klal The entire world is like a narrow
bridge; but the most important thing to recall is to have no fear at all.”
Each one of us can create our own bridge without anyone judging us. Each of us can monitor the level
of sway we want, who can join us on our bridge and we can make our own choices, within the spirit
of protecting others and ourselves. We need to have our internal confidence, and not let the external
chatter be an influence on our behavior as Our Big Tent has the capacity for many different narrow
bridges.
This year our High Holy Days will offer us the ability to personalize our worship experience. We will
offer live services, outdoor services, virtual services and ongoing flexibility based on the current
environment as Covid challenges are still a daily reality. Your safety and peace of mind are our goals,
and inscription in the Book of Life is our aspiration.
This year, pre-registration will be required for any of our in-person worship opportunities, so please
pay close attention to all of our communications, beginning with this High Holy Day guide. Information
is also on a dedicated page on our website and includes worship schedules, giving opportunities and
registration information. Please be sure to check it out! Due to the “hybrid” nature of our worship
options - worshipping in-person or through streaming - we will once again be lending out the holiday
Machzorim for those not joining us in person. Instructions for securing a prayer book are within this
guide and also on our website. Your Kapparah Gelt pledge card is also enclosed in this mailing. Other
giving opportunities include High Holy Day greetings and youth Machzorim bookplates, leaving a
family Holy Day legacy. Please give generously – your meaningful donation is especially critical to
strengthening all the operations of our Shul! Should you have any questions, please feel free to reach
out to Gail Armstrong, our Director of Development at [email protected] or 314-576-9990 x126.
As the President of the B’nai Amoona Board of Trustees, I can share how honored and privileged we,
your leadership, are to provide ongoing daily focus and inspiration. We look forward to having the
choice, this year, of seeing you in the Big Tent. In the meantime, from our families to yours, we pray
that you be inscribed in the Book of Life for a year filled with Shalom (peace), Briyut (good health) and
Simchah (happiness).

High Holy Days 5782 3
Our 5782 High Holy Day Theme:
“Kol HaOlam Kulo Gesher Tzar Meod; VeHalkar Lo Lefached Klal.
The entire world is like a narrow bridge; but the most important thing to recall is to have no fear at all.”
One of my all-time favorite quotes, and the one which will be our Shul’s theme for the coming academic year, is
attributed to the enigmatic and iconoclastic Chassidic Rabbi Nachman of Bratzlav (b. 1772 – d. 1810). It has been set
to music many times over and is a fan favorite at Jewish Summer Camps and Youth Programs.
The Hebrew version we commonly encounter is:
“Kol HaOlam Kulo Gesher Tzar Meod; VeHalkar Lo Lefached Klal.
The entire world is like a narrow bridge; but the most important thing to recall is to have no fear at all.”
At first blush, this appears to be an encouraging and optimistic message. Reb Nachman seems to be suggesting that
part of the human experience is acknowledging that the world we live in can be a dangerous and scary place, and
that we should continually strive to press-forward and transcend the daunting moments of our lives.
Interestingly, nonetheless, the Bratzlaver Rebbe’s famous teaching has been misquoted through the centuries. The
original text that records his teaching actually reads:
“VeHalkar Lo LeHitpached Klal. The essential thing is not to become overly fearful and paralyzed by your fear.”
Reb Nachman, I think, is teaching us something profoundly significant in this passage. We can and should not simply
wish our fears away as fear – Pachad in Hebrew – serves as a crucial role in our growth and development. Fear warns
us of looming danger and spurs us to take necessary and meaningful action. What we must never do is Lehitpachad
– to allow our trepidations to paralyze us to the point of inaction.
Eleanor Roosevelt once said: “You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really
stop to look fear in the face. So do one thing every day that scares you.”
Friends – Reb Nachman reminds us that our fears are real. And it is precisely from these fears – the ones we face
honestly and manage adeptly – that we can experience deepening and exponential growth.
May we be blessed in 5782 to summon the courage and the resolve to face these fear-inducing realities of daily
living, and still never lose sight of the majesty and beauty of the world we inhabit and the precious gift of life granted
to us by our loving Creator.
Amen and LeShanah Tovah Tikatayvu Ve Techataymu! May we all be inscribed and sealed for a good and health-filled
New Year!
With love,
Reb Carnie

For centuries, blessing the Lulav and Etrog has been the Jewish way of
thanking God for the blessings of the earth on the Holy Day of Sukkot. By
holding the four species together, we symbolically “get our own act to-
gether” for the New Year. By pointing them in six directions, we remind
ourselves that God’s presence can be found in every aspect of our lives.
And by shaking the Lulav and Etrog vigorously, we commit to being “movers and shakers” in the
world, for good and for blessing. Have your Lulav and Etrog delivered directly to your door.
