Behind the Voice- The Business of Music

On Tuesday, March 27, 2018, The North Carolina Central
University (NCCU) School of Business hosted a discussion
regarding the business of music featuring a panel of renowned
industry professionals.

Participants include Vanessa Ferguson, a finalist from Season
12 of NBC’s “The Voice”; Andreao (Fanatic) Heard, record
producer for Michael Jackson, Will Smith, et al; Charles
Whitfield, music industry executive and co-founder of Hidden
Beach Records; and Eli Davis, manager for Anthony Hamilton,
the HamilTones and 9th Wonder. The discussion will be
moderated by Lenora Helm Hammonds, music professor and
director of NCCU’s Vocal Jazz Ensemble and owner of
Zenzalai Music.

Professor Hammond lead everyone on a journey into behind-
the-scenes topics and discussions. One being a matter of
creativity and what sources are used to maintain creative flow.
It’s easy to start strong but sometimes artists burn out before
finishing at all. This is where creativity comes into play,
creativity is birthed in the midst of creative people. Next, be
creative in staying relative to the music industry. One must be
committed to the process of pursuing their passion which in
turn allows for a unique sound and longevity in the business.
Fanatic reached out to audience members with advice on
studying sounds and various genres to creating a personal
brand.*

“In the business of anything, whether you have a beauty salon,
gas station, restaurant or a music career, the wallpaper for the
success of that business is your business savvy,” said
Professor Hammond, “because what runs everything is
people’s ability to make money. Artists don’t understand the
business like they should. They get blind sighted by being on
stage. They see Beyonce but they don’t know that she hustles
and works really hard. Not knowing the business(side of music)
will cave you in”.

Seven School of Business students tested their knowledge at the second annual Historically
Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Battle of the Brains competition March 9-10 in
Austin, Texas at annual South by Southwest Conference (SXSW). The HBCU Battle of the
Brains brings together the best and brightest students representing HBCUs from around the
country. The competition provided students with an opportunity to strengthen and promote
their skills in business, science, technology, engineering, and math.
Participation in the two-day competition was supported by Home Depot and the Austin
Chapter of the National Black MBA Association.
“The HBCU Battle of the Brains Competition was an outstanding experience for students,”
said Donna Grant, Ph.D., associate professor and chair of NCCU’s Department of Computer
Information Systems. “They were able to compete amongst students from other HBCUs and
also interact with corporate executives, which enhanced the holistic student experience.”
During the competition, students vied for scholarships and bragging rights in the hackathon-
style event. Teams used business cases to present comprehensive strategies, go-to-market
plans and technology solutions to a panel of industry leaders for a chance to win more than
$50,000 in prizes and college scholarships.

Data Scienicte’sRneovtewalhsaNtAyFoTuAt’hsinPkroblem: and
By Dr. Kayvan Miri Lavassani, Associate Professor, Management

The purpose of this article is to introduce an example of the applications of analytical techniques that
can help policymakers to measure the effectiveness of offensive and defensive trade policies. While
we do not intend to promote or deter trade policies that affect competitiveness of businesses,
industries, and countries, nevertheless we hope the analytical tools utilized in this paper can be utilized
to help managers and policymakers to make better-informed decisions. My colleagues and I have
worked on several projects that apply these techniques at the country, industry and individual company
levels and have gained valuable (and previously unknown) insight in to the fast changing global
business environment. In this article, using an example we will explain that the availability of big data
and analytical tools can enable the policymakers to better uncover hidden patterns of trade and
implement trade policies from a business ecosystem perspective. We also argue that a business
ecosystem analysis of trade can provide valuable insights which are not easily identifiable through the
traditional study of the trade blocks.
Using several algorithms, we constructed the global trade ecosystems at the industry level. Each node
represents a particular industry from one specific country. The data includes trade volumes from 54
industries. The colors identify the membership of each industry in different trade ecosystems. For
example, in this figure, most of the blue nodes represent industries in the NAFTA trade block.
However, similar to country-level analysis we identified that certain industries from Ireland and rest of
the word (from developing economies) display trade patterns similar to the members of NAFTA. The
figure above, displays the analysis at the industry level. This model is built based on more than 5.5
million trade transactions. For More Information visit http://ia-foPruAmG.oErg0. 9 | I N T E R N S H I P

2018 Award for Excellence in Teaching
Awarded to School of Business Professor

The Associate Professor Donna Grant, Ph.D., has always been a faculty
standout at North Carolina Central University (NCCU), but now she is being
recognized as one of the top faculty members in the 17-campus University of
North Carolina System.

Grant has been awarded the University North Carolina Board of Governors
2018 Award for Excellence in Teaching Award on May 12, 2018, during
NCCU’s 131st Baccalaureate Commencement.

Grant, who serves as chair of the Computer Information Systems Department at NCCU, is known for
providing unusual yet valuable educational opportunities in the classroom. She invites industry
professionals to advise and mentor students and gives students real-world business problems to
solve.

“Exposing students to real-world experiences allows them to enhance their knowledge of strategies
and operations in the business environment,” Grant says. “I want to make a difference in the lives of
my students.”

Before joining NCCU in 2007, she had a successful 22-year career in corporate leadership. She says
her teaching philosophy blends theoretical concepts with practical experience, with an emphasis on a
wide spectrum of approaches to information systems analysis, design, development, implementation
and management.

“Dr. Grant’s teaching style creates an environment that is conducive to thought, questions, and the
synthesis of new information,” said 2014 School of Business graduate Bobby D. Richardson, adding
that her passion for inspiring and motivating students is evident in the success of so many of the
program’s graduates.

Grant holds a bachelor’s degree in education and mathematics from Northwestern University, as well
as a master’s in information systems/project management, an MBA in finance, and a doctorate in
computer science and information systems, all from DePaul University.

“Corporate partnerships are a great addition to the curricula and will ensure our students are exposed
to emerging technologies and knowledge, such as big data, while also making them market-ready for
lucrative careers,” says Grant.

“It is my passion and destiny to prepare the next generation of professionals,” Grant says, which
comes naturally to Grant, as both her parents were also educators.

Building on a Legacy

Standing on the foundation of a proud legacy of
business leaders, educators, and entrepreneurs,
NCCU School of Business has been investing in
students since 1972.

The NCCU School of Business Building on a
Legacy campaign celebrates the investment that
NCCU School of Business is committed to
imparting through state-of-the-art educational
experiences, practices in innovation that
encourages critical and creative thinking, and
experiential opportunities that position students for
quick and seamless post graduate transitions.

The new construction of the North Carolina Central
University School of Business is on the northeast
corner of the campus, replacing its current
residence, the C. T. Willis Building, which was
constructed in 1956. The new facility – estimated
to cost $38.6 million - will better support today’s
collaborative instruction and research methods,
and will help the University engage additional
talent and partnerships within high-growth
industries critical to North Carolina’s workforce.

The new facility – 82,600 square feet – will sit on a
4.58-acre site at the corner of Alston Avenue and
Lawson Street, and will serve as the first
University landmark coming off N.C. 147. It will
also be a key gateway site inasmuch as it is
positioned next to a projected light rail stop, which
allows the building to act as a hub between the city
and the campus.

NCCU and Google Give Aspiring Computer
Scientists Edge

North Carolina Central University’s (NCCU) School of Business partnered with Google LLC
to host the Google Computer Science Summer Institute (CSSI) for students with a passion
for technology and dreams of becoming a computer scientist Sunday, July 8- Saturday,
July 28, 2018. The program provided 40 participants from several Historically Black
Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) an opportunity to learn computer science fundamentals
under the direction of Google engineers.
“NCCU was excited to host the Google Computer Science Summer Institute,” said Dr.
Donna Grant, program coordinator of NCCU’s Computer Science and Business degree and
School of Business associate professor. “This was a great opportunity for students to
achieve a competitive edge in computer science.”
Students attended the three-week residential program at no charge, thanks to funding from
Google, gaining a kick-start into undergraduate studies in computer science along with
opportunities for professional development, including resume building and design thinking.
Students designed and developed applications with fellow participants to showcase during
special presentations to Google employees from the local office.

SYBEA 2018 Celebrates Rural
Businesses in North Carolina

The 7th annual Summer Youth Business and Entrepreneurship Academy (SYBEA) took place
on June 23-June 30th on the campus of NCCU. This highly competitive experience was
awarded to 40 high performing high school students from across the country.

Students participated in a workshop facilitated by business counselors, Bill Davis, and Small
Business Technical Development Center counselor, LaTasha Best Gaddy. The students
received a thorough introduction to both economic and governmental decision making relating
to rural business from the Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Capital NC Growth
Executive Director, Mark Little. A digital strategy and product development workshop was
facilitated by Rebecca Fernandez, Amazon Analytics Manager, WW Content Operations. The
students were presented with a live case study from a business in Asheville, NC called Poppy
Gourmet Popcorn. Through their association with Poppy, they were called upon to develop a
way to monetize Poppy's digital presence and branding interface.

“With nearly 50% of the academy participants originating from rural areas in North Carolina it
brings us great joy to explore ways for our young scholars to give back to their own
communities,” said Mrs. Keisha Williams, SYBEA Director, “to be able to support the growth and
expansion of businesses in these areas through technology and innovation is of substantial
importance”.

To continue to offer this opportunity at little to no cost to the participants SYBEA is appreciative
of the strong support it received from Wells Fargo, BB&T, Maximus Foundation, and a number
of individual contributors. For more information on ways to give please visit
