Encyclopedia of Me, Shannon Park

Lesson 5: Encyclopedia of Me 
 

Today you are going to ​create an ​Encyclopedia of Me.​ Write at least 1 entry for each letter of 
the alphabet, retelling something special about your life. 
 
Let’s look at an example from Amy Rosenthal’s E​ncyclopedia of an Ordinary Life:

Appreciate  
­ I think appreciating is one of the most important thing for which human needs in their life. 
Lots of people in these days doesn’t know how to appreciate to stuffs that they have. For 
example when I heard some kids complaining about their allowance. When I heard that I was 
like “ My parents doesn’t even gave me.” I try to appreciate to everything, it doesn’t matter if 
it’s something really precious or normal so we doesn’t even realize it’s something we really 
need for our life. 

Block B 
­ I love celebrities. My dad always complains with it, but I can’t help with it. I don’t care if it’s 
actor, model, or singer. Reason why I like them is, they always try hard for their dreams, and 
they looks fancy and gorgeous. My mouth gets open widely when I saw them. Block B is my 
favorite one right now. 

Cook 
­ My mom and dad is really really good at cooking. My family love my moms food, but 
sometimes she create new foods. It’s good sometimes, but it’s really bad sometimes. I don’t 
want to hurt my mom’s feeling, so I usually say it’s good, but my brother always tell her how 
good it is and how bad it is. Sometimes he try not to say it’s bad, but he can’t hide his 
disappointment and futility in his face. It’s kind of funny to wait and see what he’s face is going 
to be. 

Dogs 
­ My family love animals. Especially dogs. We had 7 dogs at once before, and it was 
awesome. My dogs love to run and hide, so want time one of my dog was like 5 month years 
old, and she was gone for like 2 days. All of my family was anxious, in panic, and running 
around like a crazy people looking for her whole day long, and we found her ​under ​the deck. 

When we found her, we were are relieved that she was safe, but we got really mad that how 
much she made us worried. My mom is kind of scared to dogs, but my dad keep bring dogs to 
house. Me and my brother think it’s crazy but we love it when he brought new dogs without 
my mom’s permission. But, My mom is the one who usually takes care of the dogs, because 
my dad goes to work, Brother is at dorm, and I come home late.  

English 
­ English is my secondary language. It’s hard to learn a new language that I didn’t know. But 
learning several languages will be good for my future, so I’m try to learn other languages. 

Facebook 
­ I can’t live without a facebook. I’m on a facebook usually half of the day. I can contact with 
my friends, see variable pictures and videos. My friends always say that “ Shannon is on 
facebook 39/7 on day.” That doesn’t make any sense but I agree with them.  

Global 
­I always heard from adults “ You have to be global”, and I agree with them. Korea is a good 
country, but the world is big, and Korea is  small. It would be awesome to go to the other 
country and learn other cultures and languages.  

Home 
­ Home is my favorite place in my whole entire life. When I feel really tired or having a hard 
time, I just want to go home, take a shower, and take a rest. I feel peace, relax I always say “I 
wanna go home”, even though I’m at home right now. 

I 
­ I. Me. Myself. I always try to think who I am, but it is hard to find the clue to figure out who I 
am. I think there is no clue of who I am.  

Jeremy  
­Jeremy is my 3 years older brother. We fight every time when we see each other. At the 
airport the day that I was leaving to America, all of my family was crying but my brother was 
smiling really happily, and waving his hand and shouting “ Bye!!!!”   

Kis 
­This is my first year at ​KIS, Korean International School.​ They give to many works and I have 
stuffs that I still don’t understand. There are too many confusions and misunderstandings. 

 

LOL 
­ I always love to laugh. I laugh really big and loud. But the sad thing is that it’s hard to laugh 
now. To many works and to many things to think about. Getting older and growing up, my 
worries are growing either.  

Money 
­I’m sure that everyone does it, but I love money ( not like greedy). I usually save money for 
quite long, and use almost half of them at once. There is a tradition in Korea, that they put 
several stuff such as mike, money, pencil, stethoscope at their first birthday party, and let the 
baby pick one, and I pick the money. 

Notre dame de Paris 
­Notre dame de Paris is one of my favorite book and a musical. My dad loves movies, music, 
and musical, so he knows lots of good movies, music, and musicals. I saw the film of this 
musical when I was really young, and it was really impressed, even though the language was 
french so I can’t understand what they were saying, the acting and the songs were fabulous. 

October 
­October is one of my favorite month in a year. I like the weather during october. It’ not that 
hot, or not that cold. It’s little bit windy and the color of the scenery is so beautiful.  

Pink 
­Pink is my favorite color. I usually like all the colors especially pastel colors, but the pink is 
my favorite color.  

Question 
­Having questions are good. Too many questions may bother you or someone, but I think 
question is kind of showing attitude that you are paying attention or showing that you want to 
learn something.  

Respect 
­ My grandma always teach me to respect the adults and have manners. I know that everyone 
must have manners and respect others, but in Korea, being respectful to adults is really 
important. It was hard to respect and polite to adults, and can’t understand why do I have to 
do this when I was younger, but I realized that, that was the way to be loved from them. 

Si­yeon 
­ This is my real name, and My English name is Shannon. My family and friends also call me 
Sean sometimes. It’s usually for boys, but if you pronounce Si­yeon really fast, you can hear 
Si­yeon as a Sean. I feel special when they call me with Sean, so only my family and the best 
friends call me Sean. All of my names starts with S. 

Time 
­My dad always said “wasting time is the foolest thing ever”. I try to use my time wisely, but 
it’s hard to do. I’m just a 16 years old girl, and my dad expect me to read books or do 
something precious  instead of sleeping at weekend.  

Umbrella 
­Rihanna is one of my favorite singer. She has lots of good songs, and Umbrella was the first 
song that I listen to  her music. I still like RIhanna’s songs. 
 

Volcano 
­It’s hard for me to calm myself. But if I get organized, my passion explode like an eruption of 
a volcano.  

 

World 
­One of my dream is to travel all around the world. After I graduate the high school, and get 
the permission from the college, I’m going to defer the admission for a while . I’m going to do 
part­time job to earn money for the trip. I think the time that I travel will make me think about 
my future and make me firm. 

 

X 
­X can be an alphabet, but it can also be ​unknown quantity. My dad was a highschool teacher, and 

he is a SAT teacher now. He loves math the most, but I hate the math the most. I couldn’t understand 
why does he like it, so I asked him one time, and he said there is a successfulness and there are lots of 
ways to get the answer and all of the ways are fun. I made really dumb face like telling him WHAT THE 
HECK ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT! My brain gets mass up when I saw the numbers. Also I hate the 

expectations from the people because my dad is smart, so I’m would be really smart. 

Youtube 
­Youtube is a video sharing website. When I have time I like to watch movies, TV shows, and 
listen to musics, and youtube have most of the videos. I usually watch TV shows and listen to 
music with  youtube.  

Zoo 
­ I always wanted to have a zoo, since I was like 7. Having zoo is one of my dream for the 
future. Imagine that you are living in the zoo. When you wake up, there are giraffe eating a 
leaves o​n​ a tree right inside your backyard, tigers and lions chasing each other. Don’t you 
think it’s cool?
