Cantor Sharon has done so much for us about never being too old to join a Shul.
Truth be told, I think she’s quite old and
still quite sharp. I told her I felt I knew her
even though we’d never met - a woman who
writes loving tribute requests on beauti-
ful, old-style stationery. She told me it had
been ordered in Paris years ago. Somehow,
I wasn’t surprised. After answering the
question she’d called about, I reiterated my
comment about never being too old to join
B’nai Amoona and tried to engage her in the
possibility. In turn, she told me a touching
story about growing up next door to a fam-
ily who attended B’nai Amoona when it was
in University City and how she loved going
to Shul with her next-door friend. It pro-
vided a meaningful experience for her - she
said she loved visiting the Shul. We chatted
a bit more and I hung up with a new friend
(albeit, not yet a new member!).
This is my job. I love it. I love represent-
ing B’nai Amoona, working with people,
hearing their stories, and cultivating rela-
tionships. Although this woman is not a
member, she is clearly close to our mem-
bers, sending regular tributes. My goal is
for all, members and non-members alike, to
see us in this same special light. My greater
goal is to always be caring, approachable,
and a good listener in order to learn what
makes B’nai Amoona meaningful for each
person with whom I interact. The stories are
as varied as the people who tell them, creat-
ing a unique Jewish mosaic representing the
many facets of our Shul.
